I'm a Yankee transplant in VA. In Jersey, everyone named their boats (at least at the shore they did, I dunno about inland), but I don't see it as much in VA or WV.
Do you all name your boats? Anything really clever that you'd share?
When I finally get my boat, I'm gonna name it 'Scotty Best'. When I was a kid, my grandfather's boat, now dry rotted in storage, was named 'Scotty Good'. It was a play on a insulting Italian phrase my grandparents would use for my dad and uncle (their son-in-laws), in a fond way, not a mean way... My dad said the phrase sounded like Scotty Good to his ears, and when he suggested the name to my Grandfather, they thought it would be a hilarious name for the boat... So when I get mine, I'll keep a bit of tradition, and keep the Scotty part, but since it'll be a better rig, Best is better than Good...
I'm in TN and I have seen a lot of people name their boats especially yachts, house boats, and boats with cuddy cabins. I haven't seen that many people name your fishing boat or a run about boat.

Pretty much how it is in VA
:-X I've never seen a fresh water fishing boat with a name on it. That's mostly something you see on bigger boats.
What Tntitans and Slomoe said. Take a cruise down the Occoquan River (Nova) from the park on 123. Almost every boat at the Fairfax Yacht club and boat docks down by Belmont Bay have names on their boats. Some pretty creative ones at that too. Me and my dad named our first bass boat that we got this summer "Reely Hooked". Don't know if many of you name your bass boats but we thought it was appropriate and the name definately fit. My dad and mom thought it up and I loved it. We are still working on getting the graphics for the side of the boat but haven't picked out a font and size nor have the cash to do so at the time.
Wow. I thought everyone named their best lady! My old rig was a green 14' Starcraft with a 7.5 hp Johnson on the transom - the "Green Hornet". My new rig is obviously a Crestliner! But I haven't named her yet. She still has to tell me what she wants it to be
I have a superstitious thing about naming small fishing vessels. If you do .... never change the name! The topic came up on another board I am a member of not too long ago. A member renamed his boat, and 2 weeks later it disintegrated in front of his eyes. I personally had a buddy rename his fishing boat, and his boat was found adrift on the Ohio, but he wasn't for 6 months or so. Washed up among some debris on the Ohio River channel.
dont have a boat :'(
In the future when I'm living in Miami, my flats boat will be "I got a bone"
For bonefish, of course. Really mature huh? Yeah I came up with it when I was about 12.

Boats that have a rating of 5 net tons or greater require Documentation, and also require that the boats name and hailing port be displayed.
