Hobie Kayak Leash looks like the best option out there. At $20, it seems like a no brainer for our expensive bass rigs.
When people bring up not wanting to spend money on tethers saying "oh well i always have it in my hand or in reach" I just think why not spend the $20 bill and save several hundred, rather than kick yourself if you capsize or have a mishap. It must take a certain mindset to be that way ????♂️.
Even though I'm in a canoe with stabilizers to prevent capsizing - I invested in tethers for my rods, tackle bags and what-not. Better safe than sorry.
I hate leashes. But they have saved me a few thousand dollars. I only leash my rods when I am on the ocean and the rods are in a rod holder. And I made a dozen of them for about $20 using 550 cord.
I fish a lot on standing on my kayak so i Id rather get those float attachments.
It's not a question of if....but when...
A must have IMO.
I used to think it wouldn't happen to me, until it did. A $200 setup slipped right out of my hands. Luckily I was able to retrieve it but I ordered some leashes right after that trip.
Must have in my opinion. Even though the rigs I use in my yak are older model stuff, I still don't want to lose them in the bottom of the lake! I thought it would not be a problem, until I lost one. I usually bring 3 set ups with me, the 2 that I am not using are leashed. I don't leash the one I am using, should I?

Yes, I learned the hard way.

Been there, done that, donated a $350 outfit to Davey Jones chest. After that I acquired several Hobie rod leashes.
I agree, rod leashes are a must. But you don’t need to spend $20 on em, either ????

Definitely not. Got a set of 12 for $10 on Amazon. They seem to be enough to keep me from losing things haphazardly, though I might upgrade them over the course of time for more durable ones.

Even the Yak Gear ones are cheaper at 3 for $12. And I can’t imagine them breaking for any reason
Lost 1 rod ever , when fishing out of my bass hunter. It was a nice quantam casting outfit. Got back to the dock before I realized it was gone. At least I know what lake it's in .
I'll pass on the rod tethers myself. Maybe if i fished ocean or something i would use them but for me, i'll pass on having another thing to get in my way or get tangled in should i flip.
Yep,Plenty of options other than Hobie
How do the leashes with a D clamp and split ring work?
For me...
Rods: I'll be installing eye-screws into the butt end of the rods and other eye-screws to the panel the rod-holders will be mounted to. The split rings go on the panel screws, the D-Ring clips to the rod ends. When I pull a rod, unclip, then clip to another leash that's attached to my PFD.
Other gear: Eye-screws in various places with the D-Ring clipped to the tool/bag.
I rather tether them in when not In use and hold the one i am fishing. If I'm on the move or trawling then a leash would be warranted. How you fish has a big impact on what system is needed. Any rod not in use should be restrained some way.

I wondered that as well. I use the D clap and split rings on my pliers and scissors.
Don't like the idea of modifying my rods in any way.

The one I was holding was the one I lost
I just lost my first rod ever fishing down in Louisiana. Was one of my more expensive ones too.
Not putting screw eyes into my rods.
I'm definitely not attaching screw in eyelets either. I'm just using a small piece of copper pipe insulation on the rods that are idle in the kayak and taking it off the one I'm using; or if a spilt grip which I mostly use, just a small piece at the end split.
No tether for me on my rods or paddle. I think a global moderator on this site(can't remember who), warned about the possibility of getting tangled up in tethers in the event of a flip over.
If someone likes the idea of a tether; then the Hobie product or something similar should work for you, so go for it.
you could clip the ring to the reel.

That was my reaction when I read this thread the other day. Never lost a rod... even when I flipped once, in the Shenandoah.
Coincidentally, yesterday, I snagged one of my favored combos on the backswing with a crankbait. (New yak this year....I never had rod holders angled out before.)
Tossed the rod right in the drink....somehow, I was able to reach over and grab the tip as it was going down, in apparent slow motion.
I may have to rethink my position on leashes (that was very nearly a $350 mistake)....or maybe just avoid using the 'outrigger' holders....or most likely, be more careful.
Been looking at these since I just bought my fish fishing kayak.
Question for You guys that use rod tethers, when you are using the rod is it tethered? And where are you attaching the tether? To your PFD, or something else?
I really feel like the foam rod floats are too bulky and will either get in my way or interfere with casting. But I’m also worried that a tether on the rod will limit my options for casting as well.
Rods that are in the holders I can totally understand having a tether on as a precaution, and I plan to do that.
I don't tether when I'm using the rod. I suppose you could add a pad eye close to where you hold the rod. Seems like it could be a pain, and I don't like stuff that can tangle in front of me.
I don't/haven't tethered while using my rod either. However, I am thinking about a float for the rod I am using at the time. Do they really get in the way?
Maybe not, if tethered to your PFD or something.
Great! Thanks!
I definitly don’t want something cumbersome that would limit movement or get tangled in other gear or around me. Just interested to know if other people use them while using the rod or only when the rods are in holders. I been watching a lot of kayak videos trying to get ideas for rigging and pretty much nobody ever even mentions a rod leash. To me it just makes sense to have something to keep them attached to the boat in case it flips or one gets snagged somehow.
I’ve fished from canoes plenty, and from a few non-fishing style kayaks, and haven’t ever lost a rod but I’ve had enough close calls. I usually only take my cheaper combos if I’m fishing from a canoe, but with the kayak I’d like to be able to take my nicer shimano reels and not worry about dropping a $300-400 rod combo in the lake. Or worse, have the yak flip and lose three or four rods.
My scale floats, my lip grip floats, my net floats, my fish stik measuring board floats. Just need fishing reels that float and I’ll never have to worry about sinking!
All the rod floats that I’ve seen are HUGE. Like big enough for salt water rods. Big enough to get in the way of the line during casting. And even though they are light weight, I still think it would feel odd to have the big lump of foam stuck to say a medium rod while I’m trying to twitch a jerkbait or something. For a big heavy flippin rod that might make a bit more sense.
Maybe some are smaller and I just haven’t seen them? I plan to try experimenting with a few sections of small foam pipe insulation just to see how well it does. Maybe something that will keep a rod floating just long enough will be the ticket.
@clayton86 uses a device that inflates when submerged. I can't remember what it's name is, though.

I tether the rod I am using. I attach it to the bungee cord paddle holder that came with my kayak. the cord is not as big a nuisance as I thought it would be.

It happened to someone in my area. He flipped and got tangled in fishing line...
I'm the one that warned about possible tangles. Until I lost my favorite spinnerbait rod, I was against them. I don't recommend a paddle leash, and I really don't like the idea of tethering when fishing. I'm not too worried about leashes behind me in the crate. I lost my rod, bumping it while putting the paddle away.

why dont you recommend a paddle leash? I always use one. I'd much rather lose a rod than my paddle (unless you have a mirage drive)

For me the answer is my paddle floats, my rod does not.
If my paddle somehow gets out of my grasp I can get it with this

I do have a Compass Mirage, but I never used paddle leashes with the past four boats. It's an entanglement issue. My Paddle is full carbon fiber and floats.
I currently use a paddle leash, but I don’t like it because of the possible tangling issues.
Thinking of putting a pool noodle on it.
never checked to see if my carbon paddle floated or not. but I'd still be afraid of it floating away in wind or current. i do have one of those hand paddles but wouldn't rely on it. I've never had any tangling issues with the paddle leash attached to a ring on my PFD
Not as hard as you might think. You can use 1/2” d-ring and no it is not interfering while casting or fishing.
My paddle also floats. (Tested and verified)
And if I drop it, I have other things that I can sorta paddle with to go get it (like hands), or Keep a crankbait in the kayak and if your paddle floats away you can always use a crankbait to drag yourself back over to it. I’ve found that’s actually a very productive way to fish on the move and cover lots of water.

Why not screw a steel ring in a white python!!!! A nylon strap to the reel foot would be plenty. Even paracord would be fine.
Or I could just buy a product that works straight out of the package. I'm weird like that.

Rod float, try pipe insulated 1/2” size. It is smaller than the one sell in the market. You only need about 6” to float your setup.
I’m cheap and like to DIY with my stuffs.

The savur butt they have like a salt tab like inflatable vests when it melts or what ever it has a spring loaded Eva ring that pops out with 60 yards of braid tied to it. I personally don’t use them but install them on rods for customers. It’s not carbon fiber which has been my go to handle material
