I was idling over a brush covered ridge, and downscan revealed a large school of fish oriented to the bottom between two brushpiles. Turned around and caught fish literally every drop with a dropshot for an hour. Fish in the pic are 12 - 14 inch bass.
how did you know that wasn't shorter grass?
I am new to sonar and i am reading and learning. What i see there is, those "fish" are more dense then the other grass is that correct?
Nice shot!

There is no grass there. One brushpile is right under the "mi" abbreviation, the other at the right edge. Just a smooth bottom otherwise, with a ton of fish (all individual white dots).
That is awesome I need to get one of those. I was mad when I opened the bass pro cat. and saw that my humminbird now has SI and DI.
To further show just how great the LSS is, I should have made a pass with 2D sonar side by side. These fish were close enough to the bottom that only an experienced sonar user would have known all these fish were there. Target separation close to bottom or cover is where this technology really shines.
Todd...I agree with Marlboloman...I would look at that & wouldn't determine that those marks are fish. I've got a new Humminbird with si & di & I wish Humminbird would have seminars on how to properly read your units. I mean I've got this fantastic imaging...but if I'm not reading what it's showing me...might as well not have it...great image tho!
When I tried out my 798 CI SI for the first time the other day I was almost as excited about the down imaging as I was the side imaging.
Awesome screen shot
What we need (hint hint) is someone to do a thread like I did on fishing Toledo Bend but about reading depth finders, side imaging, & downscan.
Question out of curiosity, Rayburn?
sure doesnt look like fish..more like something growing off bottom
Now Wayne P. sent me an image that you could tell it was bass sitting there..it was pretty cool!

Todd, you forgot the cordinates.
GTrombly, what Humminbird SI unit you do have?
All SI units have or can have DI.
I have the 788ci which doesn't have SI or DI, this year they added it to it.

Yeah, if you notice the picture is cropped, windows to the right had the coordinates,
QuoteI have the 788ci which doesn't have SI or DI, this year they added it to it.
The bass pro catalog has a typo on this unit. There are 2 new 788 models for 2011. 788ci HD and 788ci DI HD. The first is the same as yours with the addition of the ethernet network port and the second adds Down Imaging. Neither can do Side Imaging.
Well either way I would like to have the DI. Going to have to talk my dad into buying one for our boat.
Nice!we just got a lowrance hds 5 with gp and its normal sonar is awesome but I can't wait till we get that SI and DI add on.My dads gonna get the add on when his bonus comes in in february ;D
Ive never used a fishfinder I have a ? to ask.
Where is your boat in relation to this picture? Is your boat say above the number "21.9" on the left or above the "pm" on right?
The screen scrolls from right to left, so the right side of the screen is most current info. However, with the cursor (you can see it on the pic), you can scroll back in time to look at recent history with the screen still. That is what I did to take this pic. Unit was an HDS-10, image from the LSS-1 StructureScan.
This post and thread are great. Just got a brand new lowrance mark 5x dsi which is a brand new only down scanning unit....no regular sonar.
It really made me nervous to buy a unit (my first one) that lacked a "traditional" sonar, but it seemed just so good for the price that I had to go for it. This picture is really making me far more confident that I made the right purchase, because that image is simply awesome. It is great also to see what a fish looks like on this type of scanning unit.
Will be testing in the next few weeks and will keep studying your picture to make sure I do not miss a school like this.
Great stuff.
BTW toward the "how could you tell it wasn't grass question". The biggest clue is the depth reading. Those fish were in about 20ft of water. At that depth usually only hydrila (in the feshwater US) can crow that deep, and that would have looked much different.
One of the advantages of DI or DS is looking down in vegetation. With regular sonar and even Sturucture Scan or Side Imaging, you are looking at the weed stems from the side and it just looks blurry. With the down looking imaging beams, you see the individual weed stems.
This is a weed bed point similar to hydrilla, it is egeria and extremely thick and sturdy like hydrilla is.

Question out of curiosity, Rayburn?
X2
If I were to buy the HB 788 that has no SI. Could I at a later date buy the SI as a add on to this unit or would I have to just buy a SI unit?
for hummingbird the si is internal so from my understanding, you could not add it at a later date. Lowrance the structure scan is external which means you can add it to units that are capable of receiving it.
Carrington is correct. Only a Humminbird SI unit can be SI/DI

Or, my I add, someone to do a Catt-style thread "seminar" on fishing Kentucky lake in, say, April, like the 17th to the 22nd...pickin' up what I'm puttin' down?
Great pic by the way. can't wait till soft water returns.
