Answer: It's a fish hook sharpener. Sure in a pinch you could use it on a knife but I'd buy a wet stone for that.

UPDATE: I received an email from Rick thanking me for bringing up the defective product. He asked if a refund was alright with me. He didn't ask anything about changing this review so I greatly applaud them for that. It really shows he's worried about the customers experience. This file is actually of exceptional quality and I recommend it! It only had a blemish on one side which like I said was corrected with a refund - the other side works great though. I've already sharpened 3 hooks with it and I mean BIG swimbaits hooks. One hook was a 10/0 Owner Beast hook and the other 2 were 1/0 Owner ST-36. I just saved money on hooks! This is the least expensive file in Amazon and it's great! Oh, I can't forget Rick with the customer support! Thanks Rick!

This file is good quality but came with a decent size imperfection almost directly in the middle of one side. That's not a gouge - it's actually excess stone or metal sticking up higher than the rest. It may seem like I'm blowing this out of proportion but let me tell you why this is an issue. This imperfection will be in the way when sharpening - meaning I will never be able to sharpen a blade with it as it will chip and dull the blade. I should be able to use it for fish hooks but this excess material will be annoying for that too.

I would just return it and not worry about it but I don't enjoy having waste gas and time to go out my way to return a product that is messed up from the factory and somehow skipped quality control. The gas to return this product will cost as much as it did to buy it. At this time I suggest spending the extra $2 or $3 on a product that isnt defective.

If the seller would like to reach out and make this correct that's fine with me. You sent a paper with the file saying to leave a review so... I'm your second review and it's not looking good right now. Will update review if anything changes.

The saying "you get what you paid for" applies very well to this sharpener. The needle sharpening groove is not angled well so your hook point doesn't really grind that well through it. I found that the flat surface on the side is better for a more precise and even grind. Another issue is that both sides are of different grit, but there are no markings to distinguish them. You'll have to run your finger across it a few times to feel it out. If you have thick calloused fisherman hands like me it becomes VERY difficult to feel the difference between such fine grit. I had to have someone else feel and confirm for me and mark the sides with permanent marker. Lastly, my sharpener had a huge burr at the end of the needle groove. So if I use it and hit that burr there goes my point, and I'd have to resharpen. Quality control is lacking but kind of expected. At this price point its a bit hard to argue.
