Answer: I would say NO! Wood pellets have a size and dimension that are calculated at an assigned burn ratio to asure a proper temperature and cooking times. Charcoal is burnt wood and has a different burn ratio and would give improper cooking time and jam up the fuel delivery system. The Charcoal would work on other open fire grill, however if you would like to test your theory please do and post the results.

Answer: Some newer grills no longer have a p-setting but if you are looking for more of a smoke flavour, we suggest smoking the meats between 160F-225F for longer cooks at lower temps will produce more smoke flavour and the smoked ring on the meat.

If you are planning a cook in temperatures above freezing, or a cook that requires the grill be set higher than 350 degrees, remove the insulation blanket, as this could cause damage to the grill and the blanket, and in some cases, fire. Answer: Not having to deal with Montana winters as I live in south Texas, I cannot answer your question, but you have no liquid in or on the grill to freeze. I do have mine covered with a grill cover that is not insulated and I have had no issues.

Answer: This model does come with a pan under the grill that catches the grease from the grill. You must remove and clean the pan after heavy grease or food particles that falk through the grill racks. Answer: My grill came with a grease bucket, for which I purchased a disposable liner which can be recycled. There is a tray inside the grill that funnels the grease to the bucket. I do cover the tray with heavy duty aluminum foil. Clean up is much easier by doing this.

Return meat to grill, close lid, about 15 minutes per side (until thermometer indicates your desired final (rare, medium rare, well done) temperature. Remove from grill & let rest 10>15 minutes. Slice & serve!
Answer: The temp adjust to a high setting above 375 degrees. You can grill steaks but not sear because there is no direct flame that hits the meat. Every smoker recipe you can find will instruct you to sear the meat first on a stove then proceed to the smoker. Overall I would highly recommend this grill, it can cook anything from bbq to cookies or a cake. You will not regret this purchase...

I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Traeger. So disappointed to discover a huge dent in the corner of the pellet box, but we put it together anyway because the thought of packaging this behemoth back up to ship was more of a pain than just accepting the blemish. The first cook was a grilled chicken breast with pineapple. It was good but no carmelization of the food occurred so the appearance was unappealing. The second cook was smoked chicken. It was beautiful and juicy and completely delicious! The third cook was steak. I was completely disappointed in the result. No carmelization whatsoever it might as well have been boiled. Third cook was grilled meatloaf. I expected to just set the Traeger to cook and check the meat when the time was up. The pellets tunneled and stopped feeding in to the fire pot so the temperature dropped and I had to just finish cooking in the oven as it was taking too long to get the grill to restart. The smoky flavor of the meatloaf was excellent though. It never occurred to me that I would not be able to get a good sear on the meat when grilling with the Traeger so I’m a bit disappointed in that aspect, but the use as a smoker is is good.

I love my traeger. It is so easy to use and the temperature control is amazing. I am a new smoker and have smoked a pork shoulder and a brisket and both turned out as good or better than anything I’ve had in a restaurant. I was impressed. I’ve made pizzas, burgers, brats, steaks, chicken, and veggies. All turned out perfectly. I do wish they had a seat plate to sear in steaks but I can still make amazing steaks on it. People who have come over for bbqs watch me use it and taste the food and say they are going to get one for themselves.

I've had this grill for about 9 months now. I like this type of grill. It cooks well. The probes are very convenient and pellets are easier to use than gas. Smokes very nicely. I'm just very disappointed with the quality of metal that Traeger is using. The drip plate and firebox cover were both showing signs of rust before the grill was even assembled. So far, I've gone thru about 160lbs of pellets. There is a significant amount of rust now. You can definitely see that these two parts, in particular, will rust out within a few years and require a replacement just from humidity alone. The firebox will probably not be too far behind that. Another issue is that a large area of the exterior hood paint is disintegrating from the heat. I'm concerned that this too will start to rust now that it's exposed to open air. The unit is covered and not exposed to the elements (i.e. sun and rain...just open-air). I have a 10-year-old Weber grill and its hood is baked enamel. That hood looks much better than the Traeger's even after all this time. Even though this is relatively an entry-level Traeger grill, it wasn't cheap and I was expecting a higher quality product, comparable to my Weber. It's not even close. I cannot recommend this model with a good conscience.
DrCrohn : Poor customer service
Completed the start up procedure per the instruction manual and when I added Traeger pellets to complete the next step the auger would not turn. I had to disassemble the hopper unit and found that the auger motor was missing the nut and bolt that holds the auger to the motor. This ruined the party that I had planned to break in the Traeger. Emailed customer service at Traeger and they replied that they would send me the part out ASAP. Three days later I get an email from Traeger stating that the part has shipped and per the delivery information I will have it in a week.
I think that this is very poor customer service. I paid a lot of money expecting that I would get a superior product and because of poor assembly process I have to go without my new Traeger for a week and a half.

Great Treager at a great price. All good except it was missing the bolts that attach the lifting handle to the lid. Went to Lowe’s and got the bolts for .38. It arrived 5 days earlier than expected which was a minor issue as I hadn’t moved into my place yet and the UPS driver declined to drop the package off at my door and cancelled my order so I had to call UPS and have it held at a customer center before it went back to Amazon. The box itself looked like it had been dropped out of a C130 at 10,000ft but the internal packaging held everything together and protected the contents from what looked like a really rough landing.

bought this for my brother's birthday-came with a dent. we tried to return and getting through to anybody at Traeger was a nightmare-we were hung up on various times. Then, we gave up and went ahead and used it with dent. Used it 6 times maybe and then it kind of had a acrid smell and stopped working. We had to finish dinner in the stove that evening. DON'T BUY because you could have real problems and no one will help you and you have a peice of junk to get rid of...

The packaging is horrific for this unit. Practically no protection and open for easy damage. Was shipped and delivered on it's side. Not sure whose fault it is. UPS? Amazon? Traeger? All 3 is my guess. Luckily the hopper and auger were not damaged and I can use the smoker. Sure didn't want to wait who knows how long to get a replacement. Do yourself a favor and buy one from a store that can assemble and deliver. It'll be worth the extra money.
The smoker itself is outstanding. I've made it all, ribs, pork butt, bellies, brisket, whole chickens, chicken legs, even enchiladas. Everything cooked perfectly. The unit does have a tendency to not hold a temp setting. I simply turn the dial to a new temp and then back to desired temp and that corrects it.
Overall, I can recommend this smoker, but not buying from a place that you can't control the shipping and handling. Get from a local store that can put it together and deliver.

I've had this grill for about 9 months now. I like this type of grill. It cooks well. The probes are very convenient and pellets are easier to use than gas. Smokes very nicely. I'm just very disappointed with the quality of metal that Traeger is using. The drip plate and firebox cover were both showing signs of rust before the grill was even assembled. So far, I've gone thru about 160lbs of pellets. There is a significant amount of rust now. You can definitely see that these two parts, in particular, will rust out within a few years and require a replacement just from humidity alone. The firebox will probably not be too far behind that. Another issue is that a large area of the exterior hood paint is disintegrating from the heat. I'm concerned that this too will start to rust now that it's exposed to open air. The unit is covered and not exposed to the elements (i.e. sun and rain...just open-air). I have a 10-year-old Weber grill and its hood is baked enamel. That hood looks much better than the Traeger's even after all this time. Even though this is relatively an entry-level Traeger grill, it wasn't cheap and I was expecting a higher quality product, comparable to my Weber. It's not even close. I cannot recommend this model with a good conscience.

Horrible it lasted 5 weeks. I had problems with the temp control and I called costumer service and was sent a new control assembly. Changed it out and still having the same problem. Now I’m past my return window. Waste of A LOT of money!

Third time used the auger wouldn't turn the pin put in it was to short and fell out 2 hours later started it again with a make shift pin because I had to find something in the tool box to get me by till I could get to the hardware store. I Bought name brand and paid more for this.

I've owned several different smokers and grills over the years. I have full size stick burners, WSM and Bradley Smart Smoker. This is by far my favorite. I've had this for about a week now. I've cooked almost every meal my family has eaten with it. It holds temp very well and reads temperature accurately. I've slow smoked salmon and grilled perfect medium rare Ribeyes. I've cooked brussel sprouts in it. With a range from about 180 to 425°, there isn't much you can't cook with it. Clean up is a joke. After about 10 cooks, I took a hand held vac and cleaned out enough powdery ash to fill the dust collector on the vacuum. That's it. No half burned pellets, no charred remains of wood chunks. I absolutely love this grill.

The next one arrived in perfect condition, but really they should be shipped in better packed boxes because there isn't much in there to protect them. Assembly is the worst part but its definitely not hard. If you need a smoker this is a great option!

I was anxiously awaiting the arrival of the Traeger. So disappointed to discover a huge dent in the corner of the pellet box, but we put it together anyway because the thought of packaging this behemoth back up to ship was more of a pain than just accepting the blemish. The first cook was a grilled chicken breast with pineapple. It was good but no carmelization of the food occurred so the appearance was unappealing. The second cook was smoked chicken. It was beautiful and juicy and completely delicious! The third cook was steak. I was completely disappointed in the result. No carmelization whatsoever it might as well have been boiled. Third cook was grilled meatloaf. I expected to just set the Traeger to cook and check the meat when the time was up. The pellets tunneled and stopped feeding in to the fire pot so the temperature dropped and I had to just finish cooking in the oven as it was taking too long to get the grill to restart. The smoky flavor of the meatloaf was excellent though. It never occurred to me that I would not be able to get a good sear on the meat when grilling with the Traeger so I’m a bit disappointed in that aspect, but the use as a smoker is is good.

Well packaged, assembled quickly. I plugged it in, went through the start up procedure, smoked/grilled a few different cuts of meat, let it go through its cool down process when I was finished and everything worked fantastic. The temp probes are accurate, it’s easy to clean and the food tastes fantastic. Best grilling/smoking investment I’ve ever made!

I have had this item for 6 months and it is still not operational. The manufacturer is responsive, however, the grill is still not operational. The grill was very easy to initially assemble and appears to be made of quality materials. To date this grill is USELESS and was a huge investment with no return.

I love this grill, the cooking surface is easy to clean and use. Easy to start up and set very accurate digital temperature readings. Comes with two remote digital temperature probes that also very accurate. Easy to start and develops deep smoke rings in beef and pork shoulders. I have not used for ribs yet, however sure it will do well. No constant having to keep an eye on temperature by adjusting air or hazardous propane or wood. This grill is easy to clean up after use and easy to shut down. By turning the temperature control switch to shutdown mode and it allows the pellet feeder to stop and burns all the remaining pellets in the burning pot to an ash and shuts off. After 10 minutes move the off switch to off and unplug for safety. I will take this grill with me while traveling.

This was a replacement for an older Traeger Jr. which has now been relegated to the campsite. Where have I been. This is still a small smoker but perfect for two or even up to a family of four the key is that it has all the spiffy stuff, the burner has been moved to the center "woohoo" the new latest control is awesome. More accurate, built in temp probes and the cooldown helps with reducing ash buildup which means less cleaning. Also hopper size has been increased for the smaller smokers, more burn time per filling and added feature is a trap door on the hopper that makes pellet changing as hard as making sure you have a spare bucket for it to drop into. Thumbs up, Traeger strikes again.

Never used a Traeger before. I am hooked! Temperature control is perfect. Meat comes out perfect. Getting pellets for it is easy (any hardware or BBQ store I've gone to has pellets). Understand that this isn't a traditional grill. Leaving it open for burgers and anything else for a high temperature isn't very effective. This works best when smoking meat is the goal.

I have wanted a Traeger for quite some time and finally made the purchase decision. We've smoked a rack of beef ribs, a partially cooked ham and a pork shoulder butt roast, all with very tasty results. The Traeger smoker/grill works to perfection and provides mouth watering results. Using the provided temperature probes and automatic temperature control, the Traeger does all of the work with no hassles. One need not constantly check the smoker for fuel and/or air mixture as this is all taken care of. The Traeger is the easy man's smoker/grill and well worth the purchase.

First time I used the smoker the temperature would not stay where I set it. I set it to smoke with the lid open and the temperature increased to 250 and was still climbing when I shut it down after 15 minutes. When I called Traeger the “customer service” representative tried to make it my fault. Saying I did something wrong. The second time I called I was told if the service tech wouldn’t come to my house I would have to rent a truck to bring the smoker in to the service center. Not really what I would expect from a company that touts the best warranty and product in the industry There is a lot of other smokers out there. I would seriously consider a different brand and you will save yourself some money too.

What's not to like about the Traeger? The only disappointment is that they used to include a cookbook, and now you have to buy it extra. It is very easy to use.

Completed the start up procedure per the instruction manual and when I added Traeger pellets to complete the next step the auger would not turn. I had to disassemble the hopper unit and found that the auger motor was missing the nut and bolt that holds the auger to the motor. This ruined the party that I had planned to break in the Traeger. Emailed customer service at Traeger and they replied that they would send me the part out ASAP. Three days later I get an email from Traeger stating that the part has shipped and per the delivery information I will have it in a week.
I think that this is very poor customer service. I paid a lot of money expecting that I would get a superior product and because of poor assembly process I have to go without my new Traeger for a week and a half.

I'll start by saying I'm a fan of Traeger and their products, my first Traeger is still in great condition after 7 years, and will be going to a friend so they can enjoy the awesomeness that is Traegering. I was happy to come across the Pro 22 for a good price and made the decision to upgrade.
Assembly - easy, two people almost necessary, but if you've got decent upper-body strength you can flip the grill upside down to install the legs and the leg braces. The packing material provided braces the round grill while it is flipped over, which is a wonderful design.
Use - if you've never experienced a grilling/smoking with a Traeger, I highly recommend it...there are many like it, but they simply do not compare.
Shipping/Packing - as I mentioned, the packing material is useful for the install, but it does not serve to protect the grill during shipping. I received the grill and immediately unboxed to begin assembly. There was a large dent on the back of the grill which I can only assume came from shipping. The box did have a portion that was ripped but I didn't think it would have made such a major dent. This dent is about 7" long and is quite unsightly.
I won't be submitting a return for a new grill, but would definitely like to caution others that are more particular with how their grill will arrive. Thankfully the dent appears to be simply cosmetic. I'd like to know what the seller does in these situations, is there a replacement part that can be sent? I'm happy to install myself, but would certainly like to have a new grill that doesn't look like it was purchased from a scratch-and-dent warehouse.
Amazon Customer : DO NOT BUY!
This is my second Trager grill from Amazon. First one worked for two weeks and then would not work anymore. This one I put together, would not fire up from the get-go. They seem to have very poor quality control. Also Amazon customer service is hard to deal with on returns. This item comes in a box that as soon as you open it cannot be used to resend it back because of the way it’s packaged. So they want me to ship back but I I don’t have a box large enough to use the ship back to them. Trying to figure that out it’s been a headache so be aware of these issues if you were to purchase this item.

I was a little hesitant on this purchase, as my immediate family hasn't usually been big fans of ribs and pulled pork. A few weeks in though, ribs, chicken wings and chicken drumsticks have all been well received. I'm a new fan of smoked meats!
My one gripe would be with just quickly grilling burgers and steaks. At higher temperatures, it burns through wood pellets pretty fast and takes some time to warm up. At "High" temperature setting, it maxes out around 415 degrees for me. It's very indirect heating, so that makes sense. I decided to keep my propane grlll for steaks and burgers, but the Traeger is great for smoking, so we have been using it a couple of times per week.

Out of the box, I couldn't be happier with this earlier model Traeger Pro 22. The brand lived up to the hype on my first smoke! Ease of use, from temperature control to the Traeger app, not to mention a wealth of official Traeger video content helps you to hit the ground running. Assembly was rather simple, although I would stress that one take their word for it when they say it's a two-person job. Do beware, drip tray protectors, drip bucket liners, pellets, grill foil for wrapping, a spray bottle for spritzing and frankly some prep space (specifically, the attachable fold-out tray at the very least): all items you are going to want to have on hand if you intend to fire this pellet grill up and enjoy your cooking experience the day it arrives. Regarding size, the Pro 22 is fine for me. It's just my wife and I, and I am certain I could host a modest gathering, but I'd wager if I hosted more than maybe six people more than once or twice a year, I'd likely find myself wishing I'd gone up a size. That's just my opinion though.
Noteworthy is Traeger's customer support. The live chat is responsive and accommodating. Also, mind that the listed max temp for this grill is 450 F. I bought the Traeger cast iron grill grate should I want to attempt a sear, but make sure you understand the differences between the various sorts of outdoor cookers, and make sure you're using the right tool for the job!
Amazon Customer : Easy to use, but does not produce strong smoke flavor.
I like this grill a lot. It was easy to assemble, it maintains temperature perfectly and is very easy to clean, especially if you have a shop vac, which I do. The only con I have with this grill is that it doesn’t produce a very strong smoke flavor. I heard so many great things about Traeger grills, and as far as grilling goes it is excellent, but when it comes to imparting smoke flavor, not so much. The traeger pellets didn’t produce a very good smoke flavor at all. I started using a blend I got from Walmart which seems to work better, but still does not standup to using an offset wood smoker. If you really want a good wood flavor you need to leave it in the smoke setting for the majority of the cook plus adding another element to produce more smoke. I have a steel box, add wood chips and place it on the grease slide. When leaving it in smoke mode it holds temp around 180 degrees so it will extend cook times dramatically, but if you want smoke flavor it’s worth it.
