Questions about KampFit Pellet Smoker Tube 6 Inch - Stainless Steel Perforated Wood Pellet Tube Smoker - 2 Hours of Additional Billowing Cold Smoke for All Electric, Gas, Charcoal Grills or Smokers
Q:
I ordered this as part of a complete gift package of a smaller charcoal grill for camping. Please share how you all start your pellets or chips in it?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Happy to. There are a number of videos about cold smoking available. You need to get the pellets burning for 5-10 minutes before blowing them out and and letting them smoke. I use a plumbers propane torch. Fill the tube, lay it down wherever you are smoking, and turn the torch onto the opening for about a minute. Gets the pellets burning. Blow it out 5-10 minutes later and it will slowly smolder away. Try cold smoking horseradish cheese, fantastic. Good Luck
Answer: It's easy. Fill the tube with wood pellets of your choice. There are various wood pellet brands and types of wood. A little goes a long way. A fully loaded 12" tube will last about 4 hours. So, only load enough to last as long as you will be grilling. Example: Only grilling for 2 hours? Then load about half way. Got it? There are various ways to light the wood pellets. I use a propane torch. Do yourself a favor and go to YouTube.com. Copy "https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=uATkwVzihWs" without the quotation marks and paste in search area of YouTube). Enjoy the smoke.
Answer: I use a small torch to light the top pellets for about 4-5 minutes. Then I let it burn for about 10 minutes before using it.
Answer: With a propane torch. Load the pellets into the tube and place on grill grate. Hold the lit torch a couple of inches from the pellets until a flame is produced and hold there for a few seconds.
Answer: I use a propane torch to start the pellets
Answer: You'll need a propane torch and pellet grill type pellets to get the pellets good and hot to get them smoking takes 5-7 minutes. This is the best smoker tube ever, even better to cold smoke cheese
Answer: I use a propane torch to get the pellets going, they are hard to light, an air pump to help it going
Answer: You take take a coal and drop it in the bottom or set it on the coals for a bit, I like to use a small propane torch to light it
Answer: Light one end with a butane torch.
Q:
Anyone tried to use charcoal in it on a gas grill to add charcoal flavor?
Answer: Charcoal is once cooked wood, hence smoke flavor. Use the pellets and get a little more smoke flavor.
Answer: I haven't tried charcoal, I am going to try Pit Boss charcoal pellets
Answer: No sure you would want a charcoal flavor but works great with any flavor of pellet
Answer: I've only used pellets in mine. If you broke the charcoal up it could possibly work.
Answer: why would you even want to, you can get pellets in different woods.
Q:
Do you need to soak the pellets in water prior to using in a gas grill?
Answer: Definitely 'No!' If you soak the pellets, they will swell up, turn to oatmeal and you won't get them to burn.
Answer: No…the pellets are not meant to be soaked. Start them dry in the pellet smoker. I use the pellet tube to cold smoke cheese so the grill is just to house the cheese and pellet smoker…not to cook with in my case. If you soak these…they are a soggy mess.
Answer: I don't have a gas grill, but I don't think there would be any problem using the product with one. I have a pellet grill and used a kitchen torch to ignite the pellets within the tube to ensure they properly burned, and there was no damage to the tube.
Answer: You do not need to soak pellets. Fill tube within 1" of the end. Stand on end and ignite the open tube end (easy using a small propane torch). Let it burn for 10 minutes, keep an aggressive lighting sequence going if it doesn't stay lit. Then blow it out. Lay it on its side on the cooking grate and commence to grilling.
Answer: No, you don't soak them. You fill the tube with pellets and use a blow torch to lite the pellets at the open end. When you blow out the flame or it goes out by itself, the pellets need to stay burning like incense. Then you place it in the grill away from the flames and let it burn and produce smoke.
Answer: No soaking. I can’t think of a situation where you would soak pellets. They are not like wood chips or chunks.
Answer: Glenn if pellets get wet they simply turn to dust. Pellets must be kept dry. Fill tube and light open end, let flame burn for1-2 minutes then blow out and Enjoy the Smoke!
Answer: DO NOT soak pellets water is their enemy! They will fall apart into saw dust.
Answer: I don’t soak them
Q:
Do you have to use pellets, or can wood chips be used?
Answer: I use either/or both. Hickory chips tend to burn a little faster than the compressed pellets. Sometimes I combine them for a long lasting heavy smoke.
Answer: This tube is designed for using pellets. That this tube is small, you would have to replace the chips more frequently plus some wood chips may not fit inside the tube or enough to be effective.
Answer: Hey ron I really don't know, but I am goin try, I always used pellets, until you asked the ?? Thanx buddy I never thought to try .....
Answer: I have used both, they work equally well. I use a propane lighter to get them started.
Q:
can the end cap be removed?
Answer: I have a Lizzq 5”and 12”, they work fantastic. There is no need that I can think of you would have to remove the end cap. When it cools , remove it from the grill surface ant tap on it, it will clean the residue easily. They are great for cold smoking cheeses or whatever you want to cold smoke. Enjoy it
Answer: I don’t think you can remove it. I have never tried too but it would ruin the smoker tube if you did.
Answer: One end is open with no end cap at all. The other end is unable to be opened.
Answer: The end cap is not removeable but you could cut it off
Answer: No the end cap cannot be removed.
Answer: One end is open and the other has holes but is sealed on. So, no, the end cap is not removable . . . at least on mine. Having two closed (so to speak) ends would make it too difficult and messy to use.
Answer: No , really no need you load pellets and dump the ash from the open end
Answer: One end is open, the other end has a cap that does not come off. I suppose if a person wanted it off, it could be forced off, but I don't know why one would.
Answer: Can I use wood chips in this tube if so, how long would it last full of chips.
Answer: No
Q:
Can you use this pellet smoker tube to hot smoke?
Answer: I have this tube and a 12” tube as well. I have used it in my Traeger while cooking Briskets and pork shoulders @225° to 275° to add additional smoke flavor and have also used it without additional heat to cold smoke cheese.
Answer: That's what I use mine for, but I use it in conjunction with my Traeger pellet grill for extra smoke. It will not generate enough heat by itself to hot smoke.
Answer: Yes you can hot smoke with this small smoke tube.
Answer: Yes, the tube is excellent for both hot smoking and cold smoking. When hot smoking, I generally set the pallets in the tube on fire first, and then lay the tube on top of the grate while cooking/smoking my meat.
Answer: You bet! It can be used for both hot and cold smoking of food. Simple, but excellent way to smoke your fix'ns. Plus, it allows you to try a variety of many different types of wood pellets. It can be used in any type of grilling, even smokers. All it needs is enough ventilation so there is adequate airflow for the ember to smolder. Otherwise, the embers will die out.
Answer: You use it o hot smoke orsaycld smoke
Answer: It burns about 45 minutes with pellets. I use it while grilling to add extra smoke. The big one burns about 3 hours
Answer: I used it to supplement my pellet grill when I was smoking meats at around 250 degrees. Worked fine.
Answer: Yes. I use them in my smoker all the time. Make sure its lit before you close the lid. I usually let mine burn (tall flame) for 5-10 minutes then blow out the flame and away we go.
Answer: You can put the pellets in this to get a smoke. As for creating a lot of heat that isn't going to happen.
Q:
How many pounds or ounces of pellets does it take to fill the smoke tube?
Answer: I would guess the 6” smoker tube probably holds 3 cups at most . Once you use one of these next you’ll purchase a 12” one as well. The 6”tube will smoke for about 2 hrs and the 12” tube will last from 4-5 hrs. Enjoy
Answer: My 6" tube is buried in the travel trailer so I used my 12" tube,it held 12 oz or 2 cups so the 6" would hold 6 oz or 1 cup of pellets.
Answer: About 2 cups of pellets it lasts about 3 hours.
Answer: I have not weighed it, but a handful or two fills it up. so around 8 ounces or less.
Answer: Less than a pound; more than an ounce. My guess is about 5 ounces.
Answer: A couple of handfuls
Answer: I would say a cup and a half maybe.
Q:
I ordered 2 months ago. still haven't recieved it. tried to cancel 4 times. always say its on its way then will extend the date. why?
Answer: Mine only took 2 days
Q:
Would this work in a solar oven, particularly Rand solar tube? I want to smoke salmon while cooking solar style.
Answer: If the oven can take the heat of the pellets burning
Product reviews of KampFit Pellet Smoker Tube 6 Inch - Stainless Steel Perforated Wood Pellet Tube Smoker - 2 Hours of Additional Billowing Cold Smoke for All Electric, Gas, Charcoal Grills or Smokers
Don Sumrall : I LIKE
PRETTY GOOD FOR A LITTLE EXTRA SMOKE ON MY PELLET GRILL. I MIX PELLETS AND SMALL WOOD CHIPS TOGEATHER AND IT DOES GOOD.
James A Kennedy : Takes practice
The pellets burn too fast. Seen where someone put it on foil too slow the burn. Now it works great. Wish I would have bought the longer one.
J. Carr : Good smoker for a few hours of cooking
Smokes for 2-3 hours as expected. Great for lunchtime.
Robert : Great tube smoker!
Using this pellet tube smoker to smoke salt. It produces quite a bit of smoke.
James Shurigar : solid construction and worked great
Used it on my grill to smoke cheese! It turned out great. Solid little unit.
Guy DiMatteo : Nice simple device
Works as advertised. You do need to get it going with a torch of some type and let it burn for a good ten minutes.
Renaissance Man : Great size for my cold smoker
This is a very nice product. It is well-built. I bought this to use in my cold smoker, since it was smaller than the 12 inch model. It creates great smoke using wood pellets
WeeRider : Works great!
I like this for shorter smoke times. Start it with a heat gun.
me : nice size for short smokes..
nice size, good quality material..use when I cold smoke cheeses.
Jason Ferguson : Awesome
Works very well. Pretty durable. My local hardware store was out of lp so I am currently using map gas with no issues. Gets red but doesn't melt. Well worth the investment and really helps my pellet smoker get some more smoke flavor.
Amazon Customer : Good product
Easy to use.
Glenda : Great Product
This was a Christmas gift and was told it was very easy to use and did a great job!
imarkay : Looks Good
I haven't used it yet but the build quality is real good.
Amazon Customer : Awesome
Works as advertised. Use this on my pellet grill when my cook time in under 2 hours. Works well!
Bon Jovi : To much hype
These are a little disappointing. I've smoked for years now using wood chips but lately I've felt it's time to move onto pellets. So after lots of research, I tried these tubes cause pellet grills can get expensive. How I've made it 40 years and still haven't learned this, but if it sounds to good to be true, it is. Don't get me wrong, these work, kind of. I bought 2, one big and one small for my 2 grills. I've smoked chicken, chicken wings, burgers, cheese, and tritip so far (all different times).
Here's my problem, sometimes I blow out the flame and it smokes great. My grills however, don't have a vent on them so I had to prop them open so I could get air circulation or the pellets just burn out and I had to re light (basic chemistry).
Next problem is, I'd blow out the flame and after a while some of the pellets would reignite and I'd come back to the smoker an hour later and the temp would be 500+ degrees and my meat would be burnt (happened twice but not every time).
Another problem is you can't time your smoke and how many pellets you'll need. So for instance, with my burgers I want a 1 hour smoke, not long. One time I filled up my tube 1/2 way. I got lots of smoke the few times I checked it but at the end I came back and the pellets had all burned out. The next time I filled it up and when it was done, I still had smoke and pellets left. If you try and extinguish them you are only going to make a huge ash mess. If you just let them burn out you are wasting pellets and the rest of the money you were trying to save by buying these things. (I know it's not a lot of money but over time it adds up plus if the meat burns or is not cooked to perfection everytime, I consider that a loss even though I still eat it).
So this weekend the local hardware store had a camp chef on sale for a damn good price $299 so I said "f" it and bought one. Much easier and the food turns out almost the exact same everytime. Set the grill, do whatever the hell you want and come back to perfect food everytime. Not just with this tube but also with some of my past smokers, I have ruined to much meat so I figured I'm just gonna do it right and be the king of the block! Why I didn't do this sooner is beyond me...
Reel-Lentless : Get the Large One
Skip the little one and get the larger....dont have to fill the larger one all the way. This one runs out when not expected.
Tamara : Better than wood chips and the various containers we’ve used!
This is so much better than using wood chips. The pellets cost less in the long run because the pellets smoke for a much longer time! We’ve been using it with a gas grill for almost two years and absolutely love it!
Katbird : Great! Just don’t fill.
Very good. Works well. Not as good as an oval.
Works great but don’t load it full. If lit full and allowed to burn 10 minutes, when turned over, pellets fall out. Load an inch or so less than full. Then it works perfectly.
William H Anderson : Great way to introduce smoke flavor
Great little tube for adding 1 -1.5 hour smoke to meats. I've used it in my pellet grill for additional smoke @ higher temps as well as my propane grill
cust : Smokes fine.
Works great!
Joe Red : Very nice product
I like this tube for my electric grill. Rules don't allow any other types. At least I can infuse a little hickory into my meats
Llamazon : Kick up the Flavor
We started using these tubes last year, and wow! What a delicious difference they make! If you like that good old smoky barbecue taste, these are just the ticket. We plop them on a hunk of foil on our grill, and as the food cooks, they work their mouthwatering magic. It's like cooking with charcoal without the mess.
Terrence Lien : Works great
I have used similar 12 inch tubes to add smoke for longer cooks in my pellet smoker. I bought this to use in my gas grill for things like when I grill steaks, chops, burgers etc.
daviddsx : Don’t bother
Don’t bother, no flavor big mess
Alex Arriola : Set it and forget it
This little guy works great. Fill it up with your favorite pellets and fire it up with a torch. Make sure they catch on and you'll get 3 hrs. Of consistent smoke.
me : nice size for short smokes..
nice size, good quality material..use when I cold smoke cheeses.
Shannon : Better than sliced bread
it works with pellet AND chips. the pellets smoke longer, but the chips last at least an hour and typically raw meat absorbs the smoke flavor better than cooked meat, so as long as you start the smoke at the beginning you'll have smoked meat. Really nifty product. Easy (and cheap) way to add smoke to your gas grill.

JEFF BAKER : nice addtion to the smoker
Worked as expected
Moffetman : Very easy to use.
I used this product to smoke some brats. Filling it was simple. Lighting it was simple, also, but you need to have a torch type lighter. It was a true two hour smoke. When finished, either let it cool before handling it or use something to protect your hand. It will be hot. I liked it well enough to order one for my brother.
Knifeman : Ease of use
The smoking was so easy to use. I recommend it.
The Fischers : Consistent smoke for 2 hours
Product was well made, easy to fill with pellets and light. Lit it with a torch while it was standing up and let the flames burn for 3 or 4 minutes. Blew out the flame, laid it on its side away from the burners and it was smoking like it should. Added great smoke flavor to a whole chicken that was roasted offset on a gas grill. This tube provided Much more smoke than foil packs or smoke boxes. Nice price too!
Tommy C. : Good product
Does what it’s suppose to do.
John : Five Stars
Works good, good quality, is small and best for smaller grill.
Travis W. West : Cold-smoking miracle tool
This works great for cold-smoking cheese, meats, and even pies before baking them in my Traeger grill. Woo hoo!
J. Carr : Good smoker for a few hours of cooking
Smokes for 2-3 hours as expected. Great for lunchtime.
lloyd fuller : Plenty of smoke
Works as described, puts out plenty of smoke for 1to 2 hrs, would recommend
Guy DiMatteo : Nice simple device
Works as advertised. You do need to get it going with a torch of some type and let it burn for a good ten minutes.
JEFF BAKER : nice addtion to the smoker
Worked as expected
Raymond Allston : Have only used once, but worked like a charm
I have a Masterbuilt electric smoker where I've had a problem with getting enough smoke from the woodchip tray. I adjusted it to sit right on the element, but still doesn't produce what I like.
Along with this, I bought an assortment bag of wood pellets such as apple, mesquite, etc.
I loaded this up with pellets, set it in the (now empty) wood chip tray in my smoker, lit a torch and got them going. I was worried, that they might smother...but not a problem.
Pleased with purchase and looking forward to smoking with different pellets.
Denise Geier : Works well
If you don't have a smoker this will add a little smoke flavor to whatever you are grilling.
daviddsx : Don’t bother
Don’t bother, no flavor big mess
Charles Hebert : Used to add smoke to my electric smoker
I used this with pellets in my electric smoker to get a little more smoke. It really worked great. First time i used i i got too much smoke. But i got used to how long to leave it in the smoker. Always fill it up and use a propane burner or torch to light it.
Geno T. : Smoked goodness
This item works fine. I got a huge bag of pellets at one of the big box stores. The pellets were half price because of a torn bag. I’ll be in smoked goodness for years. The pellets seem to be a little iffy to get started. I think this is due to the pellets, not the tube. The pellets do put out the smoke when I get them going... usually with a torch.
James A Kennedy : Takes practice
The pellets burn too fast. Seen where someone put it on foil too slow the burn. Now it works great. Wish I would have bought the longer one.
Monica : Doesn't do the job
Bought this and was excited couldn't wait to try it , what a disappointment ... Even bought a lighter with the butane torch and once you get the pellets started the don't smoke bear enough and I had to use wood chips also to get any smoke taste ... Do not buy , wish I hadn't ...
Stephanie F : Great Smoker Tube!
Like the design, dont have to worry about it rolling around. Did a great job for a small smoke job.
Reader : A bit overpriced but works fine
Works well in my Traeger Jr. I use a heat gun to ignite the pellets and it definitely helps add smoke, especially at higher temps. If it were cheaper, it would get five stars.
RodV : Great Design
Have owned the “original” manufacturers product for years. Same materials, same functionality. Where this one stands out is the flat sides. I own 6 different smokers and grills. The problem with the round design was that there were some areas that it simply wouldn’t stay in place. Not a problem with this design.
