Answer: This grill has a feature called SmokeBoost, which runs the grill at a lower temperature than would normally be used. This lower temperature produces significantly more smoke. After a period of time, you then raise the temperature to your cook temperature.

I will tell you that I have only ever had Weber grilling products and they 1000% stand behind their products. Side note on the smoker it is electric so keep that in mind when using... ie don’t use in the rain or extreme cold.

How easy is it to remove the pellets if you want to use a different flavor?
Answer: There is a sliding door on the hopper that allows pellets to drop into whatever container you place under the door. There will still be pellets left in the chute and in the auger that you will not be able to remove. These pellets will need to be burned during the first part of the next cook before your new pellets.

Answer: It can get messy if you don’t have a tall bucket or fuel bag. I use the Weber fuel bags, and they work great. You do have to learn to line them up to the chute so the pellets don’t go flying. Some pellets do remain in the auger chute. I can scrape a fair amount out, but you’ll have some left sitting in that chute. I recommend putting an outdoor rug under the grill if you are on a deck. That makes it easy to clean up any dropped pellets and keeps them out of the gaps in the deck.

Answer: So here is the question that rubbed me the wrong way. It is never stated that you have to use Weber pellets but if you have any issue and I mean any issue Weber will say that it is being caused by not using their pellets. I had tons of issues while using traeger pellets then switched to Weber and all the issues remained.

Answer: Use common sense. This smoker does have the open flavorizer bars, so if you have a high fat cook. just put a foil drip pan under your food. The upside of this system is that you can use this like a regular grill with a 600F sear temperature.
Answer: I am sure that it can if you have a lot of fat being dripped, or if you do not keep the smoker clean. I have never experienced a flare-up, but I always clean the smoker between smokes and I do not cook overly fatty meats.

Answer: You really don’t need to, the wood pellets you use provide the flavor. They come in many different woods such as apple, cherry, hickory, pecan, bourbon barrel, etc….

Does this really get as low as 200 degrees and as high as 600? I'm looking for a customer to answer, because I'm a little suspicious about it.
Answer: Using the SmokeBoost feature, the temperature is actually well below 200 degrees at about 165 or so. I have had even lower temperature than that during some SmokeBoost usages. I smoke at 225 degrees for hours, and the smoker maintains that temperature very well, so a constant 200 degrees is definitely achievable. The highest temperature I have used is 450 degrees when the smoker was being seasoned. It achieved that temperature in about 15 minutes, and held it for 45 minutes without any deviation, so I have no doubt that the smoker is capable of 600 degrees.
Answer: Yes. I’ve used it low and slow and I’ve used it to wood grill. If you’re going to use it for high temperatures grilling be prepared to add extra pellets.

Answer: Yes. I've used a Gen2 extensively and have experienced zero issues. It's never had a flare up, burns the pellets almost completely (99% or better) - I've had to empty the tray once and it wasn't even close to being full (after 3 bags of pellets burned to date). Cooks even - have used probes on meat on different sides and internal temp is always within a couple degrees of each other.

Answer: Weber purchased JuneOS some time back and incorporated their software into the SmokeFire. It’s proven easy to use and well-featured. Consider it “proprietary” to Weber. The app works well. Easy to set up. You can make changes on the grill itself or via the mobile app. Both remain synchronized to each other. I’ve used two probes at once (it comes with two), and there’s capacity for four separate probes, which is just impressive as heck to me. All you need are the actual probes that plug into the controller on the grill.

Tony Millsap : Perfect smoker/grill for the beginner or the pro!
I’ve had my Weber SmokeFire EX6 since last fall, and I quickly became a big fan! The assembly appeared a bit daunting when we opened the box, but my teenage son & I were able to assemble it quickly and easily. Once assembled, the initial burn-in went quick & I was ready to smoke! I started off with a couple pork tenderloins, they turned out amazing! Thick smoke ring, fork-tender and so juicy. After that I put it to work cooking our entire Thanksgiving feast: turkey, potatoes, corn & mac n’ cheese. Everything came out awesome! I’ve also done a couple pork butts for a long low smoke session as well as turning the heat up for crispy & juicy chicken wings. Also smoked a ham shank for Christmas that turned out amazing! This smoker/grill has performed beautifully no matter what I have cooked, it is exceeding my expectations at every turn! One thing I noticed right away is the fast start up and quick time to get up to temperature. I live in central Nebraska and it hasn’t exactly been warm out when I’ve used it, and it has kept it’s temp very steady. And after opening the lid to spritz, turn, etc., time back up to temp is quick as well. I also really like the availability of having 4 temp probes right in the Weber Connect on the grill. I have used a Weber iGrill for a few years and having that built right into the grill is great. Another feature I really like is the availability to shut the grill down through the app, I’ve used that pretty much every time because I’ve forgotten to when I’m taking the food off! Being a backyard pitmaster, and owner of a small BBQ catering business, I have been a customer of other brands of pellet smoker/grills for over 15 years. When Weber announced the initial release of the SmokeFire, I really took interest knowing Weber’s long history of quality products. I’m not one to buy things quickly, especially in this price range, without research, and I did a lot on the SmokeFire. After seeing the release the Gen 2 version, I was ready to see what it was all about. And so far, I have been very impressed with the looks, construction, ease of use and most importantly, quality of smoked & grilled meats & foods that have come off my EX6. I would definitely recommend this smoker/grill to anyone, first-time user to seasoned pro!
Manimal : Better then Gen 1, but still has issues.
Out of the first five starts I’ve had three mis-fires where the pellets do not ignite. I thought the first time was my fault as I may have closed the lid too soon to get to temperature. However, I have been very deliberate each time after that. I’m not sure why this is happening. I clean out the pellet burn bucket (pit), but it appears that too many pellets drop in and smother the flame. I then vacuum the pellets out of the pit and reignite while watching. It will start on the second try. This is now so common that I cleaned up a small vacuum just to vacuum the pellets out of the pit and then I can redump them back into the pellet bin as it is usually a good handful or two of pellets. The cooking has been flawless. A brisket, Chuck roast, whole chicken, Seared ribeye steaks and corn on the cob all came out perfect. The temperature control is spot on and the probes work well. The phone app is very convenient, but a little clunky to use.
Awesome product : Awesome Grill but the temperature is so inaccurate not worth it. Get a pit boss or something else.
Temperature reads wrong which impacts cook. Sometimes the grill just stops smoking needing me to restart it... so I have to be around it 24/7... sucks

This Weber SmokeFire EX6 (2nd Gen) pellet grill is fantastic! The grill is great looking and constructed of premium-quality materials. Most importantly, it does an awesome job smoking and grilling. While I am not a Grill Master by any stretch, I am incredibly impressed with this beast of a grill!
ASSEMBLY: There is quite a bit of assembly required with the grill, but Weber makes the process easy. The included assembly instructions are well-written and easy to follow. If you prefer, Weber offers the assembly instructions on the Bilt app, which is a free 3D step-by-step audio/visual assembly app. I used the printed manual, but I did look over the Bilt app, and it certainly would be helpful during the assembly process. Working solo, and at a slow pace, I had the grill assembled in about two hours, including cleanup afterwards. Weber designed the assembly process to be as easy as possible by including clearly identified boxes with each of the components inside packed in the order that they are used in the assembly.
I appreciate that Weber includes two spare ignitors. I do not know much about pellet grills, but I assume that the ignitors wear out as quickly as they do on propane grills.
OPERATION: The grill operates by loading pellets into the hopper which has a motorized auger that releases them as needed into the combustion chamber, where they are ignited. There is a fan that aids the combustion process and helps with the circulation of heat and smoke.
There is a control panel that you use to set the various parameters of your cooking. Here, you can adjust the grill’s temperature, cook time, food temperature, or select a preprogrammed cook mode.
There is the capability of using four food temperature probes (two are included with the grill) and setting each of these probes for their own temperature alert. This is especially helpful if you are cooking different types or sizes of meats and want to monitor each separately.
One of the unique features of this grill is the SmokeBoost setting, which operates the grill at a low temperature (between 165-200 degrees) to briefly smoke the meat, before you raise the temperature to sear and complete the cooking process. At the low temperature, the pellets give off maximum smoke which the food absorbs. When you switch to the higher temperature, the pellets burn more rapidly, generating less smoke and quickly completing the cooking process.
BLUETOOTH / WIFI / WEBER CONNECT APP: The Weber Connect app connects to the grill via Bluetooth or WiFi. The app lets you control and monitor the grill almost the same as you would through the control panel, but without needing to be at the grill. The Bluetooth connection has limited range, but using the WiFi connection allows control of the grill from anywhere. When first accessed, the app walked me through the Bluetooth pairing process, and then through the optional WiFi connection. After being connected, the app immediately initiated an update of the grill’s software. This took about 20 minutes. Likely for safety purposes, the grill cannot be started from the app; it must be started from the grill’s control panel.
Connectivity with the app was a problem for me. I can connect to the app with either Bluetooth or WiFi, but if I only connect with WiFi, I am unable to see any temperatures or adjust any settings. The display shows “connected," and the WiFi bars show, but I'm unable to actually use the app. With WiFi on, as soon as I turn on Bluetooth, everything works normally. Most interestingly, if I then disable Bluetooth, but leave WiFi running, everything continues to work normally. It is as if Bluetooth creates a “bridge” for WiFi to connect properly, and once it does, Bluetooth can be disabled.
SEASONING THE GRILL PRIOR TO FIRST USE: After assembly, I followed the recommended seasoning process, which is to bring the grill up to 450 degrees for 30-40 minutes and then let it cool. During the seasoning process, it took the grill about 3 minutes to start smoking, at which time the lid was closed. It then took the grill about 15 minutes to get to 450 degrees.
After about 20 minutes, the grill started steadily losing temperature. I received a Grill Temperature Drop warning on the app, saying to close the lid and check the pellets. The lid was already down, so I stirred the pellets by hand. This seemed to fix the problem. About a minute later, I could hear pellets being dropped into the combustion chamber. The temperature got as low as 225 degrees before it began to rise again. Later, there was a Low Fuel warning. Since I did not fully load the hopper, when the pellets dropped below a certain level it triggered a sensor, which in turn triggered an alert. I am thrilled with this remote warning feature, since they are helpful in avoiding cooking issues.
After the required seasoning time, I initiated the grill’s shutdown feature from the app. Pressing and holding the control panel knob sends the grill into its shutdown mode, where it immediately stops feeding pellets, and proceeds to cooldown. It took about 15 minutes to complete this process.
FIRST USE: For my first use of the grill, I smoked and grilled thin (1/2") pork steaks. After seasoning the steaks with a dry rub, I placed them on the grill and started the SmokeBoost setting, which I ran for 1.5 hours. As part of my testing process, two steaks were placed on the upper rack and two were on the lower rack. I used both of the included temperature probes to measure the meat’s temperature. There was definitely a significant amount of smoke being generated.
A complaint that I have is that during the SmokeBoost process, neither the app nor the display panel, report the grill’s temperature. I used my own digital meat thermometer to track the temperature. During this process, the temperature never exceeded 138 degrees, not quite the 165-200 degrees that the manual says that it should reach in this mode. The outside temperature was about 65 degrees. While this is not a problem since hot-smoking ranges from 100-200 degrees, I am curious as to why it did not reach the target temperature specified in the manual. At the end of the 1.5 hours, the meat’s temperature was 91 degrees on the top rack and 93 degrees on the bottom rack.
At this point, I adjusted the grill’s temperature (using the app) to 425 degrees for final cooking. The pork steaks were placed on the main grilling surface for a few minutes, flipped, then removed from the grill.
Our pork steaks were slightly overcooked. They should have been removed from the grill about 3-4 minutes sooner (as I stated earlier, I am not a Grill Master). However, they were absolutely delicious. They tasted like they were fully-smoked, even though they only spent 1.5 hours in the smoker. Throughout the entire meal, we kept repeating to each other just how incredible the smoked pork tasted.

My Weber EX6 (2nd Generation) was delivered in November and I wanted to give it some time to prove itself before posting a performance review. Packaging was great and assembly smooth (45 minutes). There were a few sharp metal component edges that required some caution during assembly. The classic black enamel coating is very well done though there is a small area inside the pellet hopper cover that wasn’t evenly coated and a small spidered spot by the ash drawer. Both areas are out of sight but remain in my mind on an $$$ grill.
Smokefire construction is solid. The large hood is well balanced and controls easily accessible. It would be great to have a small integrated convenience drawer under the shelf to hold the spare glow plugs, temp sensors, scraper, etc. I would also prefer a larger disposable drip pan for the grease/ash drawer to collect all that falls in and minimize clean out, not a big deal.
I have smoked several slabs of baby back ribs, 3 brisket points, sausage, a pork tip, salmon filets and all were absolutely phenomenal. Just a note that a lot of this grilling was done in cold, windy MN winter weather and the Smokefire held consistent temp throughout. The wireless features performed well allowing temp viewing and adjustments without braving the elements.
This grill has performed great in every aspect and has not only been lot of fun to use but the results have exceeded expectations.

We’ve used the smoker several times. A handful of times, it does what it wants. These few times were when I was smoking a pork shoulder and the process went on past 12 hours. When I checked on the temperature, it was rising above the set temperature and I could not control with my phone or on the screen of the smoker. It went rogue! Taste was great! Just have to pay attention to it and I would not 100% trust the app to alert you.

Best grill I have ever owned. The installation process is really easy. This is a solid grill/smoker not cheaply made at all, It is shiny black with tasteful additions of polished stainless steel.
It can cook low and slow all day long or sear steaks at 600 degrees. The App is slick, including the intuitive Weber step-by-step guides for cooking. The grill has a lot of flexibility, from smoking to grilling. It distributes the heat evenly which makes perfect smoked ribs.

Out of the first five starts I’ve had three mis-fires where the pellets do not ignite. I thought the first time was my fault as I may have closed the lid too soon to get to temperature. However, I have been very deliberate each time after that. I’m not sure why this is happening. I clean out the pellet burn bucket (pit), but it appears that too many pellets drop in and smother the flame. I then vacuum the pellets out of the pit and reignite while watching. It will start on the second try. This is now so common that I cleaned up a small vacuum just to vacuum the pellets out of the pit and then I can redump them back into the pellet bin as it is usually a good handful or two of pellets. The cooking has been flawless. A brisket, Chuck roast, whole chicken, Seared ribeye steaks and corn on the cob all came out perfect. The temperature control is spot on and the probes work well. The phone app is very convenient, but a little clunky to use.

This overall made some great steaks but there are flaws. The app was easy to use and has pre-set meat types, thickness sized temperature for the type of finished cook you want. I’ll always be a medium rare steak eater so the probes that come with this grill is great for keeping an eye for the meats doneness. The app lets you know when to flip and take off your meat. After I took my meat off and was still cooking my asparagus, the temperature kept rising so that’s worrisome that it’s not keeping the temperature you set and I do smoke my jerky so I’ll be able to test that out next weekend. I mainly got this for that reason that it’s supposed to control the temperature and I’m not having to sit outside messing with the temperature to control it to 200-225 for smoking my jerky. There were a lot of parts that came damaged, as in, bent pieces. All of the functions still worked though. When I’m done smoking my jerky, I’ll update this review to see how it controlled the smoking temperature.

After inviting friends over and cooking out of a tiny round grill, which the brisket still came out amazing, I didn't want to be hovering over the grill most of the time I had company over so it was time... I bought a dad grill lmfao. I couldn't be happier! The probe on point! The fire and pellets on point! When used correctly and taken care of appropriately its a dream!

I’ve had my Weber SmokeFire EX6 since last fall, and I quickly became a big fan! The assembly appeared a bit daunting when we opened the box, but my teenage son & I were able to assemble it quickly and easily. Once assembled, the initial burn-in went quick & I was ready to smoke! I started off with a couple pork tenderloins, they turned out amazing! Thick smoke ring, fork-tender and so juicy. After that I put it to work cooking our entire Thanksgiving feast: turkey, potatoes, corn & mac n’ cheese. Everything came out awesome! I’ve also done a couple pork butts for a long low smoke session as well as turning the heat up for crispy & juicy chicken wings. Also smoked a ham shank for Christmas that turned out amazing! This smoker/grill has performed beautifully no matter what I have cooked, it is exceeding my expectations at every turn! One thing I noticed right away is the fast start up and quick time to get up to temperature. I live in central Nebraska and it hasn’t exactly been warm out when I’ve used it, and it has kept it’s temp very steady. And after opening the lid to spritz, turn, etc., time back up to temp is quick as well. I also really like the availability of having 4 temp probes right in the Weber Connect on the grill. I have used a Weber iGrill for a few years and having that built right into the grill is great. Another feature I really like is the availability to shut the grill down through the app, I’ve used that pretty much every time because I’ve forgotten to when I’m taking the food off! Being a backyard pitmaster, and owner of a small BBQ catering business, I have been a customer of other brands of pellet smoker/grills for over 15 years. When Weber announced the initial release of the SmokeFire, I really took interest knowing Weber’s long history of quality products. I’m not one to buy things quickly, especially in this price range, without research, and I did a lot on the SmokeFire. After seeing the release the Gen 2 version, I was ready to see what it was all about. And so far, I have been very impressed with the looks, construction, ease of use and most importantly, quality of smoked & grilled meats & foods that have come off my EX6. I would definitely recommend this smoker/grill to anyone, first-time user to seasoned pro!

I ordered on a month ago and have used it a dozen times. Literally load it at 6 am with the big stuff and got to work. Come home at lunch and load the smaller stuff and dinner is ready at 6. Stays 200 all day long. Mine has never varied up or down. All pellets work as long as they are the same shape. I have used pellets from all 3 name brands. Just did Easter with the parents and nephews and my sons family.10 people and had plenty of left overs. If your pondering the larger size..... Just do it. My dad was so impressed i ordered one for him and it was at his house the day after they traveled back. Called me in tears over it. It's that awesome of a smoker. I've had two weber propane grills that added up to 15yrs between them both and don't know if ill use them again. So easy to cook. Zero flare ups. no checking on your meat. Probes work excellent. And to see them on your phone is priceless as we drank at the fire pit all day and never worried.

Great grill! It makes slow cooking and smoking meats very easy with its self regulated temperature. Use drip pans for very greasy cooks! Many of the nightmare stories that I read come from people fast cooking and also not using drip pans. This grill is not really meant for fast cooking so don't count on it replacing your old bbq grill.

The 2nd gen Smokefire is terrific. Don’t be misled by reviews of the very flawed 1st gen version. This grill rocks on every level: materials, build quality, performance. Weber had to price it at a discount to get buyers to take the risk it wasn’t a gen 1 with bandaid fixes. Gen 2 is a beast!

Have used this 6 times now. Assembly was a breeze. Have used temps between 225 and 600 and so far perfect. Did 4 ribeyes at 600 and no flare ups. If I had to make one criticism it’s that the pellets tend to get hung up at a a point and I get the message to refill. I just open the hopper and push them down but that is the only issue I’ve had.

Like any other tool, it requires skill and practice to master. There is some effort required to setup and learn how it works. If you have a working knowledge of grilling and smoking you can produce some amazing dishes.

Webb : Challenges Left and Right, Great Food Regardless
This is a difficult review to write. I've had pellet grills for the last 15+ years from another major brand and when I saw the Weber SmokeFire, I was excited about getting a next-generation grill that included everything that has been learned from other pellet grills over the years. I had seen some comments about original SmokeFire grills so I was hopeful that this 2nd Gen grill would have all those kinks worked out. (Spoiler, they haven't but I'm hopeful.)
Looking at the features of the grill, I was really impressed. The wifi & Bluetooth controller with 4 built-in slots for thermometers seemed great. The build quality of the grill itself seemed really great with thick metal. The overall cooking area of the EX6 is welcome with being able to cook as much food as we want as opposed to limiting our recipes by grill space.
I was also impressed with some of the little ideas like the chute that the pellets slide down instead of a horizontal pellet path that can allow pellets to burn before their time.
I also really like the integrated grease drip tray and ash collector in the bottom. I thought this would make the occasional cleaning of the grill a breeze. Something we rarely did with our previous grills.
Unfortunately, when the grill arrived, it included trouble from day one. After the grill was assembled, it turned on for a moment, the fan spun up, and then immediately produced a fan error (E2). After some time with Weber support, they decided I needed a replacement fan. It arrived a few days later and while removing the old one I saw the problem. The fan wire was installed incorrectly at the factory and it caused a couple of the wires to be cut as it was screwed in. Sure enough, the replacement fan solved the problem. It was a bummer waiting the few days for it to come. Weber did offer me a free bag of pellets as an apology for the problems but they never came. I sent them an email and they apologized again and they came.
I'm sorry to say, it wasn't smooth sailing after the fan issue. I'll spare you all the details but the next 4 cooks were each delayed by issues with the grill. One time the grill would not start, after some research, I found that there was a common issue with the glow plug losing contact and not working. I replaced the plug and used a bit of baling wire to secure it and that hasn't been an issue since. Delaying our Thanksgiving turkey dinner by an hour and a half was not something I was thankful for.
I had another issue with the pellets not feeding correctly and the fire going out. More research revealed that removing the finger guard that prevents you from sticking your fingers into the auger can cause pellets to not feed correctly. I removed it and that hasn't been an issue since.
I've had a couple of issues that seem to be software/firmware issues, there have been a few software updates that seem to have smoothed things out on that front. FYI, there are a few things to update, the iPhone app, the grill controller firmware, and the grill controller software all might need to be updated. You'll want to check all 3. I ran into an issue where the process for updating the software wasn't working and eventually found out that version wasn't triggering the update alert but if you left the app open while it was connected via Bluetooth it would eventually update in the background on its own.
While I seem to be working through the issues, I have yet to have many cooks go completely seamless. Our latest prime rib we made for Christmas came out amazing but I went to visit my parents while it was on the grill and was checking the progress via the app and it lost connection and I had to call home to have someone check the temperature for me.
Weber does have recommendations that are supposed to help minimize the issues with their grills. Specifically, they recommend cleaning the grill often and only using Weber pellets. While I'm sure these will help, I feel like they are not the core of any issues with the grill. As I mentioned I've used pellet grills for 15+ years from the original pellet grill brand and only cleaned the grill every year or so and always used any pellets I wanted and never had any issues. I'm sure Weber designs their pellets to avoid issues with the grill and cleaning will help but I feel like those shouldn't be a necessity for the grill to function correctly.
I don't want to finish the review without mentioning the positive. This grill does make amazing food. When everything goes smoothly it is fantastic. The level of smoke that comes from low and slow cooking has made for some great brisket and pulled pork. As you can see from the pictures, the bright pink area on the outside is the "smoke ring" and it comes out fantastic.
The fact that the grill goes to higher temperatures it is great for searing steaks and cooking burgers. I've found that even at higher temperatures the grill does a great job of giving a solid smoke flavor that I've not seen from other pellet grills I've owned.
I am hopeful that the combination of me working through the issues and Weber making progress with their software will at some point make this a great grill I can feel confident in for every cook. Right now I'm hesitant every time I use it and feel like I need to be keeping an eye on it more often than I should.
I'm very sad to have to give this grill such a low rating. In my research working through issues, I've found some very helpful groups of people who have had a completely different experience than mine and can highly recommend the grills themselves. I've even seen some surveys of owners where every single person thinks the grills are amazing so it seems, my issues are unique in some way.
Overall, I'm still pleased with the "Weber 23510201 SmokeFire EX6 (2nd Gen) Wood Fired Pellet Grill, Black" and love the food it makes. My hope is that I'll be able to update this review in future months saying that the issues I've had are all in the past.
