Questions about Smokin Wedgie - Stainless Steel - BBQ Pellet Smoker Box
Q:
How do you stop the smoke once you’re done cooking?
Answer: You can just let it continue to smoke until it smolders itself out or remove it with a spatula or heat-resistant glove and pour water on it. Some people only fill it part-way when they learn how long they need it to smoke.
Answer: I simply let it burn out.
Q:
Can you use wood chips or should you just use pellets?
Answer: We have customers that have used half pellets and about half wood chips. I believe too many wood chips and it just burns up too quickly.
Answer: I use it in my electric smoker so I can burn pellets and have smoke over a longer period of time without having to refill every 30min. I do add a layer of chips in the wedgie as well. I get 2-3hrs of smoke
Answer: I suppose you could get wood chips to work in this, but the larger holes in wood chip boxes keep them from going out, and without an external heat source I think they would self-extinguish here. The point of these pellet boxes is to be able to cold smoke something (a meat process?) as well as doing higher temperature smoking. You can use a propane torch to get the pellets going, put on the lid, close smoker (or cover grill) and they will continue to smoke and burn until they run out. With wood chips or sawdust they burn too fast if dry and require heating / fire under them if wet/damp.
Answer: Hi. It was made for pellets but many folks blend pellets with chips, up to half and half. You need to know Chips burn faster. I think the pellets have a cleaner smoke flavor (as I compare it to chips burned in the masterbuilt electric or the masterbuilt cold smoke accessory.). I hope this helps. I am very happy with the wedgie. I get up to 6 hours smoke from pellets.
Answer: Far as I know, this only works with pellets. It works well though! You can pick up flavored pellets at Wal-Mart or Academy now too.
Q:
Could you put a few pieces of charcoal in it and put it in the corner of a pellet grill?
Answer: If you mean charcoal only to burn in the grill, I am sure it would work. If you mean Charcoal in with the pellets, well I don't know about that. I know I use a propane torch for several minutes to get the pellets good and started shouldering, the best smoke is after about 30+ min after lighting. I don't know if the reduced airflow to the charcoal with the pellets would smother the charcoal.
Answer: As far as would a few pieces of charcoal fit in the Wedgie? Yes, small pieces would fit in the Wedgie. .
Answer: Yes, but I don’t see the point. The whole reason to use this is to add smoke to a propane style grill. But it should work fine if you chose to use it that way.
Answer: I would not see any reason why you couldn't.
Q:
can I just put this on the heating element of an electric smoker without lighting it and the heating element will keep it going? r
Answer: I do not know the answer to your question because I do not have an electric heating element. I will say that when I use it, I use a torch for about 15 min to get it going, it takes about an hour to really get it smoking good. Once it is lit and smoldering, it keeps itself going. The smoke will last about 2-3 hours. I assume an electric element would get it going, but it likely will take much longer to really get it smoking good.
Answer: If you do end up doing this, please let us know if it works or not. From my experiences, I have to initially light the pellets and make sure they are lit and smoking for about 45 to 60 seconds. After that time frame, they burn themselves until gone.
Answer: That's a very good question. I intend to try that. Otherwise, I have not been able to keep mine lit.
Q:
Trying to understand. Do you light this put it in your smoker, then set the heat in your smoker to 75 degrees? Nothing in my wood chip box?
Answer: We used it as our wood chip box. Did not set it on fire for our smoker. Our smoker is a gas one though. It works really well for smoker or the grill
Answer: Essentially yes. You light the wedgie with a torch let it flame for a couple minutes, then put the lid on it, and then put it in yoursmoker. It's low heat so you don't need to put it in your side box if you don't need to.
Answer: You are correct. I place my Wedgie on a shelf and leave the wood box empty. I set my temperature to the to the temperature that the item I am cooking calls for. I love cooking with my wedgies.
Answer: I use it with charcoal and wood so I’m not sure how it would work with a traegger type cooker. I would use wood pellets or chips in the wood chip box. Usually what I do is start the wedge and place the meat directly over it and “ cold smoke” the meat before putting the charcoal and wood on the opposite side for indirect heating. I’ve only done this with brisket but it’s always come out good. I hope that helps.
Answer: Hi, you fill with wood pellets (or wood pellets mixed with some wood chips), light one end (or both for more smoke for shorter time) blow flame out after a minute if it doesn’t go out to a smoking smolder on its own. Please in smoker. You can cold smoke with no heat if cool enough or set your smoker to the desired temps. The full wedgie generally smokes for 4-5 hours or more. I hope this answers your question.
Answer: Yes, you light it. This only provides smoke. You still have to adjust the temperature on your smoke.
Answer: this just provides additional smoke to your current method ....it is an add on and works well for providing that component
Q:
How long does it smoke for?
Answer: The Smokin Wedgie generally smokes for 2.5-5 hours depending on the temperature, but also what seems to effect it more is the airflow. On the Masterbuilt Electric Smokers, it's about 5 hours. On a pellet grill running full-tilt, it's just about 2.5 hours due to the convection fan.
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: depends on the heat lower heat will burn for hours but as soon as you up the heat it goes pretty quick.
Q:
What is the best thing to light the pellets with? Do i have to get a torch or can i use something else?
Answer: An inexpensive electric heat gun is the best that I have found. Torches work well, but it seems to take a bit longer. I have heard of people using food grade parafin and also unscented hand sanitizer.
Answer: A torch works the best, it takes some time to get the pellets started, once they are started, it is a wonderful thing:)
Answer: I use a little propane torch that screws to the 1lb cylinders. Works great for lighting the pellets.

Product reviews of Smokin Wedgie - Stainless Steel - BBQ Pellet Smoker Box
Rosemary Brannon : Four Stars
Gave it to my son and he liked it.
JC : Worked great, did the job
Dusted off my electric smoker and threw this guy in. Worked great, did the job, pellets lasted over 2 hours per tray. Didnt have to tend to the smoke like before.
Mariah : Changes color
Used this one time and the color is completely changed. Not a clean silver now it looks old and dirty and I can’t get it clean
S. Reihart : Works GREAT. I'm well please and have advice for others trying to maintain smoke.
The problem with any smoke generator is getting enough oxygen into the chamber to allow the fuel (pellets) to stay lit. I have a Smoke Hollow propane smoker. The propane burners seem to use most of the oxygen, so I was having trouble keeping my smoke generators lit. I knew it wasn't so much the smoke generator, but the lack of oxygen. I got the Smokin Wedgies because I liked the shape, feeling it would be easier to get it lit and maintained, since you begin at a smaller end (uses less oxygen) and then as it burns it ignites the larger area as it burns toward the center of the triangle. I decided to take the water pan out of the smoker to allow more room for air to circulate, lit my wedgie and it took off beautifully. I'm not sure if it is because of the shape of the wedgie, or removing the water pan to allow more airflow, but I'm tickled pink that I have nice, visible thin blue smoke coming out of my smoker! Good product and does what it's supposed to do. So my advice is if you're having trouble keeping any smoke generator lit and smoking, explore avenues that will allow more air/oxygen the ability to get into your smoke chamber and to the smoker generator.
Zubz : Terrific Product
Great item for my Masterbuilt electric smoker. No more waking up to tend to those overnight smokes.
Earl G. : Works Very Well!
This seems to be well made, and holds 1 lb. of pellets. Great for cold smoking or adding extra smoke to a pellet smoker. I haven't tried the various pellets that are offered by this company yet, but will be trying some soon. I may consider getting a second Wedgie for extended smoking times.
Josh D. : This is so easy a caveman can do it
This is so easy a caveman can do it! It takes a little longer than I expected to get it to light but that has nothing to do with the wedge. It does exactly as it is designed to do and I like this design better than the tubes.
Liam12 : I liked the idea of not having to tend the wood ...
I liked the idea of not having to tend the wood chips in my smoker so often, so I bought this. It burns slow and smokes a lot, but it increased the heat in my electric smoker and I ruined the briskets I smoked using this. I will use my cold smoker attachment next time so I can better control the heat applied directly to the meat. I bet that will work just fine.
Fish&Flowers : Good smoker tool (for now?)
This is a bit pricey for the size of it, but it works perfectly for me. Just hope it doesn't corrode / rot away as fast as the chip holder smoker boxes I have used in the past....
Christina Royse : Five Stars
Works great, I prefer it over the amazin tube

ryan : Keep torch on pellets for 60 seconds
Out of way doesn’t take much room plenty of room for wood chunks on top of pellets
linda stricker : Smokin Wedgies
It puts out a lot of smoke for flavor and the pellets that are used in the Wedgies last a long time. Also there are numerous pellets to choose from that provide various flavors.
fwayland : This device works like a champ
This item really works, and on almost any grill or smoker. I have a pellet grill, and it doesn't put off much smoke because it is built to be efficient. Use this to pre smoke foods before you turn on the heat. I have cold smokes bacon, Canadian style loin bacon, and many other pork and chicken cuts. This device works like a champ. I use a propane torch for a minute or two to get it started and it smokes heavy for at least 2 hours.

Happy
Ed : SMOKE!
1st time using this in my PitBoss Pellet grill! Key is to let the meat smoke for about an hour BEFORE you start the grill and temp setting. Convection cooking grills have forced air fans to oxygenate the pellets for fire and circulation. Con is that is blows all the smoke out! So....simply lay your ribs or meat of choice on your CLEAN grill and watch the smoke for over an hour!!!!!! I let mine for 1.5 hours and then started my pellet grill......flavor was great!
Simply fill your container with pellets....light them (I use a torch for speed), let the top layer stay on fire for about 5 minutes then blow it out. Shoved in the back of my grill, placed on the meat, closed the lid.....SMOKE....A LOT of it for a long time. Again......CLEAN your grill 1st so your meat is not touching bad bacteria. This is a game changer for my pellet grill! I have now done ribs and whole chicken!!!! Nice flavor!!!!
curt henkel : produces alot of smoke
works great for cold smoking or adding smoke to cooking
Nathen Markus : Good WITH A CATCH
I would give this 5 stars but there is a learning curve to this thing and hear me out. If not properly used you will have terrible smoke or flame ups or both.
1. When packing the wedgie fill it evenly to the top do not over fill it. I use Lumber Jack pellets and they burn very well in this unit. Make sure your lid is sitting flat.
2. When lighting there's no need to light it from both ends in fact I have good smoke production for 4+ hours lighting a single end.
3. the holes meant to start it give you a good idea where to start but if you are just pointing your torch at that hole you're going to be disappointed. you need to start a good corner on FIRE and let it BURN for a good 45sec - 1min before you extinguish it. I use the little tumbleweeds and just set the corner of my wedgie on it and let it go while i start the grill.
4. Keep it away from direct air flow on pellet grills and away from the walls. So take care of where you are placing this that your drip pan or something is protecting the bottom from too much air, this will cause a flame up (think of how your fire pot starts, heat + air) and i like to center it on the bottom rack on the side furthest from my stack and use my top 2 shelves for smoking, bottom in a pinch.
5. KEEP IT AWAY FROM YOUR FOOD. the box it self gets VERY HOT from burning pellets inside. i loaned this to someone to test and he literally burned one end of a rack of ribs because he had this thing directly under that side
Otherwise this is a very good unit. This last time around I ran it while I smoked a brisket at 180 for 8 hours over night. I don't know when the box finally ran out but it was too hot to touch when I refilled it in the morning. I set the smoker back up at 275 to finish it off and the box was producing good smoke the entire time even after I wrapped it and well after it was done (4-5 hours). I purposely left it in to see how much longer after I wrapped it would go, I stopped caring "long enuff"...
S. Smoter : Tried Others and this is the BEST
Yes, we've tried other pellet containers for our electric smoker and they never worked right. But this one does! Now our food has that perfect smoked taste. You will love it!

I use this in my MES 30 and love the fact that I can get 3-4 hours of smoke without having to mess around with constantly loading wood chip chamber on my electric smoker.
Doug : Compact easy lighting
Holds a lot of pellets and lights easy
Doug A : This product works Awesome !!
I have used this on the grill and in my Smoker. Everything turns out AMAZING !!!!
Michael Petras : awesome but invest in a good torch
pretty amazing idea. be sure to have a bad ass butane torch to light it. i used a cigar lighter and had to refill it 6 times before i got this thing cherried up and rolling. smoked some bricks of cheese and i'll be smoking a ton more cheese because this thing is the greatest.
Matthieu Medrano : Would buy again
It works! It burns and makes good amounts of smoke as you can see from the pictures. I set one hole on fire and got smoke for about 3 1/2ish hours or so. If you do cheese dont put your cheese above the wedge. I was so excited to use it that I wasnt thinking.
M&M : Perfect tool for cold smoking
Works just as described. Perfect tool for cold smoking.
Melissa D : Wouldn’t stay lit
Bought this for use with wood pellets and I used a torch to light and wouldn’t stay lit (even after using the torch for multiple seconds). Very disappointing. In the process of returning it.

Matthew : Awesome! Buy it!
Awesome! I have been putting off buying one of these for sometime... that being said I wish I would have bought 2 of these and some pellets instead of my cold smoker. My cold smoker worked great for about a year and then burned out. The “Wedgie” produces a much smoother and consistent smoke! This is a fantastic product and I will be buying more!
Randy : Easy to use
Love this thing for just a little bit more extra smoke flavor if you wish. Smoke and cheese this is a must have. Just fill it light it and forget it
JC : Worked great, did the job
Dusted off my electric smoker and threw this guy in. Worked great, did the job, pellets lasted over 2 hours per tray. Didnt have to tend to the smoke like before.
