Q:
How do you stop the smoke once you’re done cooking?
Answer: You can just let it continue to smoke until it smolders itself out or remove it with a spatula or heat-resistant glove and pour water on it. Some people only fill it part-way when they learn how long they need it to smoke.

Can you use wood chips or should you just use pellets?
Answer: We have customers that have used half pellets and about half wood chips. I believe too many wood chips and it just burns up too quickly.
Answer: I use it in my electric smoker so I can burn pellets and have smoke over a longer period of time without having to refill every 30min. I do add a layer of chips in the wedgie as well. I get 2-3hrs of smoke
Answer: I suppose you could get wood chips to work in this, but the larger holes in wood chip boxes keep them from going out, and without an external heat source I think they would self-extinguish here. The point of these pellet boxes is to be able to cold smoke something (a meat process?) as well as doing higher temperature smoking. You can use a propane torch to get the pellets going, put on the lid, close smoker (or cover grill) and they will continue to smoke and burn until they run out. With wood chips or sawdust they burn too fast if dry and require heating / fire under them if wet/damp.
Answer: Hi. It was made for pellets but many folks blend pellets with chips, up to half and half. You need to know Chips burn faster. I think the pellets have a cleaner smoke flavor (as I compare it to chips burned in the masterbuilt electric or the masterbuilt cold smoke accessory.). I hope this helps. I am very happy with the wedgie. I get up to 6 hours smoke from pellets.
Answer: Far as I know, this only works with pellets. It works well though! You can pick up flavored pellets at Wal-Mart or Academy now too.

Could you put a few pieces of charcoal in it and put it in the corner of a pellet grill?
Answer: If you mean charcoal only to burn in the grill, I am sure it would work. If you mean Charcoal in with the pellets, well I don't know about that. I know I use a propane torch for several minutes to get the pellets good and started shouldering, the best smoke is after about 30+ min after lighting. I don't know if the reduced airflow to the charcoal with the pellets would smother the charcoal.

Answer: I do not know the answer to your question because I do not have an electric heating element. I will say that when I use it, I use a torch for about 15 min to get it going, it takes about an hour to really get it smoking good. Once it is lit and smoldering, it keeps itself going. The smoke will last about 2-3 hours. I assume an electric element would get it going, but it likely will take much longer to really get it smoking good.
Answer: If you do end up doing this, please let us know if it works or not. From my experiences, I have to initially light the pellets and make sure they are lit and smoking for about 45 to 60 seconds. After that time frame, they burn themselves until gone.

Answer: We used it as our wood chip box. Did not set it on fire for our smoker. Our smoker is a gas one though. It works really well for smoker or the grill
Answer: Essentially yes. You light the wedgie with a torch let it flame for a couple minutes, then put the lid on it, and then put it in yoursmoker. It's low heat so you don't need to put it in your side box if you don't need to.
Answer: You are correct. I place my Wedgie on a shelf and leave the wood box empty. I set my temperature to the to the temperature that the item I am cooking calls for. I love cooking with my wedgies.
Answer: I use it with charcoal and wood so I’m not sure how it would work with a traegger type cooker. I would use wood pellets or chips in the wood chip box. Usually what I do is start the wedge and place the meat directly over it and “ cold smoke” the meat before putting the charcoal and wood on the opposite side for indirect heating. I’ve only done this with brisket but it’s always come out good. I hope that helps.
Answer: Hi, you fill with wood pellets (or wood pellets mixed with some wood chips), light one end (or both for more smoke for shorter time) blow flame out after a minute if it doesn’t go out to a smoking smolder on its own. Please in smoker. You can cold smoke with no heat if cool enough or set your smoker to the desired temps. The full wedgie generally smokes for 4-5 hours or more. I hope this answers your question.

Answer: The Smokin Wedgie generally smokes for 2.5-5 hours depending on the temperature, but also what seems to effect it more is the airflow. On the Masterbuilt Electric Smokers, it's about 5 hours. On a pellet grill running full-tilt, it's just about 2.5 hours due to the convection fan.

Answer: An inexpensive electric heat gun is the best that I have found. Torches work well, but it seems to take a bit longer. I have heard of people using food grade parafin and also unscented hand sanitizer.

Okay, so i have used this for a couple years now...I love the idea of these little pellet tube style smoker boxes etc... the Wedgie is one of the better ones i own and use! It has a bigger cpacity than the smaller tube style i have so it last longer....IF i can get it to stay lit! And thats the problem i have with these things! I dont know what it is but anytime i try using these to add smoke/flavor to whatever it is im smoking in my pellet smoker, i usually just end up psd off and annoyed because I cant for the life of me keep these things lit! i use a torch and torch the hll out of both sides to make sure its completely lit and flaming big let it sit and burn like a candle for a good 10 minutes until i know its oging really good and then i stick it in my smoker...its smokes like crazy for maybe 15-20 minutes and then goes out ...No oxygen inside the smoker, aka no fire, no way to keep this thing smoking! I have fought it threw a 6 hour smoke a few times when i really wanted to get that extra flavor and it really does add flavor to whatever your smoking, alot more flavor than the pellet smoker itself would give ...but its annoying having to fight to keep it lit the entire time you use it! And to clarify its not my pellets im using because i have used many different brands, anything from pit boss, Treager, LumberJack etc etc...and I always store my pellets in air tight/water tight containers so its not a problem of my pellets being wet! maybe i would have better lucky if i microwaved my pellets like some othe people do before using them, but i have never tried that so cant speak on if that helps or not!
So overall, I really do like the wedgie! I have many different styles of these things and the wedgie is the one i use the most, very well built, great quality, and i love how you can tuck it away in the back corner of the smoker! Just know that in my experience i have to fight to keep it lit every time i use it...but thats not a wedgie problem, thats just a problem in general with all of these smoker tube box deals. Hopefully you have better luck than me! They really do give alot more flavor to your meat so worth the money i think! Good luck! Happy smoke'n~!

Dusted off my electric smoker and threw this guy in. Worked great, did the job, pellets lasted over 2 hours per tray. Didnt have to tend to the smoke like before.

This is so easy a caveman can do it! It takes a little longer than I expected to get it to light but that has nothing to do with the wedge. It does exactly as it is designed to do and I like this design better than the tubes.

I have used the Amazen square model for 6 months now. It works as designed except it is designed for longer burns with low smoke. Typically, if I want denser smoke in shorter time, have to light at both ends. Just trying this Smokin Wedgie for first time. Filled almost to top was only 2 cups of pellets. Lit thru only 1 hole and allowed pellets to slowly catch and burn one end to other, set alarm for 1 hour intervals. I believe I will get 3 hours by only lighting thru one hole. Lit pellets thru hole with propane torch until small cone flame appeared. As with other products like this, I allowed the small cone to burn 5 minutes, blew it out, placed lid on smoker box. Closed lid on cooker and watched as this product immediately produced twice the smoke as my Amazen, due to more burning pellets at once. See attached photos. I use it for cold smoking meats, cheese and veggies. Then when ready to eat, finish on propane grill. I am on hour 2 and inside cooking area temp is holding at 102 degrees, excellent! If I want temp lower, I can place small tray of ice inside where heat enters smoking chamber. See attached photos. You can use this to cold smoke with any cooker. Just light and place where fuel source goes. For cold smoking, I purchased this small 4 foot Charbroil Charcoal Offset Smoker for $75.00. I place the Smokin Wedgie in the firebox with NO OTHER fuel source for cold smoking. Right now, I have rubbed chicken and zucchini smoking with Lil' Devil Pellets (Alder, Apple, Hickory, Maple + Hickory Comp Mix. Purchased several 100% pellets from seller, use them for my Traeger Lil' Tex. The Lil' Devil comes in 20lb bag for $5.99 at our local Winco. Inexpensive way to go for cold smoking. I place 1/3 Lil Devil in the Smokin Wedgie, followed by the 100% wood without the Alder. Use the cheaper brand just to get initial smoke going. The Charbroil American Standard Offset Smoker is only 48 inches wide, easy to roll and has an impressive cooking area for cold smoking. At only $75.00 it works perfectly with the Smoking Wedgie. This is my first cold smoke with the Wedgie, first impression after practical application earns this product an A+ for design, features and functions. I ordered a 2nd one for a gift. Inside temp at cooking area has been holding at 104 degrees for 1 1/2 hours straight. Meat is same temp which makes the chicken safe for consumption after smoking for 2 hours, then high heat sear on propane grill. Best smoke is low and slow, keeping inside temp under 150 degrees. Keep meat temps under 110 degrees and they will absorb all the smoke you put into the cooker. Some will absorb in meat up to 140 internal temp. I enjoy pre-smoking for longer times of 2 hours. With this Smokin Wedgie, I can control internal heat with air vents. Keeping internal temp under 110 for a full 2-3 hours on only 2 cups of pellets, very economical and the best smoke taste and rings. Last Fall, I cold smoked several types of beef and pork at same time. Then place in our freezer for 6 months. Took out a pre-smoked Beef Chuck Roast smoked with Mesquite. Thawed and placed in Crock Pot with 1 cup of water. Cooked 3 hours on low, added herbs and veggies for another 6 hours. My wife is not that fond of meat but commented it was the best beef soup she had ever had. With the Smokin Wedgie and a larger cooking area, you can pre-smoke quite the variety and cook some same day but freeze the rest. I am rather new with pellets, etc but will admit I am having a blast. Not sure what the problem is, but I can’t seem to eat this thing to smolder. It’s either fully engulfed and will ruin the paint on your grill or it goes out. I’ve tried multiple approaches as well. Microwaving the pellets to remove potential moisture, moving it around my grill to different locations. Nothing seems to work. Ended up buying a smoke daddy smoke generator. Oh and I was using lumberjack pellets too so I don’t believe it to be a pellet quality issue.

This item really works, and on almost any grill or smoker. I have a pellet grill, and it doesn't put off much smoke because it is built to be efficient. Use this to pre smoke foods before you turn on the heat. I have cold smokes bacon, Canadian style loin bacon, and many other pork and chicken cuts. This device works like a champ. I use a propane torch for a minute or two to get it started and it smokes heavy for at least 2 hours.

Works good. Kinda hard to get started but once it does it starts to smoke, it smokes slowly and then smokes a lot and then goes out after about an hour and a half. Once it gets broken in and exposed to high heat it will warp a little bit but does not affect how it performs.

I have only used this smoker 3 times, each time I get better at it, there is a little learning curve to getting it lit and keeping it lit as well as having adequate ventilation/air flow. I can say that it really helps my Traeger out. I was very dissapointed with the Treager's lack of smoke flavor. The Wedgie makes up the difference. I lite the Wedgie, let my meat smoke 1-2 hours and then start up the Traeger. It gives a nice but not over powering smoke flavor to the meat. I am going to recommend this to my friend who also has a pellet grill!

I recently bought a Smokin Wedgies and a bag of wood pellets to try my hand at smoking meats, etc. Some of the Amazon reviewers have said the cost of the pellets be high (especially in hopper fed grills) but I think I have come up with a way to use get a lot of smoke for your buck. The Wedgie sellers say that a full Wedgie (1 pound of pellets) will provide 2 hours of intense smoke. The pellets I bought were $36 for a 40 pound bag of mixed hickory and fruit woods, 90 cents per pound or filled Wedgie.
Unless I am cooking ribs, a whole chicken or brisket, etc. (long cook items) I need to cold smoke quicker cooking items like burgers, steaks, fish and sausages in order for them to be exposed to the smoke for long enough without being overcooked. After a lot of thought I came up with using the terrific little Weber Smokey Joe portable charcoal kettle (which I happened to have among our camping gear) for cold smoking the food before transferring it for cooking it on the gas grill. My healthier wife is a longtime vegan so I am usually barbecuing for one. The little Smokey Joe seemed perfect for the job and it also provides great control over the air inflow and outflow. And it provides an easy way to smother the remaining smoldering pellets for another smoke. I found a disposable 12 inch aluminum pie plate in my kitchen and attached a makeshift knob to the center of it so that I can easily install it as a lid over the Wedgie in the bottom of the Smokey Joe to kill the fire at the end of smoking. It also fits snuggly against the sides of the round charcoal kettle. It worked perfectly and, I suspect, more efficiently than simply closing the vents on the Smokey Joe (less oxygen to be used up).
I started my first attempt at cold smoking with the Smokin Wedgie filled only about 3/4 full (for some reason). I smoked 1/4 pound homemade burger patties right out of the freezer (letting them thaw while smoking), with baked beans and buttered, seasoned raw onions for 1 3/4 hours and then smothered the fire with the pie plate lid. The next morning I checked it and found it had, no doubt, smothered quickly. I had burned less than 1/3 of the pellets in the Wedgie. AND I OVER-SMOKED the food (particularly, the beans were a little too strongly smoked)! I think I could get away with using pennies worth of pellets for a cold smoke like this one.
FYI— The Smokin Wedgies was installed in the very bottom of the charcoal kettle, under the grill but off center. The weather was hot, in the 90‘s. Next time for this meal I would smoke the beans no more than 30 minutes and the frozen burgers about an hour so they would have time thaw while smoking. For unfrozen burgers and sausages, maybe 30-40 minutes max. At one point I aimed my infrared thermometer at several spots on the grill and it read a little over 100° on the average. However one edge of one of the burgers which sat directly over the smoldering zone was very slightly cooked (part of the onion bowl was too warm to hold a finger on). For a long cook like ribs in a cool zone of a gas grill I could use the Wedgie directly on the gas grill for a long time. ALSO, I reeked of smoke afterward and into the evening. I recommend changing into some kind of a “smoking outfit” before lighting the pellets (at least the shirt anyway). I got blasted with smoke whenever I lifted the Smokey Joe lid. Perhaps turning on a small fan before lifting the lid would direct the smoke away from me. I suspect that the smoke inside the tight little Smokey Joe may be more intense that a larger, more ventilated chamber of a full size grill, perhaps shortening the smoking process in the Smokey Joe.
2ND ATTEMPT—I cold smoked a 1 inch thick top sirloin steak (seasoned with salt and pepper) fresh from the butcher, for 40 minutes using the same batch of leftover pellets from the previous smoke, ash included. Today I checked the Wedgie and found about half of the original load of pellets remaining unburned, after two uses! I love that kind of efficiency! I could get 2 or 3 more cold smokes out of this 70 cent load of pellets. The steak was well smoked and still quite raw (warmed to only 85° during this smoke). I let it sit on the counter for 30 minutes until I was ready to sous vide it in a water bath at 122° for 45 minutes. The 2 hours or so that the beef was unrefrigerated, in the temperature danger zone (between 40° and 140°), is not long enough for spoilage. I believe the criterion for crock pots coming up to temperature is 4 hours max in that zone. Besides, the smoke probably provided a further layer of protection from spoilage. Anyway, I put the steak in the sous vide bag with 1.5 tablespoons butter and 2 teaspoons Frank’s RedHot original sauce. Then I grilled it at very high heat for 8 minutes, turning for crosshatched grill marks every 2 minutes. It was perfectly rare with lovely dark grill marks!
Before investing a thousand bucks into a hopper style pellet grill plus accessories and lots of pellets, not to mention the necessity for continuous electrical power), it may be worth it to first invest 85 bucks or so in something like this to see how you like it. If you are a fan of smoked foods and efficiency, I think this may be all you need, more than you need really. But if not, you can always use the Smokin Wedgies as well as the pellets with your new $800 pellet grill. You may have to eat the $30 Smokey Joe or store it with the camping gear. And then again, if cooking for a family larger than one, you may need a bigger charcoal kettle and pie plate.

Works as advertised and it allowed me to cold smoke a block of cheese perfectly. A tip though is to only light one end with a propane torch for 1 minute; if you light both, it will flare and not smolder properly and will result in too much heat to cold smoke. It will smoke for 4 hours if lit properly.

This item really works, and on almost any grill or smoker. I have a pellet grill, and it doesn't put off much smoke because it is built to be efficient. Use this to pre smoke foods before you turn on the heat. I have cold smokes bacon, Canadian style loin bacon, and many other pork and chicken cuts. This device works like a champ. I use a propane torch for a minute or two to get it started and it smokes heavy for at least 2 hours.

My husband is an avid smoker. That sounds bad.... but he is a smoker and an avid food smoker. haha. Anywho, he watched 100s of youtube videos and he was sold on this. It works so well he got his dad one and a friend that smokes their meat too. That sounds bad too. Just buy it!

It works! It burns and makes good amounts of smoke as you can see from the pictures. I set one hole on fire and got smoke for about 3 1/2ish hours or so. If you do cheese dont put your cheese above the wedge. I was so excited to use it that I wasnt thinking.
