I do know that he had an issue with getting the vacuum suction directly onto the exact spot on the hold in the bag, is very touchy. Got upset different times.

Answer: You keep it on until the bag is sealed. You can tell from the appearance of the bag and the change in the sound when that happens. Doesn't matter if it's on a/c or batteries, its the same for both. I switched from using this to an inexpensive counter top vacuum sealer. Amazon does not sell the brand I bought anymore but similar models are available for under $50. I strongly recommend these as you can buy rolls of both size vacuum bags that you can cut to size and seal both ends with the counter top vacuum sealer. Saves money and are more flexible and powerful.

I had a corded foodsaver handheld that served me for many, many years for canisters that I store spaghetti in and sealing dry goods like rice or beans in canning jars with the jar attachment. They no longer make or sell the model that served my needs so well. I was sealing brown rice in quart jars when it stopped working.
I also have a very old foodsaver vacuum sealer with no bells or whistles that still works for vacuum sealing bagged items. It has a spot to attach a hose, so I ordered a hose attachment, but could not get it to work with the jar adapter. The bare bones machine I have doesn't have controls that would allow me to just vacuum.
When I ordered this device, I thought it might work if I removed the clear cap and just used the small tip with my jar attachment, but I tried that first and it didn't work.
It does work with the clear cap on by centering the nozzle over the top of the jar adapter.
After I sealed the 3 quart jars that remained after my beloved handheld died, I read the instructions.
In the future, I'll be cautious not to run it too long at a time to keep from destroying the internal motor.
I'll keep the thing in place and just use short periods until the vacuum is formed.
I really wish Foodsaver still made and sold the corded handheld that finally died on me because it was absolutely wonderful and served me well for many years. Mine was corded and had a base that the handheld rested in. I'm not a fan of their new handheld devices and wasn't about to purchase an expensive vacuum sealer for the retractable handheld on the new ones. My old bare bones model still works for vacuum sealing bags.

Bought this for our motorhome because I could put it in a drawer. I had previously ordered a battery only model that included the batteries installed, but when I received it, the batteries were corroded and it didn't work and I had to return it. I was happy to find this dual power model that did not come with batteries so there was no chance that it would have corroded batteries. It is a little noisy, but so is the counter model electric sealer that I have. I love that you can use it on their brand of zip lock baggies. Love this small kitchen appliance!

i have this little handheld vacuum sealer sitting on the counter in its stand. When I need it I plug it in, use it, unplug and set back in its stand- DONE. Being someone who refrigerates/freezes meal and smoothie portions, this vac sealer is a huge convenience. I rely on it so much I'd go bankrupt using the battery power option. I've always had larger units in the past and was intrigued by the small storage space this would take up. I received this just before I went on vacation so when I returned and tried to use it, it wouldn't even turn on. Since I was beyond the 30 days, Amazon wanted to charge 25% re-stocking fee. Re-stocking what? It's dead. I had to argue and pointed out it had 90 day coverage, and then the rep finally offered me a replacement w/o a restocking fee. I still had to print, re-pack, and ship the item back.

I tried one of these to keep cold cuts longer 3 years ago. Unfortunately the vacuum seal only lasts two days just as it did on the one I tried years ago. Great idea but seal will not hold and it’s no different then a typical zip lock!

I ordered 2, one worked ok, but the second did not work. I tried them using house current. They come with a 6vdc transformer, but need 9v worth of batteries. The working model does not do well with its 6v transformer (slow, sounds as though it is struggling) believe it would do better with a higher v transformer, so I am going to get one and see if it helps!

This keeps my frozen meats so much fresher than regular freezer bags. It can be a bit tricky to get the bags sealed properly prior to suctioning, but you'll know right away to check and redo the seal when the suction doesn't work right away. It is so powerful that if you keep suctioning too long you'll squeeze the juices out of the meat - don't do that! Bags have proven to be reusable - just hand wash with soapy water and stand upside down and open to drain. The bonus is that reusing bags reduces the plastic in landfills. Double bonus - good for storage, good for environment.

i have this little handheld vacuum sealer sitting on the counter in its stand. When I need it I plug it in, use it, unplug and set back in its stand- DONE. Being someone who refrigerates/freezes meal and smoothie portions, this vac sealer is a huge convenience. I rely on it so much I'd go bankrupt using the battery power option. The AC cord is invaluable.
