Questions about Excalibur D500SHD Electric Food Dehydrator, 5-Tray, Silver (Discontinued
Q:
Is the interior also stainless steel or plastic?
Answer: Plastic Polycarbonate material.
Answer: The inner sidewall channels that the stainless trays slide into, are plastic, but the food does not touch them while they are on the stainless trays. The top inner wall liner inside is plastic, and the bottom inner wall liner is also plastic. The door is all stainless, and does not have a liner. The large inner airflow screen inside the back that protects the heat element, thermostadt, and fan, is metal, and I assume is stainless also.
Answer: Yes, I believe it is stainless steel.

I would love to make fruit strips, my kids love them! It would be fun to make things together in the kitchen
jen gordon : Awesome
I will dehydrate fruit with it and herbs and whatever I can ... this is a great item for healthful eating...
Doug W. : Five Stars
Works great, and it was worth the extra expense to have the assurance of stainless steel trays.
Kimberly : healthy snacks
This looks fabulous! I can't wait to get one, the 1st thing I'd make is sugar-free candied fruit for my kids
myranda : mommypotamus

Would love to make some kale chips and other raw goodies for my family as I'm resolved to becoming vegetarian by year's end.
Penny : Great Company
I bought this item before I realized that getting fresh organic fruits and vegetables would not be easy to get. The company was great to deal with and took it back with a full refund. I will buy from them again and Amazon.

I've been wanting one of these for the past 5 years. Can't wait to start drying herbs, tomatoes and making fruit leathers and energy bars! ~Janet
Pamela Herr : I want this!
I would love to have this well made dehydrator. Now that we moved and can grow more of our own food this would be a great way to preserve it. I am looking to continue making healthy changes to my families life and this would be a wonderful tool to have.
Melissa Kinkle : Mommypotamus
I would love to have this as a staple to my kitchen. I would make dried herbs, fruit jerky, dried fruits, nuts, yogurt drops, beef jerky and more!
Luv2bgreta : Love this

disappointed : What kind of scam is this review process?
I agree completely with the other 1 star. I couldn't find 1 person who has actually used this product and the same people have multiple 5 star votes admitting as much.
Rachel J. Soumokil : Mommypotamus
I will be drying fruit and veggies from our garden to preserve. I'm especially looking forward to drying tomatoes. Mmmm.....so good in all kinds of recipes and no wasted produce.
Luv2bgreta : Love this
I can not wait to make fruit leather with one of these food dehydrators. So excited to try it at home.
Vanessa Urchek : Mommypotamus
I will make dried fruit for my kiddos first!!! I am a speech therapist and I dread giving away candy for motivation, buying dried fruit for 40+ kiddos is killer on the budget! Also many of my special needs kiddos are on very strict diets, so the fruit would be perfect! : )
E. M. Bilek : Versatile and well made
The Excalibur five-tray stainless-steel dehydrator (D500SHD) is excellent. I got it to replace my four-tray Excalibur dehydrator that finally had its heating element fail after nearly 40 years. After that time, and after surviving two overseas moves (during which I operated the dehydrator through a step-down voltage transformer), there were also some cracks appearing in its plastic case and there was a crack in its door. So rather than contacting Excalibur to replace the door and begin troubleshooting the heater by replacing the thermostat, which were parts that they could have sent, I decided to get a new stainless-steel model.
To be clear, the stainless-steel is, apart from the door, stainless panels that are cladding over a plastic box that is BPA-free according to Excalibur’s claims, but I think that the steel will add additional durability to that box. Though I decided to get a new model, Excalibur has appeared to have kept its basic designs and sizes for decades, making parts exchangeable and readily accessible. I appreciate the fact that if a small bit breaks or wears out on one of their dehydrators, that there’s a good chance that it can be repaired.
So far, I am impressed with this new dehydrator. I am happy to see that Excalibur’s quality has not appeared to deteriorate since I got my last Excalibur dehydrator in 1982. Though I was happy with my previous unit, the fan on the new dehydrator seems like it’s more powerful. Thus far I’ve only dried some tomatoes in the new unit, but was pleased at how uniformly the pieces dried. The documentation that came with this dehydrator is much expanded over what I received 40 years ago, and I am looking forward to trying some of the recipes and suggestions in the “Preserve It Naturally” book that came with the new dehydrator.
This new unit feels solid and well made. The five trays that came with the D500SHD dehydrator are 304-grade stainless, according to Excalibur. Neither they nor the stainless panels on the unit’s exterior provide much attraction to a magnet, which is an indication of the metal's quality. Even the machine bolts supplied to attach the door handles are stainless; it’s a nice touch, but if Excalibur puts quality parts into such small things, which most people would not notice and on which they could have saved a few pennies by putting in non-stainless parts, it gives me confidence that the rest of the unit is both as well made and well thought out as it appears. Another indication of its quality is that Excalibur provides a ten-year limited warranty on the dehydrator if it's ordered direct from the factory -- a length far beyond warranties on most consumer products.
As with my previous Excalibur dehydrator, I appreciate the fact that I can operate this unit standing up on its narrow edge. I frequently use it in this position when I make jars of yoghurt. I like the fact that this unit has a timer; but although I can set it for up to 26 hours, I wish that the timer also had an “always-on” setting -- my only criticism with this dehydrator.
I found my previous four-tray model to be big enough for my four-person family (though we did not have a large garden and I never had a large amount of game requiring immediate processing). The new five-tray model is plenty big for my purposes, and I am hopeful that in stainless steel, it will last me at least another 40 years, and if anything does go wrong with it, Excalibur will be around and will have the parts to repair it. I highly recommend Excalibur’s D500SHD five-tray stainless steel dehydrator with no reservations.
MomChef : High quality yummy food!
Wow! Such a nice unit to preserve lots of healthy foods by dehydration. My boys have been begging me to make homemade beef jerkey because they love to camp and love to take jerky on their excursions. So, of course, jerky will be my first thing to dehydrate in this unit! My next thing would be soaked and dehydrated pecans and walnuts because it makes them healthier and oh so yummy!
Nora Ann Allgood : dryer
I find it very noisy. I like that it has a timer. Wish there was a little more room between trays
Sherry M. Hansen : Mommypotamus
If I win this great prize one of the first things I will make are my tasty Spicy Sweet Potato Chips.
These are great for gucamole & salsa.... All things wonderful and nothing bad. :))
me : My own strange review
Every one of these reviews claims to want to use the machine. None actually own it nor have any experience with the machine.
Very strange.

msc2106 : dried out junkie
Yes that's what I wrote. I love anything dehydrated. I think the first thing I would make would be some fruit leather for my boys. My oldest is back to school from winter break this Wednesday and I'm ready to start filling up the lunchbox with Paleo friendly snacks...this sure would make my job a LOT easier. :)
Elizabeth Woodward : Mommypotamus
TURKEY JERKY!! Must have this…husband and I are looking for healthier alternatives and this would be great for dried fruit and such.
Nikki : In it to win it!
If I won this Beauty, the first thing I would make would be dried strawberries! They are quickly becoming my favorite snack, that I would love to make at home!

sassyfrass : Anyone? Anyone at all actually purchase this thing?
Seriously? Like you all said, no one has used it. Looks like same person writing all the five-star reviews.
Wtf?
Happy customer : dehydrator
I really want to save money by dehydrating apples and such for healthy snacks and preserving produce when it comes on sale .

TURKEY JERKY!! Must have this…husband and I are looking for healthier alternatives and this would be great for dried fruit and such.
Julie Johnson : Foods I'd try
I like homemade beef jerky and I would also like to try the tomatoes. Herbs are expensive in the store, I would like to try my hand at drying herbs, too!
An Oregon Customer : Prepping and Saving Money at its Finest
I can't wait to actually own a dehydrator to not only prepare for the unexpected but to have my whole family be healthier. I am a vegetarian and have two children with food allergies so owning this would help us so much. As a single mother I also am very interested in saving all the money that I can by not wasting food!!!
Kindle Customer : I would love to have this!
The first thing I'd make with this is dried apples and pears, followed up with dried bananas the way my grandma used to make them.
SmithFam : Excalibur dehydrators are the best!
I have never owned an Excalibur dehydrator because I have I have a Nesco American Harvester which is a work horse but I cannot do yogurt with it. I have children with a lot of different allergies and I struggle making yogurt! Everyone that I know that has an Excalibur loves them and they can do so many different things! So, the first thing that I would make is yogurt!
me : My own strange review

I'm trying to reduce our weekly grocery bills. Making my own snacks and spices would be an excellent way to do that!
