How easily are treble hooks caught in this net? Is this a fine mesh where hooks tend to get stuck and are a pain to remove?
Answer: You can order the net with different mesh sizes. Mine is a fairly open/traditional mesh. Have had no issues, but I prefer not to use treble hooks, so your milage may vary. Sorry I couldn't give a more direct answer.
Q:
How wide is the metal band that holds the net?
Answer: Frank,
Answer: Not exactly sure what it is that you're asking so I'll answer both of my guesses :

Product reviews of Handy Pak Net - Plastic Handle Vinyl Pouch Made in America
john c mayher : It's good
Had mine for years, love it. Use it river fishing so I don't get my bet caught in the brush. Like mine so much I got this one for a good friend.
Can take a minute to figure out the fold, but once you do its easy.
Doug Lewis : T

Cary : Collapse your net
I tried like everyone else to collapse my net. I followed the diections that came with the net, and watched videos of other people collapsing the net. The problem I had was, after twisting to get the fig8, 1 loop didn't align with the others. I did force the 3rd loop and other 2 aligned loops into the case. It didn't break the spring steel, but it obviously was not right. The directions say "this net is made of genuine spring steel, it cannot be broken or damaged in folding."
I have found if I am holding the handle with one hand, and top of net with other hand, then twist into fig8, but 3rd loop doesn't align, then I grab the net from a different place(like half way between the handle and the top) before twisting into the fig8. Sometimes I have to try grabbing net in several different places(always put hands on opposite sides of net) before twisting into fig8. If all 3 loops line up, you're good. If not, try grabbing net in another place, then twist.
frankfrank : can be really difficult to get this folded at first
I have folded a lot of bandsaw blades and circular hoop types tents and so before I bought this I thought all the complaints about it being hard to fold were just people who didn't get that concept of how to fold a spring loop. That can be hard to learn at first but I thought I would be good since I have done it a lot with other products. Then I got this net in, watched all the videos, and could not get it folded for probably the first 50 tries or so. I'm a handy person so this was very maddening.
I believe the reason that some people have an easy time and others do not is that if you don't get it folded within the first few tries the hoop starts getting the wrong shape and that makes it almost impossible to fold right. So here is my advice: until you get it working right, make sure the hoop is very circular before each attempt to fold it, and watch the video on the manufacturer's site as it is better than the ones I found easily on youtube. Once I got it to fold a few times then it started keeping the right shape and became very easy to do. If I deliberately bent the sides back to be more flat (or worst case a slight kidney shape) the net would never fold right even after I had the technique down.
I could never get it to fold with the foot hold method that you use with a bandsaw blade or tent, so I wouldn't bother with that. I torqued it around pretty good in the wrong ways and it didn't get kinked or develop any shape I couldn't correct back to original, so the steel quality & heat treatment seems good for the application.
I wonder if a thicker hoop would make this easier to fold, as I have never had this much trouble with 3/4" bandsaw blades.

Chris : Great net. Made in the USA!
These nets work wonderfully. Great quality American made product. There is an easily mastered trick to getting it folded back up properly. If you have trouble watch a YouTube video and you'll be good to go.

had one as a kid, now getting back to fishing. This fits in a dry sack that I keep in my trunk with a travel rod and reel set up. Takes up no room and is readily available for netting those soft mouthed trout. The fact they they still make the same net for 50 years tells a lot about the quality and usefulness.
Mike : Never going back
So compact and light
Clay Mulhollem : These nets are excellent. As a backcountry fisherman a net is usually ...
I have teak handled pak net and just ordered the plastic one as a gift. These nets are excellent. As a backcountry fisherman a net is usually a nuisance getting snagged in every bit of brush or laurel near the stream. Not so with this thing!
Yone Akagi : Make the hoop round before you twist!
The reviewer who suggested making the rim as round as possible before creating the figure 8 is absolutely correct. I struggled with this thing and probably tried 75 times to get it right. The problem was that one of the three coils always stuck out like a sore thumb, making it impossible to stack the coils. I struggled with it so much that I thought I had damaged the metal band. But if you make it round before you twist, the coils stack easily. Now it’s actually kind of fun to fold instead of frustrating. I look forward to using this for remote and lightweight backpacking trips for mountain trout. I have not put it through the paces yet, so I’m giving four stars for old school innovation and USA quality.
ED : Just could not Collapse this??!!
My hands must be getting weaker? Had a horrible time trying to collapse the net. Even after watching the video. They make it look simple but not for me. Perhaps for younger and stronger hands. Perhaps they should make one for Seniors? I like the concept! Did not work for me!
Customer : Super compact/convenient, small learning curve, get to be a fishing ninja
Small learning curve when you first get it. Easy once you practice a few times. Love getting to whip it out of the holster like a fishing ninja when trout fishing. Pretty good quality so far with light use but not sure it will last.

RLF : ... had my handy-pak net for 24 years still works like the day it was new
I have had my handy-pak net for 24 years still works like the day it was new. My co-workers wants me to teach his 13 year old son to flyfish so this net will go to my student and I will be getting the teakwood with leather pouch. There is no better net on the market in my opinion. I always feel.like a Samurai when I reach behind me and whip it out....lol. Seriously, o have been fly fishing since I was 8 and watched countless anglers looking like mannequins from a orvis store with big, bulky heavy, wooden monstrosity dangling from their backs with some cumbersome clip or magnetic device, getting caught on the brush...etc, not this 8th wonder of the world. Get it, you'll love it. I want to say it's for ages 9 and up since my 9 year old nephew can fold it but after reading some of these reviews I wonder
michael grosse : product wasn't so hot, but the customer service was stellar
I will attempt a review of the product, but with a caveat. My review is based more the customer service side of the equation. If I were to rate the net upon arrival at my home, it would be a 1 star. There was a minor tear in the netting, and the ability to get the net back in the pouch escapes me. The netting tear, that is on the company and an error on their side. The inability to fold it back correctly, that is on me, or blame it on genes. If the net is to be used primarily for catch and release and I am unable to use it, then the product, through no fault of its own, is a failure for me. I tend to be the kind of person that looks for the most direct solution, so when I called the Handy Pak Net company for resolution, the customer service that they provided me, tells me that this company stands behind their product 100 percent. So regardless of a good review, a bad review, the company stands behind their product, so that is noteworthy, and it seems for the present, rare. To recap, the tear in the net is unacceptable and problematic, but I also understand how it can happen. People make mistakes. The folding of the net, or rather the inability, that is on me. But should you have issues, the company has your back. That speaks volumes about the product. I will likely practice with it and master it. I may still have to go with another net, by another company, but the price point, the good reviews, the company standing behind their product...that means something, or it should.
