Questions about Lazer Ready RIG-18 WITH1-1/2OZ Egg Sinker
Q:
I see some negative reviews which are directly against the primary use of the product. can you comment on them? lead not heavy and unwinding issues.
Answer: We have used ours countless times and I have never had a problem with the lead not being heavy enough and it unwinds nicely. All-in-all I think it has worked really well for us, the only unwinding issue that has ever occurred is when it was wound up improperly and it snagged, but that's user error. Hope that helps!
Answer: I use these in the Keys when I am scouting for Lobsters while snorkeling. I unwind a few feet of cord, drop the lead weight and the float marks the spot for my GPS when back on the boat. I do put them in my swim suit. If you put them in your pocket they will float out. I have had no problems.
Answer: I have had a set of these for about seven or eight years. Now, I only use them for one week per year up in Canada. However, I have not had issues with them unwinding. I think if you wind them too tight when you bring them in there could be an issue with unwinding, but I have not had that problem. This past summer I did loose on of the lead weights as the cord finally gave out (I think the weight got caught between some rocks). Anyway, we tied on some lead fishing weights and were good to go again. I'd buy another pair if I needed more.
Answer: It works well in shallow water. But not in deeper water. Don't use a to heavy weight as you will lose it. The weight sinks too fast and it does not unwind fast enough, and I lost my one. In deeper water it takes too long to unwind , and sometimes gets stuck going down
Answer: We did not have any trouble for our use, which was to mark where we were catching fish on a given outing.
Answer: I personally prefer the H shape over the round or barbell shape. Works better in windy conditions.
Answer: Mine works just fine. I would buy it again.
Answer: I have not had any problems with the four I have, they have performed as they should.
Q:
What are the actual dimensions of the bouy itself?
Answer: 4 3/4" long by 4 1/4" wide x 1 3/8" thick , the only problem I have with these is if you don't whined the line up correctly the next time you toss it in the water it won't unwind making you head back to buoy to fix. Also the line has a tendency to knot up and twist.
Answer: There are two buoys in the pack. Each buoy is approximately 4 1/8" X 4 3/4" X 1 3/8".
Q:
Is the weight made out of lead?
Answer: Mine purchased in June 2014 do have lead weights.
Answer: Yes it is. You might want to adjust it a bit so that it unwinds faster. Before you use it test it in shallow water. Otherwise you might loose it if your weight is too much.
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
I have a question. Why are they 3 times more expensive than Academy? $5.99
Q:
I understand 75 feet; what does 6 ounces refer to? Is this strong enough line to use on a lure retriever?
Answer: 6 ounces=the weight of the piece of lead attached to the line. this line is strong enough for a lure retriever.
Answer: 6 oz refers to the flexable lead weight on the end of the line. This is what forced the line to unwind when you toss it in (and anchor the float). The line is pretty strong . Strong enough for use on a lure retriever would be (possible but) subjective. OF course, you could replace the line with whatever you want.
Q:
Would it work in the ocean witch the waves?
Answer: We live on a lake and use them here. They are not large and I do not think they would work well at all in ocean waves. Buoys for ocean use are sold, though.
Answer: Chad, I have only ever used them in lakes so can't speak from experience about how they would go in the ocean. I'm not sure how long the line is as I usually fish in water from 15 to 40 feet deep. However, in deep ocean water in a heavy swell I doubt there would be enough line to to reach the bottom or that the lead would be heavy enough to hold the bottom (if it got that far). You probably need something bigger with a lot more line and lead for use in the open sea. Hope this helps.
Answer: Yes, we have large waves on Lake Michigan also
Answer: That depends entirely on the wave height , current and how much line you pay out. The lead isn't that heavy so it has potential to get dragged if it's rough (just like a fishing sinker that is too light.)
Q:
what is the tensile strength of the cord?
Answer: Replace the cord is the first thing to do with these. Get some braided line to replace the existing.
Q:
whats going on with your prices??????????out of line on lots of items that i look at....
Product reviews of Lazer Ready RIG-18 WITH1-1/2OZ Egg Sinker
Amazon Customer : Not enough lead
I have been using these marker buoys for years and have been very happy with them - never had any issue. However I had reached the stage where I only had two of my original batch left and needed some more. The first time I fished with the new ones I threw one overboard to mark the position of a school of Bass. To make a long story short, it took me a while to realise that buoy was floating away from my boat. When you throw these things overboard the lead is supposed to drop to the bottom of the lake and anchor the buoy in place. I picked up the buoy to find that the lead weight was hanging only a couple of feet below the water line, meaning the buoy was not anchored just floating freely.- the string had not unwound My first impression was that the string had been wound on too tightly with the coils getting caught under each other so I unwound one and rewound it loosely - tossed it overboard and it still didn't unwind. I then compared my new buoys with one of the old ones - the old ones have significantly more lead on the end of the string. The new ones don't have enough lead to rotate the buoy in the surface tension of the water so they just float away from the spot they are supposed to be marking. The simple fix is to add a ball sinker onto the string above the flat lead. Very annoying but easily fixed.
Dale Sevrey : NOT functional
When you throw one of these markers into the water the weight doesn't pull out the cord so it just sits there and floats away.......the round ones work perfect......these suck
Customer : These are legit for marking fish & structure.
These are legit. As opposed to the rounded dumbbell-shaped bouys which would simply unravel forever. Don't want the rounded cumbell-shaped buoys that continue to unwrap after they float to the surface. Get these flat ones. Need to ad more weight onto these or any buoys, otherwise expect the wind to move the float. To make them stay put, cut the weight off another bouy (sacrificing it) & tie the 2nd weight onto the buoy you intend to use. That means you'll have to buy twice as many buoys as you need, but I do it.

Ladyface729 : Awesome!
No issues here. These work really well and hold up even when the water is a bit choppy. Caught quite a bit of fish thanks to these markers.

Great purchase.
RR : Excellent addition to the tackle box
Excellent addition to the tackle box! Works perfectly. Self deploys and stays on the spot. Does not move with wind or waves.
mike daigle : Effective marker
works fine. I carry at least one when I dive, which is weekly. simple and easy to use. I like it. price is right too.
Greg : To start, two buoys come in the package. ...
To start, two buoys come in the package. They are well constructed and they are designed so that they auto deploy. Once you separate the weight from the buoys core, just throw it in the water and it unfurls itself. I've had mine for a year, I use them frequently and they've held up well.

perfect! works like it should!
Jesse Burgess : Great in the wind.
Works great in windy conditions. Stays right where you want it to! Simply and efficient design.
BT : Great buoy.
Works great, and there are two (2) buoys in the package. Depending on the bottom you are marking, be careful if you are marking a reef. We left a buoy on a reef and the coral cut the line and we lost the weight.

Thomas W Powell : Good stuff
Great product and good quality
Dan Checkoway : Not enough lead
As another reviewer noted, the weight isn't heavy enough. Here's the best I can explain it...since the string is relatively evenly wound, as it unwinds, the string moves side to side. As it goes all the way to one side, it pulls that side of the buoy down and the string "binds" on the inner face of the buoy. That friction, combined with not enough lead, is enough to stop it from unwinding further. And off floats your marker. I'll be sitting over 40-50' of water, and the thing only unwinds 6 or 7 times, so it's pretty obvious & I can pick up on it. But it's annoying. I'm going to try adding lead & see if it's enough to keep the sucker unwinding.

bryan burks : must have for crappie

comes in a 2 pack, a must have for any fishing boat
charlie : Works but needs more weight.
Used these several times.. The only problem I had was some times the weight did not deploy the marker all the way to the bottom because of the winding of the line. I added more weight to the existing weight and it works great. Manufactures could add a little more weight and I would give it a 5.

Amazon Customer : Perfect!!
X marks the spot! Mark your fishing spot so you can anchor up away from the fish and cast to them. Also perfect to throw out and mark the spot if anything (rod, keys etc) falls off the boat!
