I used to use a rope stringer, threading the rope through the mouth and gills of the fish. After several hours, the fish were dead, and sometimes by the time I got back to the dock, they were stiff! So I invested in a basket holder from Eagle Claw. Tied by a rope to the metal handle and draped over the side of the boat, fish swim inside the basket, and for the most part arrive back at port alive and flipping. I have used this for panfish, bass, walleye, even an occasional northern pike. The wire is tough and will not break unless one loads the basket with too many fish - then the wire may bend, and if old (many many seasons), may acually break. I always clip the bottom spring-loaded basket door shut to prevent inadvertent fish escape. The top basket spring door will open with the weight of most fish, and close again one the fish is through. They make some models with a clamp device that secures the basket to the boat, but I prefer this kind, as I can use a rope to place the top of the basket exactly where I want it. My rope stringers are a thing of the past now that I have my two baskets. My baskets have lasted over 10 years each.
