Questions about Frabill Folding Landing Net, 22 x 20-Inch, Premium Landing Net
Q:
Can this also be used to catch butterflies?
Answer: Absolutely!! However I use it primarily for noseeums at the beach. My son uses the same net for catching big boar ????. So as u see it’s very versatile! ????????
Answer: Here is an explanation of how you can make your own butterfly net: http://www.skiptomylou.org/2010/06/19/homemade-butterfly-net-from-little-birdie-secrets/
Answer: The net is made for fish, not butterflies with fragile wings.
Q:
Good for crawfish netting?
Answer: I don't know about crawfish netting. I use it when rescuing injured wildlife and it works great for that. It's strong enough to hold a full grown canadian goose.
Answer: The mesh is small enough and I found the net to be durable.
Answer: Only if you're gentle! My 5 year old broke it within three days of catching minnows in the lake.
Answer: I've never used it for that, but I think it would work fine.
Q:
Does this net float in the water??
Answer: All you need to do is buy a short piece of closed cell pipe insulation or a pool noodle. cut it roughly square with a razor knife -slightly oversized- and fill a few feet of the part of the handle that does not telescope then Bob's your uncle. Make sure it is closed cell foam.

Answer: I did not have any apportunity to check it was broken at first day of using
Answer: NOPE
Q:
whats the weight capacity of this net
Q:
Is the handle replaceable with a standard "painters pole" screw in?
Answer: No, but the existing telescoping handle is adequate. I don't know why you would want to modify it. I have used my net on two fly fishing trips and have landed trout up to twenty inches with no problems.
Answer: No, it is not.
Answer: no
Q:
The mechanism the locks the net in the open position has broken on ours, can I order the replacement part for it?
Answer: Don't know haven't had that issue yet,
Answer: I could not find replacement parts. I just bought a new net. But take note how it broke. It is definitely designed to be stronger one direction. Broke mine by lending to a guy who used it the wrong way and snapped it. But he landed the fish so I told him “No Worries”
Answer: Your better off extending to your desired position and crimping the metal.
Answer: I think not. It is made of poor quality. I purchased a superior replacement, entirely.
Q:
what is the weight limit for this net?
Answer: Not sure on what manufacturer specs are but I used the net and held up to 10 pounds with no problems .
Answer: I've landed a four pound rainbow without a problem
Answer: proven at 5.5 lbs
Q:
how long does it go fully extended
Answer: With the net open to first position, it is 3'4". Fully extended, it is 4'10". The net, at its widest point, is 17". The depth of the net is about the same. I have found this net to be perfect for my needs. it is light, collapsible, locks with ease, and has handled plenty of bass with no issues. I hope this helps. Chad McMillan
Answer: 56" from end of handle to end if net
Answer: bout 4 feet, and is perfect for catching chickens........I bought it for that use, and it is outstanding.
Answer: 5-6ft honesty it's a good net for bass, blue Gill, perch, even walleye. But for anything bigger get a different net.
Answer: Like 4 feet., close to five from stem to stern.
Answer: Approx four feet
Q:
Could this be used to trap a feral kitten?
Answer: Yes, if you're fast enough.
Answer: Sure
Q:
How many pounds is this net rated for?
Answer: I do not know that answer. The net was cheaply made and fell apart almost immediately.
Answer: I think it's sturdy enough for 10 lbs. That's a good size fish, but length is more of a concern as the net is only so wide
Answer: I am not sure. However, I use it for small Goldfish in a little backyard pond and for cleaning leaves. I am very pleased with the results and 5 pounds seems reasonable. More than 5 would be iffy, in my estimation.
Answer: I live in south texas and use it for nice red fish and trout, flounder and Black Drum. hope that helps.
Q:
Has anyone used this to catch smelt (like dip netting for them from the shore) with good results?
Answer: I haven't used this net for that purpose, but in my opinion, the net would be too flimsy. At least for a full net full of smelt. More scoops with only half a net full would be the way to try.
Q:
What are the dimensions of the net?
Answer: im not sure i do know i love mine no more chasing birds down ..love mine..
Q:
Has anyone found a replacement net that will fit? I ripped mine.
Q:
would this be a good net to catch small minos or little bait fish?
Answer: Quite possibly, it has a fine mesh, about 1/4 inch holes....hope this helps
Answer: Yes, but be gentle. My 4 yr old was able to bed the pole trying to scoop up minows.
Q:
Can this net be used for flounder up to 8 lbs?
Answer: I bought mine for Trout in the lake and it works perfect but I think 8 pound Flounder is over doing it for this net. I'd want something a bit sturdier if your looking for a folding design.
Answer: Owned for short amount of time. I'm sure it will land fish but know that due to its ability to fold, the frame itself is not 1 solid piece. I'd recommend EGO S1 Genesis. Strong frame, floats, and has rubber netting.
Answer: Absolutely not. It is of poor quality in every and any way possible.
Answer: I don't think it is big enough
Answer: Absolutely. It's well made.
Q:
What's the biggest fish that can fit?
Answer: Hard to say. I would use it for panfish or nothing longer than 25". I used it on a Boundary Waters trip and was able to get 20"+ pike in there, but one was about 25" and the net was starting to bend.
Answer: Very large. Several feet. It is a big, deep net. I caught a 22" snook that looked small in the net.
Answer: By weight or size? I have netted a 4 1/2 lb rainbow with no problem.
Product reviews of Frabill Folding Landing Net, 22 x 20-Inch, Premium Landing Net
Brandon : Cheaper at walmart
I like how compact the net is and plan on using on my kayak. Only negative is after purchase i saw the same net with slightly smaller opening for $12 dollars at walmart..
Amazon Customer : Five Stars
Strong steel telescopic and expandable net. The fish practically fight to jump in it.
vern martin. : The fish won't know what hit-um
We fly out to a trophy lake every year for 10 days of hard fishing. We've never had a net that did all we wanted. You only have so much room on the bush plane for gear and the guys. Every inch and pound is use none goes to waste. And that's kinda funny because we fly an Otter and it can carry a 2100 lbs, We max it out every time. So little things like a good net needs to be compact and sturdy to just handle the trip not to mention the 20 to 30 inch cutthroat trout we catch. Great product.
SuzyQ : Wonderful for songbird rehabbers
This new is great. Portable, and works great to corral a wayward songbird when they get loose! I'm a songbird rehabber, and I really needed this. Well made, and really nice that the edge is there. Works good for netting a bird near a wall.
Cody : cheaply made
The leaver to extend the handle broke the first time i used it. Not meant to last. The netting isn't rubber coated so hooks stick in it and wont come out. Would be nice if it had a belt clip also, wouldn't recommend this net.
Freda Hackney : Neat Net
I was skeptical, usually anything that collapses is not that stable. However, I love this net. It unfolds and folds back up in a snap, feels very stable and srong. Hope to try it on the lake this weekend. Maybe having a bigger net will get me bigger fish...LOL!
Suzan A. Thompson : Broke on second Catch
A five pound carp broke the net in two! I would not recommended for any fish larger then 2 lbs
Sam M. : Swing And A Miss Frabill..
I bought this at the last minute before heading to Canada for a fly in trip, used for one day and gave up. Landed many 18-24" walleye with it and spent the next two to three minutes trying to get the hook out of the mesh net. While landing the fish, the handle bowed like crazy once lifted out of the water. Also, make darn sure you close it the right way, or you'll blow a good 10 minutes and dull your knife trying to get it to release and fold back together. If it had a rubberized net, I'd say 3 stars, but for a Frabill, this was a swing and a miss. I left it at the camp for the next group to use as a spare.
smtireman : well built, high quality net
used this on our last fishing trip to land trout. worked great, easy to set up and to collapse. the extendable handle is easy to set up, you flip a latch and extend. it's a little short in the handle for where we fish so we ordered the longer handled, larger net version.
Tim Case : Great!
Nice net for smaller fish.
Chris M. : This net is very hard to work with. I ...
This net is very hard to work with. I do alot of trout fishing in northwest colorado. Once you have your fish in the net and the fish flounders around in the net you can plan on putting new tacke on your line. Because it will be impossibly to get your line out of the net it will get hooked up on the rubber net. FYI I will be going back to the nylon net.
Erick N. Horrmann : Great Net!
Great net! I landed a 20 lbs salmon on this net. It's NOT designed for this type of fishing, but it CAN (with the correct usage) be used for this. IF you do, don't telescope it, and make sure you use both hands (one on the handle and one on the net). It collapses GREAT and that was the main feature I was excited about when I purcahsed this. I am a NUT when it comes to making things more portable and more compact but still functional. This fits the bill if that's what you're looking for!!
R.W.B : Pretty cool
My son loves this net. It is perfect for creek wading, catching minnow. He is able to catch more with this, then a rounded net. The versaltility is the only thind that scares me, time will tell.
Brent : Returned for refund
Unfortunately the net was broken when I received it and returned and did not want a replacement. I thought the quality of the net very poor.
bob : ... the boat in a storage compartment and it was perfect for that but the second time I used it ...
I bought this net in February mainly to have a foldable net to keep on the boat in a storage compartment and it was perfect for that but the second time I used it on a 7lb redfish, it broke. The front part of the net is a plastic piece that broke in 3 pieces and the tabs near the handle that clip in to make it secure also broke. I would like to return it but not sure if that's possible because of the time lapse since I bought it.

I received the net on time as promised. Fishing was good and it performed well while netting my limit of good sized rainbows up to 20 inches.

Amazon Customer : chicken catcher
I use it to catch my chickens and bunnies. It works fantastic and saves my back.
webarranch : It works perfectly and is easy to store
We fish a river that is "Catch & Release" from a drift boat. It works perfectly and is easy to store.
Ed Terczak : Frabill Net does not meet expectations
I was very disappointed with the quality and fragility of this net. It has rubber hinges where the net meets the handle that are weak and cannot support anything over 3 lbs.
Amazon Customer : It's ok, just use it correctly
a bit flimsier than I like but if you use it correctly, that is scoop the fish and lift with the handle straight up it should last. It's plenty big enough for even a decent sized carp or small stripers, something I catch regularly on the river.

SEEMS TO BE WELL MADE! Yet to try it, but seems like it will work well!

Valoree : Meh....
A wee bit flimsy for a Frabil. I get that its folding....but cots fold too and are sturdy for a man's weight. Not sure your "big catch" wouldnt be "the one that got away" with this thing...but havent used enough to say for sure yet.
JG : good to have one.
have used this few times, the quality seems to be good, it is all plastic though. the extended handle is about 3 to 4 feet, i wish it can be a little longer.
c.aldrich : Great net that breaks down for storage
Great net to always have stored on your boat. Only complaint is that in one direction lifting a large fish can snap off the tabs that hold it out straight. So then it only works in one direction. However the large cobia didn’t get away and I happily bought another one to always keep on the boat.
ernie : Four Stars
good for storage
ronnie murphy : best ever
I like that it folds up , and can be but in a back pack, good construction, strong netting, and a name you can trust.
Amazon Customer : chicken catcher
I use it to catch my chickens and bunnies. It works fantastic and saves my back.
smtireman : 2nd frabill, this is the larger net with a longer extendable handle
we fish a location that needs a longer handle than the smaller 18" net. this is a larger version with a larger net area and longer extendable handle. the netting is fine to protect the fish incase your doing c&r.
Pastaboy : pastaboy
I like the saved space that a folding net has to offer and it is light and easy to use. I have caught some big bass (16" to 20+") and some nice pike (22" to 28") and the net did just fine. The main concern would be if you caught anything of considerable size (30" and up) I would worry about the net (handle) being able to handle the weight of a "big" fish. I would still suggest to try this product for yourself and you be the judge. I like this net so far and would still tell other fisherman to try it!
david hayter : Great
I like this net a lot. Not much to say about it in terms of use, it does what it was meant to do. The only reason why it gets 4 stars is because it feels kinda flimsy. How it folds together, with a plastic break at the tip of the net so it can collapse, feels like the weakest part. But just being able to throw it into a backpack with only the handle sticking out is amazing enough in itself. Also, the plastic flip on the handle that (i assume) is suppose to hold the extendable hand in place, doesnt do its job at all. Im still able to push the telescoping handle into itself with ease even though the lever is flipped down. Maybe others wont have this problem, i dont know, i dont care either.
Bobk : Great Net
This net is perfect for float tube fishing. It's lightweight and compact and extends for easy fish netting.
Doulos : Great Net
No Complaints. Collapsible, works great for dip netting minnows/baitfish. This is my second net, and would buy another one just like it if I need to again

Dave Y? : Plastic snapped landing a large fish - watch for weight capacity
Maybe I missed the weight limit for this product, but it's only good for smaller fish. While landing a 37" northern pike, the plastic neck snapped. Got the fish in the boat, but was without a functional net the rest of the trip. Worked fine in the smaller fish and stores compactly.
mike gabriel : Three Stars
Great idea but plastic broke first time I used it
Shawn Johnson : Five Stars
Handy net for canoe fishing.... lost my first one and picked up another.

Handy net for canoe fishing.... lost my first one and picked up another.
ThugFishin : This will work good for when I'm "Big Fishing" (Salmon
When ordering, CHECK THE NET SIZE! It's my fault, but I ordered one that was too large. This will work good for when I'm "Big Fishing" (Salmon, Muskie, etc.), but I bought this for Bass fishing specifically and to stow in my bag. It fits, but is cumbersome in my current tackle backpack. :(
Charles : A nice addition to my fishing kayak
A nice addition to my fishing kayak. Net tucks away nicely and is plenty sturdy for retrieving fish. It also extends far enough to be very useful on a power boat.
SC : Folds up neatly, space saving
I really like this product because it folds up to such a small package. I have a 17' speed boat and storage is an issue, the frame of the net folds back upon the shaft which has an elastic strap to hold the net in place for storage. This fits nicely in the side compartment of my boat. I am not a serious fisherman, but just fish for fun, and this product works perfect for me. It seems to be sturdy enough to last for years of use. I would definitely recommend this product to others.
Lerpal : nice for catching birds
We bought this to snare our show pigeons out in the loft. Works great, folds up for storage. A little bigger than we needed, but it still works fine.
Allesandro Velucci : Appears Adequate
While I have not had the opportunity to use it yet, it appears that it will serve the purpose for which it is intended.
Chris J. : This Frabill is a great net!
This Frabill is a great net!!! It's my third net of this type. The first one was the smaller foldable type that I gave away to my bass fishing buddy, when I ordered this larger 22x20 net. The bass guy loved the smaller net because it folded up real nice and compact for his smaller 18ft Bass Boat. The second larger net I tripped over it after landing a fish in my boat and broke it! It wasn't the nets fault. I also have a 18 foot fishing boat as well as Kayaks, and I prefer the larger opening of this 22"x20" net for both fishing craft. Yep, even for my Kayak this net folds and stows excellent!!! It's nice to have the extra reach and dimensions of the net itself encase you happen to hook into a larger fish. You wont be sorry! The construction and materials of the net, Aluminum handles, plastic fittings at hoop, and mesh net was fine. If I were to trip over this net like the clumsy person I was, and break this one again, I would still order another one. It wasn't the construction of this net that caused it to break, I mean I tripped over this net real hard, causing me to go flying! It's a great folding net!!!
Andy : and I wanted it telescoping so it could easily be stored
I would not buy this net if you plan to go fishing with it. I originally bought this because I wanted a longer net to use on steep embankments, and I wanted it telescoping so it could easily be stored.
It is a nice length, and it folds nicely. This is the end of the good qualities.
[...]
It is terrible to actually use fishing. I have yet to use it and NOT end up with a tangled mess when landing a fish. This thing is like a magnet for hooks; if your hook even accidentally brushes it, it will certainly be caught in the mesh. It takes at least 5 minutes to remove a regular shank hook. If it's a small treble hook, forget fishing for the next 25 minutes unless you're willing to cut it out the net. This is a real damper on fishing.
My dad and I have lost more than a few trout already this season because of the tangles. We weren't expecting to waste so much time between catches removing tangles. When I landed a trout a week ago, I got my treble hook stuck in the net (I remove the hook while the fish is still in the net as holding a trout too long will surely kill it.) As I was messing with the tangle, my dad caught a trout, bu I couldn't untangle the net in time to get it landed, and he lost the fish. This has happened to us multiple times, and we've only fished 5 times this season.
Also, if you have a chain link stringer, forget using it with this net. Again, I usually try to put a trout on a stringer while it's netted because I don't want to kill the fish until I'm ready to clean it. The holes in the mesh love to slip around the small openings in the chain links. Just as you get one chain free from the 5 or so mesh holes, you've probably attached 3 more links.
It's a real pain to work with. Also, I fished next to a guy with this same net. He had the same problems, but even worse, his net was almost unusable. The net head is able to fold down for storage by utilizing a plastic clip. Apparently, this plastic clip cannot handle too much stress, as it snapped withing its suggested weight limit. This means that the net will no longer sit straight with the pole as seen in the picture; the guy had to use the net like a ladle.
Save your money and don't buy this.
