Questions about Frabill Tangle-Free Wading Net | Specially Designed for Fly-Fishing | Available in Multiple Hoop Sizes and Net Depths
Q:
Using for large and small bass what size to get
Answer: If you get into 10+ pounders then the 13” X 18” is a good size. The 11” X 15” will get the job done on most of the 3-7 pounders. Good luck!
Answer: I have both. There isn't a huge difference in size. I generally like the larger one where bigger bass are around. Nice net!
Answer: the 17 x 22 is a good size net to handle large and smaller bass. It has served well as my Lake Erie Steelhead net also.
Answer: Get the smaller one, plenty large for any freshwater fish
Answer: I would look at 19"X25". You never know the big one will hit'
Q:
Is the netting made of rubber?
Answer: It seems that it's coated in rubber so it doesn't get tangled. It's a very nice net.
Answer: No it's not made of rubber, it's a really nice net.
Answer: The netting looks like a traditional fabric material (not sure whether natural or synthetic) that has been coated in a flexible synthetic coating that has the consistency of soft rubber. I like the performance of this material, as it doesn't end up getting caught in branches and underbrush so easily when I am exploring banks around lakes and streams. I haven't seen any problems for the fish I land, as they are always in good shape when I release them.
Answer: Yes. Its like traditional netting covered witj rubber
Answer: Yes

Answer: its not one you would want on your back. I bought it for my float tube.
Answer: It is 23" x 12"
Q:
How heavy is the net?
Answer: This is a very light weight net. This net is very solidly built. I will never go back to a wooden handle net again after I broken my Orvis $100 net.
Answer: Not heavy at all. I can’t weight it because I’d lost it about year ago.
Q:
How long is the handle of this net?
Answer: Mine measures 7”.
Q:
Does it sink or float?

Q:
Would this be good for a motor boat fisherman catching 5"-15" fish to use one-handed?
Answer: It would depend on the size of your boat and how deep your hull is. Its perfect for a kayak or small jon boat. As for the size of the fish, its a fine rubber coated nylon mesh that would be perfect for fish 5"-15". I use mine for river trout And it does just fine. It's about the same size as a racketball racket. 24" long with and 8" handle.
Answer: I would say yes. rod in one hand and net in the other for easy landing of fish.
Answer: I would be confident saying this net is pretty multi purpose. I personally use this net for my Kayak. It's netted a few Pike as well as Bass and Walleys... Enjoy!
Answer: I use mine in my 12' semi v and it works great.
Answer: I believe so. It's has a large net and opening. It feels very durable. I haven't used mine much yet but I do like it.
Q:
does it float?
Answer: No. It sinks very slowly, but does not float. I use it wading in the surf while fishing for salmon and steelhead along Lake Michigan or Superior. I keep it attached to my fishing vest with a magnetic clip. Excellent net. I have the net in two sizes for different conditions.
Answer: It does not float. It does come with a bungee type cord attached with a spring clip. I lost a fishing rod out on my kayak last year. Purchased a pack of foam rod floats to avoid repeating. You could use something like on the post to make it float
Answer: Tried mine out in watering tub. Net and hoop end will sink. Handle end floats slightly. Pretty sure that hoop end will rule in the end. Don't know if hoop tubing is sealed to trap air or not but bubbles came from end of handle while submerged. Will try real test in river this week if I get out.
Answer: no it doesn't
Answer: Sorry, have tested it - but by the looks of it I think the hoop is hollow so it should. I can tell you that it is light and works well.
Answer: Nope.
Answer: Nope.

Q:
hoop size only is???
Q:
If you have a food scale or small accurate one, could you please weigh this net?
Q:
does anyone know how much this weighs by any chance?
Answer: I don't have a scale that goes that low but I'd guess maybe 12 ounces.
Q:
the mesh is made of rubber? i don't want a nylon or fabric net
Answer: It is coated in rubber, they are good nets just make sure you are getting the size you want
Q:
What size is the net?
Answer: It is big, but somehow doesn't get in the way. From the tip of the handle to the end it is 29". It measures 18" across at the widest point. I have netted several 20+ fish no problem.
Answer: Net area on mine is 22" long, 17" wide, and about 14" deep -- if this is still the same net I bought a few years ago. Frabill lists the specs as 22 / 17 / 13 (http://www.frabill.com/nets-accessories/trout-nets/3673.html). Not sure why the Amazon page has them at 22 / 17 / 9, unless they've made it shallower. Contact Frabill...
Answer: 17.5" width by 22" length. Absolute perfect size
Answer: 21" X 17"...I love this net!
Answer: 17" W X 22" L X 8" D
Q:
How is the cord attached to the handle? I would like to replace it with my own retractor. Is there an "eye" or something I could clip the retractor to
Answer: The doubled bungee cord goes through a hole in a plug that goes into the handle. The plug stays in the handle via a friction fit. It's easy enough to pry the plug out to replace the cord. (I did it to mine.)You should have no problem adding your own small eye or loop in place of the cord.
Answer: David,
Answer: I attach mine where the handle meets the net on my magnetic net release on the back of my waders. I've noticed if you're hanging it off your back and you go from the base of the handle you will trip over the net and it will get hung up alot.
Product reviews of Frabill Tangle-Free Wading Net | Specially Designed for Fly-Fishing | Available in Multiple Hoop Sizes and Net Depths
Mary Allen : Best Wading Net Yet
If your even thinking about getting this net, go for it. I fished with it a couple times before reviewing it and I can honestly say its the best net I've ever used. Its perfect size for wade, canoe, or kayak fishing whether I'm fishing backwoods blue lines or swift mountain rivers in East TN or Western NC. I liked the clip it has on the end of the stretchy strap so you can loop it on and off your boat quickly. I landed some 20"+, 2-3#'s in it and it handled them with ease. Even though the mouth is only slightly larger than my old teardrop net, it has a ton more room. The flat bottom and the snagless material make catch and release a breeze. No more bird's nest with hooks when those big boys do alligator rolls in your net. I was pleasantly surprised at how well the flat bottom helped trout stay right side up in the water in it while we waited on my fishing mate to "get the camera!" :) The trout aren't doing headstands as they do in a teardrop style net. Also the material is characteristically anti-microbial. The quality is very good for this price and Amazon had the best price. This net is great value.
Pappatoad : Realy great net
Great net for larger rivers ,when I wade & don't want to handle the fish, great all around net for the price, not to small & not to big.
timothy.p.marchant : great economical net
Light weight net with comfortable grip. Had no problem getting hook out of net after fish threw it. Most nets with small holes have this problem but the rubber like coating on net prevented that
Dan LaVache : Failed at the end of it's first season
Started out great. Landed numerous Trout in my kayak with this. However, at the end of the first season with it, it failed on me. The mesh gave way and I lost a fish right through it.
looking for something sturdier now.
thomas r. phipps : Way big
Ended up to big for wadding
Jim : Nice net overall
My biggest complaint is that these nets (the Frabill brand) seem to come with only an elastic cord and clip at the end; why not add a stainless screw eye right up against the handle as well? No easy way to use this with a net retractor, unless you go out and buy a SS eye to add to the handle -- like I did. Why not just add that inexpensive part to all nets? My last Frabill net also has a few holes in the netting, after very light use. Maybe it rotted out, maybe due to snags, maybe both .. in any event, I'd want the net to last for more than a couple seasons, especially since it's rubber- or PVC-coated. I gave it a 4 overall -- love the weight & design, wish there was a handle eye, and the netting doesn't seem very robust
A. Kuhre : Superbly designed kayak fish net!
Net has a large opening, comfortable and sturdy handle and deep netting. Easily handle fish up to 28” in length or up to 10+ pounds. No problem using in the salt as there are no metal parts, except for an easily removal retaining clip attached to some bungee cord.
Belinda : My kids like to try and catch minnows while they are wading
We got this net for our annual vacation to the beach. My kids like to try and catch minnows while they are wading. The net is very nice and not too heavy. Worked great.
Alex Lornie : Bigger than I expected, but an excellent net
We upgraded from the thin plastic net which damages fish to this one. It is a bit big for walk-in fishing, but we use it out of a canoe and it handles any size trout with ease. The construction is durable, light, and ergonomic. This is a great deal, even though it lacks the aesthetics of the wooden-handled nets.
PROS: Price, large size, good quality, light weight
CONS: Aesthetics
I'm glad we bought it.
Addison : Great trout net!
This is a great net for the price! Very good quality! I wish they made one about 25% smaller for a little bit less. I really don't expect to need a trout net this large in the area I live in.
Mumu : Good sturdy net
Used for trout fishing. Worked well. Sturdy and durable. Smaller holes.
jparti : Arrived on time. Looks great.
This net looks great, it feels like rubber. The little logo tags were not on where they should be, they were stuck to the bag so I krazy glued them back on. Lol otherwise this net looks high quality.
Zach : Five Stars
Great net, I fly fish and use this net, it is tangle free and strong as well as light.
PT : Frabil Trout Net - Pleased with Construction.
Very well made with a deep basket makes landing and releasing fish a breeze. Like the tangle free micro mesh. Larger than your Grandpa's trout net, but better for the fish. Great price when compared to nets at local sporting goods store. With Prime Shipping, Amazon is so convenient for getting last minute fishing gear.
Afton Bonin : Net was so awesome somebody stole it from me.
Big net perfect for great lake steelhead fishing
Derek E : Nice net.
This net is nice and lightweight. Nets Steelhead just fine. I got the magnetic net release for it and it fits nice on the back.
Deborah : Great net!
Loved this net, loads of room without the bulk of the 17" x 22" (which I now own because I lost the one this size).
Wille : Great product large catch area and study plastic construction
Holiday gift for my son. Great product large catch area and study plastic construction.
JaimeAstin : A great net for kayak fishing...
I love to fish out of my Kayak and after losing one cheap fold up net to the muddy depths and then losing big fish because I could not land them without a net, I bought this one... Too bad the day the net came in I lost a big catfish that required a net...
I keep the net latched to the kayak. It is durable and the rubber-like coated net is safe for fish (catch and release) as well as tangle free. The net does not float, but the cord and latch is durable and will not easily break. The net is great for any fish.
Fishing out of a kayak is fun, but can be frustrating without the right gear. Most of us learn the hard way to pack light bringing not only whats needed, but what works the very best. This net is a keeper for sure. For such a small space on my 12ft kayak, the net is easy to store, get and use with out worrying with tangles or hurting the fish. Great value for a long lasting product.
Nathan Weber : Steelhead beware!
Love this net! Does the job even on the big ones
progress. : I absolutely love this net
I absolutely love this net. I have caught countless bass and trout with this, and there have been no problems for me at all. I have also gotten my hooks stuck in the net before, and I have not been too gentle with it, and I don't have even the tiniest rip. It is flawless for me, doing shore fishing. it is also super lightweight which makes it much easier to manuever with.
Amazon Customer : Tested and Approved
I purchased this net for wading for sockeye in Alaska. It did it’s job many many times. I paired the net with a magnetic net release. I chose to hook the magnet to the top of the hoop allowing the handle to touch the water instead of the net. Less drag, less snags and all you do is reach behind your back, grab the handle, give it a tug and your net is ready for action. No flipping the net to find the handle. The net is rubberized so it’s very easy to get hooks out and it’s very gentle on fish. Having said that, the net opening size and the rubber will slow down your netting speed. That is to say, how quickly you can scoop a fish out of the water. On a couple of occasions I was only able to net half of the fish before it darted away requiring a second or third or fourth attempt. It’s all physics. Large holes in a polypropylene or nylon net have almost zero drag so you can scoop like lightning but it’s hard on the fish. If you’re planning on keeping the fish this is no big deal. Also, those skinny nets are easier to tangle a hook in. Overall I was very pleased with the performance of the net. I had already played out the scenarios in my mind and I knew I would get a slightly slower netting speed but a more more useful net that would work for various fishing situations. I netted fish anywhere from 5 to nearly 15 pounds and they fit with. Once netted, it requires two hands on the net, especially the bigger ones. I don’t care how strong you are. You cradle the fish in the net with two hands and carry it to shore. The net is light for it’s size but strong. I would always err on the side of buying a slightly larger net then I think you may need. Buying a net that is undersized for the task will just cause brain damage that you don’t need.
lwg : Nice net
I like the nice big size of it for the lunkers that I catch. :) Fish don't get tangle in the mesh. Would highly recommend it.
Marc Oliver : easy on the fish and
Light weight and wide open, easy on the fish and fisherman
rkeller : Nice net
This is a great net for trout/salmon. It's nice and deep for netting the bigger ones... very tangle free as well when the uncooperative ones happen to do barrel rolls it the net. This net is also fairly lightweight compared to some of the wooden handled nets I've seen. I've netted trout up to 22" inches in this and the depth makes it hard for them to pop out even when they're pretty big. The mesh itself seems very durable too, I've had this for months and all the webbing still seems to be intact even after snagging many branches, fallen trees, and vines walking through the woods This would be a 5/5 star review if it weren't for the not so durable elastic like band that connects the clip to the net itself. If you leave it dangling off your belt or shoulder/neck or what not for long periods of time I found the elastic starts to stretch and fray fairly quickly, also trying to net fish with it clipped to your belt is not ideal and it will more than likely stretch out the elastic like band; for this i give it 4 stars but every other aspect of this net is excellent.
C. Brush : What's not to love?
Deep pocket will secure large fish. Materials are gentler on delicate fish skin, and just barely small enough to fit in my daypack. What's not to love?
JimmyG : Well Built
I landed fourteen trout in two days, hook removal was much easier as compared to my old mesh net. I should have bought the smaller net, but that is on me.
philbert : Nice net.
Good size for my kayak. Easy to use and worth the price easy! Fly fish with it and the hooks dont get stuck in it like my old cloth net. Makes for easy catch and release.
C. Brush : What's not to love?
Deep pocket will secure large fish. Materials are gentler on delicate fish skin, and just barely small enough to fit in my daypack. What's not to love?
Eric Moore : Great wading/steelhead net
One heck of a steelhead wading net. My son bought it for me after seeing me admire one my friend bought like it. The material is gentle on fish and not easy to snag with flies. Seems sturdy and well-made.
chris : This net is great. Had fish well over 30" fit no problem
Con: the screws are standard metal and rusted after 1st use. Replace with stainless screws!
Pros: Everything else! This net is great. Had fish well over 30" fit no problem. The material is good for the fish.
I love this net once the screws were replaced.
Cls : It's big and it works
Great net... guide buddy uses these and they do quite well with the big trout and small alike.
VibeAdventure : Slip proof
Perfect size for my kayak
YoMon! : Great net for the bushwhacking fisherman!
I fish a lot of places where you need to bushwhack your way to streamside or lakeside bank locations. I used to have a nice wooden-framed cotton-fiber net that worked well enough for netting fish, but was heckbent on catching on every twig and branch that I was pushing past. This Frabill net solves the problem nicely because it is much more resistant to catching brush, AND it works great for landing fish. Dries out quickly, too!
Fishing Guy : Nice net!
Great size for trout up to 15 - 16". Hooks don't get tangled in the thread and the clip feature is really nice.
Addison : Great trout net!
This is a great net for the price! Very good quality! I wish they made one about 25% smaller for a little bit less. I really don't expect to need a trout net this large in the area I live in.
Jeremyvicknmu : Never hit the rivers without one
Paired with a nice magnetic release, it's a great trout net. Holes aren't too large, so small trout can't slip through .
Bluebird Boy : Quality product
Used it for scooping fish out of my live well. Works great. Well made.
jnthbgg : Perfection
I have used many nets while fishing for trout and I have to say this is my favorite one. The small version is just a bit to small and the large is well too large for my personal preference. What this net does better than most is it has a flat deep bottom. this allows for easier catching with a single hand and less of a chance the fish can pop out. The quality of this net is nothing short of perfection, the handle is good quality rubber and big enough that the net will not slip out of your hands when its wet with a world record fish in there ;) The stitching on the net is well done and causes not need for concern and the frame is super sturdy all the way around. All in all this is my go to net no matter where I am fishing.
Kindle Customer : sturdy and has larger net area than the wood frame ...
Light weight, sturdy and has larger net area than the wood frame models I considered. I wear this one on my back with a magnetic release. Works great.
David A. : Good all purpose net.
Nice sized net for general freshwater bass and trout fishing from a canoe/kayak. Fine mesh and bag shape is easy on fish (to be released.) Floats if you drop it too. Mesh does tend to easily foul on treble hooks though. Otherwise it would be a 5.
Tony Ertola : My favorite net
Big, lightweight, nice for catch and release. The only reason that it didn't get 5 stars is the elastic lanyard pulled out of the handle after about 30 trips on the water.
thomas r. phipps : Way big
Ended up to big for wadding
Anna : My hubby uses it for his catch
My husband uses this net for his catch on the lake - not trout, mostly small-mouth bass. And he likes it. My daughter likes to play with it too :) pretty sturdy and easy to use and clean. No complaints.
JimmyG : Well Built
I landed fourteen trout in two days, hook removal was much easier as compared to my old mesh net. I should have bought the smaller net, but that is on me.
