can i buy replacement trays?
Answer: When I reached to the manufacturer (several years ago) about more trays, they replied that the unit was optimized for the number of trays it shipped with and they didn't recommend adding more trays. As that didn't answer my question, I eventually found one on clearance, bought it, kept two trays and donated the unit with less trays. Since then I ran across some trays that would appear to fit but no guarantee. They're the Nesco TR-2 Add-A-Tray for Dehydrators FD-1010/FD-1018P/FD-1020, Set of 2 . Note the different brand name. Good luck and sorry for the long answer.
Answer: I do not believe so. I had the same model - made by Mr. Coffee - for 30 years, and never had issues with needing replacement. I have the Elite, now - same exact machine.

PowayBob : Great Dehydrator. Lasts years with a little preventative maintenance.
We've had this dehydrator for many, many years, using it to make everything from Beef Jerkey, to dried Apples, Bananas, Pears, etc. Apples have been the most popular, and the Grand kids can't get enough of them. Only issue has been a need to service/lubricate it every year or so, by removing the bottom and spraying the Fan with a Silicon Lubricant to get rid of a squeaky sound. I was thinking about giving one to each daughter for Christmas, but instead am thinking of just adding extra trays if I can.

I bought this in 2009 and used it occasionally to make beef jerky. Just tried to use it and it wouldn't even turn on :( There will be no returning it b/c of purchasing it 3 years ago--unfortunately I only used it a few times before it went bust!

I'm a gun owner and I reload my own ammunition. When I'm "cleaning my brass" before reloading this is what I use to dry my brass. I got tired of the grief that my wife would give me when I used a cookie sheet and dried them in the oven (on a low heat). I can use this in my garage. It works great for drying brass, and it keeps my wife happy as well. There are "brass dryers" that you can buy -- that are sold by several large ammunitions manufacturers. However, they are just a more expensive version of this "food dehydrator". Instead of paying 50% more for a "brass dryer", just get one of these. It's the same equipment for a lot less. Anyway, this works great for drying my brass. I'm sure it would work great at dehydrating food also.

We bought one in 2006 and it lasted thru about 4 years of use of about 40-60 hours of "on" time each year. Now it seems something has burned out in the motor (fan wasn't frozen, no fuse that I could find, heater elements looked fine, etc). So we must buy a new food dehydrator.
For a cheap dehydrator, it worked fine. The trays were average; we never had a problem with food on one side vs food on the other. Rotated the trays like the manual said and left the top open 25-50% and it worked great. With some attention the trays lock in place just fine; one just has to be aware of what one is doing, versus spacing out and thinking about other stuff.
It gets a 3 out of 5 because it works and comes with 5 trays but has minimal features and only lasted for about 200 hours of use. Final verdict: we will probably look at something else having now owned/used our first dehydrator.

I ordered this for my Mom about a month ago, and it arrived a lot sooner than expected. It came in a box (within a box), securely packed. The trays are much wider than our old dehydrator, and it keeps the hot air in a lot better as well. So well in fact the our homemade beef jerky got done same day! That's never happened before! My mom loves that it came with a plastic sheet to keep the juices from dripping down into hard to clean places.
The trays are interlocking, I imagine to help keep heat in better, but we did occasionally have a hard time getting them to fit on right when we would lift a tray top check on the meat. If the trays don't fit together right away, you simply turn them until they fall back into place. No big deal. All in all, we love our new dehydrator!
