I would like some suggestions on some hard jerkbaits for cold and clear water smallies. Model, color, etc. Both shallow and deeper diving. Thanks.
Xrap in ghost or clown. Strike king wild shiner in sexy shad
Pointer 100, Baby Bass
X-Rap (Glass Ghost XR08)

Slender pointer in Pearl Ayu 97 112 or 127
Pointer 100 in Aurora Black.
I like them big, with 3 sets of trebles(better hookups and bigger fish). The Rapala Huskey Jerk HJ-14 in ghost colors is where it's at. The smaller ones just don't have the same action...
When the bite is not what you think it should be try tying on a x -rap in hot pink! This color some days really out performs any other color.
Suspending Rogue gold and blue silver orange.
These are all a great bunch of baits that have been posted. I would also suggest the X-rap 8 or 10 in the deep diving version. I've had success with these as well as the standard X- Raps. Where I fish the main bait seems to be shad and perch, so I usually try to stay in that color range unless I just can't buy a bite. In that case I'll experiment with colors like Clown or hot pink like maineman suggested. Just don't let your buddies see you throwing a pink jerkbait! ;D
X-Rap in Silver Blue, Glass Ghost, Hot Pink.
I also like the jointed Rapala for slow trolling.
You cannot go wrong with a Pointer or two. X-raps can sometimes turn the tide as well. Size & color have to be determined on the forage base in your particular water shed. What may work here may not work in your area.
Another vote for the X-Raps.
Look for the smaller sizes. Color is completely your preference in what you need.
Don't overlook the Husky Jerks or Rattlin' Rogues either! And if you have some bucks to spend, get yourself a couple of Staysees.
1-XCalibur Xt3 Twitchbait in Pearl Melon.
2-LC Pointer 78 & 100 in Ghost Minnow, Chartreuse Shad, and American Shad.
3-X-Raps 08 & 10 in Silver Blue, Silver, and Hot Pink (smallies love Pink).
4-Bomber Long A's in Firetiger, and Baby Bass.

As a follow up to this question, what are your preferences for sound given these conditions? Do you eliminate jerkbaits with multiple ball bearings, do you go with the single ball bearing to get more of a thud, or do you prefer no internal rattle? My thought on the matter (and I have yet to test this out) is that fish may want a silent bait since the fish will be able to see it very clearly, are already lethargic, and may be turned off by the noise of some jerkbaits. What do others think?
The Jackall DD Squirrel 79SP in Aurora black is the only jerk bait I've had luck with this year for smallies.

I'm really fond of the Husky Jerk for smallies, in the HJ12. Black back/chrome is one of my best. After that, Wild Shiner in glass clown.
Can anyone give me a good link on the web where pink x-raps be purchased.....I would appreciate it. I did the "google" thingie but was not able to find any.
^^^^ ~ Here ya go. Pink and on sale !

Perfect.....thanks A-Jay
This is funny....about 10 minutes ago I completed a Cabela's order with a couple pink X Raps included ;D The jointed Shad Raps are $4.49 in case anyone's interested...I helped myself to a few of these as well
The ones with the lips are the jerkbaits that have caught for me.

I see a couple of Heddon Zara Puppy's in your display......my favorite smallie top water.
No puppies, those are full size Spooks.

Very nice selection - J

I took those for another foruym. The theme was baits that actually caught good fish, and what percentage. I was about 40% von TW and jerks, but around 30% for cranks and traps. Some guys had hundreds of baits, and listed like three that worked, LOL.

I hear ya, Fishing from a kayak and a canoe respectively, we are forced to have faith in the smaller selection we have room for and most importantly, know how, where and when to fish them.

I don't limit myself, LOL. Carry 12 rods and 80# of baits.

Ha Ha :-) That is about what I carry in my 18ft Nitro
Yer lookin' pretty good out there Francho! Question: you don't get cramped up in that one position for hours on end? I'd never be able to get out of one of those things when it was quitting time! ;D
I have an Ocean Kayak...it's not for everyone
and certainly not me! However, there are tons
of guys like J Francho that just love them. Your
flexibility has a lot to do with it and I don't have
enough!
