So I finally got to go striper fishing again today. I love catching these fish. Talk about a rush and a fight. I think I have found a new species to target now. Heres a pic of the smaller of my four fish from tonight. My phone battery died right after I got this picture, so this was the only photo I got.
NICE! iv still yet to catch a striper its on my todo list when I get home
Here's the one my buddy caught last week. It went for 34 pounds.
Nice Striper, I would like to learn how to catch those myself.
Learning how to catch them is easy. Finding them is another story.
Well I am bank fisherman so maybe thats a problem.

Honestly once you know what to look for and get a understanding of where they travel and hang out at. You can easily catch them off the bank.

Very true. Fortunately the two guys I've been going with have been doing this for a long time. They are teaching me how and where to locate and find them.
Do they be below the dam? Is that Abu Garica 6500C3?
It's a 5600 C4 I believe, not quite sure off the top of my head. As for the stripers. I know they're in both Lay and Logan Martin Lakes. We were catching them below the Logan Martin dam, in lay lake, a few weeks back. They like the side creeks too. I believe they are also in Mitchell below the Lay lake dam. I'm not quite sure how far South in the Coosa they are, but I know they are in those three lakes for sure. Also they are in Lake Martin on the Tallapoosa River, as well as beliw the Lake Martin Dam.
I live in Montgomery,AL. I have a Abu 4600C3 and a Abu 6500C3. We have the Robert F Henry Lock & Dam on the Alabama River and the Jordan Dam on the Coosa River.

I like the round Abu Garcia reels. They are some strong and durable little reels. I would imagine you should be able to catch them at the base of both dams. We were catching them a few weeks back at the base of Logan Martin dam. Try throwing a white fluke on a white jig head. Everyone out there was nailing them on those. Especially when they are running water outta the dam.
I was think about using live shad or shiner minnows. I use the Abu 4600C3 for Bass and the Abu 6500C3 for Cats.
If your fishing below the dam when they are pulling water your gonna have a rough time with the live bait. If they aren't pulling water the live bait will work amazingly. If your fishing creeks in the creeks, the live bait is also the way to go. Either reel will work good for ya. Just put some 20 to 25lb test line on them.
Ok thanks for the help, what rods do you remend?
I used a 7ft mh veritas all the Times I've been. I have a couple of different rods for trolling though. My buddy is using a ugly stick and a Johnny Morris rod of some type. Eventually I'll get some rods more geared towards striper fishing. I just figure as long as I'm using a net and not trying to lift them with the rod, my less expensive bass rods are fine.
I would to replace my cheap rods with St Croix or Flacon Rods.
Homie cheap rods work as well as highend rods for catching these fish. I actually kindof prefer them. Then if one breaks on a stripe I'm not out 200 or more dollars.
I have seen a lot of expensive rods meet their demise on a striper. I use Ugly Sticks on them. I have one 6'6" MH Ugly Stick Lite and a 7'6" ML inshore popping rod just for them. If one of them breaks, I'll be surprised, but not broke.

Ugly sticks are most likely what I'm about to go and get for them. I'm just not seeing the need for graphite with these fish. Glass just seems like the way to go.
I have a Ugly Stik Catfish and Striper rod so I may use those.

Sometimes, you get the urge to use a more lightweight setup, that is usually cured by a 20+ crushing your jig 15 ft. from you and going straight under the boat.
Just started fishing for some stripers in my neck of the woods. It's a bast.
I have an 8ft Penn Fierce (rod and reel combo) from the Bass Pro down the road and it didn't cost me an arm and a leg and handles them fine. I have 20lb test Yo-Zuri Hybrid line.
Good for the price.

That ain't a bad setup. I think I'm gonna have to check one at tomorrow after work.
Yes, a cheap stout rod is preferred! One reason, it vary well may break, two, you for sure do not need an ultra sensative rod to feel a bite, most of the time lucky to hang on to the rod! Fishing for these makes me wonder why i fish lmb as often as i do.

To the contrary. A trend in rods today is being led by Shimano and their Terez rods, designed for bait as well as lures, there are boat models with gimbal butts, traditional cast and retrieve and a tuna rods that's 7'4. These rods are designed specifically for braid, they can be long and light and handle some very hefty fish.
I have never caught a freshwater striper, but I have caught many saltwater ones.
A good rod will not break......

There are no doubt there are rods out there that can and will handle these fish- I also dont think i would ever use braid striper fishing- i want a bit of stretch with them. Anyhow, huge fish can be caught on light rods with the right drag and patience- I would just not start out with an expensive rod to start out with. Good rods do break...
As always, everyone should buy what they want, and use it how they want though. Biggest fish i have seen caught in person was well over 50# and on a mh 6'6'' lightning rod- so goes to show price is not always the proverbial "breaking point" As for saltwater, sad to say i have never fished it, and need to.
I prefer mono for them as well. I use 20#-30# Cajun Line primarily. This will be the first year I try out braided line on them. I have some 60# braid strung on a rod just for using the Bama rig. That could get interesting.
im probably going to go striper fishing this weekend at Smith Mtn Lake. Will probably end up trolling mostly, and doing a little casting for them. Casting for them i have a Penn Captiva CV2 6000 with 20lb Stren mono that came with a 7ft H Penn rod, but i changed the rod to an 8ft MH Ugly Stik Catfish rod(i do a lot of catfishing with this setup). But i also have a new Abu Garcia Ambassadeur 6601 C4 reel i may use, especially if we can get some live bait like shad or alewives.
Stripers are very much like the snook we catch here in Florida, with the exception that stripers have the potential of being larger I use pretty much the same gear for each. My pretty much standard set up for inshore fishing (casting and retrieving of lures) is a mh 10/20 spinning rod, 4000 reel and 15-20# braid, a live bait set up I would be using a heavier rod. My choice of rods has a much to do with where am I'm fish as to the baits I'm using and target species, different species fight differently. Shore fishing like from a beach I can use lighter gear, a fish can't run deep as the water is shallow, they run out distance. Fishing from a jettie, a heavier rod is needed to keep them out of the pylons. There is also quite a difference between an inshore and offshore boat rod even though the line and lure ratings may be similar.
My good rods don't break the bank and don't break when handling a hefty fish, most of my rods are around a $100.
You don't need special equipment. Whatever you are using for jigs and weighted soft plastics
will be fine. You don't need live bait either, we are killin' 'em on The Rig! Here are some pic
of some fish I caught earlier this spring:
