I dedicate a lot of my cold weather fishing to these hard fighters, as do several other KC area guys, so instead of starting a new post every time I'll just post in here. I've been on them good this last week in the two short trips I've been able to make. Yesterday I shared the boat with Cbass12 and we were able to find them right where I left them last week. He's never eaten them and wanted to try them so we brought home 2 limits of wipers and 4 fat white bass that smacked our spoons the 2 hours we were on the water.
My biggest two, the biggest was 5lbs 13ozs and around 24" long.
Our cleaning station is 2 2X12s screwed to a piece of plywood for a little size reference.
Thinking I might have to chase them around again this morning, then gardnerjigman is going to chase them with me Thursday morning when I get off work before. Hopefully they'll keep playing right until ice up and I have to switch to just the power plant lakes.
I like to share the wealth and did so by sharing the details with other KC area guys and Chris S was able to put the intell into action last weekend with a toad of his own

Guys that eat them say they're much better than bass. They have red meat you have to cut out but it's pretty easy to do. If you don't cut that out though, they're pretty fishy tasting.

IMO they taste better than bass but then again I dont eat a lot of LMB, When filleting the hybrids and the whites you have to cut the bloodline out or it can make you sick. I know guys in Florida that catch hybrids out of the St Johns River up north. Whats cool is the KC group shares Intel and we all get to have fun!! I soak mine in butter milk prior to cooking, others like to use sprite to take the fishy taste away

A lot slower yesterday morning but we got two big ones, including Peter's new PB of 6.5 pounds. My big one was my biggest of the year at 6.75 pounds and a couple inches longer than my 22" board. Back at it after work again this morning

Wow, look at them hawgs. Hybrids have red meat that has to be cut out of them for safe consumption, but the rest is pretty good, about like that of largemouth in my opinion. Dont think I've ate a pure stripe before, so im not sure how they would taste or if thry have that red meat too.

My brother catches them out of Gunterville, the red meat is the bloodline and yes it has to be cut out, you are in an awesome part of the US!!!

Going to a place ive never fished before in florida later today that has sunshine bass, dunno if those are wipers but they look similar. Hopefully I dont get skunked lol maybe if im lucky I can hook into some of those sunshine bass!

Another fishing buddy of mine snuck up on gardnerjigman and I the other day while we were on the water and just happened to have both our limits of wipers in the livewell and he was nice enough to snap a picture for us.

Cool, I read that they fight harder than stripers of comparable size and I wouldn't doubt it one bit. They look thicker and are shaped like footballs. They need to stock some near me and I'll be a happy man.

I'd have to agree that they do fight harder in the normal size ranges I catch. You don't want them around you though. They're eating machines and unless you want the bass to get super skinny or disappear altogether, you're better off without them.

Wipers are a blast. You are lucky to have such a prolific wiper fishery near you, Bluebasser86. Here in Indiana, they used to stock them pretty regularly in our flood control reservoirs, and the populations on some lakes got pretty good. However, about 10 or 12 years ago, they found out that hybrids can backcross with white bass, so the state stopped stocking them in all waters that held any naturally occurring whites. Only a couple waters left that they continue to stock, and all more than a 90 minute drive or greater. You still get a few big ones every now and then from those waters though. I've only caught four this year, but they were all double digit fish, the largest at just under 15 pounds. A private lake near me just stocked another 1,000 this year, so hoping that they grow big and fat over the next few years, though it will never be anything like what you guys are experiencing right now.

Very nice fish guys, I miss Cumberland fishing, in the late 90's it was a great fisherie, now that they have completed the work on the dam, I'm hoping to get another chance at some 20 pound fish.

Every time I look at new content on bassresource.com and see this thread, I think it's about auto parts. Here in the northeast, it's time to think about taking off your regular windshield wipers and replacing them with snow and ice resistant winter wipers for the season.

The initial hit is one heck of a 'pop' on the line, yet there is about a 3-4 second period where you're not certain exactly what you've hooked, and the fish doesn't even realize he's hooked - then all hell breaks loose once he takes off on his first drag sizzling run. If the hooks hold on that run and you can get him stopped, you usually end up landing them as long as you take your time. The only thing similar I've caught before is large carp. Once you've whipped a couple of these guys, largemouth are rather anticlimatic

This was my first time back on the water in a month and a half! Man did it feel good!!!!

I have been on them too in Lake Hartwell. They are right behind my house so I hit the lake everyday. My uncle is a guide so I catch them year round helping him on his boat in the summer. I catch them mostly on bucktails. Yall might want to give that a try. I have been catching lots of them.

I use the Spro 1/2oz at La Cygne but the smaller ones work good on spinning gear.

No, that was a BPS bucktail. The Spros are much better quality but a lot more expensive so I didn't want to use them in the snaggy mess at the outlet.

No, they're hybrid striped bass or wipers as we call them. They're a white bass/striped bass hybrid. They're shaped more like white bass but they grow large like a striper.

I love bucktails. I get them handtied but I sometimes get them at cabelas or BPS. I catch striper and largemouth all winter long.
