just wondering how people have been doing on gills. here in Michigan they finally moved shallow but they are not on the beds yet. me and my dad caught about 75 keepers one last weekend.
Here in south Georiga we were fishing around a spillway and caught 45 keepers, We could have caught more but decided to head on home.
I finally got out last Saturday for a few bluegill. No beds yet, but ended up with a limit of 8" - 9.5" gills with a few redears thrown in. Biggest of the bunch was just shy of 10".
One dock, in a certain cove brought me 18 keepers in 10 minutes. Most amazing spot I've seen in years. That cove is on a lake halfway between where I live and your favorite lake. It should only get better the next week or so.
Took my four year old to a local marina Sunday night. We had fish as fast as we could re bait and get the worm/bobber back in the water. Probably caught around 60 in 90 minutes, almost all of which were hand sized or bigger. Really great evening.
sounds like the big gills are active i went out this weekend and caught about 20 gills with a friend in about 45 mins all keepers but not as big as the weekend before>
Here is one i caught about a week ago at a pond near where i used to work...
Caught about 30-40 gills at a local sandpit the other day, brought home 8 to eat.
Just glad they're up shallow again, so catching my flathead bait isn't so much work!
Gills can save the day when the bass bite stops.
I have a spot by my house that produces 1 pounders every cast if you free-line a live worm. It never hits the ground. I also catch small bass sometimes doing that. A small one is about a inch bigger than my hand and I have a pretty big hand!
Not his best moment, but my Dad caught this one. Seemed ok and swam off after we do-hooked it. When he was reeling it in, we both thought it was something huge.
i havent done any bluegill fishing this year, but i know a pond that has some in it that go over a pound. i always put them back though. theyre a blast on my lightweight rod, they just zip all over the place.
Am I the only one who bream fishing with a cane pole or bream buster still...
Took the Grandson out yesterday evening to catch a few catfish, we only had about an hour and a half, but after 5 fish with two of them being these blue gill one 9 1/2" and one 10", we put the night crawlers up and rigged up with redworms and slip bobbers for the gill's. That was the end of the bluegill and we started catching Perch 11 over 12" and none under 10 1/2". Some days you just takes whats you gets!!
Where's Fish Chris with his monster bluegill and redears??
You know when fish are hyper active when you can catch pan fish on bass size lures.
Crappie have been easy to find and catch up until a week ago. Now that the water temp is above 75, it's much more difficult.

Nice. Gills on a fly rod.
I took about 5 cane poles and jammed them down into the bottom of the lake in about 5-8 ft of water (depending on rain amounts) it is my go to place and I catch at least 50 a day. I also tried out a submersible light one night and you should've seen them. I could've almost stepped out on the water and walked accross them they were so thick.
About 2 years ago I caught a monster Longear sunfish on a fly rod. It was over 1 foot long. I had never caught a longear before and was confused about it being an off color Bluegill.
I usually catch bigger sunfish on the fly VS anything conventional.
Last year about May I was at heritage park SPRINGFIELD MA in porter lake. The bluegills were crazy. Caught them on every cast, they fought hard for there size and were good size too. Though there not strong, fast, or smart. I've blue gills because they were the first species I caught as a little kid. Also what other fish bites a bare hook, except maybe pumpkin seeds.
I caught a 14" crappie once on a weightless texas rigged yum dinger, which by itself isn't a big deal but i caught him while i was casting over a grass mat that i was dropping the dinger into holes. He blasted through the grass like a bass would....never saw that before and haven't seen it since.

I fish a pond that has some gigantic hybrid bluegill, these fish were both over 12". We catch them on bass lures too, they will eat a superfluke like it's nothing.

I need to fish that pond!!!
I had a 100+ fish day sight fishing them off of a dock with GULP! hellgrammites on a small hook.
I use em for catfish bait. There's a trash filled city creek around here that I can pull 100 bluegill out of with a handful I worms.
Hit the same spot again with the other grandson,,,,only one gill this time, a 10"er but 24 Perch the smallest was 11" 21 over 12" It aint no fluke this is perch hole, I just can't figure where the rest of the gill's are? no throwbacks either???
Don't fish for bluegills often but if I were going to, there's only one spot I'd go. In the spillway below the dam at Smithville Lake here in MD there are hundreds of them constantly at any given time. Anytime of the day or year, you can go there, tie on 2 hooks, bait them with pieces of night crawlers, and catch doublers all day long on every cast. Literally every single cast without exaggeration. I've never kept any and most of them are small (although you can catch some nice ones) but if you go there with a ultralight rod and some 2 # line it sure is a lot of fun.

That's a nice haul for the fish fry for sure !!
My brother and I caught over 100 bluegill a couple weeks ago in hastings ne. It was pretty much a fish every cast, if your bait didn't get picked off! We could've caught more if we stayed all day we only fished for a few hrs.
