So i have tried a lot of lures on these grass carp, but i cannot seem to catch one!
I have even tried flys, and homemade lures. They will come to the surface and just barely bite it, but not eat it.
Is there any lures that will work for carp that are cruising way up on the surface of the water?
Also, would doughballs or something work? I need something that floats so i can't use corn, but maybe bread? Please help..
Carp are bottom feeders. Put a nightcrawler on a hook, maybe a bobber so you can see the bite better, and throw it in the water. You'll catch one. Though, I guess catching a carp on topwater would be.... neat.
not the carp in my pond. They come right up to the surface and check out the fly sometimes and barely bite it. i also see some eating some of the berries, etc. that fall in the lake and float.
not the carp in your pond what? I never said they don't ever eat stuff off the surface because obviously that is false. I said they are bottom feeders and if you want an easier time catching one, put a worm on a hook and let it sit on the bottom. Or you can keep trying different ways to catch carp with lures on top of the water.
Cherry tomatoes, or you could snag them.
Dynamite or a bow works great.
Canned corn and bread balls work great for me.
Wonder bread soaked in Italian dressing.
Snag hook and some braid = Fresh water fight of your life.
Corn, corn, corn
A fiberglass arrow with a barbed tip tied to a heavy line shot from a bow, most effective grass carp getter out there and my preferred method for them.
Any kind of berry seems to work pretty well but sweeter ones are probably better as carp tend to have a sweet tooth.
need something that floats. My pond is very clear and the carp are always right on surface swimming around. I need to get a bait right infront of in while its swimming and thats when they bite.

Thats how we do it. Fun!!
I also have a question. How would you catch a grass carp 6 feet long that rips 80 feet of 50lb braid off of a locked down reel and then gets off because it runs through a patch of coontails to get your treble hook out of it's back?

Spearfishing.
Catch it because 6ft is going to be a record. On 5/12/2013 at 6:22 AM, CPBassFishing said:I also have a question. Bow fishin here in Wisconsin works like a charm.
my thoughts exactly. VA state record is only 53 pounds, these fish are easily 60-70. I can't shoot them with a bow because I don't have one, even if I did I would be arrested for having weapons in public because it is a pond right next to a major road.On 5/12/2013 at 7:45 AM, MarkH024 said:Catch it because 6ft is going to be a record.
Musky rod and snag em
If you think you need a bait that floats, make some doughballs and bake them a little. I recently made some to hopefully catch some massive grass carp one day. I used flour, corn meal, an egg and some strawberry jello.
I tried them one day but I think the carp were too busy doing something other than eating.

What? So they'd arrest you for having a bow in public? How do people in your state get their bows or guns to their hunting grounds? Must be a lot different in your state. We can bowfish right next to the side of the road if it runs close to the water and you aren't impeding traffic and bowfishing isn't restricted in that body of water. They also make fish gigs if the carp let you get close enough. Probably have to tie some rope to the gig handle though otherwise you may end up swimming trying to stop a grassie that big after you stick it.

Pull a people and get yourself a weighted treble hook and so 500lb test rope or whatever that stuff is. Toss it out rip it back and hang on. Tie one side to a tree or something. Though I think snagging is not considered catching so even if it was a record it would not count as a "catch"
dough, bread, corn or even grass works great. Just make sure the bait is floating on the surface.
I like the bowfishing idea personally.
Try this..
Bagels yum.
had started fishing a very small private pond for bass and noticed 5 or 6 large grass carp cruising. So the next day I came back and fished for 5 hours for them with no luck. I was chumming with bread and they would swim around the hooked bread ball scared by the line or hook and then would eat all the bread off the surface. The second day I rigged up just a clear controller float with a 1/0 hook and a piece of bagel. They were still hesitant of the bait but i was eventually able to rig it so that the hook would sit on top of the floating bagel and out of the water and view of the fish. Had a couple of them mouth it then spit it out then finally I hooked and landed this 54″ monster. Too bad I didn’t have a large enough scale to weight it.
I'd use the same set up for carp that I'd use for big cat, but only with a different bait.

noodle it!
Grass carp are not carp, they are White Amur and are the largest member of the minnow family I believe. In Florida people use ficus berries to catch them, I've caught only 2 on artificial lures in 10 years and thousands of casts.

Common Carp are also in the minnow family. Grass carp behave very differently though. I caught one sightcasting to one that was feeding on shoreline vegetation with an olive woolly bugger, only one I've ever caught on an artificial.
I have had the most success with lighter tipper fly gear and Adams flies myself. They will feed on top and when they are they are the easiest to catch.
I used to have a last catching them on my 4wt with 5lb tippet. I have had fish take me into my backing multiple times.
