Catfish VS Lures 2024

fishing user avatarBass_Fishing_Socal reply :

This is just for fun for those of you who got excitement for a moment when big cat hit your lures instead of bass.

What type of lure have you caught catfish? No cutbait livebait or hand and snag doesn't count please lol. I guess @Bluebasser86will get the longest list in this category ????.

let me start first

1 whopper plopper 110, this got me very excite for a big moment, the catfish hit the lure just as soon as it hit water.

2. Chatterbait caught total of 3 catfish

3. Marabou jig. I think it 1/32 oz on light spinning setup, this one got some fun out of me.

4. Dropshot Zman TRD, almost pulled the rod out of my hand, that 5lbs catfish hit the lure right after I pitch to some grass.

5. Texas rig, Zman boar hogz

6. Just this morning caught another one on jackall Jerkbait. Also got me excite for a minute until it started pulling the line into log nearby.

Texas rigs , Little George , jigging spoon , jigs , bunches and bunches on crankbaits , spinnerbait ,and even caught one at night on a buzzbait . I thought that buzzbait cat was   a double digit bass . Talk about a rug pull .

fishing user avatarsoflabasser reply :

Have caught channel catfish as bycatch while fishing for bass on swimbaits and jerkbaits.

fishing user avatarOCdockskipper reply :

1) Whopper Plopper - It was like a shark running down a swimmer;

2) Chatterbait  - 1st cast ever with a Chatterbait;

3) Ned Rig - Have caught dozens with this, largest topped 15 lbs;

4) Senko - wacky rigged has caught 10 or so, including one that chased it to the boat & grabbed it with about 5 feet of line out;

5) Roboworm - Trigged has caught a half dozen;

6) Crankbaits - a couple, a real pain to unhook;

7) Jerkbaits - They grab them and run;

8) Red Eye Shad - one of which hit the catfish on the head on the drop, he pulled like a freight train;

9) Spinnerbait - The strike nearly dislocated my shoulder;

10) Dropshot - They end up getting all tangled up in the line & sliming everything;

11) Speed Shad - only one, but the fish breached on the strike.

fishing user avatarCroakHunter reply :

I've only caught one on a lure. It was a small channel cat that I caught on a small 1/4 ounce finesse jig. Fun on 10lb braid.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Buzzbait

Frog

Popper

Jitterbug

Spinnerbait

Bladed Jig

Lipless crank

All variations of crankbaits from Baby -1 to DD22's

All different kinds of plastics from crappie tubes, Ned rigs, to 16" magnum worms

Jigs of sizes and styles

Jigging spoons

Jerkbaits

Inline spinner

Swimbait

The only bait I can think of that I fish often that I haven't caught a catfish on would be a spook and Plopper. Jigs have accounted for my largest catfish. Biggest on topwater was a 12lb channel cat on a frog in a pond through a weed bed, thought I had a state record bass. I caught nearly 3 dozen in a single night on a bladed jig a few summers ago. I was catching catfish nearly 6:1 over bass, but one of the 4 bass I caught that night was a 5 1/2 pounder so I was okay with it.  A bladed jig is by far my best (worse?) catfish catching artificial.

fishing user avatarHookRz reply :

Buzzbait. The kitty hit the thing three consecutive times along a rip-rap causway before I finally hooked him. Lots of others but thats the most memorable.

fishing user avatarBass_Fishing_Socal reply :

@OCdockskipperif you need help reducing population of those catfish in your pond let me know. I'll help you free of charge and my wife would thanks you a lot lol.

@Bluebasser86were you fishing golf course pond ????. I remembered in the day when I did Ninja-fishing at one of the golf course pond behind my house. We would got bite within 10 second cast after cast. I should had tried lures then.

Nope, Kansas just stocks thousands of pounds of catfish in almost every fishable body of water across the state, it's a huge waste of money really. Then they put fish feeders on a lot of the lakes and pump tons more dollars into the lakes to feed them, basically making farm raised catfish for people to catch and eat. It's really dumb.

As an aside, California used to do a similar thing with trout.  During winter, they stock them in lakes where the trout have no chance of surviving the warmer spring & summer water temps, so it was a 3 month rush to catch all of the stockers before they die. The only positive was they were unwittingly feeding the bass, creating world class sized fish.

- I've caught about 6 on tubes with swimjigs.

- 3-4 on weightless senkos

- 1 on a squarebill crank, the picture of which is on this forum

- 2-3 on a finesse worm

- 1 on a ned rig

I’ve caught them on cranks and an assortment of soft plastic baits. Sounds like some of you have caught more cats on artificials than I have bass ????

Here are a few fun pictures to go with my post above:

A fat cat pushing 13 lbs that grabbed a Ned rig on 8 lb test

A 14 lb catfish that not only ate my crankbait, but also had another crankbait and a jig hanging off him from previous battles with other fisherman that he had won.

A smaller catfish that really wanted a crankbait.  These are the toughest for hook removal.

So far just the Ned rig has produced Channel Cat catches for me.

Its the reason I upgraded my Ned rig equipment to a Medium action rod and size 2000 reel.

A T-rigged senko, man I thought I had a big bass on, just an average size catfish...

fishing user avatarBassin' Brad reply :

A square bill is the only thing I've caught one on. It was a small channel cat. It fought like a loaf of bread.

Here's what happens when a catfish is hunting right along the shoreline and tries to slam a bladed jig.

How do you know it is a catfish, might be DD bass lol.

They have a very distinct roll/slap when they attack a bait. The slime coat on my line didn't hurt either.

fishing user avatarMobasser reply :

Its funny, with all the cut baits,  dough baits , chicken livers, and homemade concoctions for catfish, they love to hit bass lures! Biggest I've caught was a 6 pounder on a senko.  *** pounder on a ned rig too. Strangest was a 3 pounder on a spoon at lake Taneycomo while trout fishing with an ultralight. And yes, with the six pounder, I thought I had hooked a big bass. Dissapointed?  Not really. Still a nice size fish, and a good fight too

I caught another catfish on a squarebill today lol. I found this one spot where I kept getting pecked everything I went near it. Finally got the retrieve dialed in and a little cat chomped it. Little harder to remove cause two trebles went through the upper and lower lips. I'm becoming a squarebill catfish master!

fishing user avatarAC870 reply :

Caught 2 on RedEye Shad in last few months. You think you got something decent for just a second, then they start that roll. Caught one on an ultralight with a cricket bluegill fishing the other evening. Little ultralight held up good.

Growing up, we used to use chicken livers, dough baits & nightcrawlers and the largest catfish I ever caught weighed 5 lbs.  Years later, began using frozen mackerel and caught a few that topped 10 lbs.  However, I have caught more catfish over 10 lbs with lures than I can count, with a half dozen topping 15 lbs.

I believe it is because larger catfish have the size & tools to become true predators instead of opportunistic bottom feeders .  Once they top 8 lbs or so, there aren't too many things they can't get in their mouth and they are tough enough to do battle with just about anything.  I even saw a large catfish grab, wrestle & take down a full sized coot once, it was amazing to see.

To add to this, a lot of the time people fishing prepared baits for catfish are just casting into the middle of the lake and hoping a fish happens along, which often works for catfish because of their many senses capable of honing in on an easy meal. However, the big fish are predators, and just like a land predator, they cruise edges, stalk the shadows, basically the same thing a big bass does. That's why bass anglers will often encounter them and such large individuals compared to a novice bank angler targeting catfish, we're putting a bait, although maybe not an optimal one, where the fish lives and hunts.

I've tried so many times, as recently as Tuesday, to explain to bank anglers that they were casting past the fish they were after when I had already caught several catfish right against the bank that were obviously pinning craws and baitfish against the shorelines and in an aggressive feeding mood, they just refuse to believe me that their slow moving, bottom feeding fish could be swimming right under their noses I guess.

This is absolutely true! There are several factors of course that will dictate where they may be, but a catfish can really be anywhere it wants to be! Sometimes it'll be out in those deep holes where most bankers will be targeting, but I've caught loads just off of the bank in a few feet of water. Think I largest I ever caught, somewhere around 4 pounds out of my pond, was when I was retrieving my bait and the catfish ate it on the upslops going up to the bank. Was less than 3 feet in front of me. That was the day I figured it out.
