fishing user avatarbkohlman reply :

What have you caught that is a rarity, and please post pics if you have one!

She has a dissenting opinion on that but since she's not on here.....

I always enjoy your wittiness.

fishing user avataralberto-1 reply :

Caught a couple mean mouths but not much else rare.

fishing user avatarMacP reply :

I've caught lots of pickerel and gar...Not really that rare.

My rarest sight while fishing was having a kingfisher dive into the water and hit a Husky Jerk when I was fishing for trout on the Caney Fork.  He got out of the water and started making a commotion like he was ticked.

fishing user avatarSnakehead Whisperer reply :

No rare fish, but fish caught under rare circumstances. Caught a channel cat and a longnose gar both on a popper this year, which is pretty rare for either species. The gar will hit them all day long, but hooking one is nearly impossible. My dream is to catch a bowfin on the tidal Potomac (very rare, but there are a few in there.)

Also caught a red drum on the river here that was just a hair below keeper size, which is pretty uncommon this far up. It was during a really dry spell last summer, and the salinity in tidal portion of the river was getting up there. Atlantic needlefish were also swimming around the area.

fishing user avatarJeziHogg reply :

First pike I ever caught was a silver pike at the age of 9

fishing user avatartomustang reply :

Wife caught a mirror carp in our area, pretty rare

I guess I will go with spoonbill, while they are not that rare in our part of the country I hear that they are endangered in other parts.

None of these are exceptionally rare but they certainly aren't common, at least not in our area.

Shovelnose Sturgeon from the Kansas River on a piece of cut shad.

Paddlefish from the outlet below Hillsdale Lake, KS on a slab spoon.

101_0511.jpg

Goldeye from Milford Lake, KS on a live shad

Piebald blue cat from Milford Lake, KS on a Gulp Minnow

Not rare at all but the circumstances I imagine are. A large grass carp that crushed a 6 3/4" River 2 Sea S-Waver as it was slowly sinking.

I caught a few sturgeon on the Delaware river near trenton when we were using cut bait for stripers.  Other than that a bowfin which i really want to get some more of because they are awesome and next time i want to get one on my fly rod.

Now that is an odd looking catch.

fishing user avatarbkohlman reply :

I love these pics of interesting catches! Always good to see!

fishing user avatarpreach4bass reply :

I've caught a goose while night fishing.  I thought it was a stump, and was trying to fish it.  I ended up catching it, set the hook while I was trying to get my bait off of it, and then fought it in shock as he flew away (eventually breaking my line).  That was not only the rarest catch, but the noisiest I've ever had!

fishing user avatarComfortably Numb reply :

About a 15# grass carp on a crankbait. It hit topwater as soonas it hit the water. Aparrently Grass Carp were feeding that way on Cicadas this year. I caught a couple more the same way in a few days, including a 22# and one over 30# that got off.

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

I'm pretty proud of this one as my goal to get a pike over 30lbs took a lot of years searching. 32lbs

fishing user avatarbasshole8190 reply :

I've caught yellow perch and sauger which is extremely rare for my lake

fishing user avatarI.rar reply :

I caught a duck. Well, it got tangled in my line. What I thought was rare was the fact it seemed to let me reel it in, pick it up and get the line untangled from its foot. I'll never forget that day and I'm sure he won't either.

fishing user avatarwnybassman reply :

Not super rare, but I've only caught just the one.

That pike is a beauty!

fishing user avatarMainebass1984 reply :

This is a great topic. The pictures are awesome. I guess a couple of the rarest fish I have caught would have to be a blueback trout up in northern Maine and the 9 lb 1 oz northern largemouth I caught a couple weeks ago.

fishing user avatarthehooligan reply :

Rarest fish for me would be a 10lb musky in south jersey which is pretty uncommon. Went to the lake just to cast out a newly spooled stradic fj 1000 with 10lb braid. I threw a 1/4oz lipless crank and thought i snagged a log. Was definitely a once in a lifetime experience....

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

Several years ago I cast out a spinnerbait and it got away from me.  Hooked a tree limb that a hornet nest was built on.  Luckily after I pulled it a couple of times the spinnerbait fell back into the water.  Hornets were a little ticked off, but no one was stung.

fishing user avatarBroc reply :

I caught my first few grayling this previous fall.  I wish i had a picture to post because one in particular had a big beautiful blue dorsal fin.

fishing user avatarCreekcrappie reply :

I caught a duck on my buzzbait once. I reeled it in and got my buzzbait back.

River Otter.  I personally didn't catch it.  Another angler in my boat did.  We were fishing spring salmon on the Cowlitz river using sand shrimp as bait.  We mad the mistake of netting the critter because we thought he was cute.   Bad mistake!!  He didn't like that at all.  Sorry I have no pictures.  We were to busy trying to get him out of the boat and didn't think about pictures.

I pretty regularly fish a place that has a family of 4 river otters in it.  I see them all the time on their back chowing on bluegill.  I am always afraid that I will catch one.  I never cast near them, but they see and hear very well and can cover a lot of water very fast, and there is not enough visibility for me to see them going after a lure.  I suppose it is only a matter of time, since I see them almost every morning I am there.  The only real option is to cut it off because between the claws and teeth, it would be a trip to the emergency room.  But, they arent like a fish, and a hook could cause them serious harm, so I would feel bad.

fishing user avatarBassintheweeds reply :

Alligator gar... In Arizona.

My buddies were out this morning.  They are cool, but ruin the fishing I think.  I am guessing the fish all clear out when these guys are active.  That is the female and a juvenile, I think.  The big male was in the water cruising back and forth chuffing at me.

fishing user avatarHooligan reply :

Rarest of rare for me is a 30lb silver pike on Wabigoon. Following that, I'd have to say my favorite rare catches are 10lb and over Brook Trout in Canadia, a naturally produced tiger trout, and a naturally produced Tiger Muskie. I've caught some oddball stuff on the flats, as well. Another rare opportunity, in saltwater, I hit a Flats Grand Slam in the same day in Belize. Even better it was on the fly.
