What was it? 2024

fishing user avatarEGbassing reply :

I went fishing for a little while this morning. At about 7:45 or so, I saw the biggest splash I've ever seen. Imagine a truck falling into a pond from 1,000 feet in the air. That's what it looked like. The biggest thing in that lake that I know of is grass carp, but even the biggest grass carp in there couldn't have made that splash. I'm in North Alabama so I can't imagine there are any gators in that pond, but I'm starting to wonder. What do you guys think?

fishing user avatarGlaucus reply :

Big bass or carp. Be surprised how much ruckus either one can make.

fishing user avatarYaknBassn reply :

Were you fishing a pond?  There are gators in North Alabama.  River otters have a tendency to make a ton of noise.

Yep. It's in the middle of a subdivision though; not back in the woods or anything.

Beaver?

I don't know. I've been fishing that pond for 2 years and never seen one.

fishing user avatarRuss E reply :

A beaver slapping the water with its tail is incredibly loud.

They are pretty seclusive. Often time you will not see them. if there are any tees like this in the area, there are beavers

fishing user avatarKsam1234 reply :

I’m going to have to say beaver also, I can’t count how many times I have been fishing early morning before sunrise and almost had a heart attack to a beaver slapping its tail 10 feet from me. Sounds like a truck hitting the water

fishing user avatarSubaqua Adinterim reply :

Snapping turtle is another possibility - a large one can be well over 50#s and will definitely wake you up when they decide to go under

fishing user avatarJar11591 reply :

Beaver.

fishing user avatarBassin' Brad reply :

Lochness monster of course.

I've fished certain lakes that had beaver dams for 10 years and never once saw a beaver, but believe me, they're there.

fishing user avatarMassYak85 reply :

I'd also guess beaver. They sound like a cannonball got shot into the water. They'll give you a heart attack if you don't know they are in that lake, especially at night.

I actually have a piece of property with a pond that had 4-5 beavers in them. We owned the property for years and rarely ever saw them. Maybe 10-15 times and we have owned the property for 5+ years. Occasionally you would just see them cruising but rarely did you see more than 1.

Yeah, I have seen a lot of huge wakes in that pond before. Might be what that was.

I've seen snapping turtles on the bank there. Actually caught one once.

????

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Its a bird! Its a plane! Its......a carp jumping out of the water and making a big splash as it reenters the pond.

If it is mating season the carp make lots of noise and splash on the surface.

My suggestion is to keep going back every morning until you see just what it is and let us know.

fishing user avatarGlaucus reply :

Bass fishing is what taught me that carp jump out of the water. Slow learning. Probably spent a couple days of my life trying to get bass to bite to suddenly learn it was carp all along.

fishing user avatarDaryl Wideman reply :

I realize that this is late. I experienced a similar situation in the private subdivision lake I fish. Sounded/looked like someone threw a truck tire and wheel asmy in the water.  A couple of days later. I saw the culprit, a VERY large carp. This lake has given up a 35 lb carp a couple of years ago.

I just know it startled me.

fishing user avatarRatherbfishing reply :

Perhaps it WAS a truck landing in the pond.  Have you checked with the state police for any missing persons?

Or maybe it was an alien spacecraft.  Has your "backside" been hurting you lately?

Probably a carp, a big gar, or a beaver.

fishing user avatargeo g reply :

Years ago I was fishing a lake system right next to Cleveland Clinic, in Weston Florida.  It was in the heavy grass by the shore, it looked like a tire in the grass stems.  All of a sudden the tire started to move.  It was a snake the size of my knee in thickness. This was before the python warnings, but apparently a pet some nit wit decided to release when it got too big.  It disappeared into the depths.  I walk carefully around these waters from that point on.   I have not seen one since, but I'm sure people are missing pets somewhere along the miles of connected lakes.

fishing user avatarEric86 reply :

If someone else was fishing it could have been a whopper plopper landing.
