What set up do you guys use when fishing flukes:
Rod size
Reel type
Hook size, type
Line size
Also, what colors and techniques do you find work the best.
Thanks for you help.

4/0-5/0 ewg sometimes adding a 1/16 or 1/8 oz tungesten weight if i want to go deeper in grass instead of over it but more times than not i fish it weightless
12# fluoro. i've used braid and it worked fine but just prefer fluoro. either or works fine.
pearl white, baby bass, watermelon red are my favorites. there really is no wrong way to fish a fluke. throw it over grass, weeds, into school fishing, shallow, deep. twitch, twitch, pause. most strikes come on the pause.
make sure it's rigged on the hook perfectly straight. it will walk the dog better.
when I went to get my fluke and small plastic setup, I went all out academy to test there products. So I have the mettle, 6 gear ratio, with a 6'10 rod MHF, with 30 lb braid, I do weightless, with a bullet weight, and the bell type late on the hook with this setup. If am I using a it on a big jig head I have a big H 7 ft rod, but mainly the way I fish it is with light stuff. hook size depends on size of bait, I usually do 4/0 to 5/0 EWG owner twist lock.
I fish mine as subsurface/topwater. For subsurface (less than a foot under the surface) I use a 6'4 ML Fast baitcaster, 8lb line, a 4/0 EWG hook, and a 4.5-5" fluke. I use this in open water. For fishing them as topwater, I use a 7' M Fast baitcaster with 14# mono, a 4/0 WORM HOOK, and a 4.5-5" fluke.
For the topwater, I am making the bait jump out of the water and walk around on the surface. I use it mostly in pads or when I see bass chasing bluegills in weeds.
High speed reel, dobyns champion 683c, 15lb invizx and a 4/0 EWG hook
4/0 Twistlock hooks work great and baits last longer.
4/0 skip gap hook with a nail weight.
Mike
I would tell you if I could, but this is something I really need confidence in...:/
I use a 6'10" med/fast spinning rod with 8-10lb Invizx fluoro on my spinning reel. I use a 3/0-4/0 gamakatsu EWG hook and fish the fluke weightless and with a fast, erratic retrieve. My favorite colors are pearl white, albino, chartruese pearl, glimmer blue, disco violet, white ice, pearl/chartruese tail.
5' 6" Pistol Grip Med Rod
Shimano Bantam
Trilene XL #14
4/0 Round Bend or 4/0 EWG
Watermelon Red, Green Pumpkin

Good Stuff, iabass8! Take the necessary time to rig it straight. This can't be overstated enough.
6'-6" MH rod.
Revo-s reel
15# Fluoro.
weightless. I have tried with 1/16 weight, but IMO, it cuts down on the action

Where do you insert the nail weight? This is what i might need as i have given up on my flukes trying to fish them weightless.

In the back, just below where the hook point rest's on top for a horizontal fall or just past the nose for a more verticle one.
I use either ribbed finishing nail's or the packaged short ones.
Go slow when you put it in, theres not a lot of room.

Right now in Houston its 100 every day, and I fish shallow community ponds. I go stealth fluking.
7'6" M spinning rod
12lb braid-8lb invisix leader connected via swivel
Zoom Super Fluke Jr in Disco Violet or Baby Bass
Gamakatsu 1/0 EWG
My bigger flukes stopped drawing strikes weeks ago. I love the presentation, so I adapted until I caught fish. This is whats been working for me lately.
6'6" MHF Spinning Setup
12lb Invizx FC
3/0 Skip Gap hook

x2 on this. Rigging it straight is the key. It will spiral otherwise. Not a very natural baitfish when that is happening.
Also ... don't underestimate the power of a slow and steady reeling presentation. Reel it slowly so it stays close to the bottom. Pause it from time to time. It's KILLER!
I was able to make this work for me up north. Now I can't stop fishing the fluke.
6'8 m/f spinning rod 10lb braid 3/0 ewg or 6'6 mh/f bait caster depending on what's already tied on either rod.
6'10 M/XF St. Croix Legend Xtreme
Shimano Chronarch 50e
20lb PowerPro SuperSlick or 12lb Yo-Zuri Hybrid
Gamakatsu 4/0 Or 5/0 EWG
Never had a fish hit it as a topwater, but I prefer to let them fall near structure and slowly twitch it under water.
7' St. Croix LTB "Tube" spinning rod,, medium
Abu Revo Premier 20
8lb 100% Trilene
4/0 Gammy EWG
I skip small flukes on spinning gear aswell

I skip only with a spinning reel, as I'm not talented enough to skip with a baitcaster.
That setup is a 6'8 M/XF St. Croix Mojo Bass Wacky Rod, a 2500 Shimano Sahara and 20lb PowerPro.

I can skip frog on BC gear 90% of the time but plastics are better IMO on spinning
I use two different rods for flukes...i like both equally
Powell Endurance 723 7'2 MH
Lews Tourney Pro
30lb Spider Wire Ultracast & 12lb Sunline Sniper leader
Powell Endurance 712 spinning 7'1 M
Shimano stradic 2500
8lb Sunline Sniper
4/0 EWG hooks
Trupp, create an outline of what the guys are writing to get a good over view of everyone's input.
Just leave out the brand names.
As for me, when fishing flukes:
7-foot medium heavy fast action rod
6:1 baitcaster
12 pound fluorocarbon line
Light pegged sinker or a weighted extra wide gap hook
Tip of tail died lime or yellow
Throw it out and bring it back any way you want.
Throw it in any wood you can find.
Throw it all over the place - anything goes.
If you have lots of boat docks and piers you may want to switch to a spinning rig so you can skip the fluke under the docks and piers easily.
I kill it fishing them weightless on the bottom like senko's (and settled down on top of weeds) with VERY light twitches here and there (almost just reeling up slack). the slow/dead stick bite is virtually always on so i start there and experiment/increase speed from there (and its best in summer).
next would be light switches like walking the dog keeping the fluke in the strike zone a long time while gently darting side to side; add pauses here and there so its a 'dying fish' that starts to sink to bottom but gets another rally again. then try adding long sweeps during the dog.
the subsurface fluke bite, topwater action, or jerkbait/fluke bite window is smaller (good dusk or dawn, and in cooler water ie spring/fall; or when they are busting on shad etc). i always give it a try, even in summer, but don't have as much success as slow action. spring/fall is the exception
i like RoLo suggestion for weighed flukes:
"An unweighted Gamakatsu 4/0 Superline hook weighs 21 grains.
That's perfect for the decent rate I prefer (about 2 ft in 5 secs)."
x2 this guys philosophy from another site:
"IMO, time of day dictates more HOW you fish them than anything else. I will throw one any time of the day, however I will tend to fish low and slow during the day, higher and faster in both morning and evening."
6'0 - 6'6" medium/extra fast tip
5:4.1 spinning reel
10lb mono line
swivel 6" - 12" above
2/0 ewg hook
and of course a little jj's on the tail
All the guys talking about 4/0 - 5/0 hooks are insane. That takes away all the action. lol. A hook on a super fluke with the split belly only has to penetrate through a 1/4 of an inch of plastic. There's really no need for an ewg hook especially that big. lol.
I use this rod and reel, though spooled up with 20# Sufix 832 and I use a leader of whatever 8-12# line I've got hanging around. Mostly to make breaking off hang ups easier.

For hooks, I actually do it differently, most times. I use a 2/0 Gam. Wide Gap Finess hook, and nose hook the super fluke.
It works:
