Small Spinnerbaits 2025

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

What do you use for small spinnerbaits like maybe 1/4oz.? I'm thinking they definitely have to be thrown on a spinning setup and was thinking of using my 7ft. Medium/Fast Shimano Clarus with my Daiwa Regal reel that has 20lb. braid with an 8lb. fluoro leader. These spinnerbaits I'm talking about are the Booyah Pond Magic...I'm thinking they would be perfect for late Fall smallmouth.

fishing user avatarMN Fisher reply :

I toss 1/4oz spinners on my President BC rig: 7.3:1 on a MH/F rod. It's the same rig I toss 3/8 and 1/2 spinners on. Just takes setting the tension and brakes properly.

fishing user avatarjimmyjoe reply :

Booyah Pond Magic are 3/16 oz. head weight, and 5/16 oz. total weight. I've used them, but I've never gotten a fish with them. Their little brother, the Micro Pond Magic, has been a real winner for me. It's a 1/8 oz. head and 1/4 oz total lure weight. Although I have the casting rigs to use these lures, I don't. I use spinning gear. Don't know why ... I just do it that way.     jj

fishing user avatarJediAmoeba reply :

1/4 oz I always throw on a 7'3" medium baitcasting rod.

My 8' ML Avid spinning is spot on for small spinnerbaits but baitcasters can fling Pond Magics pretty easily. I prefer the Strike King Rocket Shads. All sizes are compact and even the 1/2oz size is dimensionally very close to Pond Magic size.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

The War Eagle Finesse spinnerbait comes in a 3/16oz size. I keep some in the boat for guide trips when a client can't use casting gear.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

My spinnerbait lineup consists of 1/4, 3/8, & 1/2 oz.

I throw em on a Calcutta 50 5.0:1 gear ratio.

fishing user avatarCam R reply :

caught my pb LM on a 1/8 oz micro pond magic by booyah and pike, they work great

I love those little lures.  They weigh right around 3/8oz and I can throw them on almost every combo I own if I need to.

fishing user avatarFryDog62 reply :

I think the Clarus/Regal spinning outfit would work well.  An alternative to a smaller spinnerbait might be to try a Chatterbait Mini (1/4 oz) or Micro (1/8 oz) a different look/vibration anyway.

Being a baitcasting guy, the rod I use for those weights if not around cover is a Phenix Feather 7-1 MLF.  If cover/current I’ll throw a 1/4 oz on a Phenix Feather 7-1 MHXF.  Wish they also made a Feather in a Medium-Fast, but the other two are awesome/versatile rods for a variety of smallmouth applications.

fishing user avatarTizi reply :

I also use the War Eagle finesse in both sizes:  3/16 and 5/16.  I haven't found a better spinnerbait.  These things just work.

fishing user avatarWizzlebiz reply :

Pond magic 1/4 oz.

Run it along the edge of bank banging off of rocks and such. I cant tell you have many bass I have caught just like this.

Also great for coming through heavy weed. Small compact and doesnt get stuck often.

7 foot med heavy fast tip with a mach 2. I can cast it fairly far on baitcasting equipment.

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

Well, here is a list of my baitcast setups: iRod 7'5" Heavy/Fast w/Daiwa Tatula CT Type-R, 8.1:1 spooled with 50lb. Sunline Defier Armilo; 7' Daiwa Tatula XT Medium/Fast w/Daiwa Tatula SV, 7.3:1 spooled w/20lb. Seaguar Red Label; 7' Abu Garcia Veritas Winch 2.0 Medium/Moderate w/Daiwa Fuego CT 6.3:1 spooled w/12lb. Seaguar Abrazx; 7' Berkley Lightning Rod Shock, Medium-Heavy/Moderate-Fast w/13 Fishing Concept Z (brand new reel...currently unspooled), 7.3:1, 6'10" Shimano SLX Medium/Fast w/Shimano SLX, 7.2:1 spooled w/12lb. Sunline Super Natural; 6'6" Berkley Lightning Rod Shock Medium/Moderate-Fast w/Shimano SLX, 6.3:1 spooled w/30lb. Power Pro. Wow, the wife may be right...I have too much fishing gear...lol...don't tell her that guys!!! Anyhow, I also have a 7' Dobyn's Colt Medium-light/Fast spinning rod w/Pflueger President Limited Edition reel that I could use. With our season up here in the North quickly coming to an end I might be able to get out one more time...which of those setups would be better suited to the small finesse style spinnerbaits etc.?

fishing user avatarGReb reply :

I throw small spinner baits on baitcasters with 12 pound mono and a 6’6” MH rod. But I throw these exclusively around heavy cover. The smaller wire spinner baits come through wood really well.

For me, I’d opt for the Tat XT or the Shimano SLX... of the two I’d lean the Daiwa combo given the SV reel.  Throwing lighter lures in the wind helps to have a forgiving reel...

fishing user avatarpapajoe222 reply :

A Rocket Shad is a great alternative to going lighter/smaller and is easily cast with a baitcaster.

fishing user avatarChowderhead reply :

Have had a lot of success with Booyah Pond Magic - throw on baitcaster (Zillion SV TWS) with 10 pound line.

fishing user avatargreentrout reply :

hank parker's classic 1/8 oz. caught me a ton of bass ... still got some with me ... that's small ... not all of us are on large large reservoirs ... works ... indiana blades ...

good fishing ...

fishing user avatarDorado reply :

Hate to be negative, but the Pond Magic spinnerbait’s skirts fall apart so easily. I’ve converted to the War Eagle finesse spinnerbaits and will never go back. Terrific lures for beginners too

fishing user avatarshootermcbob reply :

strike king lil mr. money. throw it on a 7'3" dobyns sierra 733 and a shimano curado with 12-15 lb big game. No problems. also like the rocket shad mentioned above.

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

War Eagle makes a bait that is the size of quarter ounce spinnerbaits, but weighs half an ounce.  There isn't any need to sacrifice distance when throwing a smaller sized spinner bait.  Had to go look up the name of the bait - Screaming Eagle.

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

I just watched a Flukemaster YouTube video about spinnerbaits and he likes something called  Spotsticker Mini-Me...have any of you used this, thoughts?

fishing user avatarGreenPig reply :

3/16 & 1/4 on Curado 70 and Revo ALX both with 5'6" for creeks or 7' for lakes medium/medium rods with 12 lb mono. I throw and 1/8 with my Curado on creeks where long cast aren't needed but accuracy is important.

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

Well, considering we just got 3" of snow last night and today's high temp is supposed to be 28 degrees I'm thinking my season is just about done until next Spring.

fishing user avatarBadBassWV reply :

Spot sticker mini me.  Check them out some of the best spinner baits I've ever thrown.

fishing user avatarjmz313 reply :

i use a BC on soft tip MH (lightning shock rod) for 3/16 and 1/4oz spinners.  I'll add a split tail grub trailer on the 3/16 to make it cast a little better if theres any wind in my face.
