Popular Colors That Don't Produce for You! 2024

fishing user avatarBrett's_daddy reply :

Okay, we've all heard the recommendations and seen other guy's photos of their catches...Bone and Black are considered the premier fish catching colors in just about any type of lure from hard topwaters to swimbaits to soft plastics...as long as you have a variation of white and black you should be able to catch fish. That may be all well and good for most people but for me personally I have never caught a single fish on Bone or Black colored lures...not one! Most of my catches have been from lures either in a natural forage color or Green Pumpkin/Watermelon Red Flake. What are colors that you have never had any luck with despite them being extremely popular color choices nationwide?

fishing user avatarDorado reply :

Pink Trick Worm. Guess the fish I target don’t do drag ????

fishing user avatarMike L reply :

I don't use colors that don't produce.

To your point, once I find a color that I have success with I don't change.

I use 3 for plastics..June bug, dark green pumpkin, or a red shad.

Frogs I use 2...Black and anything predominantly green.

Spinnerbait/chatterbait..Whitechartreuse or Junebug

If none of that works I'll go home.

Mike

fishing user avatarDens228 reply :

Black/blue tends to not work for me.

That being said I wasn't catching anything in the crystal clear water of a quarry on my normal swimjig/paddletail color combo so I switched to a purple/black skirted swimjig with a blue paddletail and started catching them for the first time in that color........I guess the bass don't read fishing articles.

fishing user avatarmattkenzer reply :

Watermelon with Red Flake .... not from lack of trying.

fishing user avatarBassWhole! reply :

Some colors work better than others under certain conditions, but I'm certain I could catch on any color if need be. I keep the color thing simple, but I'm color blind so it's easier. I don't think there is a color I own or have used that I haven't caught on.

fishing user avatarTroy85 reply :

I know red shad is a pretty popular soft plastic color.  I've tried it several times and never had a bite.

fishing user avatarBrew City Bass reply :

Never had much luck on chartreuse. I have my best luck on extremely natural colors.

fishing user avatarMunkin reply :

Black and blue for some reason? Solid black works great, so does black/any other color but not blue. Same thing for blue back Rapalas never work.

fishing user avatarscaleface reply :

Red fire-tail  on plastic worms .  I hate those things . Seems like every-time I use them bluegills peck at the tail .

fishing user avatarNHBull reply :

Some versions of June bug have made it in the first plano

Also added perch to to hard bait colors, and don't discount chrome.

fishing user avatarLog Catcher reply :

Watermelon red flake does not work for me. I have also found that just because a color works really good on one type of bait it may be worthless on another one.

fishing user avatarhaggard reply :

- soft plastic paddletail, green with white stripe (underbelly)

- soft plastic worm, green pumpkin with chartreuse tail tip

They worked far better in my mind when I looked at them in the store... than they did in reality.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Watermelon seed, I've caught some.on it, but nothing like all the variations with colored flakes in it.

fishing user avatarN Florida Mike reply :

I dont do well with white. I do well with the various watermelon colors, except with watermelon majic, which I rarely ever get a bite on.

That just shows how different things are.  I absolutely slay bass on a watermelon red flake Ragetail on a brown skirted jig.  Biggest bass this year was on one.

fishing user avatarislandbass reply :

First, let me say that I want it to work and wish it would work for me, and each time I see a big bass caught on a black and blue jig, it makes me want that even more but still kinda hurts, lol.

I have even seen pics of bass caught in my state with it, but just not me.

I will not, however, give up on it, and I’ll keep at even if I turn black and blue.

fishing user avatarCroakHunter reply :

Although i caught my pb on a green pumpkin worm, I haven't had much more success with it besides that one time.

Black and blue is my favorite/go to color. Caught my pb about a month ago on a black and blue jig. Water clarity is always on the dirty side where I do most of my fishing though. If it’s clear/clearish meaning I can see 12” or more down I’ll switch to something in the green family. Reluctantly lol.

I hear you and surprisingly, I’ve put the black and blue in water you described. It just means there were probably no bass there. I’ll keep at it because I really like how the black and blue combo looks and know it’s a great color combo. Catching a pb on it must have been sweet. ????

Same.... and add white soft plastics and jigs to my list. I catch them just fine on white crankbaits, white spinner/buzz/chatterbaits, white frogs, white swim jigs, but a white worm/creature/craw, or white flipping/finesse/football jig hauls water for me. The only white soft plastic that's ever really produced for me has been soft jerk baits, but I catch 10x more on bubble gum, or a natural color that I don't even bother buying white ones anymore.

As for variations of basic colors that I don't like:

Black w/red flake...black/blue, or black/purple flake are go-to colors for me

Green pumpkin w/ blue or red flake, and green pumpkin magic don't seem to catch much for me... straight green pumpkin, green pumpkin candy, green pumpkin with purple flake are Staples in my boat.

Plain watermelon, watermelon magic, various versions of "Mardi gras", or "baby bass" are duds for me. Watermelon candy, and watermelon red are both go to colors though.

Not a fan of June bug w/red flake, love straight June bug.

And I also don't like laminate colors much like : sprayed grass, summer craw, morning dawn, black shappire, etc...the only laminate I really really like is bold bluegill. I am also a fan of chartreuse or orange dipped tails/claws/etc... but factory made chartreuse tips/tails/claws or other colors on soft plastic's seem to not catch them really good for me.

fishing user avatarthinkingredneck reply :

I fish stained and muddy water.  Reds are not consistent for me.  Trying to find something as good as June Bug.

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Green Pumpkin ????

fishing user avatarTOXIC reply :

Back in the day.....before Yamamoto refined their injection process, as pro-staff I was able to get "mistakes" or plastics that didn't pass the strict Yamamoto QC standards.....a little bleed of color where it shouldn't be......a little too much or not enough flake.....color not exactly right and a host of other reasons.  I would get them in 100 count bulk bags.  I caught more dang fish on the "mistakes" than you could imagine.  One year I caught 5 citation fish (over 8lbs) on one color of "mistake".  I have the remnants of an old bag of "mistakes" in a purple/red laminate that are tearing up the bass on the Potomac this year.  When that bag is gone, there will be no more.  I have greatly relaxed my pickiness on color as a result of fishing these cast offs.

If it wasn't for the description on the package I wouldn't know there is a difference in many of the plastics.  I'm often told my trailer doesn't match the jig.....but they still catch fish.

Did have a pair of the Enchroma colorblind glasses,  it was crazy seeing the difference in some plastics I thought were very similar.

fishing user avatarMobasser reply :

I know green pumpkin is a favorite for lots of folks, but it's only been fair for me.Black/blue shades have worked best in worms. Jigs, I've done best with natural craw colors.

fishing user avatarRyneB reply :

pink. Some of my club members swear by a pink wacky worm and pink chatterbait. I cant seem to get bit on it.

fishing user avatarNYWayfarer reply :

Black/Blue is my least productive color, followed by Watermelon.

I am right there with you, for some reason I have not had much luck with it.  I will continue to try it though, especially for Smallies.

fishing user avatarSpankey reply :

If i were in your shoe I would not worry about black, blue or black and blue when it comes to jigs, worms, spinnerbaits or cranks. No sense in dealing with the frustration. There are way to many options. I would expand on what is working and buy some colors that are variants of what works. Chuck the black and blue on a day when things are not going too well. Days when you can't buy a hit and than it may be something that will save the day.

I don't do very well with red crankbaits. I have nice baits, red versions of what styles I use. I've tried seven ways to Sunday to make it work for me. I tried, I backed off. It's one thing to try a color pattern to see how it goes but I'm not gonna throw it all day and get frustrated. But I'm all about giving it an honest effort.

What style of baits are you trying to throw in those unproductive colors?

I honestly feel like I could catch a bass on any color if I worked it long enough to have confidence.

I usually pick up chartreuse for like 10 mins then put it down if I don't get *****. Just how it goes. I never worked one long enough probably.

fishing user avatarMunkin reply :

I can't believe Green Pumkin made this list. I have caught fish in every water clarity in the following states with it: Maryland, Pennsylvania, Virginia, West Virginia, Delaware, Georgia, South Carolina, Washington, Washington DC, and Missouri using it. The only place I have encountered where green pumkin did not work was in the engineering pond on Ft. Leonard Wood.

fishing user avatarLead Head reply :

Pb&j and black/blue are poor performers for me. I have caught a few with them but have never had a good day on them. Probably has as much to do with confidence as anything else.

fishing user avatarRuss E reply :

in soft plastics it is White.

Pink on any bait for me does not get bit

fishing user avatarfishwizzard reply :

It's pink plastics for me.  I spent a lot of the spring trying to make a pink fluke and Trickworm work, but I caught very little on either.  I think next year I am going to try Merthiolate colored ones instead, maybe I need a different shade of pink to make them work.

I hear you on this one. Watermelon seed vs watermelon red flake from zoom look very similar but I swear the red flake catches more.

I'm out here in mid Atlantic. Stained and heavy stained are the norm.

I tried to to give red an honest effort. Overall Didn't make out real well with it. Did manage a couple of fish in the lower Potomac with it.

Got the chance back a couple of years ago to talk with Ish Monroe about using reds. A time when I was really trying to make it work for me. Great guy. But he's a Cali guy and maybe his parts of the delta and a few guys who tried to give me some insite from Texas are fishing a section of the country where reds are found as a norm or a large part of color change in crawdad molting process.

Ive seen color change to craws in my area but not to where they take on reds. It might possibly have some red in it at some point in time but that period my be short compared to other parts of the country.

I don't believe color means everything. May mean very little. But if you struggle with a color move on. Maybe I'll fish a part of the country some day where reds kick but. At least I won't have to run out or order them.

fishing user avatarColumbia Craw reply :

Pink or bubble gum.  Ain't gonna do it no way no how bubba.

fishing user avatarMontanaro reply :

My dad swears by pink...cant get into it.

But I have a disdain for watermelon redflake.

Only time I have caught em with that color is burning a swimbait over lilypads...and color matters very little then.

I wont even buy the color for anything

As for hardbaits....I have no issue with colors....they all work for me at times

fishing user avatarJ.Vincent reply :

Red Shad is popular but I don’t seem to do well with Red Shad in Michigan; but it’s also known as a regional color with greater productivity in Texas, Louisiana and Florida. I don’t exactly know for sure why this is, but I avoid Red plastics like the plague.

fishing user avatarKoz reply :

Black has never worked for me. I had a black Whopper Plopper 130 and never even had a strike on it.

But I plan to change that tomorrow. I bought a black Whopper Plopper 90 and I'm going to fish the darn thing until I catch something and break my bad luck streak with black lures. Cloudy skies tomorrow show it should be a decent day for topwaters in the early evening. Fingers crossed...

fishing user avatarsnake95 reply :

I've caught largemouth bass at the northern limit of their range in northern Ontario with junebug that is supposed to be great in tannic FL waters.

Caught them on just about every color in a crystal clear south FL pond.

Caught plenty on pink and white in GA ponds.

Caught them on realistic Kietech silver flash minnow in fast-moving but highly stained water in north GA.

When it comes to color for me: haven't met one that won't get a bite.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I have never had very good luck with baby bass, pink, chartreuse, or a chartreuse tail. Watermelon red is funny.  Either the bass will go after it as soon as it hits the water, or they will ignore it completely.

fishing user avatarScott F reply :

I’m not sure who defines what colors are “popular”. It must be the cool guys who hang around the bait shop.

While not specifically a color, I’ve never caught fish on lures with realistic paint jobs. It makes sense to me that bait fish coloration helps them blend in to their surroundings. Those that stick out from the background would be easier for predators to find and be eaten first. I want my bait to be visible and look like an easy meal.
