Favorite Pliers 2025

fishing user avatarCrankin4Bass reply :

What are your favorite pliers? I'm looking for some with a sheath and lanyard.

fishing user avatargalyonj reply :

I just use my Leatherman. I do need some decent split ring pliers, though.

I use Texas Tackle split ring pliers. They are awesome for changing out hooks.

fishing user avatarMobasser reply :

Channel Lock brand needle nose pliers. 6" or 8" inch. You can buy a sheath at any hardware or lumber yard that has tool belts. These last forever

I'll tell you what I don't use anymore - hemostats.

Those things fail with heavy hooks that are hard to remove (at least mine did). They end up like a pair of scissors with the ends slipping past each other. The first time that happened was the last time I used them.

There may be better hemos out there, but I'm fine with my multi-tool pliers, and a needle nose pliers deep in my back pack if I should need it.

Edit to add:

I just bought the Texas Tackle split-ring pliers and they work great for that.

I totally agree about the hemostats. I have some nice Dr. Slick’s ones and sometimes I just can’t seem get enough leverage to remove a hook.

Does the point for the split rings get in the way of removing the hook from a fish?  Or do you only use them as split ring pliers? If you can use it for both that would be a good multi purpose tool

They handle both task just fine

fishing user avatarWay north bass guy reply :

I’ve lost so many sets of pliers overboard over the years, that I just get some cheap, standard needle nose in a standard and one in longer size and they work fine for me. I’ve unhooked a fish, then immediately “released” the pliers into the drink while holding the bass ????. Not gonna waste my money on something that may not be with me very long.

fishing user avatarDanielG reply :

I go to a place like Harbor Freight. They've got lots of choices in lengths, curved ends, and sizes. Sometime's they're a couple of bucks. I don't need them to close perfectly for doing precision work in the shop so they're just fine. If they rust a bit or I drop them off the boat.. no great loss. Often I've got another pair or two ready. For the price they're just fine.

My split ring pliers and my bait making stuff is much better though. Not fun working with cheap pliers for stuff like that.

fishing user avatarmichaelb reply :

I just bought a pair of danco pliers as an upgrade/replacement; they arrived today and look substantial and pretty nice. My previous pliers had the side cutter, which can work well if you get use to that, but I wanted to go back to having the cutter inside the jaws again, I also liked the look of the more substantial jaws with more leverage. I rarely need pliers for bass, so these are mostly for dealing with pike. I did not like having the split ring tip, I do think it can get in the way if you are dealing with a deeply swallowed hook, and I also didn't want crimps, since I have a crimper. So finding fishing pliers (for a reasonable price) with straight jaws without any of that is harder than it may seem.

They have endless colors; the option I picked only came in a strange color scheme ("peacock bass") and if this matters, the actual color is duller and less bright than what is pictured there.

fishing user avatarSpankey reply :

I've been satisfied with the Rapala stuff over the years. Have a good selection to handle almost any issue. And they do not rust.

fishing user avatarFishes in trees reply :

True fact - hemostats don't work real good with heavy hooks - they only work ok with lighter hooks.  Still, I carry a few pairs in my on board tool box - like your surly old shop teacher barked - "Use the right tool for the job!"   Sometimes hemostats are the right tool.

I would add that I'm not concerned about weight at all in my boat.  I carry quite a few things that I might or very occasionally use.   Tools that I might use once or twice a year, or some years not at all, are par for the course.  I don't use my secchi disc or push pole very often, but I don't leave the dock without them on the boat.

Oh, I remember that the original intent of this post was pliers.  I have several different sets of needle nose pliers and needle nose vice grips scattered around the boat.  Not a big fan of those pliers that have the split ring wedge on the tip.

That is what the Texas Tackle split ring pliers are for.

I just bought Berkley's aluminum 5" split ring pliers with some Amazon gift cards I had amassed and got them in the mail today. I figure a nice pair of split ring pliers is in order as I have only had cheapos. I have not yet used them yet but they feel very nice and hopefully I will have them for years to come. They do come with a sheath and lanyard as well, which I will probably strap to my kayak chair once I get that. They also have line cutters which I hear work really nice.

Leatherman's are great for virtually everything else though. I got both of my kids a Leatherman this year, which is a nice upgrade from the $6 Cabela's multi-tools we all had been using. One of these days I'll probably grab one for myself too, but my son bought me a KVD knife with hook sharpeners which is really nice and not a bad blade either, so I carry that and hook removers and this year those will be replaced with split rings on me and I'm set.

I have owned a handful of Rapala tools, from the cheaper to the more expensive ones and never had a problem with any of them, so that's always a safe bet.

fishing user avatarNYWayfarer reply :

I have lots of pliers from dollar store needle nose to more expensive aluminum ones with carbide cutters. They all work if you keep them oiled and dry.

my favorite pairs lately are my Ozark Trail and my Lew’s Xfinity. They both have Winn grip handles.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I can't remember where I got my pliers from.  I've had them going on 20 years now and they still do their job.  As far as hemostats go, I'll use them for removing small hooks from small fish like bluegill or crappie.

fishing user avatarFishTank reply :

I have a couple of pairs.  The old Rapalas work great but my favorite pair is a store branded pair from Gander Mountain.  They are spring loaded and have side cutters for braid.

I have a couple pair I like a lot. This is the one that’s in both boats.

Great pliers! The holes for holding hooks to cinch knots is awesome.

I also love the sheath that rotates. My only complaint would be the opening at the bottom of the sheath. The tip of the pliers stick out too far and I have jabbed myself with them quite often. The split ring versions tip comes to a point which makes it worse.

Amazon has an additional 15% off right now.

I got some Rapala fishing pliers years back and they work very well. I prefer forceps though: compact, easy to pocket, good for smallmouth, etc. I've got Berkley forceps and some my mom gave me from work (She's a nurse)

fishing user avatarMN Fisher reply :

Most of my need for pliers is fulfilled by a pair of Avens Technik 5.75 inch

If the fish swallowed the lure, however, I resort to my compound, long-reach pliers.

I recently purchased the 9" Berkley pliers.  Came with a lanyard/sheath.  Have it attached to the side of my kayak.  I didn't have much need for the split ring tool, since I deal with split ring replacement at home.  I have a small split ring tool for that.  But here is what I use.......

I just ordered these today from kastking on eBay.  7 inch pliers, split ring, and braid cutters. I’ll affix the bungee cord it comes permanently to the boat where I sit.  Nothing worse than losing something ing you just had in your hands
