If you do well in high school this college offers a scholarship to join their fishing team. Now that's sponsorship at it's finest!

fishing user avatarRadical Conservative reply :

The sport is really growing. I can't wait to see how big it will be in 5 or 10 years.

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

honestly ive never heard of that college, and imho i wouldnt goto a school that was unknown because whatever degree you get may not mean as much as if you would have went to a known college.  im a senior in highschool btw.  Going to Virginia Tech :)

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

It will only keep growing bigger and bigger though

How many of your peers do you figure have ever heard of Hampden Sydney College a few hours from VPI?   I assure you their graduates are not concerned about the degree they earn "meaning as much" as any other undergrad degree in the state of VA.  There are tons of smaller schools out there that are VERY highly ranked in education instead of football!!!

I put this up for those that are interested in help with money, love fishing, and want a good future (IE education).  There seems to be a bunch of young folks on this page that fit that description.

Maybe I just stumbled on the wrong forum?  I wish you all the best at Virginia Polytechnic Institute and State University, they have some great programs.

fishing user avataretommy28 reply :

That is very good, I have begged my school to do that so that we can get some more good anglers, who cant afford to go to my school

fishing user avatarbmadd reply :

I am very close to this school. My hometown is actually about 10 minutes away. I know the guy who brought the program to the school and I know there "coach." It is interesting but I just hope that this isn't a step closer to an NCAA sanctioned sport  :-/

fishing user avatarTin reply :

Interesting too seeing as though almost 80% graduate with a degree in marketing or business.

fishing user avatarbmadd reply :

The school has always been a liberal arts school. Up untill 2010 they have never offered any degrees in science besides nursing.  Business degrees and their graduate program are their big money programs.

The funny thing is the scholarship they offer is about the same as my tuition at UT Martin. You still have to pay almost 10K to go to Bethel with that scholarship  :o

I've got a good friend that recently graduated from VT.  His degree is worth about as much as the paper it's printed on right now.  He's working at a subway right now making five dollar foot longs.

I recently got my Masters degree finished up from Miami.  I work in a totally unrelated field.  It's so far away from the area my degree is in, it's not even funny.

Shows you how much a "known" or "major" schools degree is worth right now.

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

i will have no problem with my degree, at the moment the aerospace industry has a huge shortage of engineers.  my degree will mean alot from tech.

Hopefully it does. I wish you well. But don't get your hopes up into the clouds. The real world, in today's economy, blows. There are thousands upon thousands of people out there that have graduated from very good schools that can't find work. There are thousands of people out there that have the same degree that you hope to get that are struggling to find work. Companies don't hire people based on a piece of paper anymore. Experience and references are a huge factor in the workplace right now.

I personally wouldn't hire some kid fresh out of school with no experience in a specific job field. I'd rather have somebody that has at least a little experience.

fishing user avatarbasspro96 reply :

A guy I fished with in a state tourney got a scholarship there

fishing user avataretommy28 reply :

one thing I do have to say is as some one who fishes the collegiate tournament, I have never seen them at a tournament. I guess i could be wrong, but I dont think I am. i would just like to know what they fish?

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

sofla, you can think what you want but i can say that you are wrong and we can leave it at that.

I'm really curious how I'm wrong.  You're telling me that people everywhere, college educated or not aren't struggled in the current job market?  Like I said, I hope you do well.  I don't know you or wish any ill will on you.  I'm just being realistic.  Once you graduate, you're joining a long list of people looking for work.  It may take you a long time to find a job in the field you specialize in.  It may not.  I realize you're going to be in a job market that has a shortage of people in it.  But you've got to remember, that you aren't the only person trying to get an aerospace degree.

fishing user avatarn2ratfishin reply :

I have a sister in law that graduated Summa Cum Laude from Vanderbilt with a Chemical Engineering degree two years ago.  She is currently worried about the job she HATES at Eastman because she cannot get an interview for another job and just bought a house.

I am currently working with a certified Civil Engineer from Clemson, graduated Magna Cum Laude and is working as a bank teller because of the job market.

We just hired an Admin Assistant that is working on a Doctorate Degree, they could have found a better paying job but was tired of getting laid off and went for something that would allow them to finish their current degree with some stability.

My brother in law owned an Outback two years ago with a degree from a highly rated school.  He is selling insurance today.

There is a thread on another page tonight from a young pilot looking to switch careers because he is making 21,000 a year in a pay range that tops out at 25,500.

On the other end of the spectrum the CEO of Lockheed Martin Robert Stevens ranked 17th in pay from Forbes has an undergrad from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania, he majored in Psychology.

I am hoping my son will finish his GIS degree.  He attends a smaller school.  The degree and certification will be all that matters as he enters the workforce.  If he is smart he will use his Kappa Sig network to it's fullest to get some inside traction.

Indeed there is a need for technical skills in the aeronautical field, though a math major, electrical engineer, and many science fields will be competing for those jobs as well.  Cuts in NASA and our government buying Air Force planes from Airbus are not going to do the field much good in the near future.

Should I go on???

The degree is like a resume.  It opens a door that someone else may not have opened.  That's ALL it does.

Once again, best of luck at VPI.  I know it's a good school.  I actually had a couple of their engineers qualify to apply to be Air Force Officers on our Air Force Officers Qualifying Test when I gave it on that campus.

i know a young lady who did very well through school. Boston U. shes now doing boot camp in the Air Force.

if i had the choice id go Civil engineer.

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

hey guys we are starting to go off topic now, lets just stop this conversation and get back on the one about the college fishing scholorships.

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

and skunked, im actually considering airforce rotc to maybe become a cargo pilot officer.  i dont know what that position would be called.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Carrington, that position is known as a cargo pilot officer.

To be a big shot in the Air Force, you need to be a fighter jock.

Just get that degree and that commission; get your insurance from USAA; and serve our country.

We would be very proud of you if you went into our armed forces as an officer and a gentleman.  :)

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

i have horrible vision sam so i cannot be a fighter pilot.  cargo pilot though you are aloud to wear glasses.

fishing user avatarSam reply :

Great discussion.

Going from collegiate fishing to what a college degree means.

It means around $1,000,000 over a high school diploma over a lifetime.

With that said, there are people who are very book smart but cannot do well in social situations.  These are some of the people who graduate from undergraduate programs and do not do well.

As Woodrow Wilson once said at Princeton: The A students will win accolades and Nobel Peace Prizes. The B students will be powerful in politics and business; and the C students will give you money.

Bethel and other non Division I football schools who are not known around the globe have wonderful programs and their graduates do very well in life.

The only school I know of that recruiters spend time with applicants discussing food, football, baseball, fishing, hunting, the French Quarter and Mardi Gras is LSU.

LSU is unique.

I hope the LSU fishing team does better. Those guys have to quit going to the French Quarter the days before the tournaments.  ;D   ;D   ;D

fishing user avataretommy28 reply :

one thing I do have to say for the LSU teams is they are fun to be around!

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

do any of yall know what lsu is ranked?  i was very happy to see that virginia tech is ranked 4th by flw i believe.

fishing user avataretommy28 reply :

that ranking means nothing. the only realistic ranking is the one several anglers including my self did for college bass. the one on FLW had really nothing to do with fishing, it had to do with the ability to fish different lakes and many other things. on the one we did Va tech is 4th, LSU is not rank, but they were one of the first out.

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

ah ok, thanks etommy.  im so pumped though to go and join tech's fishing team.  it will be a great learning experience for me.

fishing user avataretommy28 reply :

it should be, they have a great team and dont be upset or disappointed if you dont make a travel team your first year

fishing user avatarCarrington reply :

tbh im not expecting to make it, i just want to improve my fishing and get on the travel team when my skills get to that level.

fishing user avatarSirSnookalot reply :

IMO the object of college is to get an education, not to go fishing.  However if one can get a free or cheaper ride then it isn't a bad way to go, understanding the focus is to get educated.  Me, my wife and my kids went to Univ of Michigan, not a bad a school, and I cared less if they had a fishing team or not.  Being educated afforded me the ability to send my kids to school where the cost to me meant very little.

I could not agree with Sam more, education means a better income.  For those just entering school the job market may be totally different by the time you graduate.  This has been a deep recession but not unprecedented.......Whiners are losers and winners just go about their business regardless of adversity.

fishing user avatarzero reply :

i'm planning to go va tech and enter flw college tournament but i think scholarship thing is bad because now it is become like baseball, football and nba so it will keep growing but later it will be hard to fish lmb

fishing user avataretommy28 reply :

zero are you already at va tech? I only ask because like i told some one else, they have some really good fisherman there and your first year dont expect too much, if you do great if not there is next year, esp. in FLW where they will only get 1 boat per tourny, if your lucky. but I agree, tourny fishing is hard and can be stressful enough, you add a scholarship to that it would be much worst.

It will never be a NCAA Sanctioned sport. Paintball will not be one either. Well can't say never but it is a huge long shot.

fishing user avatartnbassfisher reply :

Can't believe this was posted. I know a kid that is going there on a fishing scholarship next year.

fishing user avatarBethelUBass reply :

I actually fish for this college. I was one of the first to actually sign a "Scholarship" with Bethel University. It is a program that every school should look at. We are fishing the Southern Collegiate Bass Fishing Series, Boat U.S., and maybe a couple FLW tournaments.

fishing user avataretommy28 reply :

they do they do, yall have a real good team, but there is a difference between being in the club and being on the team. but either way what yall did last year was great.

i tell you what... after reading all that i would have to say it was a big politcal discussion about our economy ! but i do what to commend etommy. You are one of the most well spoken young men i have seen on this forum. Glad to know we still got people like you around lol

fishing user avatarevrgladesbasser reply :

A lot of people missing the point here.... you can now get a scholarship... for fishing! I hope someone who really wants to go to college but can't afford to gets in on this, what a great story that would make... "Young man fishes his way through college"

these days, a degree is not much more than a personal accomplishment.  A very small percentage of people actually pursue what they "thought" they wanted to do before school.  and in todays day and age, a degree no longer necesarily means more money.  so go where you want to go, don't rule out certain schools, and have fun.  that's what school's really about

fishing user avatarlynyrdsky1 reply :

ive looked up this school they r not bad just im trying to figure out how i would go about trying to get a scholarship for fishing from them

fishing user avataretommy28 reply :

let me correct some of my previous statements, I met some of the guys on there teams and they are great guys. if I did not have the program I have at my school and it would not cost so much to go up there to school I would have considered trying to get a scholarship.

fishing user avatarTaylor Fishin 4 life reply :

Im definitely interested Im a Junior in high school and have always made mostly A s with 1 or 2 B s a year.

fishing user avataretommy28 reply :
