Upon receiving the reel, it is labeled as fresh water use on the package, not saltwater as the listing suggests., the majority of the fishing we do is Salt. That being said, we used it at a friends stocked pond. Overall operation was smooth with no issues. This would work great for small to med fish such as freshwater catfish, brim, sunfish, and trout.

A. Darling : Good looking reel just not sure of its durability/longevity

I never heard of this brand of spinning reel but decided to go for it based upon the photos and the price. I am pleasantly surprised at the apparent durability of this reel. It is very good looking (Gray and gold). The Lj7000 is surprisingly lightweight for a reel its size and its drag is surprisingly smooth for a reel this inexpensive. My only reservations would be with the unique design of the housing below the spool. The shape allows for the easy access of sand/debris/ and other foreign objects to get behind the spool and potentially foul its function (see photo). This may be a deal breaker since I will primarily use it in saltwater both inshore and at the beach.

I got this reel for my husband. He put it on a medium weight rod he planned to fish for catfish and larger trout with. He has LOVED it. It casts very smooth, and reels very smooth. He said when he has been fighting large fish with it, it never binds you and continues to give flawless action. We would highly recommend this reel, and we are already looking to buy another one just like it.

This reel is well made and sturdy and will definitely serve its purpose. It has a smooth action with a large rubber handle that grips well however it’s good for different grip styles and still feels good in the hand. I also liked that it was packaged nicely and came with a nice little black bag. Would definitely recommend this item for any angler or would make a nice gift.

This is a great reel and is perfect for salt water fishing. I put it on a 7 foot rod with 60 lb. braided line. I won’t be using it for freshwater fishing but that’s just my personal preference. It could be used for that purpose. It’s overall a great reel and I would recommend purchasing it.

This product is extremely misleading; there is no rod. The ad states in the title, “Rod and reel combo”. There is no combo and you are paying almost 80$ for a cheaply made reel. I hate to bash the product but you can buy a very nice brand name rod and reel for this amount.

I got this to fish in the bay. I am mostly inexperienced with my main fishing attempts happening when my dad took me with him fishing years ago, or crabbing, which is an entirely different thing. Anyway, my husband fixed up a pole for me with this reel and helped me learn how to use it. The reel worked very smoothly with no problems at all. I could easily cast and reel in, and had no problems reeling in the few speckled trout I managed to catch. I did take off one point though because after a few hours, the reel started to feel a little heavy. I initially thought I would recommend it for all beginners including children, but I am hesitant because it did feel a little heavy after a few hours, so a very young child might get weary fairly quickly. But someone who is in better shape or stronger probably would find the weight light and easy to use all day.

The action is smooth and it does handle easily, so it was initially very good for me to start learning with. So far, although it's only been a little over a week, it has withstood salt water just fine and still operates smoothly. I really don't have any issues with it, especially if I am just going out on the dock to fish for an hour or two in the morning.

There are more different makers of fishing gear on the market now than ever before, most with names I’ve never heard. Along with the classic American makers like Penn, Pfluger, and Abu Garcia, and the now-common Japanese makers like Daiwa and Shimano, there are scores of unfamiliar names, mostly Chinese-made clones of the popular American and Japanese made reels. Some, unsurprisingly, are direct copies of low-end American and Japanese reels being made in China, and this Portzon is a case in point.

The Portzon is a nicely finished and attractive medium weight spinning reel that looks a good deal like one of Penn’s similarly sized Chinese made reels. The controls are smooth and it takes up line very easily. Given the low price, I think it would work well for bass, pike, or similarly sized freshwater fish. It’s described confusingly as a “saltwater fishing reel for bass trout” which suggests that the makers don’t really have a clear idea of the application for the reels they’re copying. I’m not sure I’d want to trust this in saltwater. There’s an oil port, which tells me it’s not sealed, and that’s usually a given for a saltwater reel. Maybe I’d use it for dock fishing, but I wouldn’t trust it on a boat trip- at least, not without a backup.

But as a budget priced, medium weight, freshwater reel, it’s worth a try.

The best thing about this reel is its size, which is good for casting out a long distance. However, the quality of the material is inferior. The drag is very weak. The crank direction change system broke after about 10 casts, and the lever is heavy and causes it to turn involuntarily.
