Product reviews of Camp Chef PG24XT Smoker Grill, ONE Size, Black
Roy L. Beavers : Heavy
Large cooking area and the price.
BX : Great smoker, BUT nothing but problems !
Grill arrived ahead of delivery date, thanks. Shipping box was mangled pretty badly. Easy to assemble very heavy construction, needed some repair to the handle mounting plate other minor damage . Fired right up, did the 30 minute break in. Loaded in country ribs. Set the cooking temp to 250 degrees. Then the issue began, wild temp swings in the fire box. Lows of 218, highs of 380+ , WTF ? Meat was dried out and over cooked even tho I followed the grilling instructions . I will be contacting Camp Chef after the Easter weekend.
After replacing the thermo coupler, than the controller, Camp Chef sent me a complete assembly ! That is to say auger, controller, pellet box, etc. everything except the basic grille. Over the FL summer I stripped the grille, and installed everything. When the weather cooled off in November it was grille time again. Big surprise, wild temp swings ruining by BBQ meats ! Then fires started in the auger but the grille shut down, happened 2 times ! Needless to say I'm done with this grille as I've ruined way too much meat and now have a fire risk ! Today Jan.03 2021 and the fire was caught in time ! Now I'm going to find out how good their warranty is !?
Travis C. : Flawless
I'm the grillmaster for all my friends and family, and this thing is amazing. Absolutely recommend.
k-texas : good cooker, no way to clean out pellets !!
was delivered as promised, seams to work as good as my other larger camp chef but the reason it did not get 5 stars as it does not have to clean out tube with lever to empty the pellet storage box like the larger ones have. I have this at a boat dock & I am worried that the pellets will get wet from humidity & get ruined. I sure hope not because there is no good way to empty it. turn it upside down? camp chef could have added this for about $10. not a good move on there part
Amazon Customer : Great little smoker
I love this thing, it’s really easy to use and set up... I get a lot of smoke flavor when I use the high/low smoke settings.. temperature swings about 15/20 in either direction (from what I have read and seen with pellet smokers at this price point that is common) but then will get back and hold.... I have smoked with other egg type smokers and when you lose heat it takes awhile to get it back... I have done pork chops, pulled pork and ribs on my camp chef and they have all come out great... I cant wait to get the sear box and make this an all in one for the yard!

Bill's Review : Ease of flame out restarts.
Let's talk about the patented ash clean out system. This is great for one reason only, of you have a flame out the burn pot will completely full with pellets and get to hot on a restart. This has happened to me 3 times. Granted they were cold windy Minnesota days. I have never had a flame out this summer. I line the drop tray with heavy aluminum foil and replace it as needed. When I change the foil I then take a wet dry vac to clean all of the ashes in the bottom of the smoker, the pull the handle and clean the ashes is not necessary because the fan blows them all over the bottom of the smoker. THIS IS NOT A PROBLEM.
Some people complain that this basic version does not have a door to remove the pellets so one can change wood types. I have created a solution for this. After removing the 4 screws that hold the grate in place that was installed for legal reasons because some idiot may want to stick their fingers in the auger that feeds the pellets, it is quite easy to scoop out even more pellets then the fancier models will release.
Next issue, temperature control. Sometimes the swing is a little bit more than one would want, but it has never caused a problem other than a mental one. I have never ever had any meat ruined because occasionally the temp swung a little low or high. Everything I have make on this is many levels better than what I have done with charcoal or gas, as far as low and slow cooking goes. You simply can not go wrong with any of the current pellet smokers and I am glad I got a Camp Chef for the sole reason of dumping the pellets of child windy day flame outs, as it would be a pain the the *** of I had to pull the drip tray to clean them out.
CentrallyLocated : A love-hate relationship with this smoker
I have had this smoker about 5 months. I have developed a love hate relationship with it. Sometimes it works great in that the temperature will stay true to within about 15-20 degrees in either direction. Unfortunately it often doesn't work that well. Major temp swings are not uncommon (set at 225 reached a low of 159 once, other times set at 225 will go north of 300). Despite messing with the chimney cap and several other tricks I've been unable to determine why or when it will do this versus when it will stay relatively true to set temp.
If that weren't bad enough, the other major issue is the design of the pellet hopper, it's essentially flat at the bottom with a hole right in the middle to feed the auger. This leaves a fairly large sides of the hopper that are totally flat. Pellets always pile up there and don't fall into the auger. This effectively results in the pellet hopper being smaller than it appears. You can obviously take a stick and scrape the pellets towards the auger, but this is something that shouldn't be necessary and wouldn't be if the design had even a small slope to the bottom of the hopper.
All in all, I still use this quite a lot but my frustration with it has reached a point where I wish I had either just taken the money and bought a simpler, charcoal fueld Weber Smokey Mountain or, if I were insistent on pellets, that I had ponied up the additional cash to get a Traeger. My father-in-law has one and it stays almost perfectly on set temp.
