Questions about PIT BOSS 77220 2.2 Analog Smoker
Q:
How long do the wood chips last between refills
Answer: About 2 -3 hours...the container that holds the chips is pretty small. Awesome smoker though!
Q:
What are the size of the grates?
Answer: 12 X 15
Q:
I want to buy a cover for this smoker and i don"t know what the cover number is the smoker is a 77220 pit boss
Answer: I got the cover that was mentioned in the info on smoker
Answer: I ordered the cover that was mentioned n it does not fit can’t even close the zipper all the way.
Q:
Is there an opening to add chips?
Answer: No you need to slide out the wood chip tray.
Answer: Yes there is. It is below actual smoke cabinet, and it’s own compartment. It actually is deceptively large and will hold wood chips
Answer: There is a drawer below the door that you can pull out and replace the chips.
Q:
Is it normal for them to catch on fire with Flames shooting from the bottom?
Answer: If so, ours isn’t normal! Sounds like your chips are catching fire
Answer: Smokers shouldn't catch fire, though this one is designed poorly and almost can't help it. Our's caught fire and ruined our Thanksgiving dinner. After that happened, I did some research and found out this particular smoker catches fire frequently.
Answer: Probally forgot to soak chips
Answer: Only if you set it up on top of a campfire.
Answer: Umm...No. You can’t be serious.
Q:
Does it need a cover mine will be in my carport
Answer: Yes, it does not come with a cover. I keep mine on the back porch with a cover I bought and it is fine.
Answer: It shouldn't if it's not in direct weather. But if there's no proof, then yes.
Answer: No, but it would help it stay clean.
Q:
How to keep smoke inside? when i first used it smoke is loaded. now i get very little smoke.
Answer: Did you adjust the vents on the back to how much smoke you want?
Q:
Can I use this on a condo balcony, or would it be too Smokey?
Answer: I think you would be perfectly fine doing it on a balcony we actually use it in the garage with no issues
Answer: I have it with a huge backyard....However, what I noticed is the smoke stays in the smoker quite well and doesn’t come out and smoke out a small area.
Q:
Can someone please post pictures of the wood tray opened?
Q:
I can’t open the chip tray after unit heats up it expands and gets stuck to be able to add more chips. Also how do I set the temperature.
Answer: There is not much you can do to help but you can try put high heat temperature oil on the tracks to help it slide in and out.
Q:
This does NOT require propane, correct?
Answer: That is correct, no propane. It is electrical.
Answer: It is electric does not need propane to work.
Answer: No it is electric only. Its a nice smoker,I just used it sunday for ribs in 17 degree weather, turn out great
Answer: It is Electric powered
Q:
Do you have to use the probe?
Answer: Yes
Q:
How well would this smoker work during cold winters, temps below 30 degrees?
Answer: I live in Central Valley CA where coldest it gets is lower 40s. I haven’t used it that cold yet...but I’m guessing getting in low 30s may not be good for this unit. It may take too long to get to right temp, and it may have trouble holding. That’s just my take on it. Seems like a unit built for California.
Q:
is it normal for the smoker to bounce back and forth from 255 to 231 over and over ?
Answer: Yes.....depends on the on/off mood swings of the thermostat. I use a separate remote thermo and shoot for the median temp while cooking. ....also, refrain from opening the door so much.
Answer: No, mine stays fairly constant.
Answer: Yes, but it seems to work. I have been pleased with the results.
Q:
Is this dual voltage?
Answer: No 110
Q:
Can you cold smoke cheese with this smoker?
Q:
What cover size is needed with this smoker?
Answer: Measure its dimensions and order appropriately.

Q:
What are the grill rack dimensions?
Q:
Does this smoker automatically feed chips to maintain temperature?
Answer: This is electric and temp is controlled by electricity. No automatic chip feed.
Answer: No. You will have to add chips yourself.
Answer: No it has a tray to fill, and monitor
Answer: no
Answer: No
Q:
Can you use wood pellets instead of wood chips
Answer: We do not recommend to use wood pellets because they can catch fire to quickly and be hazardous.
Answer: Have not tried but it should work
Answer: Yes
Q:
Can you smoke a 12-14 pound turkey
Answer: If u take out all but one rack..I bet you could get a 12-14 lb’er in there. You may need to tie your drumsticks up also.
Answer: Absolutely
Answer: Yes
Q:
Does this use pellets?
Answer: No.
Q:
Are the vents on the back supposed to close all the way, or not? I feel like I'm losing a lot of smoke and heat
Answer: Hi there, no the vents are not supposed to close all the way. The unit still needs to be able to ventilate. If you need some troubleshooting tips, feel free to give us a call at 480-923-9630.
Answer: thought the same thing so I modified them to close most of the way. seems to help. first mod was just bend the tab since it was in use second mod made new covers that close all the way.
Answer: You are. Try keeping one vent completely closed, with the other cracked open only an 1/8 inch. The vents aren't a snug fit anyway and you need a bit of ventilation for best result. Good luck!!
Answer: No they do not close all the way
Q:

My smoker does not get hotter than 200 or 225F. Have it cranked all the way for 5 hours in direct sunlight. Any suggestions?
Answer: Hi there, these smokers were designed to function between 200-275 degrees.
Answer: The temp gauge is junk try using a different temperature gauge. On my temp gauge it only goes up to 225 but it’s really over 300. I use an remote gauge.

Has anyone else had a problem getting the chips to smoke on low heat. Also, the blue light only stays on at medium and above, typical?
Answer: We haven’t had any issues. As per directions in booklet, preheat, then lower temp. Fill chip tray as booklet specifies using wood chips, and water tray as specified, also. Our blue light goes off and on with temp regulation.
Q:
Is this refurbished? Why so cheap?
Answer: Nope not refurbished but works amazingly well.
Q:
Can I smoke cheese in this?
Q:
Can you use wood pellets in this smoker?
Answer: We do not recommend to use wood pellets in this unit. They can catch fire to easily and be hazardous.
Answer: I would not recommend that .. the small chip wood pieces work great ,you need to pre soak the chips (As the instructions say) to help the “slow control “smoke to happen .. if you did that to wood pellets the swell up and turn into a wood sawdust mush, and that would not help the flavor nor the clean up will be bad..
Answer: No. Only wood chips
Q:
Where is the water holder at
Answer: The bottom just above the heating element
Q:
can I use wood chunks with this smoker?
Answer: Yes I believe my husband uses both wood chunks and wood chips. I hope this helps
Answer: Yes , they work great for another of smoke.
Answer: Yes, small pieces only.
Answer: Yes
Q:
The curing instructions are very confusing. Says to not use water pan and wood in step one. Then in step 3 says to use water and wood. What is it?
Answer: Hi there, in step 2 it says to take out the water pan first then coat the unit in oil. Once the coating is done then you can put the water pan back in and continue to step 3.
Answer: Yes use the water pan all the time keep it full of water or some water tow points I can tell you off the back … …your food will not be moist also it helps keep the temperature stable when slow cooking..when you open the door the temperature drops 20-30 degrees right now,the water will help recovery time back up to a minimum
Answer: DID BOTH FROM GIT GO AND EVERYTHING HAS BEEN GREAT SINCE. EVEN USED APPLE JUICE AND ONIONS IN WATER PAN FIRST TIME OVERY CHERRY CHIPS. TERRIFIC GARNISH FOR MY PORK LOIN. GOOD COOKIN!!!!
Answer: I used wood and water when I seasoned mine. I have seen no bad affects from doing so.

Product reviews of PIT BOSS 77220 2.2 Analog Smoker
Stefanie Throop : Dose not get that warm
The smoker dose not get that warm 200 tops granit the fact it’s winter out but I think I should get warmer from going from LP. To electric I’m not impressed. That has nothing to do with the brand just thought I should share. The hardware is cheap when building product The whole smoker seems to be a cheap Ass product just remember you get what you pay for. Buy one you will understand
Td and CD Baker : Good product as advertised
This was a gift for my husband’s birthday and he loves it. It arrived as stated, minor assembly was required, he has smoked a brisket and that was wonderful. My husband is in love with it.
JD : Pit Boss lives up to its name!!
I was skeptical about using an electric smoker. I’m an old school Texas stick burner. But I have been thoroughly impressed by this Pit Boss!!! Fantastic smoke flavor throughout the meat. Hassle free set it and forget it cooking. I’ve used my Pit Boss as both a smoker and a grill. I’ve smoked brisket, ribs, chicken and pulled pork. I grilled tomahawk steaks and stuffed pork chops on mine and they came out fantastic!!! I’ll always be a stick burner but from now on I’ll always have my Pit Boss as well.
Myesha : The best
The best smoker ever. I love this electric smoker
LA : Dead after 4th use! Pitt Boss dropped the ball
Smoker was fairly simple to assemble. Top of cabinet was dented which I understand is common to have dents from shipping. Did not interfere with function of unit. The smoker is very poor at maintaining heat. Never went over 250 degrees F. Biggest problem is control unit went out after the 4th use. It took approximately 10 weeks from initial contact with Pitt Boss to receive a replacement part. However, they sent the wrong part. Subsequent contact with company has gone ignored. The unit was purchased on November 25, 2020. It is now April 27, 2021. The smoker remains broken and it appears Pitt Boss is not going to do anything about it to fix it. Avoid this product and company.
Jessica Weix : Don't waste your money
Don't waste your money. I got this smoker as a mothers day gift and it never even got close to reaching a temp of 250 degrees, sometimes not even 200. I got a replacement sent (also had to send back the original which, after a few uses, was a huge, messy ordeal) and the replacement does the same thing. Also, the wood chip compartment seems cheaply made and I struggle to put the drawer in and take it out every single time.

CODY C : Simple, easy, works.
Loving this thing. Glad I bought one. ...get a wireless digital thermometer to put inside though, and spring the extra 40 bucks for the all weather cover.
John J. : Everything I was hoping for!
This works great even in cold weather. The thermometer on the front is about 50 degrees F off, so I use a remote probe and things turn out great. I have used about 25 times. The more I use it the better I am able to get the temperature set correctly. I find the glass door helpful and easy to clean with stove top cleaner.
MomOf5 : Love my Pit Boss smoker!
I looked at so many smokers for my price point and even tho this one didn't get very good reviews I decided to purchase it anyway. I wanted one on a stand which the other smokers I compared this one to had no stand so bending over to put food in would be difficult. The other reason for this purchase was the easy access to refill the chip box, a nice large water pan and drip pan. Do cover the water pan in foil for easy clean up. I currently have tried several different meats before I did this review to see if the other reviews I read were true or not. I found that it smoked my meat great with no issues. My pics show all the nice smoke it produced. No complaints. If it leaks smoke from the door then adjust the door latch tighter and problem is solved. I made a whole chicken, 2 pork butts, baby back ribs, pork chops, turkey legs, wings, lastly for the 4th of July I tried hamburgers and hotdogs. So far everything turned out great. Next complaint from reviews was the temperature. I found that by using my extra digital thermometer that I let hang in the smoker gives me the true temp. Also, definitely invest in a digital meat prob so the door stays closed. The gage on the front is not correct, it is off by a few degrees. Which is no big deal because every grill I every had they were all off on the temp. Next complaint that people had was the temp never got to or over 350°, that is true but who would want to when this is a smoker and not a grill, foods cook low and slow in a smoker, it did great maintaining my 225° that I wanted as well as a 275°. It did reach 300° at one point but the dial just needs to be turned down a bit and look for that sweet spot and ignore their notches on it. The window, another complaint was after the 1st smoke you can't see inside. I clean mine easily with a water/vinegar mix. Wipes right off, simple. The only downside was when doing a really long cook was the smoker turned off. This happened twice but no worries, as I did 1st time, just turn it off and turn back on and then it was fine. Maybe this happens because it is electric and not gas or charcoal, not sure but for me that is minor since I often go and check my food and temp several times during the smoking process. I also don't open the door unless I have to spritz the meat. Other than that, leave the door alone to not loose the heat. All in all I love this smoker! Yes, this is a long review but I felt like all the negative reviews I found to be user error. I am no pro for sure just a 61 year old female that loves to cook, bake, grill for her family and now a smoking queen. Another pro is that I don't have to stand in front of a hot grill flipping food. Again, its a smoker, not meant to go up to 400°, buy a grill for that issue. Electric is different not like the gas, pellet or charcoal smokers so its a little trickier, I don't like to deal with the other stuff, even my char-broil grill is Electric. The smoker is solid, sturdy and easy to move since it has wheels. Thank you Pit Boss! I love it. Thanks to Amazon for a great delivery and no damage during shipping and happy smoking folks!
VA/FL Girl : Awesome little smoker!
We did a lot of shopping before we settled on this model. It’s very helpful to have a helper when putting this smoker together. It’s not a hard job but some of the pieces requires extra hands. It took us about two hours to complete. On our first try, we did baby back ribs. Smoker did an awesome job. The store bought rub we bought wasn’t too tasty. Next time we’ll make our own. All in all, we’re very satisfied with this smoker. Just need to find a great sweet/spicy bbq rub!
Robert : meat tastes great
It cooks well, but had to replace some parts as it would not heat up above 150 degrees F. Company was very good replacement parts shipped right away.
Amy : What can you do form me
This is how it came in i like it but it is damaged. I needed it for then forth of july party.
joel cantin : ne tien pas sa temperature
jaime la vitre mai ne tien pas sa sa temperature lélément nes probablement pas asser gros
Oilman27 : does a poor job of holding heat- thin frame
does a poor job of holding heat- thin frame, temperate guage has only high/low settings -there are better products available for the price of this
Amazon Customer : I don’t know what was worse. The product or pitboss customer support
Never again
Model is defective. Cannot maintain tempature. Use an independent set of probes and watch how inconsistent the tempature it is. High was at 250 degrees some days and 350 others. I live in Florida - not the weather.
Customer support had me rewire the thing, between monitoring the tempatures and working on it installing parts I probably put 14 hours into it.
Customer support promised if the new parts didn’t work, they’d refund it or give me a different smoker of equal value. However, when it came to that part, they said a supervisor would have to call me back to process. It never happened, and I’ve called/emailed with them over a dozen times and this case was opened awaiting supervisor call back over a month ago.
Really unfortunately companies like this exist and think it’s okay to do this to people. Luckily I bought on prime and the refund/return was smooth.
Brad M. : Nice smoker
Like it for big meals with guests works well
Lisa Jones : Excellent
Ask smoke some Cornish hens
Amazon Customer : Nice Small Smoker (Takes a While to Heat Up)
Nice size, easy to assemble. It took too long to get to the right temperature though so I returned the item.
Cheryl Davis/Pritchett : Caught on fire with flames shooting out from the bottom
I was being very serious about my question if this smoker catches on fire. We have the same smoke at work and we keep it very very clean. We had sausage smoking at a very low temp and it caught fire and flames were shooting out from the bottom.
Amazon Customer : Nice Small Smoker (Takes a While to Heat Up)
Nice size, easy to assemble. It took too long to get to the right temperature though so I returned the item.
Carlos M Hernandez : Buena calidad
Buen equipo con buena calidad y presentación
Beth Wall : Well built but temps 70° off
Buy 2 oven thermometers and figure out the temps on your own. I found the one on the door was 70° to low. And no markings on the knob, I carved 3 notches on mine to know what temp I would be at. On full blown high it was 350° Once it heats up there is no pulling out the smoke box as the metal expands. This is my first smoker and I'm learning still but I made some great ribs. Once you figure it out it's well built and sturdy and it seals up really well. Good value for the money.
J Snyder : Looks good but more importantly it works
Not sure what warmth or sheerness have to do with a smoker. I’m using this to smoke meat not make a fashion statement.
Overall I’m happy with this smoker. I’ve used Hickory and Mesquite wood chips. I couldn’t get the temperature much above 250 deg F until I switch from Hickory to Mesquite. Still could not raise it above 300. Good enough for my purposes. I really like the glass front. I use a meat thermometer with an attached readout to monitor the internal meat temp. Better than opening the smoker to check.
Christi : Don’t even think about buying this thing...
This smoker sucks. First time smoking anything in it and the temp won’t rise above 160 degrees. When we cured the smoker the temp was up to 300 and now.... nothing. We had a Smoke Hollow smoker that lasted us 7 years and will be going back. Not only are we out $200 but we have to buy another smoker. Totally disappointed.
Amazon Customer : Buy a separate temp Gauge
The gauge is not accurate and I overcooked my first food.
James : It powered up to season, and then never again
If you like wasting your time, get this one. I really wanted to like it, because the build quality is really good. But I was able to run it once to season it, and now when I plug it in, nothing. Checked the power multiple times - nothing. Plugged in my Masterbuilt (which I got this to be a backup for), and it runs fine.. plug this back in again - nothing. Dead.

Brandon : Won't hold temperature!!!
Seems built well, laid out well, but like several reviewers, I have found this thing doesn't get hot enough. Lucky to get to 225 when water has mostly burnt off. When pan full, struggles around 200. Light on mine flashes, customer service said it was just the light...I suspect it's the whole unit turning off and on because of a faulty board. Wouldn't recommend, sadly. Had high hopes.
Kindle Customer : Arrived damaged, temp gauge is off
Arrived with a small ding in the door, which I can live with, but the packaging should be better. The temp gauge is nowhere near accurate: it reads 290 max and my Thermopro reads 360. I've only seasoned it so far and will smoke some meats tomorrow. Hopefully, it will perform as well as my Masterbuilt. It sucks; took 6 hours to get up to 225. Piece of crap. This is Pit Bull? Their reputation isn't worthy. I lost $225 and can't get it back. Waste of money. Update: it turns out the temp knob didn't fit correctly, so I replaced it...now it works like a champ.
Brittany Henderson : Good electric smoker
After finally getting it assembled, we have enjoyed using it so far. We have only smoked meat thus far, but plan to try and cold smoke cheese.

Love this smoker, easy to assemble, works great.
satterlee davis : Easy as pie
This item was not to heavy for me to carry as a single mom… it also was super easy to assemble and very easy to keep clean so long as I did not let it sit for days. Great item for a person who wants the smoke flavor without all the hastle!

Yum good quality
Amazon Customer : "Powered by wood" - nope it plugs in and requires electricity to run
Not as advertised. Under power source it said "wood" when it arrived it had an electrical cord to be plugged in. That's a very odd type of "wood" that I've never seen before. Cannot comment on anything else as it went straight back.
