Answer: unsure,I bought mine for freshwater fishing for trout,but 100% satisfied with this real for that purpose.

In the 7/8/9 weight strong enough for an 8/9 weight rod that will be used for drum fishing?

Answer: This reel will certainly have plenty of drag power for drum fishing. That being said, you will want to be sure you are careful with it and clean it thoroughly after using it in the saltwater.
