what's the coating made out of? is it like an enamel or like plastidip? can't tell if it's glossy because of the pic, or the material.

Answer: Rubber coated

From the picture there seem to be no gap for the fishing line to pass through the retriever. How does it work? The line has to pass through.

Can this be used for shore/bank fishing?

Answer: It doesn’t work as well the idea is to get behind the snag and it knocks it loose. I’d say bank fishing I’ve had a 35% success rate.

Answer: No. You will probably get it snagged in the same thing you’re trying to get your lure out of It needs to be used more vertically than horizontally

This is the third one I have had since its first inception about 25 years ago or so. I lost the first two to not checking knots before sending it down the line, even with that being said they have saved more lures than its cost me to buy three of these. I have used these in both freshwater and saltwater and over 100 feet of water. I would highly recommend purchasing this product.

Terrible. Lost it the first time using it. The string that comes with it broke. Didn't even have a chance to get my lure back. Lost my lure and retriever in the water. DO NOT PURCHASE.

This retriever is designed only to work if the stuck lure is deep enough for you to position yourself directly above it. If there is any slack in the line or if you are using lighter line, the retriever is simply to heavy to function properly. I threw it away after the third time of it snapping my line.

Works pretty well, I had a retriever for a number of years that was similiar and worked a little better because the rods that come out of the weight turned up toward the point then down to the sides which supplies a place for the line to ride while lowering the retriever and this also directs the retriever right to the bait. This retriever is the next to the best one I have ever seen, alot better than most.

I’ve fished with this retriever 3 times and it’s already saved me 10 large deep diver crank baits and even pulled 2 extra up last week.
Started trolling deep divers bumping the bottom in 10-15 feet of water, then coming up on humps and shelves which is just asking to loose them, but it really surprises them into a reaction strike. My fishing buddy had one of these and saw it work one time and ordered mine. Won’t never be without this tool again. After using it some I’ve learned you really need to be vertical to get the quickest hookup and it’s not automatic. May take multiply drops to get it to snag the lure but you can feel the hook up plain as day.
Really impressive and interesting to play with, specially when you can come home with more crank baits than you left with.

They work great 99% of the time you'll get your rig back.
#1. Don't the the provided line, it restricts the movement of the hog obviously, especially at low angles of attack.
#2. Use a thrift store $5 reel and 100lb mono line in place of the provided line. I used to use an old fly fishing reel and seat with the pole cut off.
#3. It will pay for itself and the a lot more at low tide/low water even if you're not fishing when you find lines running out to deeper water, snag the rigs on the end.
#4. Occasionally you'll get "free" fish from other peoples snags they broke/cut off, in fact the biggest Salmon I ever "caught" I got that way, LOL.

I tried this item to retrieve a lure that was hung in the water just out of my reach by a few feet. The retriever was so heavy it was impossible to hold the line tight enough for it to work. I was using a 4 lb test for trout fishing. If I had pull the fishing line any tighter, I think my line would have broken.
