Questions about Char-Broil The Big Easy TRU-Infrared Smoker Roaster & Grill + Cover
Q:
Someone above wrote the temp goes from 325-450, is that true you cannot bring it down to 205 for slow smoking?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer:
Answer:
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: The main thing is that, unlike most every other cooking method, infrared cooking doesn’t remove any moisture from the air or the meat, so even at higher temps, cooking this way preserves all the natural juices to keep the food tender.
Answer: You can of course add a basket in the center that is capable of supporting a tray of water. This will both knock down the temperature a bit and keep the meat more moist. I do this regularly with this unit, and while I'd prefer to be able to regulate it to a lower temperature, this "water smoker" approach does help the smoking process quite a bit by extending cooking/smoking times.
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Regardless of using a water container it impossible to maintain a true smoker temperature
Answer: I had the setting on the lowest possible and the thermometer I had put inside read 360. It runs way to hot. It over cooked my 9lb pork but in 5 hours. I'm not happy since I but it to be a smoker. I will be contacting charbroil.
Answer: It is a smoker, I believe what people mean to say is that it is not a cold smoking unit.
Answer: U can set it based on gas flow but I don't use this one I mainly use the electric one I have as it's less work you can set it n let it do it's thing. Only use this one for doing a turkey.
Q:
what size propane tank do you use?
Answer: Hi, I don't know the size of the propane tank but it is the standard size that you get from Blue Rhino, you give an empty and get a full one for approx. $20.00. Also, do yourself a favor and never use a bristle grill brush. I took a bristle out of my mouth while eating a hamburger, then I closely inspected the grill and saw many trapped on the lower grate supports. Charbroil makes a red nylon one they recommend. Google grill brush bristle injuries, you won't believe it. I had no idea. I am trying to tell everyone I can.
Answer: Same as any gas grill sold in USA. I think they are 20 lbs tanks.
Answer: Just a regular size - I think it's a 20lb.
Answer: 275 gallons minimum
Answer: The small one. Believe it is the 20 lbs one.
Answer: 3gal.on up
Q:
How does this compare to charcoal grills? We love steak, chicken and chops... will we be disappointed?
Answer: This will be a great grill for you,.. I suggest you review the manual on how it sets up. If you are cooking for more than 4 I suggest buying another insert for the grill rack, again, do some online research. The meat will remain moist! I bought mine to use as a smoker but not as impressed with that function as I cannot get the temp to stay down to 210-225.
Answer: I have cooked with infrared numerous times and have found that it is probably the best way to cook. Once you really know what you’re doing I don’t know how you can get more freshness and flavor from any other method, while still getting the grill/smoke flavor along with it.
Answer: It works well as a gas grill and you can add wood chips for that wood fired flavor. Not the same as charcoal, but very good and can be varied with different wood types . Best part is no flareups. the grease drops to the bottom and burns for some more smoke and flavor (like a gas grill) but flames are far from meat. Worst part is small cooking surface. A light rub of vegetable oil on gates before grilling does wonders for the meat not sticking.
Answer: This grill is very good if you are not cooking for a lot of people. I've used it as a grill and a roaster. It heats up fast and cooks hot. It's just not that big.
Q:
What is the cooking time vs frying, frying being 3.5 min per pound?
Answer: 10-12 minutes per pound but there is no preheating time required. Having done deep fried and using the Big Easy, Total time is about the same.
Answer: Roughly 9 min. cooking time. But take into consideration the time spent measuring the oil, drying the bird, heating the oil, cooling the oil and putting it away. Also after a few uses you have to get rid of the oil. I deep fried birds for years so I know the deal. The charbroil just has to be lit chuck the bird in and forget about it. No worries. Comes out just as good .Plus you can add smoke if you want. I use my frier now to make large batches of chilly or brew beer. Cheers
Answer: Best way to do your Turkey is to insert an electronic thermometer, and cover the breast side up with aluminum foil.
Answer: I don't think this would work very well for brewing. You would need a pot that fits inside of it.
Q:
Will this do the same thing as the "The Big Easy Oil-less Turkey Fryer"? I understand that this one does more but will it do the same as the other?
Answer: Oh yes, I will actually handle up to a 25# Turkey where the other handles up to a 16# Turkey.
Q:
Can the temperature be gradually increased like the volume on a radio or is it either high or low heat? TY
Answer: It has a gas control that can gradually regulate the temperature from 325-450 degrees. I bought mine for thanksgiving and now use it for just about anything, it is a true "Jack of All Trades" smoker; I love it!
Answer: Seems to be mostly hi or low it's kinda hard to set an exact temp but you don't really need to preheat much unless your smoking. I'm still loving my SRG I feel it's been a very well worth the money I spent.
Answer: It can be regulated. There is a dial that reduces your flames the same you use to turn the gas on. Hope this was useful, enjoy.
Q:
Which model is this one as it's stated that it's the 141 model, however, there are several mentions of size 18 x 24 x 36 and 24 x 24 x 36.
Answer: This is 18x24x36 and is Model # 12101550 on Char Broil site. You might want to call customer service at Amazon. My husband loves this model. He had the smaller one and loves this one even more. Model # 1410550 has black base.
Q:
My b-i-l likes to have turkey 'drippings' to make soup with and gravy. Would one get much from using this cooker? Thanks.
Answer: Yes. The drippings collect in the drip tray in the bottom. Just remember, the drippings must be cooked after your Turkey is done. It's a good idea to line the tray with aluminum foil. or one of the trays that are available, just to help with clean-up.
Answer: Yes, the drip pan in the bottom of the cooker will catch the drippings for your gravy. Enjoy!!
Answer: There is a drip pan drawer where I place a tin to catch the drippings from the turkey...made great gravy!
Q:
How durable? Have you had it for more than 2 years?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Yes. Kept it covered or in garage. Hav had for over 4yrs., only now showing it's age. Some tust on bottom from being outside almost year round. "She" s still loyal and functional. THE B EST PURCHASE FOR A GRILL#!!#!!! Buy one m you won't regret it. Bought 2 more for my sons!!!!! ;)
Answer: Only had the smoker roaster for about a year, have 2 regular big easy's for 4 years, use them all a lot. Have had no issues with any of the 3 units. Biggest issue for me is the stainless steel tanks and grill racks clean. Found taking them to the car wash works well though.
Answer: 3 years. Starting to rust in the lower half. Just a little so far. Planning to reseal with high temp rusteoleum paint. Just remember to treat this unit like you would cast iorn and you will be pleased. As with all grills, a cover is a must.
Answer: I don't move it Lot but.mine looks the same as when i bought it. Left a few times uncovered in rain atill no rust or parts to replace. Going on 15 months. I've cooked turkeys, chickens, ribs, pork legs (pernil in spanish) this thing replaced my main grill so id say its definitely durable
Answer: We have had ours for one year. I use it at least twice a week and seems to be holding up fsntastic. We live in the Northwest (washington) so put up with high humidity most of the year. So far I believe this grill is holding up much better than previous gas grills we have purchased.
Q:
Has this grill been discontinued? it is not on the char broil website. they only list accessories when i search for "big easy".
Answer: Per Char-Broil. This item was made exclusively for Home Depot, so wont show on their website. Production dates 2015-2018, then discontinued. Amazon is selling minimum 2yr old warehouse stored item for high price!
Answer: I just chatted with a representative from Char-Broil and I was told that the Big Easy SRG has been discontinued. Char-Broil BRING IT BACK!!!!
Answer: I believe it is listed under the "smokers" category
Answer: I don't think so I have 3 brand new that I had bought from them.
Q:
is the big easy safe to use on the deck
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: yes you can use it on the deck the flame i
Answer: My husband uses ours on the deck all the time, but we have it as far away from the house as possible.
Answer: Yes as it has a built in drip tray so no grease or drippings leave the unit and the feet keep the heat away from any surface.
Answer: yes just not built in.
Q:
Do these use a ton of propane to smoke something for hours on end?
Answer: That's great! Other than my tank suggestions, I would also recommend that you buy a snake....one of those long springy wires that you use to clean out a sink drain. I had my smoker at my campsite. It was a very damp year here in Indiana and the spiders thrived... In the burner tube! It caused the flame to only go about 1/3 way around. Once I bought the drain snake and cleaned house, problem resolved! Happy smoking!
Answer: I've been using it for 6-glorious months and have not had to change the tank yet. My manliness meter is running at full and my chest hair has overgrown my body like an abandoned vineyard. Sometimes I just chop wood for the hell of it. I'm also bench pressing over 800lb. All thanks to this grill.
Answer: Best I can tell, no more than a gas grill would use and probably less because of the infrared cooking design that makes cooking fast and it doesn't dry out your food unless you just over cook......I use mine nearly everyday for grilling simply because it's just so convenient. Another feature I like is there are no flare ups from dripping fats from meat because of the design....I really like that. I did mention that it cooks really fast so that feature in itself should use less fuel. Hope this helps...
Answer: I should add that I also bought a tank that is twice the usual size and I have it refilled at TSC (Tractor Supply Company). They are much more reasonable.
Answer: I haven't used mine much so far but plan to this winter. What I have used of it though, the gas usage has been efficient. I did install a better gauge on the tank so I have a better idea of its level. You can get these gauges at Lowes for less than $20.
Answer: It does not seem to use more than any standard barbecue would
Q:
does this smoker have an electric component?
Answer: No. This Big Easy TRU-Infrared Smoker, Roaster & Grill utilizes a twenty pound propane tank.
Answer: Only an electric push button spark to start. No electric connection to house electricity.
Answer: No. It runs on propane. It does have a push button spark starter.
Answer: It does not. It runs on propane.
Q:
Can the grill be hooked up to LP gas instead of the 20-lb propane tank?
Answer: I am sure it can. Just make sure not to muck pressure going to grill you lp people should tell you pressure exiting tank and your grill should tell you not to exceed incoming pressure
Answer: Yes it can although you will have to drill out the orifice in order to make it larger. Search online to find the correct #drill bit.
Q:
How well does it smoke fish? I have not found much information on this. Even Charbroil doesn't know much.
Answer: I have cooked shrimp, salmon with the smoker going to add that smoky flavor. BUT I have never actually smoked fish in the fashion you are asking. I'll bet it will be good. No matter what you do with it. . Maybe to keep the temp down, keep the top open while you're cooking. Everything is great. Please let me know how it works out.
Answer: I haven't done fish however I have smoked a large pork shoulder, several racks of ribs and a boneless pork roast and all took about a third less amount of time, so I would really watch the timing of fish. I really enjoy my Big Easy and will be trying most anything.
Answer: WE HAVE TRY EVERYTHING but fish. bake a homemade mac and cheese was delicious. I dont care what you cook on it it comes out great. I forgot we did do shrimp but with the right seasoning it will turn out great
Answer: Its pretty good at smoking fish if you want to slow cook you are only going to get the temperature so low. The lower you put your food to the bottom of grill it seems not to get as hot if you want to cook food longer ..the closer to the top the hotter it seems to get. Fish taste good with cherry wood chips . I love my grill for the money I spent it does everything I need but if you want it to be absolutely perfect you will need a strictly smoker grill.
Q:
I need the replacement basket for this
Answer: I would go back to Char Broil, I am sure they can help you. QVC or HSN would probably not be able to get just the basket.
Q:
Is the grease tray supposed to match the curvature of the body of the Smoker, roaster and grill? Mine does not.
Answer: On mine both the handle end and the other end are slightly curved, the handle end does match the curvature of the body. Hope this helps.
Answer: Not perfectly but yes I think.
Q:
There are pics of black legs and silver, black legs is the newer model (#1410550) which one is this?
Answer: black legs dont know what the newer model is
Q:
Is 2 in 1 electric smoker roaster still made? (11101625)
Answer: No
Q:
Can I use charcoal instead of wood chips?
Answer: No. Charcoal should never be used with this Big Easy TRU-Infrared Smoker Roaster & Grill.
Answer: don't know why you would want to. You get the flavor from the wood and the heat from the propane.
Answer: The area that the wood chips go is pretty small and so I don’t think that’ll work well.
Answer: I don’t think you can. I personally would not. I don’t think that would work and you would probably ruin it.
Q:
What's the difference between model 12101550 and 14101550 ?
Answer: Looks like the 14101550 is their new model and has a few more accessories as well. I have the 12101550 and very pleased.
Answer: The only difference I can figure out is the 121 has a steel grate for the grill part and the 141 has a porcelain coated steel grate and the 141 has a variable gas control valve where the 121 just has 2 settings, High and Low. I have the 121. Hope that helps
Answer: Looks like to me that the newer model has a smoker as well!
Answer: You are kidding me right? How would I know? I don't go out and buy all the models to see the differences between models. The one I have works great and I have had no problems
Answer: the 141 is propane the 121 is electric
Q:
Where it it made? i bought this same model in 2016 for $149.00 and now it's $100.00 more. bet it's made in china (tariffs)
Answer: What's made in America is good ole fashioned mesquite from my tree in back yard and let er rip.
Q:
Hi there, will this smoke meat faster than a traditional smoker? Thank you
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: This is very disappointing as a smoker. The temperatures too high in the range of temperature from the bottom to the top is so great that it does not cook the meat properly. I am returning mine because I bought it purposely for smoking and the temperatures are too high And the smoke chamber does not work properly. I am purchasing a Bradley smoker specifically for smoking meat I have heard many good reviews regarding the smoker
Answer: Yes, it actually smokes quite a bit faster than a traditional smoker. I would say about 1/2 the time a traditional smoker takes.
Answer: This grill is amazing with the infrared cooking will cook fast if you wish to. I like to smoke low and slow. If you wish to Smoke Fast it will do that. The only thing I did was put a temperature Guage in the lid which is easy.
Answer: Yes by about a third of the time needed
Answer: I believe it does.
Q:
What is the best way to cook lobster and oysters in the Big Easy Cooker?
Answer: Sorry I haven't cooked seafood in the Big Easy. I am allergic to shellfish.
Answer: Sorry, haven't done it. I like my lobster steamed and my oyster raw or in gumbo.
Answer: No idea, I don't have this thing and only learned that electric smokers existed when I accidentally stumbled onto this page. I don't like shellfish either. I hope this helps.
Answer: I have never used it for seafood but you can grill or roast them.
Q:
what kind of oil do you use to season pit?
Answer: I used canola oil in spray cans. 2 coats and rubbed it in with paper towels. Either way this Grill will Rust eventually if kept outside. However I will say this is one of the best girls I've ever had unbelievable flavor. And the smoker Works amazing
Answer: Any kind of spray can oil such a Pam. I like the Kirkland spray oil from Costco the best!!
Answer: The pot was seasoned with generic brand pure vegetable oil, and has turned out very well.
Answer: I used vegetable oil on a paper towel.
Answer: I used just a minimum amount of olive oil. I don't think it makes much difference what you use. Just follow directions for short "burn" after food has been removed. There will be some discoloration over time, but we haven't seen any "build-up", certainly nothing like a normal grill.
Answer: Vegitable oil
Answer: CRISCO professional GRILL MASTER spray. Found at Walmart.
Answer: peanut
Q:
Is there a how to cook booklet for the char-broil the big easy tru-infrared smoker roaster & grill
Answer: No I just went to YouTube. There is a few video's there, but for the most part any smoker video works the only difference is the Big easy will only go to 340/350 in temperature so it cooks faster then an charcoal or electric. I do enjoy using it..
Answer: Yes you can buy it on Amazon
Q:
Has anyone tried cooking lobster? If so any recommendations?
Answer: I live in Michigan so lobster, unfortunately, is not on the menu too often. You can cook them on here. I would recommend using a bbq mat, place them in 300 degrees, cook until opaque. Hope this helps. Can I come to dinner! ☺
Answer: We have not
Q:
As I understand it, the temp range is 325-450 degrees. Isn't 325 awefully hot for true smoking like when making jerky ?
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes
Q:
what size turkey can the SRG handle
Answer: I have had a 23lb in it with no issues
Answer: 25lbs
Answer: Up to a 25lb bird
Q:
What did I do wrong smoking a pork butt for pulled pork and a slab of ribs? I cooked the butt till it read 190 degrees (used 3 thermometer) on low setting and it was so burnt it ended up being sliced pork....took about 3 1/2 hour on low setting. As for the ribs, they too were very burnt and almost inedible...cooked t…
Answer: Well, I have had some trouble also. What you did wrong #1 was cook to 190 proper pork temb is now 140 plus after you remove it it still keeps cooking. also real low temp the lowest & it takes about 45 min. if that Set the grates app; 1/2 down & throw a chunk of smoking wood in the bottom of your kettle . Try that
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: The same thing happened when I tried to smoke a turkey. I have an infrared grill that I absolutely love, I do know that infrared cooks much hotter and faster, so I suggest maybe checking your meat more often and maybe even venting the lid for a short period of time to help control the heat. I decided to practice a few times, before inviting guests, after I burnt the turkey!
Answer: I cooked a 21lb turkey in it and used pecan pellets to smoke. I turned it on high to get smoke and then turned it all the way down and put the basket with the turkey in. I covered the top of the turkey with some aluminum foil about half way and the turkey cam out great. I put the aluminum foil over it and tucked it in a little because the top was going to burn before the turkey was done.
Answer: I agree. Whoever wrote the instructions never cooked with them! Using the grill grate with chips on low seems to work but can you imagine putting your thanksgiving turkey in the basket? I thought I really wasted my money on this product!
Answer: how hard is it to assemble
Answer: too hot
Q:
does anyone know how to cook a spiral ham in the smoker?
Answer: Just like any other ham, by using temperature gauge.
Q:
How do you adjust to high med low no markings on the control knob or control panel?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Just have do you best at guessing. I absolutely love this smoker/grill. It’s getting used almost everyday.
Q:
Do you need fryer basket kit to smoke a turkey
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: Yes. The basket that is included is all you need, but it is more of a roasted than smoked. The wood chip holder will provide some smoke flavor. I have done turkey and whole chicken in mine. Turned out well.
Answer: If you are talking about the basket that comes with the smoker, yes you would. I would not put a turkey in the smoker with it setting on the very bottom of the smoker. I suppose if you had some type of platform with very good circulation that might work. But no I would not put a turkey in the smoker without it setting in a basket of some type.
Answer: No, the Unit comes with a basket that works for a turkey.
Answer: Use the basket it came with... go online and see how other folks cook with the big easy.
Answer: It comes with a basket that would work fine. I enjoyed buying new accessories and experimenting though. Gets kind of addictive. Love this item
Answer: Yes
Q:
does it work for grilling vegetables?
Answer: Yes. Use the top grilling rack and it works great. You will have to experiment with the temperature control at first, Really works good for grilled asparagus.
Answer: Yes. Very well. I grill squash, tomatoes, corn, peppers on mine.
Answer: It will grill anything that you would on any other type of grill, limited only by the area of the grill surface.
Answer: Works like a charm, and it grills quickly.
Answer: Yes, this is an awesome grill. I grill and smoke everything from veggies to chicken to hamburgers, hot dogs, ribs and does an awesome whole chicken. In fact I like it so much I bought a second one to store away in case some day my first one gets old and non usable.
Answer: Yes it does. There is a grilling grate on the top that you can put on. Just keep in mind. What ever you put on top drips down below. Example. You have wings in the basket. You decide you want to cook burgers at the same time. The grease from the burgers drips down all over the wings. FYI
Answer: Yes, you can grill anything on it.
Q:
How do you store this? With propane tank attached?
Answer: There's a quick connect, simply attach to the propane tank and grill. When finished disconnect and store the and propane and grill. I disconnect the tank after each use, makes moving the grill easier
Answer: There's a quick connect, simply attach to the propane tank and grill. When finished disconnect and store the and propane and grill. I disconnect the tank after each use, makes moving the grill easier.
Answer: I never leave the propane tank attached. I normally cover the Big Easy and store the propane tank away from any building. A cool safe place.
Answer: No, I dis-connnect the propane tank and once it cools off I store it in my garage.
Answer: I turn off the propane tank after each use for safety as I do on all gas grills, and yes it stays attached and under a small cover for storage.
Answer: I remove the tank for safety reasons!!
Answer: it doesn't matter, attached or5 no.
Answer: According to to the char broil company says yes. It has instruction
Q:
Is this good for making jerky?
Answer: Jerky can be made in this Big Easy Smoker, Roaster & Grill.
Answer: quick answ no it has no temp gauge need temp 170-180 add a bottle of liq smoke to your meat brine and use your oven
Answer: I gave this as a gift so I don’t know. Sorry
Answer: yes middle rack low and slow
Q:
Is this one really worth the extra cost over the basic non-smoker version of the Big Easy? I'm debating between the two...
Answer: It is for the size. You can fit any size bird in it and turkeys come out great. But the smoker feature is a bit disappointing. The heat even in the lowest setting is too high for real smoking. You end up having to keep the lid open to reduce heat which defeats the concept of smoking meat.
Answer: For me it is an absolute yes. I love being able to drop the chips in the holder when I am bbq'ing
Q:
What's the temperature on low
Answer: Around 225
Q:
gas knob won't turn
Answer: did you try pressing it down and turning counter clockwise?
Answer: It’s a piece of garbage! Return it while you can!
Q:
How long does it take to heat up?
Answer: We usually heat it up for approximately 15 minutes before we place food in it. This seems to work well if we need to clean the grate any more from the last use.
Answer: Not very long at all. I don't work for char broil, have anything to do with them besides just as a customer, and I can honestly without a doubt in my mind just tell you to buy this grill. You'll love it, I even take mine on camping trips.
Answer: With the lid closed, very very quick. Less than 5 minutes. I fire mine up, walk to the kitchen to grab what I'm cooking. By the time I get back to it, it's ready to cook. Buy this grill, you are guaranteed to love it. It's incredible!!
Q:
Is there a way to fit a rack of baby rack ribs in it? Maybe curled up?
Answer: yes I actually just did that this weekend! I did not put in the upper rack, I just set two big slabs of ribs in the basket. I would suggest putting foil on top and possibly even lining the basket with foil however.
Answer: I'm sure there is. Curling them up on an upper rack might help. The basket is great to be able to adjust items. I'm looking forward to cooking my first turkey next week. Have fun!
Answer: The best thing to do is buy the clips made by Char-Broil. Made to hang ribs.
Q:
How much does it weigh?
Answer: I'm estimating 45 lbs. It is easy to lift with the two handles on the side. I have mine on a small wheeled moving cart I bought at Harbor Freight. I roll it to the side when not in use. When in use, I roll it to the edge of my covered patio. It never gets rained on, and I never have to carry it.
Answer: Just guessing about 25 - 30 lbs. maybe.
Answer: Maybe 25-30lbs
Answer: I think it’s about 65lbs but it’s very lite and easy to move around
Answer: maybe 18-20lbs at most
Answer: I would say in the neighborhood of about 30lbs
Q:
Do you think a silicone pan can be used in the roasting area to cook a casserole?
Answer: No , it still has flame and gets very hot . It’s not like a microwave
Q:
When you are cooking/smoking baby back ribs in the Big Easy is the lid open or closed? Not clear in the manual.
Answer: I keep my close, it cooks faster and smoke better...
Answer: I have it closed to keep the smoke ok inside.
Answer: when smoking the lid should be closed as much as possible.
Answer: Closed
Q:
can ht eChar-Broil use pellets or wood chunks instead of chips?
Answer: No. It is a propane grill. There is a little metal sleeve that opens on the exterior side that you can put wood chips in to flavor food.
Answer: I have used cherry chunks but never pellets, They work fine. I always soak in water for a few hours before putting them in so they burn slower
Answer: Neither, it uses propane unless you are talking about the smoker box. You can use whatever will provide the flavor you want. Pellets might actually start to burn, don't provide flavor.
Answer: I have used both wood pellets and chips they work find, I have not used chunks.
Answer: Yes you can use either one..
Q:
Safety question: Is it normal to hear a gas sound coming from inside the big easy once it is fired up? I did check for gas leaks and found none.
Answer: Yeah I definitely hear the same thing. Not unlike the whoosh you hear on the gas grill just a little more noticeable from the big easy since it's a cylinder shape with just a few heat ports around the top. I think as long as you used soapy water around the connections and saw no bubbles you should be ok. Plus leaking unburned gas you would smell. We love our big easy!
Answer: Are you using an excessive amount of gas? If not, and your leak-check came out OK, you're probably fine. We haven't noticed any unusual sounds of gas or air leaking out. Have you contacted Char-Broil? Their customer service is quite good.
Answer: I'm not an expert, but I haven't noticed any sort of gas leak sounds coming from mine when it's lit. Could it be your yank is cold or low on propane? Sometimes that can cause some noises.
Answer: Yes. The sound is present the entire time you have gas on (even during cooking).
Answer: It was exactly what I was looking for and the only reason why I ordered it from Amazon.
Q:
can you add a thermometer to lid?
Answer: The lid is not able to support a temperature gauge. For the best results we recommend using the meat thermometer included to monitor the internal temperature of your food.
Q:
Does the smoker come assembled?
Answer: No, I was very overwhelmed at how many pieces there were when I first opened it. But soon learned it's very, very easy to assemble. Also packed extremely well.
Answer: There is some assemble but not many. It is a great smoker. You can do some anythings with it.
Answer: Yes it does and it is a great smoker, use it all the time.
Answer: No it requires assembly
Answer: Unfortunately no it does not, the instructions are ok though a bit tenuous
Answer: No, it does not. However, it was not difficult to put together.
Q:
Should I soak the wood chips beforehand? Or does this depend on the density of the meat, soak for turkey but not ribs? Thanks!
Answer: No. The wood chips do not need to be soaked before the cook. Soaking will prolong the time it takes for the wood chips to begin smoking. Visit Char-Broil's site for tons of Big Easy cooking tips and recipes.
Answer: Haven’t used for turkey, or any poultry really. But No. I do not soak the chips.
Answer: The instructions say not to soak wood chips as this prolongs the smoking time. Since the chips start smoking by indirect heat, you start the smoking on high temperature, leave for ~15 minutes and then turn the temperature down to low according to the instructions.
Answer: I usually don't soak the chips. But, this weekend I am going to, to smoke some ribs. So don't know yet.
Q:
The add states 9000 to 18000 btus, and infra-red capability, i was under the impression infra-red cooks hotter? is this unit 1 burner up to 18000 btus
Answer: This unit is adjustable from 250 degrees up to high 400 hundreds best grill I have ever had use it all the time and the price is very reasonable. Don't no about BTUs but It cooks great .
Answer: I am not sure. The burner runs around the bottom outside of a large stainless steel drum that fits inside the grill. It burns very hot and mostly on high. I use it mainly for roasting because it does such a nice job of Browning the meat, but there is a learning curve do to the high roast temperature. I especially like to team it up with roasts that I have.cooked to the perfect Internal temprature in a sous vide cooker. Then I brown it in the big easy. Hope this helps.
Product reviews of Char-Broil The Big Easy TRU-Infrared Smoker Roaster & Grill + Cover
The Big Guy : Outstanding Roaster, Pretty Good Grill, Meh Smoker
This is my third Big Easy! First one was great, but I used the heck out of it. The second one was not so good and could not come up to the right temperature that I wanted. Both were the basic Big Easy units.
So I tried again and this time, this product hit the jackpot!
Pros: Almost a "set it and forget it" cook. Chicken is done is about 45-50 minutes, tender, juicy. I do NOT cook the whole chicken, but only the parts. Legs and thighs below, breasts on the top with either an electronic temp probe or the all in one manual one. When the breasts are done, I take them out and cook the dark meat about 5 -10 minutes longer. Perfect!
The unit will function as a grill. I used an IR temp probe and got the top grill up to 535 degrees, hot enough for most meats. However, I use my Weber grill for searing (gets up to 750 degrees.
Cons: Surface area for grilling is small, compared to a regular grill, but may work for some people. The "smoker" feature is a stretch. This is NOT a true smoker. I have a Weber Smokey Mountain smoker specifically for smoking meats. However, the ability to add SOME smoke to my meats with this unit is a plus.
The other con is that the assembly directions are quite rudimentary and a good thing I had previous experience with Big Easys, but it still took me 1.5 hours to put together.
All in all, this unit is a valuable, flexible addition to my Weber grill and Weber smoker
Randy : 3 1/2 stars, worked great, but...
Did a 14lb turkey and it worked great. I was looking at 2.5 hours and it probably could have been pulled at 2 hours. Turkey was done, skin was crispy, and I used NO OIL at all. BUT... I'm a little disappointed in the workmanship/design of the entire unit. Everything just doesn't seem to fit together in a seemless way. And if you're getting this to use as a smoker, don't bother. The smoker box is really small, which means repeated refills during cooking, and my box actually jammed on me the first time I tried to pull it off, couldn't get it off or completely back on. Again, shoddy workmanship, and a little disappointed in that. But, as a roaster, for the money, worked great and should last a while, but left with the feeling that I have to be very gentle with it. NOT a commercial/industrial piece of equipment.
Al in SoCal : Great! Got it last week mostly to cook turkey ...
Great! Got it last week mostly to cook turkey for Thanksgiving, but in this short time I bought 2 bunk baskets and have cooked: tri-tip roast, large chicken breasts w/ potatoes, and ribs. Mine came with rib hooks, but I'm not sure that is included with this all the time. There is a ton of great demos on youtube for those of you that like to see how before you try. My tri-tip came out excellent - it was in the hanging basket near the top.
* Note that food near the top cooks much faster than the bottom. So if you have multiple items cooking make sure you put the items that take longer closer to the top.
* Also - don't worry about cleaning it like crazy. From the instructions when done cooking turn on high for 10 minutes to evaporate the leftover grease, etc. Hooray!
Also if you are interested in getting the cover - I saved like 5 bucks by getting the Abba Patio Outdoor/Porch Barbeque/ BBQ Grill Cover, Water-repellent and Fire Resistant, All Weather Protection, Tan Color, Kettle-Style, Large - works GREAT!
Barbara Gibbes : Meat fall off the bone tender
I was watching The Shopping Network one day and watched an infomercial about the Charbroil Big Easy Grill. My husband loves to cook outside and this grill which could grill, smoke, cook seafood looked fantastic. It wasn't as expensive as the Green Egg so if it was a total bust that was OK. The grill was fairly easy to assemble.
I wish I had taken pictures of all the things we've cooked on the Big Easy!! Tonight we smoked a whole chicken. The skin was caramel colored and crispy and the meat was beyond tender!!! The meat literally fell off the bone. Our pork roasts turn out the same way... crispy skin and fall apart tender meat. Just follow the directions that come with this grill/smoker.
We r VERY happy w our purchase!!
R. M. : Hands down the easiest and great tasting cooker
5 years ago my boss made turkey for our christmas luncheon in the smaller big easy fryer. I was so impressed i bought one on my way home using some of my christmas bonus money.
A week later i was cooking my first turkey ever in my life using that fryer and everyone loved the juicy taste. I've been a fan ever since.
No messing with gallons of oil and risk of fire. Versatile cooking options for making everything from vegetables to turkey to spare ribs and roasts.
Now i've upgraded to the larger smoker roaster grill which has not dissapointed.
Love the fact that i can do a 20lb turkey now (compared to the smaller 12-14lb limit i had before) plus it has a grill top to add a little portability and versatility to my grilling options. Still lots to try with smoking, but i know it will be fun... Good tasting... And EASY!
I cannot recommend these big easy oilless fryers enough. You get alot of bang for your buck and crank out some delicious foods.
The Karkars : I've already used it and love it. Friends of ours that own this have ...
This thing is a monster, pictures do not do this unit justice. I've already used it and love it. Friends of ours that own this have said nothing but great things about it and I can see and taste why. "You can't mess things up, even if you tried", they said. Time is not key when cooking, temperature is. I am glad I purchased the SRG (Smoker, Roaster & Grill) over the normal Big Easy. Super versatile especially with the 22-Piece Turkey Fryer Accessory Kit.
Pros:
Easy to assemble... Some assembly required but it was fun and a snap doing so. Most of it was already pre-assembled from the factory.
I ordered the Char-Broil Big Easy on Thursday and received it that Saturday. I wasn't expecting it until Tuesday of the following week, so just in time for Thanksgiving!
Cons:
None really... This thing is solid.
So far I've cooked boneless pork ribs, my wife didn't think I meant bone in but honestly, they came out great. I can't wait to actually throw in some actual beef/pork ribs in there. I'll have to come back to this review after we get a verdict on the turkey after Thanksgiving.
Also make sure to season the inside with vegetable oil before use, super important.
Jayce : I have used the Char-Broil Big Easy twice and the roaster has impressed me thus far
I have used the Char-Broil Big Easy twice and the roaster has impressed me thus far. The install was quite easy and intuitive, you don't need much mechanical background to assemble this unit. I ordered the accessory kit as well as the cover, and they all were delivered promptly. With the accessory kit you will find your options for cooking different foods are endless. I have noticed that after close to five hours of use, this unit does not consume much propane. As many other reviewers have mentioned, the meat cooked from the Big Easy is very tender and the clean up process is super easy. Just follow the seasoning directions and you will be roasting in no time.
Wings : Replace your fryer, roaster and grill with this!
I was shopping for an alternative to deep frying turkeys at Thanksgiving. I looked at several options that claimed to "fry" without oil. I was skeptical of all of them but a friend recommended the Big Easy and it was cheaper than some of the other options. It seemed to me that this was just another "hot box" so I didn't see how it would be any different than cooking in an oven. Well it must be magic because everything I cook in it including turkeys comes out juicy and tasty! I did a side by side comparison between a turkey fried in oil and one cooked in the Big Easy. The Big Easy was just as moist and juicy as the fried. The taste was actually better as it didn't have an oily after taste. As a bonus you don't have the expense of gallons of oil and the messy clean up. I now use the Big Easy for almost everything: chicken breasts, pork roasts and tenderloins, baked potatoes, etc. The grill also works well and I have all but abandoned my large stand alone grill. The smoke box while it won't replace a dedicated smoker for serious hours long smoking it does an excellent job of adding smoke flavor to roasted and grilled foods. The Big Easy has essentially replaced my fryer, propane grill and partially replaced my smoker.
Steve : Worked great!
I'm writing this review a little early as I have only cooked one chicken in the Big Easy SRG. We roasted said chicken, it took about 2 hours. After about an hour and a quarter, I opened the lid to reduce the browning on the chicken. The bird came out tender and juicy. My big apprehension on purchasing the Big Easy was clean up. How bad is that going to be? Turned out to be a non-issue. I put some tin foil on the bottom of the tub with a drain hole, so when the cooking was done all I had to do was lift out the tin foil. I used a wire brush to clean off some baked on juices then re-seasoned the whole tub. Easier than cleaning my gas grill. Overall, I am very pleased so far and looking forward to smoking a turkey.
Update:
Since posting the above I have, roasted a turkey (came out moist and juicy with crispy skin), smoked thick pork chops (juicy with a light smoke flavor), smoked marinated lean pork kabobs (need a little more experimentation on this one), another chicken, Bubba burgers (this was a true test of how easy the clean up could be, cleaned much easier than my Q grill) and finally a couple smoked steaks (medium rare, good sear, mild smoke flavor) After using this SRG for a month, I'm very pleased with the results. It roasts better than a kitchen oven, grills better than my portable Q grill, and is a mediocre smoker. The ding on the smoking ability is most likely because it cooks hotter and quicker (lowest temperature is around 350 degrees) so the smoke really doesn't have the time to accumulate on the meat.
Oh, one follow-on note: You have to keep an eye on the juice level in the drip pan, if it over-fills it can be a mess to clean up.
Mary A : Rhe "NEW" way to Barbecue
For years I've been saying, "We should get a smoker", but I had a Charbroil Infrared that I loved. This summer the Infrared died and we made the move for the smoker. First time we used it we smoked a brisket. It was phenomenal. I recommend this highly for all your outdoor cooking adventures. Additionally, it is very portable. A++++
Roy B. : Worth every penny! You'll be glad you bought it!
I got this as an early birthday and Christmas present (they're the same day for me..) for myself and I couldn't be much happier! It was a snap to put it together.
I have fried turkeys for Thanksgiving for about 20 years and they're great, but I was kind of tired of the mess and buying oil for one or two uses. So, I decided to give this bad boy a try.
Of course, I couldn't wait to use it. First thing I did was "beer can chicken." Didn't even bother with the beer can. Just found some tips for cooking time, seasoned the bird, loaded up the wood chip holder, and fired it up. Came out GREAT! My wife loved it. Best home cooked chicken we've had in awhile. Crispy skin. Moist and tender meat and a great smokey flavor.
I just finished doing pork ribs tonight. It could not have been easier. Again, I found a recipe online that looked good. Maybe not the best ribs I've ever eaten, but absolutely the best I've ever made and they were delicious! A few crispy parts that I love, but also falling off the bone tender.
I can't wait for Thanksgiving! Just to be sure, I'm giving it a trial run with a smaller turkey this weekend, but I know it's going to be awesome!
Clean up is a little tedious, but not nearly what it was dealing with 3 gallons of oil. Also, I gave it 3 stars on temperature control b/c there's really no way to gauge it. I've seen several things that said always run it on high. That's what I've done so far and it's worked out.
Awesome product!
Karen L Shea : wanted a smoker
You get a smoker, grill and so much more. Food tastes great, size is so compact, but room is deceiving, it's huge inside. We love it, smoked a turkey, smoked a ham and a chicken, fast and yummy. We have a large gas grill, which is no longer being used. Love it, recommend to everyone, My brother-in-law has 3 of them. Price is amazing..
Jami Buckner Quinn : Great grill
This is our second grill. We actually wore out first one after 5yrs of almost daily use. Hits 600 degrees within 20min. And we live in a cold climate! Easy to clean. The rotisserie part of grill is fantastic. As far as cleaning the metal basket? Ammonia and Dawn detergent sprayed on basket. Sit for few min. Wipes clean as new.

sammy : ... smoked my first rack of ribs on the Big Easy Smoker, Roaster
Just smoked my first rack of ribs on the Big Easy Smoker, Roaster, Grill! They were perfect with just the right amount of hickory smoke. Let me add that I've been using the smaller Big Easy for over 4 yrs. and was highly impressed with it except one couldn't smoke ribs and my favorite, turkey breasts, on it.
I actually have 2 of the small Big Easy's and on Holidays I use them both as we have 5 married children and 12 grandkids to cook for. They've always have done an adequate job and still do. What I really like about the Smoker/Roaster/Grill is that it has a heat control for high, medium, low and that works so well for getting the wood chips to smoke and also for grilling.
Read a lot of reviews and a few complaints that the S/M/G doesn't have an outside temp. gauge. For me that's a non-issue and I can see how it would be misleading temperature readings if it did. Ribs take 55-60 minutes on either grill so for ribs, chicken parts, pork steak & chops all I need is my watch to time it. Put them on and walk away and do something else during that time. When doing whole turkeys, turkey breasts, whole loins, and roasts I simply use the temperature probe into these meats.
For the money and the end results with either of the Big Easy's I just don't think there's anything better.
B : Great bbq
While this might not be the best bbq or the best smoker, it's a great mod range solution for those of us who like to dabble in both but aren't looking to be master cooks. I bought some highly rated wood pellets for the smoker and it works great. I've tried those little smoker boxes in a traditional bbq and have never been impressed. With this one, you can actually taste the difference. It also does a great job roasting a chicken. For the price, I highly recommend this bbq!!
JC : Flexible
We have really enjoyed this cooker. We have tried about everything except smoking brisket on it including corn on the cob. It heats very uniformly and even better than our large Char Broil Tru-Infrared grill does. We plan to take it on our next long camping trip even though it is much heavier than our Roadtrip.
This product is great for cooking burgers and chicken without having to worry every second about burning and flames. BBQ'd chicken breasts come out perfect along with pork roast and ribs.
The only way I could improve it is by being able to quickly break it down to fit in the bed of the truck under our fiver.
Android Power User : Easy to assemble and use
Easy to assemble and use. I have made some chicken and a bacon wrapped porkloin so far and both came out amazing.
Assembly:
I used locktite on ALL screws. I also removed existing screws and put locktite on them. I do not recommend using an electric drill as some of the screws may strip out the holes. Use a hand screwdriver so you can control the torque.
Break in:
Before cooking in the kettle you need to burn off the oils used to protect the metals. I recommend a slow burn in by selecting the lowest flame setting for about 15 min. If your kettle comes with the top grill, make sure that is installed.during the burn in and the lid stays closed as well. After 15 min, turn up the heat to max and run it for 5 more min before shutting it down and opening the lid to vent out the smells.
CLEANING:
Keeping the inner stainless steel cylinder clean is important. Its easily removed and cleaned with soap and water. Same for the grease trap. The basket is a pain to clean. I have tried spraying PAM to keep food from sticking...it helped a little. All in all its not too bad.
Temp control:
The temperature is easy to control if you use a temperature sensor to monitor the internal temps. Adjustments should be made in small increments to get to your desired level. Keeping the lid closed is key, so a wireless temp probe is the only way to go. I use the ThermoPro TP20 and it is amazing!
I mostly cook with wood or charcoal, but this Charbroil Big Easy is impressive and so easy to use.
Jami Buckner Quinn : Great grill

Kara : Too HOT and uncontrollable
The temperature is close to impossible to control. It cooks at extremely high heat, even with the control knob at its lowest setting. I kept a close eye on the three briskets I tried to slow smoke but all three cooked extremely fast and burnt to a crisp. The smoker box did a poor job at keeping the pellets ignited and the only way to get them going again is to turn up the heat. Very disappointing!
Carol : Great smoker for the novice. Read more about how to make cleanup easy!
This is a great cooker/smoker for the novice smoker. The main issue I have with this bbq is the cleanup afterwards. If you do not line the bottom with tin foil, the grease/fat cooks and hardens to the bottom which makes cleanup a mess. What I've come across is that the bottom plate in Cameron's "Beer Can Roaster - Stainless Steel Chicken Beeroaster Deluxe with Recipe Guide" fits perfectly in the cylindrical metal contraption you put inside the bbq. You then put a metal layer (2 come with the metal cylinder so you can rest meat in separate compartments in the cylinder) right above the metal plate from the beer can roaster and the fat on your food drips right into the metal plate! Cleanup is super easy this way. The beer can roaster is a great addition just for the plate.

Stephen : Awesome grill/smoker
I've used this grill for about three months now, and it's been great! I'm a novice cook at best, but I've turned out some unbelievably good ribs, pork tenderloin, pork butt (pulled pork barbecue), chicken breast, steaks, pork chops, wings, bacon, sausage, and tons of vegetables (baked potatoes especially). This grill makes outdoor cooking easy and fun, without a lot of the the inconvenience and hassle. I also like that it doesn't take up much space on our patio. I have enjoyed it so much, I've bought several of the accessories to go along with it. I have had so many compliments about the food, especially the tenderloins and smoked chicken breast. The smoker feature adds a great taste too any meat you cook. I also like the grill top, so I can still use it to cook steaks, burgers, etc. I didn't think I would use that feature but I have a lot. I haven't used my other grill since I got this one, because it does everything I need. I'm looking forward to trying a turkey this thanksgiving. The assembly wasn't too bad, took about an hour and a half. Do yourself a favor and pick up a digital thermometer, and you'll be grilling and smoking to perfection very soon. Can't say enough good things about this product! You'll have a lot of fun trying out different wood flavors that go along with different cuts and types of meat. The smell of the wood smoke is awesome!
Keane : Simple, easy to use grill, roaster, smoker that won't break the bank
I purchased this product for thanksgiving and was not disappointed. In fact, my whole family was not disappointed either. I purchased it early to allow me some time to get familiar with the product and started off with chicken which turned out better than any chicken i have purchased. Next i tried a beer can chicken and the results were even better. Lastly, i roasted a 16lb turkey for thanksgiving and will continue to use the device for this going forward.
I still like to use my Charcoal Weber grill for steaks, hot dogs, brats, chicken breasts and kebabs. But this device is for anything that needs to be roasted or smoked, like whole chicken, whole turkey, pork ribs, roast beef, pork tenderloin, etc. Why? Because the infrared cooking of this device keeps the meats moist, even with lots of fat run off.
I use the smoker box frequently to add a bit of extra flavor to my BBQ meals, but it also works great for everyday chickens/turkeys too.
Due to the ease and versatility of this device, i will buy another one in a heart beat if it ever broke.
will in jax : Must Buy!!!
This thing is awesome. There is no need to know temperature in the chamber, just the food so buy a good remote probe thermometer. I kept looking for times and such for recipes and found nothing specific and that’s because you don’t need it. Just put the meat in the basket and turn it on and walk away until your thermometer alarm sounds. Best tasting roasted chicken ever!

Iris Jones : Amazing!
This is by far the best cooking tool I own! I roasted a 10 lb pork shoulder in under 3 hours and a 7 lb whole chicken in under an hour! Both were tender and juicy beyond anything I could have achieved by roasting in my oven or grilling! I am IN LOVE with this thing!!
Update: I have owened this majical contraption for 7 months now and I cannot be happier. I have smoked a briaket to perfection, made delicious fish, smoked ribs, wonderful roasted chicken and about anything else you could think of. I want to add pictures but this app will not let me.
UPDATE 22June2017: YEARS later, I still use this thing at least a few times a week. It sits on my back porch and it still works great. I love it!
Beth and John : Love it after only a few hours, very well built!
The basket is too weak - I need a new one after 6 months, I just wish they sold a basket separately.
Took a while to assemble it correctly and I got it wrong at first but the first turkey was very good despite the mistake -- the second one is perfect! Wish I had bought one of these years ago. Can't wait to try some kabobs. It is also a grill and broke some limbs off one of out many apple trees so the second turkey is also smoked.
Something strange, NOT related to the smoker - I've been cooking for 40 years so I know how to place a thermometer and I tried both their thermometer supplied with the roaster and my own thermometer and both read about 140-145 degrees but the bird looked pretty well done and I pulled it then. The turkey was completely cooked and very moist despite the thermometer reading so I caution you that waiting until the thermometer reaches 165 the bird will probably be much overcooked. Of course if there is any sign of red you need to cook further. Again, this is nothing reflecting on the cooker which is great.
UPDATE using the optional parts I made kabobs today and at low setting the smoke (limbs from one of our apple trees) they got very smoky by the time the meat was cooked. Worked great, although kabobs almost never come out even. Since we like the veggies underdone it was perfect although most people will probably want to pre-cook the veggies a couple minutes in the microwave. Also put a big chunk of the pork tenderloin on one of the skewers and it came out nicely also. Of course everything was marinated first.
David J. : Don’t buy one!!!
Poor quality...screws don’t properly fit causing the handles and anything attached to the cooker itself to be loose...no explanation on what the right control knob is supposed to do...grease collection tray doesn’t fit properly in the grooves or slots...too narrow...requested a new one...was sent the same size one...they discontinued making this model...understandably so...won’t light by using the built in igniter...overall a regrettable purchase...
Lil Irish princess : My BBQ BFF!!!!!
I rave about my awesome multi-faceted grill all the time!!! I LOVE to grill... I will grill in December in the snow in fact! But this is SO much more than just a grill. I bought it before Thanksgiving so I could be very brave and try a new way of doing the Bird. Well first I will say my I tipped my hat to my new grill after I made the most amazing turkey ever! Cooked crazy fast, perfectly juicy, visually stunning and just the right crispness on the skin. But this thing stole my BBQ'ing princess heart when I realized just how versatile it was. It's a TRU-infrared, you can cook any piece of meat inside it, on top of it on the grill grate and you can also smoke your meat or just add smoker chips for flavor. Last but not least.... The size!! It's less than half the size of my previous propane grills, which you have ever lived in an apartment with one, you know you usually have to sacrifice close to half you balcony or porch to have one. This is short and round and takes up hardly any space, and it still has PLENTY of cooking surface and space.
New In Shrink Reviews : Often called the best purchase we've ever made
If I had to right now, I would buy a brand new one of these to replace my existing one without question. We love it that much.
I've done turkeys up to 26lbs in this thing or something as simple as the pictures here and just chicken wings. Briskets, roasts, tenderloins, you name it we've done it. Works as a great just hamburger, steak, corn, porkchop grill as well with the grill on it.
The small smoker box does need your attention pretty regularly to refill but that's not a problem for me usually. Typically we are outside hanging around with friends and are sitting or standing nearby anyways while things are cooking.
It's almost hard to overcook something when using the basket, the way it heats and cooks food really gives you a lot of wiggle room if you're not great with grilling or roasting/smoking things. And you can actually very easily overload it with way too much stuff and everything will still cook evenly if things are the same size.
It's kind of heavy to tote around with you, but we often throw it in the back of the truck and take it camping with us.
Almondo : Mostly like, but....
Since the day I got this, sometimes when I lite it I can't get a full flame. I learned that if I disconnected from the tank and re-connected, for some reason it usually fixed it. The other day, no matter what I did, I couldn't get a full flame. I came to realize that the plastic knuckle you tighten to the tank had separated from the gas probe, so it isn't pushing the connector into the tank enough to let a full flow of gas. Evidently that's been loose since the day I received the unit and finally is so loose it won't make an adequate connection. Very disappointing.
The unit does best at doing meat down inside rather than using the grill like a regular barbeque. The grill is difficult to keep clean because is has such small slits in it. Doing a whole chicken or anything down inside is great.
Mike Dombrowski : many parts but easy to assemble. work fanstastic
Our first infrared cooker. Cooked the Thanksgiving turkey with apple wood chips. Was amazing. Kept the temp medium high so the smoke would be heavy - as result Turkey finished 30 minutes earlier than calculated. Required two batches of apple wood - roughly 1.5 cups each time. I used a remote grill thermometer - the included thermometer was not even close to accurate. In the end it was the best Turkey we have ever had. Injected the turkey with 16oz of Tony Chachere's Injectable Butter Marinade then Rubbed turkey with light coat of vegetable oil and dropped it in. No fuss - fantastic results. Make sure to foil the drip pan and use the drippings with boiled stock from the giblets to make a nice gravy. I also put a layer of foil on the bottom of the cage and pocked holes in it so the drippings could fall through. As a result had no clean up to deal with.
William Vanderoef : Working well.
For a small smoker / Grill / roaster this is a great unit to own. Cooks fantastic. Cleaning is a pain as the basket and grill plate needs to be cleaned in the kitchen sink but I give both the Smoker and Grilling a 10. Meats come out with a fantastic smoke taste and are much more moisture then expected. Can cook 3 16oz steaks... Can kind of squeeze a 4th one on if needed. Basket is large enough to cook two standard chickens at once.
Greg B. : Read the Instructions Carefully!
This has to be the best overall grill/smoker/roaster (they actually call it the SRG) I've ever used. You must read and follow the assembly instructions. 1. Coat all stainless and aluminum surfaces with vegetable oil before the first use. I used a spray on veg. oil and wiped it smooth with a paper towel. Coat the cylinder inside and out and the bottom WELL. If you don't it will eventually rust through. Also I coated the heat shield and all the other aluminum inerds as well before firing it up the first time. Then I turned it on high for about 30 minutes with the lid closed. This is similar to seasoning cast iron. It seals it up where it won't rust. Most of your grilling and roasting will be done lid open and with NO sauces until very near the end. The infrared heating caramelizes any sugars very quickly so if you coat your meat with BBQ sauce before cooking it will burn very badly. But don't close the lid either until the very end to inject a little extra heat. Also, get the accessories! They are great! The rib hangers, K-bob rods, shelves for the basket all work well. They even make a chicken leg rack from which you can hang numerous legs while either roasting them or smoking. I have the best Turkey, Ribs, Burgers, you name it off this thing. Nearly impossible to burn your meat (with the lid open, did I say that already?) Anyway, I have bought two for myself (to get more cooking surface and be able to smoke a ham and turkey simultaneously) and one for each of my boys. The most economical and best tasting grill/food you will ever get. I take mine apart and scrub the cylinder and re-season annually. Good grillin'!!
Taty Z Dancer : Will update later
So far so good, but we did not try to cook a whole chicken or turkey in it and we did not try to smoke anything. We did grill lamb chops and burger patties and corn and veggies and it worked well.
Assembly was not fun, it comes pretty much with ALL parts apart and my boyfriend was not happy having to spend ah hour putting it together. But overall it is pretty decent (wait till we try smoking anything, lol) and my boyfriend likes it (it was his birthday gift).

Keith G. : Great roaster, smoker and grill - NOT for low and slow
This is a great grill. The grill area might be tight for more than 3 depending on what you are grilling. I read all the reviews about "smoking" and heat control, and must clarify the issue. If you want "smoke" this thing will definately give you smoke, using wood chips or pellets. If you use pellets, a few may fall out the smoke release holes, but not a big deal. What this grill will NOT DO is cook low and slow. You cannot turn the gas flow down far enough to keep the heat low, and you cannot get enough heat from the smoke basket to cook. I more or less solved this by buying a a different gas line - and a few extra brass fittings to fit the valve - that has an in-line flow valve so I could reduce the gas flow with greater control. I can grill or roast as usual, and also manage my temp down to farily steady 200-225 degrees for slow cooking.
Slow Hand Dave : A hassle to put together but a nice multifunction cooking tool
It took me 45 minutes and a phone call to Char-Broil just to find the assembly "instructions", which are really just sketchy diagrams. It took me 1 hour 45 minutes to assemble it and then when I was all done I found the real assembly instructions in the Amazon product support section. If I had had the real instructions it probably would have been a much quicker assembly. The grease tray that came with is too small and it appears to be for a smaller grill. It is not wide enough to sit on the rails so I have it resting on the bottom "windshield". It is not big enough to cover the opening so there are gaps around it. When I called Amazon support they said I could return the entire grill for a replacement or refund but they could not just send a new, right-sized grease tray. The other option is to take a $100 credit so I did that and will go to Char-Broil to try to get the right part. I've only used it once so far but I'm very pleased with the sturdiness and versatility as well as the ease of use.
Wings : Replace your fryer, roaster and grill with this!
Piper M. Webb : Great grill/smoker combo
Best smoker ever for wings! Whole chickens and turkeys turn out well too. Make sure you keep it covered or the elements (rain, in particular) will cause issues. Our first one lasted a few years, but we didn't keep it protected from the weather and had to buy another one. Otherwise, we've really enjoyed both the smoker and the grill (it's nice to throw some smoke on a burger or steak now and then). Oh, one last thing...if you want to cook low and slow, this might not be the best choice. We had to use a piece of rebar to hold the lid open to keep the temperature down. It stays around 350 degrees at its lowest without some manual intervention, so it's not ideal for long cooks at a steady low temperature.
Browniiis : Fantastic Griller, Smoker!
Bought one of these to give it a try, so glad i did. We’ve cooked while chickens, large chicken breasts, wings, legs, thoughts, ham slices, steaks , burgers, & more. We’ve experimented with different smoke chips, & rubs, and we are very pleased with it. We bought some additional accessories and a cast iron flat top It was easy to assemble, took about 35 mins. The price is excellent! We loved it so much we bought a second one for my daughters and her family. We bought a wireless digital temperature probe which i recommend. Everything cooks perfect and is so juicy. We had recently purchased a 3 burner grill just before buying this unit and haven’t used the grill since buying the 3 in 1.
PB&J : We had the original Big Easy and used it until after so many years
We had the original Big Easy and used it until after so many years, we wore it out literally. Purchased this one in time for Thanksgiving and followed the instructions we found on a youtube video. This was by far the best turkey we've ever put on the table in our 30+ years of family Thanksgivings! So easy, we simply thawed the turkey, sprayed the turkey with veggie oil, sprinkled on our favorite seasoning (with no sugar added to prevent burning), put the turkey in the basket and cooked without the lid until the last 30 min. approximately based on weight. Even the wings were golden brown and didn't scorch or burn. Infrared frying at the very best and we can't wait to use this on ribs, chicken, prime rib, and so much more! It pays for itself in 2 turkeys as far as we're concerned based on the cost of peanut oil, calories saved, clean up, and safety!!
Seester : Impressed with the well-designed broiler/roaster but do NOT buy the accessory kit
The parts in the box arrived in very good condition, with excellent and thorough packaging. Nothing was bent, scratched, or missing. The assembly instructions were clear, and all the parts are solid and fit well together. Nothing chintzy about the design or manufacturing. Nicely written Product Guide and product usage booklet.
I used peanut oil, at the recommendation of numerous other reviewers, for the seasoning. The instructions said to wipe down the inside of the chamber with vegetable oil and then run on high until the smoke stops. That took about 15 minutes, and I only achieved a light bronzing on the top half of the chamber, and the flat surface at the very bottom still had uncooked oil. So I repeated the process two more times, with unit cool down and re-oiling in between each seasoning session. I ran it about 45 minutes or so for the second and third session, and finally got some light bronzing on the bottom surface, at least the outer half. Definitely a vertical temperature profile within the chamber.
Later we roasted two turkey breasts on the wire grate which I had placed about one-third of the way up from the bottom of the roaster basket. The tops of the breasts browned nicely, but the bottom sides did not brown at all. (We had pre-coated the pieces with peanut oil). So I turned the pieces over for the last 15 minutes or so. (That wasn't very easy since the pieces were stuck to the grating). Maybe I should pre-oil the grating surfaces, too. Each piece was just under 3 lbs, so we expected the roasting time to be about 30 minutes. It ended up taking closer to 60 minutes. I think much of that was caused by our taking the meat straight out of the refrigerator (about 35 degrees F), rather than allowing the meat to sit at room temperature for a while before cooking. Also, next time I will place the meat near the top for faster and more even cooking.
Afterward, we ran the unit on high, lid down, for about 30 minutes to burn the drippings on the bottom surface. I haven't yet gone out to brush out the black debris stuck on the bottom, so I can't comment on how easy or hard that will be. LATER: it was easy to brush out with a hard plastic brush.
Overall, the unit is very solid, well-engineered and fun to use. With the IR technology, it is very different than any outside roaster/broiler I have ever used, so I think I just need to learn the fine techniques, which I look forward to doing.
Also LATER: the accessory kit that sells with it separately arrived a few days later. But none of round pieces have the same diameter as the cooker. They are smaller by about 2-3". So do NOT buy that accessory kit; you will only have to return it. Why Amazon hasn't fixed this for quite some time befuddles me.
TJ : Truly fantastic, but sadly discontinued by Char-Broil. Get it while you can.
It exactly what I thought it would be. I tell people it's not the best at any of the 3 functions, but it does them all really well. I've been using it to roast/smoke whole chickens and trays of wings mostly. Grills nice too as you can add some smoke to the burgers or what ever else you are grilling. I smoked a 3 lb chuck roast on LOW for 2.5 hours and my family loved it. Normally they don't like roast from a crock pot or oven. This was tender, smokey, and had a nice crust on the outside. Many Youtube videos to watch for recipes and ideas. I highly recommend getting a probe-type digital thermometer to go with it. Many on Amazon for <$30.
