Questions about Westinghouse Food Dehydrator, Beef Jerky Maker, Food Preservation Device, Food Dehydration Machine, Dried Fruits and Vegetables Maker, Countertop Small Kitchen Appliance, WFD101W, White
Q:
how many watts does this use?
Answer: 245 W
Q:
Does the lower wattage dehydrator work as well as the higher wattage dehydrator?
Answer: Not precisely sure and I imagine the wattage is based on both heat and fan speed. This dehydrator gets plenty hot and has a lot of air movement. I've done fruit, jerky, veggies, and more. It works very well.
Q:
What's the max height of the food that I can put in for each tray?
Answer: For myself, I wouldn't put anything in larger than 1/2" or so. This dehydrator isn't the most efficient in terms of air flow (apparently, you need a square or rectangular dehydrator for that, as all the trays get air flow simultaneously instead of it going up a column, with the top tray receiving the least air), and I had grape tomato halves that took almost 48 hrs. to dry as opposed to the 16 my dehydrator book recommended. They were certainly less than 1/2" thick, although they did have skins on. Hope this helps.
Q:
Mine seems to be clicking a lot so is that normal? Assuming it's the temperature control that is cycling a lot like every 6-7 seconds.
Answer: Sorry...bought is as a gift so I am not sure how it's working...have not heard any complaints
Q:
can you dehydrate herbs easily?
Answer: No it not worth it get a Excalibur one ,we return this ...stayed on 22 hours still couldn't Dehydrate a wet napkin stay away from this
Answer: I'm sure you can with proper instructions. I dehydrate home made dog biscuits only, at this time.
Answer: Very easily! I make beef jerky in about 8 hours. Fresh basil, oregano, rosemary etc will probably take less than 2 hours. If that.
Answer: yes
Q:
the trays seem to have holes how do you make things like fruit leather?
Answer: You can buy silicone mats that you spread the fruit pulp on and then place them on the trays. I'm not sure if Westinghouse has official ones, but I know you can find generic ones here on Amazon.
Answer: I've never made fruit leather. I make home made dog biscuits
Q:
Does this model have a fan?
Answer: Yes. Heat and fan . Works really well, But, don't put it in the dishwasher, not even top rack...the trays shrink.
Answer: yes
Answer: I do not have this model, so I do not know. But the WFD201W does. And, I feel that the rectangle shape give you more area and is easier to store. It has a timer that makes it convenient to turn on and forget it. I would recommend it.
Q:
What fruit leather liquid tray do you use with this product?
Q:
Can you buy additional racks?
Answer: Additional racks are not available
Answer: Not that I've been able to find.
Q:
can I use this dehydrator to dry herbs (basil, sage, chives, etc.) from my garden?
Q:
Can you use it to dry mushrrom?
Answer: Yes
Q:
is this 50/60 cycle?
Answer: 60
Q:
Where can i get extra trays for this dehydrator? wfd101w i mean... i broke one of mine xd
Answer: I'm sorry I return it as soon as I got it because it felt like it would break easy.
Q:
Can this be used to make yogurt chips ?
Answer: I only use mine for drying empty shell cases, part of my ammo reloading process, works great for that.
Answer: YES
Q:
Does it come with replacement trays and liners?
Answer: No extra trays or liners.
Answer: no
Answer: No
Q:
Where do i find the fruit leather trays or liners for this
Answer: I bought the liners on amazon. It did no good cause the trays broke or melted every time I used it.
Answer: Came with it. I bought it on Amazon.
Q:
Is it good for chicken breasts?
Answer: yes but not very thick
Q:
Does this BPA Free? Thanks.
Answer: YES
Answer: Would love to try it
Q:
Will this work to dehydrate salad/smoothie greens (spinach, kale, lettuce, chard, etc)? If so how long will the dehydrated leaves last?
Q:
Is this unit ul/etl/met/etc. listed?
Q:
Is it 50/60 cycle?
Q:
are the holes in the tray small enough that nuts like almonds and pecans won't fall through?
Answer: This was a gift
Answer: Sadly, no. I routinely dehydrate almonds and walnuts, and while the bigger nuts stay on the tray, the pieces fall to the bottom. I don't find it a big deal though. Most of the time they fall when I'm trying to scoop them up once they're done. I just let them fall and gather them from the bottom. I have to remove the trays to get to the food, and for cleaning, anyway.
Q:
Is it possible to make kale chips with this
Answer: yes
Q:
Pls could you tell me if it’s work with 220volts as I live out of US
Q:
Could you use it for insects for reptile consumption ?
Answer: Agree with the answer from "mpan". Their are air vents all over and something very small could fall through them. Also, when using more than one shelf, the top to bottom of each shelf is about 1 inch. Therefore, if it were something thicker than 1 inch, it would interfere with a shelf above.
Answer: Yes. If you want to dehydrate bugs it should work. If they are very small they could fall through the shelves though.
Q:
Where is this made from?
Answer: Made in China
Answer: Says Made in China. Hope this helps.
Q:
where can i buy the thermo fuse/cut off for this dehydrator? the numbers on it are (aupo bf133) and (tf 133c-271f)
Q:
What is the voltage on this dehydrator?
Answer: Required input voltage is standard 115/120 volts.
Answer: I don’t know where to find voltage, but I use it on my 110.
Answer: It uses standard household current of 120 volts.
Q:

Product reviews of Westinghouse Food Dehydrator, Beef Jerky Maker, Food Preservation Device, Food Dehydration Machine, Dried Fruits and Vegetables Maker, Countertop Small Kitchen Appliance, WFD101W, White
Amazon Customer : Works good but came in cracked
I like it works good easy to clean. I removed two stars because I noticed while I was cleaning before I used it there were cracks on each side of tray. At first I thought maybe it was just how its made but I looked closer they're all cracked. It still works good I guess. Just be sure to really look at it when you open it and make sure other pieces aren't broken .
Maureen Woods : Five Stars
A gift and he loves it
Stigmata : I was sorely disappointed. Getting an Excalibur instead
Don't buy this product. I tried to dehydrate bananas, and after 48 hours at the correct temp, I was sorely disappointed. Getting an Excalibur instead. More wattage.
Jennifer p. : Five Stars
Would buy again. It's really works
R. Latreille : We are very pleased with the performance of this unit
We used this item within hours of delivery. It actually worked beyond our expectations when we used the machine as described in the manual, which suggests changing the location of the shelves every few hours. We are very pleased with the performance of this unit.
nccollector1234 : Pleased with Purchase
Product arrived in good shape. Easy setup. Be sure to wash trays before first use. Different temperature options is a nice feature. Compared to another similar dehydrator I owned, this one seems to take a lot longer to dry herbs and some vegetables (hence, 4 stars). I've seen that with some other reviews, on hindsight. Overall, pleased with purchase.
J. Blackthorne : Exceptional 3D Printer Filament Dryer
This works very well as a 3D printer filament dryer once you clip holes into the inner baskets. I have dried PETG and ABS so far. Though, I intend to use it for Nylon as well. Google Youtube for complete instructions, but it is a quick and simple task to make this ready for filament use. Times are also published, but as a rule, I used 149 degrees for 4+ hours to dry PETG. You can tell when filament is damp because the prints will discolor and have little blowouts where steam has escaped and damaged the print. After drying, my same print went perfectly, proving that this Dehydrator works very well for 3D Printing use.
Trina W. : Easy to use.
This is my first dehydrator and I love it, green bell peppers, jalapenos, yellow bell peppers, and cilantro are just a few of the food's I have used my dehydrator for, I knew it would be work but I didn't think it would be as much fun. Sorry I don't have a photo or video.
Paul : Arcy, sparky, probably won't last... Definitely not worth more than $40
Temperature controller is basically bang-bang logic driving a relay, and it cycles a lot. The deadband is near zero, and it cycles several times a minute even at full temp soak mid-range.
I don't expect this thing to last very long because the relay opening at full load is so harsh you can see the arc flash through the plastic housing.
Assuming it is 50k cycles rated, at 3 cycles per minute, you're only going to get 11.5 days of runtime before it's dead.

BeachBrights : Simple Small Appliance at a Good Price Point
I am a cookbook author and just got done using this dehydrator solid for 4 days with a variety of different foods. Vegetables, fruits & meats all cooked as they should have and clean up was easy (well as easy as dried on food can be). This machine is noisy but I have yet to use a dehydrator that was not loud. I use my in the garage. Westinghouse rarely lets me down. They offer simple small appliances and low prices.
Nancy : Nice
Been using this for a while now and really like it. You do have to rotate the trays to get an even dryness
mpan : Good value for beginners.
I have used it several times. It does a good job on jerky and fruit. The temp adjustment is a nice feature on a low priced unit like this. It has good capacity. Not whisper quiet but not loud at all. It is light in weight but doesn't feel chincy. It is not a high end machine by any means but is a good value in it's class.
I will update after some time passes to speak on it's durability.
Jeffro1105 : Great Seller
As promised, perfect purchase
krys ben : It's perfect for making trail mix and maximizing storage of fruits ...
So far this has held up very well. It's perfect for making trail mix and maximizing storage of fruits and vegetables. My only "complaint" is that it has been impossible to find an affordable liquid tray for making fruit leather. Would buy again!
Amazon Customer : Like product a lot

TRL : Four Stars
Seems like it takes a long time.
Todd M. : It started a self destruct cycle that ended in a return.
First, I’m not knocking the product but merely pointing out that ours didn’t live up to expectorations and it could have been defective, damaged in shipping or it just has a poor thermostat design. Recently purchased with a “Return eligible through Oct 30, 2017” and though it did the job I’m concerned about the noise it’s making. There’s a clicking sound about every 5-6 seconds coming from the adjustable thermostat no matter what the temp setting is and that’s normally the sound you hear before it fails. We have electric baseboard heating in our home so every room has a wall thermostat and hearing that sound in one usually means you have a problem and it’ll need to be replaced. If it’s the contacts opening & closing so quickly it’s not a good thing and will likely cause it to fail sooner than later and it’s not like you can replace it as is the case with a wall thermostat. I asked a question about it on the product page and the only response was from someone who gave it as a gift. I’m assuming it’s defective because now the unit is overheating enough that some hairline imperfections in the sides of the trays have totally split into about a dozen full size cracks. It has sat in one place on the counter, no trays were in a dishwasher, the temp was never set over 140-degrees and it has been gently used. We dried grapes, tomatoes, onions & green peppers and all came out fine. We finally gave up on this unit and initiated a return and will buy one for substantially more to get one with metal trays and we’re done with the plastic. The Ronco this replaced had a thermostat that allowed the unit to overheat which led to cracked trays that eventually started to melt and/or warp. I have even seen a blue electric arch while rotating the thermostat to check it on other settings. It’s not an expensive unit, which is probably why Amazon shipped it with a label slapped onto the flimsy retail box rather than dropping it in a more secure box with some padding. Perhaps it took a beating in the UPS to USPS delivery route with such poor packaging and something was jostled and is now not performing as intended. I don’t like adding shipping comments in a review but that could be what caused it to deteriorate so quickly from a unit that seemed to work fine to one that was ready for a return within the next few days. Other reviewers have complained about the thermostat not going off so if you purchase this be sure to use upon receipt and don’t wait months past the window of opportunity to return it. It still dries but it’s overheating and it’s the plastic sides of all the trays are split top to bottom so in a matter of 3-weeks it went from 5-stars down to 2-star. We were prepared to keep it but all the trays cracking likely means they’ll have to be replaced and that would cost about what we paid for this one. I’ve now had two different units that have started to overheat and caused the trays to start to fail.
nick : Works
This thing is able to make jerky from meat. That is why I bought it.

I love it. But I just got it today, so I haven't used it yet. I make dog treats, so this will allow my customers to have a 2 week longer shelf life. I will get back with you if I have any question.
Dr. Livingston : Four Stars
SO FAR SO GOOD, DOES THE JOB OF DRYING BRASS. GOOD CHEAP ADDITION TO MY WET TUMBLING SETUP
Elgin : Perfect for drying 3D printer filament
This made an excellent filament dryer for my 3d printing filamenr. I just found a plastic flower pot (I think 2 gallon) to use as a lid... Take off all trays it came with , set filament on base, then place inverted flower pot on top as a lid, and you've got a print-dry filament dryer.
Paul : Arcy, sparky, probably won't last... Definitely not worth more than $40

Marvyn Galsim : The trays are horrible quality!!!
I had 3 of the 5 Trays crack on the sides and just fell through. I'm looking everywhere on the internet to find replacements but can only find that you would have to re-buy the entire unit. The unit is very is easy to use and withstand numerous usages but overall the unit and trays are horrible quality. I would pay up for a better dehydrator if I had to do it all over again.
Robert : It has been wonderful. It is quiet and works well
It has been wonderful. It is quiet and works well. Great deal.
Bones : cool looking dehydrator, clear shelves are nice but missing the fruit leather and small item trays but still quieter than others
This is a bit of a different unit than my other one. I have a Nesco as my main unit and having the clear sides on this one is pretty cool. You can more more easily watch and see what is going on and it helps to avoid the constant walk by and have to check on it attitude that I have with all the enclosed units that you can't see through. Even though you know it won't be done for hours on end, it's still really hard to not just crack it open and take a look at what's going on, which is probably exactly the same as it was just a couple hours ago when I looked at it...
The only fault I would give this is the fact that due to it's lower wattage it's not expandable like my Nesco but then again I really do like the clear housing that it has. At the power rating of this one you really aren't going to be able to put a lot of extra shelves but most people don't really need that.
I ended up putting this side by side with my nesco 600W unit and running the same amount of fruits in both of them for a couple batches each it really wasn't much of a difference in time frame that they both had to run. Granted the Nesco does get to heat faster due to the extra wattage it didn't make that much of a difference in the long run, maybe 30-90 minutes difference in total run time each batch but when it takes a day to run certain types of batches it doesn't really matter if one goes 30-90 minutes longer, most aren't going to notice that difference.
Westinghouse is a little quieter than my other model which is nice.
No fruit leather/mushy food trays. I got some of these with my other unit and they come in handy when I'm dehydrating precooked foods for camping trips or for just snacks at work. I do fruit rolls with my other unit in the liquid trays but seeing as this unit didn't come with any and that's a heavy hit seeing as I do like to make things that require those trays, especially before a camping trip. Also while the slots on this unit are of decent small size the competition normally gives you trays with rather small holes for small items, like when making your own raisins or something small in nature. I use those when dehydrating bird peppers, they keep the small peppers from getting stuck.
Overall, it's a good unit and is a little quieter than my other one but it does take longer and doesn't come with as many accessories. It's hard to give it a higher rating when it's lacking the accessories but the quietness of it is a nice plus. It's a very simple to operate unit though, doesn't really require much other than a quick reference to the manual and set it and walk away for however long. Just remember that the more humid the environment is that you are trying to dehydrate in the longer it will take. I tend to put mine in the shed so that it's a nice hot dry place, I also put mine on a timer as I know how long most things will run and sometimes I forget to go out and check it so I set the timer just in case I forget and it will turn off before the unit runs for too long. I normally add an extra 20 minutes for each hour that I might have the unit running just so it's not running for crazy long times.

So quieter than my old
Silea : Clear sides, so you can watch the progress without opening it and letting moisture in and heat out
The dehydrator this is replacing in my kitchen has opaque sides, which meant that when i needed to check the progress of the dehydration i had to open it up, which of course slows the whole process down marginally.
I love the clear sides. Love love love.
The controls are obvious and easy - a thermostat and an on-off switch.
Clean-up is, of course, not quite as easy as they imply, especially when you dehydrate wetter foods like bananas, but easy enough that i haven't (yet) been tempted to just toss a tray and see if i can get by with fewer.
Elizabeth Hamel : very quiet and easy to clean

Very simple, plenty of trays for drying a lot of items at once.
Just a power button, and a temperature control. All you need, and it gets the job done. Despite the simplicity, it comes with a fantastic instruction manual... Lots of great advice on dehydrating different items.
You do hear the fan running, but it's pretty quiet.
My only gripe is that the trays are plastic. I know it's not high heat, but still... I can't help but wonder about leaching.

This product works great! I'm going to have lots of fun making spices, etc.
danji31 : Doesn't reach specified temperatures
I have only one issue with this product - it cannot go above ~135°F. I purchased this to dry out filament for my 3D printer, and I used multiple sensors and locations to measure the temperature and I was never able to reach above 135°F. This might be fine for PLA filaments, but I have filaments that require between 70°C and 80°C (158°F-176°F) for drying, and this just wont cut it.
Tobor : Very good value. I use it to dry brass cases ...
Very good value. I use it to dry brass cases for reloading. It holds hundreds of cases and drys them quickly. I have perfectly dry cases in less than 2 hours. Probably 1 would be enough. You can't beat this for the money.
