I have been fishing spybaits for more than two years on Lake Ouachita in Arkansas, which is a clear-water lake. It is a bait that can be used during any time of the year. While I primarily fish for spotted bass and large mouth bass, I have caught many other species including stripers (even over 10 pounds), catfish, walleye, crappie, bluegill,trout and white bass. My most productive color has been American shad but I have also had success with other colors. The G-fix, the model that weighs a little more, is especially useful when the fish are in a feeding frenzy and hitting shad on the surface since you can cast this little bait for a long distance. I have used both the 80 and 90 versions and I have found both of them to be great.

There are several keys to using this finesse technique. First, I believe it is best fished on a spinning rod and reel a rod that is medium-light spinning rod that is over 6 1/2 feet. If you need to cast long distances to catch fish that are feeding on the surface, a rod over 7 feet is even better. Second, understand that the lure sinks about 8-12 inches per second depending on the model and that you may need to count down the lure to the depth of the fish that you are going after. Third, use a light line, I prefer 6 pound test fluorocarbon but I have gone down to as low as 4 pound test fluorocarbon. Fourth, in most cases you will want to reel the bait back at a painfully slow rate: just enough speed that will not kill the action. Finally, while the retrieve is normally a slow steady one, if the fish are finicky, consider stopping the bait every once in awhile and this will sometimes provoke a bite.

While, I also fish drop shot worms, crankbaits, jerkbaits, topwater baits, whacky rigs and topwater baits depending on the conditions, I always have a rod on the deck rigged with a spybait.
