Questions about Maxima Fishing Line Leader Wheel, Chameleon
Q:
Sooo. the sizing is confusing to me. is size 3? the same as 3lb. test also known as 5x?
Answer: The leaders size (in X) refers more to the diameter of the line. The higher the X the lower the lb. test. Maxima typically has a bit larger diameter than other manufacturers. I like for fishing streamers because Maxima seems to have a higher abrasion resistance and shock strength for the smash-and-grab takes. The smaller diameter (5X, 6X, 7X) leader or tippet is sued for fish that avoid biting if they see the line - known as being leader shy. Anyway, for more info on line sizes you can google fishing leader sizes and compare X size with line diameter with lb. test. Again, not all manufacturers' lines are the same.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Would it be alright to add a 3lb tippet section to the end of a 6lb tippet section (all Chameleon)? Or is that too big of a difference?
Answer: It is not too big a difference. If I were going to do that, I would equalize by doubling the 3lb tippet at the top end, and using a blood knot or opposite uni-knots to tie it to the 6lb. That way you have two strands of 3 tied to one strand of 6. I would use loop-to-loop connections to tie the 6lb material to whatever you have above it.
Answer: I have found that dropping 3-4 lbs from one section to another works fine for me. Larger amounts like 8lb and above to a 3lb does not work well. I have adopted my own rule of no more than twice the poundage of the small to section. My leaders are 15, 10, 5 and the 3 or 2 pound and I have no problems. Wet a line and keep it tight!
Answer: I have been using tippet rings for years and see no reason to not use a 3lb tippet tied to a tippet ring which is tied to the 6lb leader. Be sure to leave a length of line to tie another fly to your point fly. I only nymph fish....
Answer: I can't see why not. It's more to do with how the line will lay, it may work for your set up,"size of fly, rod weight, etc". I like to stick with the taper chart that maxima provides. There's some other web sites that provide good line taper recipes.
Answer: No, That should suffice for what you are trying to do.
Answer: Should work fine. I have done it using double surgeon or blood knot
Q:
What is the diameter (in 1/10 inches) of Maxima Chameleon 15lb.
Answer: The 15lb Chameleon spool is marked .015 inch, so it's .15 tenths.
Answer: The diameter of Maxima Chameleon is .015. We hope this helps. Have a great day!
Answer: The diameter is 0.15
Q:
The image for the produst looks different then what I have purchased in the store. Are these old spools or an old image?
Answer: These are new spools. Amazon is still using the old spool photos.
Answer: This is just an old image.
Answer: Hi, this an old image. They are similar, but different label. Hope this helps Thanks FMT Outdoors
Q:
What is this product made of? It doesn't specify mono or fluorocarbon or whatever.
Answer: I may not have this right, but a little research will answer the question. Maxima chameleon will say fluorocarbon on the lable. This one in question is mono.
Answer: Maxima is a very abrasion resistant nylon monofilament.
Answer: What difference does it make, it works!
Answer: Maxima is a very abrasion resistant nylon monofilament.
Q:
What lb leader line for salmon fishing?
Answer: I guess it depends on where you are to go fishing and what salmon you are fishing for.
Answer: I typically use 20 lb. tippet for salmon when fly fishing for salmon.
Answer: Sorry don’t know I only trout fish with mine
Answer: 20-30#
Q:
What is the diameter of the line.
Answer: My son has what I bought and he is overseas now.
Q:
I don’t see 20lbs as an option but you have it displayed. Do you have 20lbs chameleon?
Answer: Yep
Q:
There's one size choice selection titled "27yds". Is this one 20lb? There are no other choices for 20lb.
Answer: Yes, this is for the 20lb Maxima Chameleon.
Answer: see the drop-down menu for that.
Q:
Is this line only use for fly fishing? I only have spinning rods.
Answer: I use this to build my own keaders ! At 27 yards it is not enough to spook onto a spinning rod but they do sell it in larger yards . It would work I guess but I prefer Berkeley Line for my spin casting tods!
Answer: I use it as leader for a fly rod. Its really stiff. My guess would be i suppose.
Q:
Can I use this line for float fishing instead of seagar floro? I’m using a spinning reel and rod. Not fly fishing.
Answer: Its light enough it will respond to bait or rig you use.
Answer: I DON'T SEE WHY YOU COULDN'T
Q:
What is the difference between ultragreen and chameleon? (stiffer, thinner, floats) which one is better for fly fishing leader and tippit? thanks.
Answer: Both are very similar, the green is a little more invisible and softer and better for tippets especially in the salt, and the chameleon I prefer in the butt section of my Euro leaders.
Answer: The difference is all in what tyoe of fishing you are doing. If you are starting, the color is to match close to water, then start with floating, easy strike indicator. It was easier for me. Good luck, happy waters

Q:
On the 10 lb spool, is it 200m and .30mm? Details are not listed. Thank you!!
Answer: Maxima leader spools and most leader material spools are not categorized by m and mm.
Answer: 200m is length in meters, approx. 27 yds; .30 m is diameter in meters which is approx. 0.012inches. BTW, the chameleon color is great, easy to see and tie knots.
Answer: The numbers shown are .012 inch and 27 yards. Bear in mind that Maxima leader is a hard-finish material, not suitable for braid-to mono knots like the FG or Sebile knots, which dig in to mono. It will slip on Maxima or Mason..
Answer: It's .012 inch, 27 yards. Not shown in metric numbers
Q:
There's one size choice selection titled "27yds". Is this one 20lb? There are no other choices for 20lb.
Answer: Yes, this is for the 20lb Maxima Chameleon.
Answer: see the drop-down menu for that.
Q:
I understand this is monofilament, is the 20# nylon or fluro? Will it float?
Answer: It's monofilament and it will float
Answer: Only if it says flourocarbon, if not mono. but I do prefer Chancellom for the color. It is less likely to be seen compared to other colors
Q:
Why does it take sooo long for you to shop anything? I’m looking at the same stuff I put an order in for last week and the delivery date of the 28th
Q:
What Is the on test
Q:
What color is the line?
Answer: Mark is incorrect. Chameleon is a rusty red color.
Answer: a very light green.
Q:
What line weight is the 27 yd size?
Answer: It says in the item copy that the line weights under 30# are 27 yards, 30 and 40# are 17 yards. Remember that this is leader material, not main fishing line, so it's a little stiffer than standard monofilament. I use it with a 12 to 14-inch bite tip of fluorocarbon or limp mono.
Q:
What is the diameter of the line? 0.12?
Answer: My Maxima 2 lb test spool shows a diameter of 0.005 inches. That is equal to 0.127 mm.
Answer: I only bought the 15# and 20#, not 2#.
Answer: I believe it is 0.022
Answer: Got to their website and down load the leader diameter/pound rating matrix.

Q:
Question What is the diameter of the line.
Answer: About half then the nylon line
Q:
What size would I order to match 5X tippet material?
Answer:
Answer:
Answer: If you are adding tippet to a 5x leader to lengthen it, use 4 pound material. If you want to continue the taper to make a finer leader, use three pound.. Most 5x is 6 pound strength.
Answer: 3lb is 5x tippet
Q:
Pound test is this?
Answer: It comes in several different tests. Select which one you want when you order. The photo is of 20 pound test.
Answer: 20 lb
Answer: the picture here says 20
Q:
What do you recommend test pound leader for #20 and #30 braid main line?
Answer: I fly fish only, theres plenty of sites on the net you can access to answer your question.
Q:
What is the color of this tippet material ?
Answer: The color is a very light yellow/clear. I prefer the darker material which is Maxima chameleon, a dark brown color. I do use both. It is very kink and abrasion resistant.
Answer: It is dark brown but is supposed to be invisible in the water.
Answer: it tells you in the description-- clear, camouflage, whatever.
Answer: I guess I'd call it darkish brown, easy to see on land, but seems to disappear pretty well in the water.
Answer: it has a green hue, but once in water my eyes cant see it.
Answer: Dark Brown

best fishing leader
witz : I've found that Maxima makes a better butt section than hard Mason leader material because it's ...
I use Maxima as a flyline leader material: In freshwater as a 25 or 30# butt section and 20# midsection with a fluorocarbon tippet. In saltwater as a 30# full-length leader with a flurocabon tippet. For my fishing, I've found that Maxima makes a better butt section than hard Mason leader material because it's not as stiff. A lot of saltwater fly fishermen prefer the extra stiffness of Mason for a butt section; it's a matter of what works best (or feels best) to the individual. Mason's superior abrasion resistance makes it better for a saltwater bite or shock tip under the standard tippet. This stuff's pretty subjective. Can't say one thing's always good and the other lousy.

S. : but is a great spinning leader
Maxima Chameleon leader is as tough as it gets. I use it for fresh & saltwater where I need strength & abrasion resistance.
It is not a 'limp' mono so wouldn't be my choice for light fly fishing leader, but is a great spinning leader. Been using it for at least 30 years.
Connecticut Shopper : great price.
Fast service, great price.
dennis waln : Must for Salmon fishing.
Great leader material.
Aggressive Ted : This line lays straight and doesn't coil
I have used it for years because of its high strength and abrasion resistance. It holds up very well and I like its ability to change color to match the water conditions.
Ralph E. : Good stuff
Good stuff
B. Owen : Best line for custom fly leaders
There is a reason fly fishermen use this line for leaders and have for decades. It just works. The options for custom leaders are just endless with different sizes and color shades.
I like going out knowing I tied my leaders to each specific purpose and due to the quality of the line there is no one but me to blame if my leader fails.
DIY OIL : Five Stars
Will not use till spring, but it is exactly what I wanted.
Clark P. Rector : Ok
Sort of ordered this on accident. The color is rather brown. I may use it for carp fishing in muddy water. I also have used it as ribbing for trying stoneflies for fly fishing.
John Howard : Super subtle, knot strength great / / / / ...
Fly fishing, stock standard leader of choice. Super subtle, knot strength great / / / / / go to leader
X : Works as expected
My favorite mono. Tough and relatively stiff.
Willy Dustice : Chameleon rules
It's simply the best, better than all the rest
Mark : Five Stars
Good Stuff. Used for attaching leaders to fly line. It worked.

Christopher : 3.5 our of 5 A must have when building a euro nyphing leader
An absolute must when building a euro nyphing leader. I’ve purchased the same in 15lb and 10 Lb so the leader tappers a bit. 6/8 8 foot sections of each.
The reason I gave this three out of five stars is because it’s such a long section and the packaging has no way to lock the remaining line into the sport it’s a pain when it comes unraveled in your bag.

Perfect start for a tapered fly leader, and chameleon has always been an all around awesome leader for salmon, been around forever no need to improve.
