Answer: The best blades are carbon steel. They are harder and will hold an edge. Stainless blades are softer and the sharp edge rolls and becomes dull.

Answer: And that's a problem how? I fish offshore Oregon for halibut, lingcod, rockfish, salmon, etc. This knife is sharp, supple, and dies not rust.

Answer: When filleting fish with very small scales like salmon and trout etc. the edge lasts for quite a while. Fish with larger scales like walleyes and northerns I usually sharpen my blade after doing a couple of fish.

Answer: It really depends on how big your fish are, but I use my 7” knife for everything including bluegill, crappie, bass, and large catfish. I don’t know that an extra inch would make a big difference either way.

Answer: I prefer the 7 inch over the 9 inch for panfish.I own both and like the 7 best especially for filleting steelhead.
Answer: It may be a little bulky but the thinness and flex should allow you to rotate the blade at the backbone for a clean fillet.

Mine arrived quite sharp but had a toothy edge. Reprofiled it and took it to a mirror edge. Cuts much easier now. Can't get it to the level of a Victorinox but it is much better than others in the same price range (Dalstrong, Wusthof, Buck). Haven't used it enough to know how well it will hold the edge. I like the grip but to get it into the sheath I have to push on the sheath spine then wiggle it quite a bit. The sheath is already wearing away a streak of the Teflon coating right down the middle of the blade.

The 7 inch is the right choice over the longer blades for me. Any fisherman would be happy with this knife. The handle is nice for gripping and the blade is very sharp. Cuts through fish like hot butter. I have carbon knives, SS knives and the only knife that comes close is the KA BAR knives I have. The Bubba Blade cost a little more but has some features the KA BARs do not have, but both are very good filet knives and are VERRRY SHARRRRP!

Very disappointed. I’ve had this knife 8 months and the blade is now chipped and broke. I’ve filleted no more then 20 fish in this time and can’t believe bubba blade does not allow warranty claims for chips in the blade. Dexter knives from now on made in the USA
