Questions about Outdoor Edge Fish & Bone - Folding Fillet Knife with 5.0" 440A Stainless Steel Blade for Fish and Processing Big Game - Pocket Clip
Q:
Is it better to have a small knife for a big fish, or a large knife for a small fish?
Answer: I use a small knife to de-bone and larger knife to fillet the skin
Answer: Small
Answer: Personal preference of the user
Q:
Does this knife hold up in a salt water environment? Does it rust?
Answer: have not used it in salt water but has never rusted cleaning fish
Answer: Mine has held up nicely but I admit I haven't used it in salt water. My guess is that if it washed in fresh water (and then dried) after each salt water use, it should last a while.
Answer: The locking spring and the belt clip is rusting on mine.
Q:
Anyone compare this to the Opinel slim for field fileting of fish? That one is pricier as I know that brand well.
Answer: Outdoor edge is plenty sharp, but you need to clean the blade and receptacle. After half a century I'd go Rapala.
Q:
is it good and sharp out of the box, or should I sharpen it upon receipt?
Answer: For the price it’s a very good knife, I use it for fruit inspection. It’s way better that the citrus knives provided for us and it’s very easy to keep razor sharp.
Answer: It's reasonably sharp right out of the box but that is a subjective opinion. If you want it even sharper, you can sharpen it more.
Answer: Very sharp out of the box.
Answer: I've filleted a lot of fish and sharpened it maybe 4 times in 2 years. Out of the box was sharp, very sharp. Great durable knife.
Answer: The knife was nice and sharp upon arrival. However, it is our practice to lightly sharpen our knifes before each use since we used it to flay the fish.
Answer: All Outdoor Edge knives come pre-sharpened.
Answer: You should sharpen it when you get. I did that because I didn't think it was sharp enough
Answer: You do not need to sharpen this knife they are very sharp.
Q:
Does it have a locking blade?
Answer: yes, great knife and the 5" blade is a handy size for a fillet blade...
Answer: Yes, it has a locking blade.
Answer: YES THIS MODEL HAS A LOCKING BLADE.
Answer: Yes. It locks nicely.
Answer: Hi: Yes it does.
Answer: Yes...very good one. Absolutely superb knife...have given two as gifts.
Answer: Yes
Q:
Is this knife made in US?
Answer: No, it is made in China unfortunately but it is still a great knife.
Answer: Hi: No -- I believe it is made in China.
Answer: China
Q:
Does it come with a sheath?
Answer: Yes -- It comes with a nylon sheath.
Answer: No but it's a great knife at that price.
Answer: Yes
Answer: Yes the one I order did
Answer: yes
Q:
Will a magnet stick to the blade?
Answer: THE BLADE IS 400 SERIES STAINLESS STEEL AND A MAGNET WILL STICK TO IT. IF IT WAS 300 SERIES S. S. IT WOULDN'T.
Answer: It's 400 series stainless steel, it's magnetic and hardenable. I've had this knife for 5 years and no rust on the blade.
Answer: Yes, a magnet sticks to the blade.
Answer: Yep!!!
Answer: Really not sure - sorry about that!
Answer: Yes it will!
Answer: yes
Q:
Does this knife allow to change out the blade?
Answer: No. It is a folding filet knife.
Answer: No it’s permanent
Answer: No
Answer: No.
Q:
What makes this a great field dressing/hunting knife? I bought it to be a tackle box backup fillet knife for fish. I have hunting/gutting knives.
Answer: I'm sure the field knives are fine.I found this to work great because of the thin blade and extreme sharpness of its edge. Cuts like butter and fits comfortable in your hand . It's the next best thing to surgical you won't be dissapointed.
Answer: It's a good knife for small game, sharp & easy to carry. Have used it for skinning deer and worked fine. Would not use for gutting or heavy work on deer. It is really best when used for filleting fish.
Answer: I found iy very useful while mackerel fishing as i could gut and bone the fish out at sea.
Product reviews of Outdoor Edge Fish & Bone - Folding Fillet Knife with 5.0" 440A Stainless Steel Blade for Fish and Processing Big Game - Pocket Clip
Megan S : Great knife.
Works well, very sharp and cuts through the fish nice. Good price, can't beat it.
Dan Nixon : Just what I was looking for
Great knife! Sturdy yet very lightweight. Blade opens and locks nicely. No problem with rust, just oil occasionally like any pocket knife . Highly recommend.
jon : Large and incharged knife/ great for citrus cutting
Great Knife. easy to use; very sharp.
be aware that the blade is pretty long, about 5-6 in (I know they tell you the length in the description, but I feel the picture was a little misleading).
pros:
great size
sharp and great steel 440
the clip is amazing and strong; have Phillip screws holding it (easy to fix)
lock is strong, very LITTLE bend in the knife, even though its thin
Cons:
preference.... would like a different color, and maybe a smaller handle, but still happy with the product.
I use this to cut and taste test citrus. this knife is perfect, and will recommend this to others.
David : Five Stars
Great knife
Flyin'Hawaiian : Nice but definitely needs sharpening before you use it!
This is a nice, flexible knife that is perfect for running down the spine on a slab of fish or gutting a few dozen trout! Initially I was going to send it back, as it was impossible to get it to cut anything, but sharpened the edge 3 times before it actually held an edge and now goes through most fish with zero effort. Have no idea why it took 3 full tries to get it sharp, but this thing is as sharp as a razor now.
If you feel like its just not cutting well or you're having to use a LOT of force to get through your fish (or whatever you're cutting), try running a super fine diamond sharpener a few times over that edge, its the only thing I could use to get it to really cut with little effort.
Lando : Solid blade
Good quality knife, would buy again
Sosie : outdoor edge boning knife
Best in field boning knife period. Makes boning out elk in the field a breeze. Every backcountry hunter needs this knife in their pack.
Shane Serrao : but based on initial inspection looks like it would do just fine
well made. Have not used it in the field yet, but based on initial inspection looks like it would do just fine!
Barry D : Very good inexpensive knife
This is my second purchase of this knife – my fifth of this type. While I like all the knives, the slim size and case make this one top of the heap.
Stephen Sedmak : Awesome folding slicer. Great steak knife
This is the best-slicing folding knife that I own thus far. The thin full-flat grind blade is sharp enough for me to shave with straight out of the box.
But I actually use it as a folding steak knife. The only odd thing about that is the handle is 3 inches "too long", but it still makes for a pleasurable table experience, moving through food with almost no resistance.
I actually bought two of these knives, one green and one orange. The orange knife had some blade wobble on lockup, but I tightened the screws a bit and now it's nice and secure like the green one.
It's a light and flexible knife, so it doesn't feel solid in the hand, but it does appear to be durable and I do expect that it will last many years of regular use with basic care.
Artie : Five Stars
One of my favorite tools. Functional as a fillet knife and safe to carry because it folds.
Daniel L. Moore : Handy Portable Fillet Knife for the Tackle Box
I really like this knife. With the pocket clip and the nylon sheath you have options to carry this. I have been wanting a folding fillet knife for my tackle box and this fits perfectly. It came sharp. It is comfortable in my hand.
Lando : Solid blade
Good quality knife, would buy again

Kindle CUSTOMER MOSES BROTHER : Five Stars
A must for anyone who quarters and debones an Elk. Very sharp and flexible.
foulanchors : Nice fillet/boning knife!
Nice fillet filing knife with ballistic nylon knife case.
Roderick : Good folding filet knife
I bought different folding filet knives to try them out. I bought the Bubba blade folding knife but thought the grip was too big for my hands and the blade was too short. The blade on the Outdoor Edge is longer and it was sharp. I have the CRKT folding filet knife, which has been my favorite. However, after using the Outdoor Edge the CRKT filet knife grip feels a little too thin. I have used this knife to filet and cut up some catfish. It did the job with ease. Since it has a solid handle I would make to to clean the blade. Other wise there is an opportunity that the inside of the handle will become dirty. The knife also comes with a scabbard with ta belt loop if you want to wear it on your hip. I would buy this knife again or even give it as a gift.
Kipper : Five Stars
Great little knife. Light and durable for use on a backpacking trip.
VenisonVixen : a perfect knife for the first time field dressing!
I searched amazon for my first field dressing knife and came across this one. I purchased this based on the reviews of others and because Outdoor Edge is a well known company. It was delivered quickly and the item was packaged as described. There was even a miniature catalog and a bonus card to guide you on how to filet fish and where and what to cut on a deer and the names for cuts of meat. My hands are tiny, so the somewhat narrow handle doesn't make using it feel awkward. My husband has large hands and he has no problems handling the knife too. I used it for the first time to field dress my first doe of the season and separating cuts and slicing the silver layers off the meat came easily. I highly recommend this product for anyone who likes to hunt and fish....
Larry T Mccabe : I love these knives this is my third one I have ...
I love these knives this is my third one I have purchased I keep one at camp one at home and one in my back pack.
Save your money : Excellent knife
great knife here. I AM VERY GLAD I BOUGHT IT. IT HOLD A EDGE FOR A LONG TIME. GREAT KNIFE TO HAVE IN YOU POCKET
Jungle Jim : Great filet and Boning knife! Just great!
Fantastic knife. I use it on all my pan fish fresh or salt water! It has held up well to the saltwater environment also. When boning deer meat this baby makes quick work! Back straps are a breeze with this knife! The blade has just enough flex for everything I use it for... Love them! All outdoor edge knifes are great!
Trav : First Impression
I received the knife today. I gotta say, out of the box, I rather like it. The pouch is adequate, if not on the cheap end of the spectrum. The knife is fairly light, folds well and locks up tight. Sharpness, well, it wasn't dull. I touched it up on my Worksharp field sharpener and it's now scary sharp within a few minutes of working it through the system.
I picked this up for an upcoming backpacking trip to the beach and jetty so as to process our daily catches for meals. I'll update on the performance when I get back. Tight lines!
Joe : Not as sharp as I expected.
Needed to be sharpened when I got it but overall Seems to be a decent knive.

Raul Sevilla : They last for years with proper care. I have owned one for 5 years.
I buy these by the dozen for our field staff. We are a citrus company in California. We use them to inspect fruit and they are very sharp and hold up for years. Also they are very easy to sharpen.
TBess139 : 5 stars!
Prefect sharp and durable
