Just curious about this....Are any BR members going to be at the Kayak Bass Fishing National Championship at Kentucky Lake tournament in March?
Buddy of mine is going. I want to but I got a baby due that time. I will try 2017 for sure. Hopefully by then I will be a more versatile fisherman. Right now I'm a shaky head/senko and jig kind of guy.
i wish it wasn't so far away from me.... maybe in 2017....
pass for me. Not a fan of the kayak tournament crowds myself. I may do some local tourneys and some online stuff but going out there is not my cup of tea. It kind of defeats the purpose of why i got into kayak fishing in the first place.
Not to mention they allow electric motors which is a huge advantage especially on a big lake like kentucky lake.

Ditto. Don't really care about the tourney trail, though I don't
mind them using electric motors (since I do ) ...
Only thing I have to say about the motors, it is a huge advantage
to those with 40 lb thrust and above. My 30 lets me keep pace
with my buddy who paddles, LOL. Yeah, eventually he'll tire, but
he can beat me full out... And for those with Hobie's or pedal yaks
there's an advantage there, too, as leg muscles are bigger and don't
exhaust as quickly as arms...
Anyhow, doesn't matter to me, really, because I don't fish tourneys.
any propulsion that isn't paddling is an advantage. Even if you can keep up with a motor you are expending a whole lot more energy and by the end of the day that will come into play. Especially if you are trying to get back to the boat ramp in time.
Pedal yaks the same thing applies just not at the same level but i think motorized and pedal should be in their own category.
Ah, Just curious to see if anyone else was heading there. I've fished smaller tournaments and help run our own tournament trail here in IL. It will probably be one of the biggest tournaments I ever fish and I think it'll be an experience by itself. So far there are 379 guys with an additional 100 to qualify from the open tournament the day prior.
With the big water and option to launch from almost anywhere on the lake, I think the time spent to study the lake will help mitigate some of the advantage from trolling motors and pedal kayaks. Bottom line is you still have to catch the fish.
@GetBent You never know, it might be a jig/senko/shakey head bite..:)

Absolutely the case!
I'm really torn on this one. I qualified and was excited at first, but that excitement is dwindling quickly. I don't like the suddenly we have to pay to join his groups to be allowed to participate in the tourney(in addition to the entry fee). I wouldn't have had a problem with it if it was announced from the beginning. However, as it stands it feels as if the whole thing is being made up as they go along. There are a few other things about him in particular that have tempered my excitement, but this isn't the place for that.
I'll be going with 4 other guys from my club. I agree though that the extra costs for the membership is kind of a bummer.
I fished the first KBF Open on Santee Cooper back in 2013. It was a great experience as it was the first time I met a whole bunch of people that I only knew online through fishing forums. Like a lot of things you learn a lot from the first tournament you participate in. I wound up fishing our local trail for the past 3 years. Won a couple of events and did poorly in a some events, you do continue to learn from each time you step up to that plate.
I am not fishing this one in March but it should make for an exciting tournament. Good luck to those who make this one.
I've fished every KBF Open and Invitational since the first one 4 years ago on Santee Cooper. Unfortunately, I will probably be missing this one, as I'm working 6 days a week now, and they cut 3 days of vacation. It is a great atmosphere, and a lot of fun. You get to hang out with a lot of people you see on other forums, and social media. The chance of winning a lot of money and great prizes.
Chad has dropped the mandatory KBF Membership, but if you was a KBF Member then you get special discounts all year long, and will be willing to win more prizes at tournaments.
I think everyone that qualified through my series will be going, and I'm sure they will represent well.
Good luck to all who go.
I will hopefully attend in 2017. I get an extra week of paid vacation next year so I can make 2 big events instead of 1.
A few of us from Michigan will be there. This will be the first time I have fished Kentucky lake. My only goal is to not get skunked!
I've felt the same way as others have posted about how it seems they are just making it up as they go along. It is a lot of moving pieces and hard to make that many people happy. I'm going for the experience and a chance at some money with all of their prizes from different manufacturers.
@faygo1979, I have the same goal as well. Hopefully the weather will cooperate and it will be a good time.

agreed and agreed. i think old Chad is just making it up as he goes and trying to put some money in his pocket as he does... but never mind that ego trip and just go fish and maybe even make some money doing it! good luck to you!
I've thought about fishing from my kayak in a high school tournament this spring just because I know I could do it since so many fish get released at the ramps in spring and I wouldn't have to go anywhere. The guys at Kentucky lake should keep that in mind haha.
Last April the top 2 bags of the tournament were caught by the only two boats who blew their motors and had to fish on the TM all day. If that says anything.

You can win pretty much any tourney anywhere with those three lures.
I guess I wouldn't mind being in a kayak tournament but I can see myself paddling my Ride 115 around and getting tired real quick while others are peddling or have a motor between their legs and zooming past me and that would tick me off big time. Those kayaks with motors or peddling props need their own class. Iv'e seen some pictures on some club websites showing them in their kayaks and tournaments and frankly, I saw so many pictures of people with the peddle drive and looking so "preppy" it turned me off. That's not say I'm against kayaks with motors, I would like to get a WS ATAK with motor in the future. But lets be real, a kayak with a trolling motor is not a kayak.
Honestly I use a hobie outback and when i fish with a couple guys that use a ride 135 and an Atak they actually paddle faster then I normally pedal. I am sure if push came to shove I could outdistance them but the real advantage is not the distances pedals cover rather it is being able to stay in position by peddling. while fishing. most of the time a good good kayak with an anchor trolley covers 90% of what a pedal powered kayak can do.
There has bee grumbling about how the money is paid out and how the tourneys are set up from day one and from what i have gleaned talking to people, it is mostly justified. I get trying to grow the sport but it's not for me. I also totally agree that motorized and pedal yaks should not be on the same playing field as paddle kayaks. Sure paddle kayaks may be able to keep up with some motorized/pedal driven kayaks but at the end of the day your legs will be a lot fresher and able to poodle further distances more easily than those with a paddle. It just plain isn't fair to me.
That all being said, good luck to those who enter and I hope it is some no name person in a an old SOT who wins it all and can laugh at the people with their $5k+ "kayaks" lol
i'll be there. along with a pretty good contingent from the F-L-A.
couldn't care less what you sit in. just bring your best game.
cheers

So who made it to Kentucky Lake last weekend? I made the drive and managed to pull out a limit both days, but it wasn't anything to brag about by any stretch of the imagination. The weather really destroyed my plans for this tournament. I spent countless hours reading archived fishing reports, tournament results, scouring maps, scouting and prefishing only to throw it all away and focus solely on catching limit both days. Late Friday night I decided to take the safe route find a marina and skip docks for limit. It worked, but it wasn't particularly gratifying. Don't get me wrong I had a blast meeting new people and fishing, but it would have been nice to find out if the work would have paid dividends.
I was there, managed to catch some fish during practice but had a tough time during the actual tournament. I learned a few things and have some work to do. I'm glad I went and met a bunch of cool people. It was a fun experience with the pre tournament prep and research on the lake. The people of TN and KY were great, found some interesting locals to talk to and nice places to eat.
i only managed one fish during the tournament, but did much better during practice. I was not prepared for the wind and conditions on sat and Sunday and could not effectively fish my spots. I also caught this 22.5" drum. I thought I won when I hooked it.
congrats for both of you to get out there and give it a try! anybody in a kayak knows that too much wind just flat out sucks! i'd say the experience was one you'll remember and if you enjoyed it enough, you'll do it again!

The guy that won it was in a paddle kayak! I had a really good time. I tore em up on the three days of prefishing, but then the weather hit and it was game over for me. I just couldnt get on anything of size on the tournament days. That lake is really healthy. I couldn't believe the amount of life that was below the water. I'm definately looking forward to going back there in the future.
i don't care who won, it doesn't change the fact that having a pedal drive or motor driven kayak is an advantage.
