So the Elite Series is coming to the Delaware river next August! I've been waiting forever for this and honestly never thought it would happen. It's going to be an interesting tournament. Anyways I'm really interested in signing up to be a Marshall. I live less than 2 miles from the Delaware and never fish it because I just don't know where to start. Being in a boat with one of these guys for a day would be incredible. I could learn more from them in a day than I have my whole life. So, has anyone ever been a Marshall? How was the experience? I'd imagine it's amazing. Any input from anyone who has done it would be greatly appreciated! Fish on!
one of my tournament partners has been a marshal twice. he loved it. some of the pros obviously aren't going to be as lively as others. some will hardly talk. my buddy was lucky enough to be partnered with two of the more well known elites and learned more from just watching them for 7-8 hours than he could have imagined. they were pretty engaging in conversation throughout the day and didn't mind answering questions. jump at the opportunity. i'm not sure if it's first come first serve but get it when you can.
Yea I mean if they werent trying to talk Id obviously just let them be but even just watching Im sure I could learn a ton. Im definitely going to go for it. Me and a buddy are going to sign up whenever it opens. I guess registration would start near the beginning of the season?
I was a marshal at Oneida in 2012 and St. Lawrence River in 2013. Both experiences were great. You'll learn more watching those guys on the water for a few days than anywhere else. You'll see a lot of little things you don't see on TV when they only show catches, and a lot of things that the pros don't really talk about. Their mental game is on another level. Do it! I will be at the Delaware River also!

Yea I'm definitely going to go for it. What exactly does the job entail? You just sit there and watch them and make sure they don't cheat? Also, any idea of how long before the tournament registration starts? Is it a first come first serve basis?

Marshal registration opened today for BASS life members. It opens next Tuesday for all BASS members. The job is pretty much make sure they don't break the rules. I never had any rule issues in the 6 days I've been out on the water. Other than that you just watch and learn. 4 of the pro's I was with were talkative and we talked all day. The other two were quieter and I just let them do their thing.
do you have to pay to be a marshall ? or is it free??
Free to be a Marshal far as I know. 100% agree you will learn a TON. Have had the good fortunate to be in pro boats 100s of times, never gets old. Guys are amazing.
I want to do this
I signed up. Its a $125 entry fee. Which is refunded if you dont get in. Im on the waiting list. Does everyone go on the waiting list until they select the marshalls is my question.
check your e-mail on Monday. They always put you on a waiting list on weekends. Next work day they will get back to you. Just remember, if you don't like to go 70 mph in a boat it can be a bad, day if the water is rough.
did any of you guys ever feel unsafe going that fast?
I would love to hear more marshal stories, I think it would be cool but don't want to have to lay in the bottom of the either

I signed up a day after the registration opened. Nothing yet.

They are masters of boat control. It is a little nuts going 75 mph sometimes but you get used to it. If there is big boat wake coming at you they slow down and make it as easy as possible. The worst is when there is a little chop but not bad enough to make them slow down. I was a bit sore after day 2 at the St. Lawrence when I was with Jared Miller and we ran 90 miles each way out to Lake Ontario.

Only when I was riding with Cliff Prince and we came upon a flock of coots. One of them got off the water a little slowly and zoomed past my face about six inches away.

That made me laugh. I imagined you both looking at each other, he kind of shrugs his shoulders, and both of you just laugh.
I have caught a coot with the trolling motor before,LOL
They've been all over the river by my house the past weeks and I have to admit, I always try to drive straight through them on the water. I hate coots... so much...so very much. Maybe I can thin the heard before duck season opens!
Martin, that is too weird! That is exactly what happened.

Thanks man! Sucks that it's a year away.
I thought it was $100 to be a marshal?
one of the guys in our club got to do it & he loved it. He said some of the anglers are quiet & focused until they got their limit, then they loosened up a bit. From the sounds of it, it will be the time of your life if you get to do it.

There was a $125 registration fee. If you don't get in it's refunded. But I got in! it's a little over 6 months away and I'm crazy excited for it.
