I am curious how many of you wear a jersey when you fish local tournaments, and what your reason for wearing it is. (you get paid to, you represent a local business, just for fun, etc etc whatever your reason may be)
i can understand if you get paid to wear it, but im more curious why people wear them if they are not being paid. no disrespect meant, just curious who wears them, why they wear them, where they buy them etc etc
I wear one for a couple reasons. To promote my sponsor but aside from that they are super lightweight and comfortable and I can wear a long sleeve for sun protection without getting too hot.
I've worn a lot of fishing shirts in the past but none as comfortable as a quality wicking jersey from gemini, rayjus etc. If I did not have a sponsor to promote I would probably have a plain colored one just for the comfort.
I had a jersey made to promote my wifes catering business and thought it was a unique way to promote and advertise her business. Any catering event that she gets or looks to her site from people seeing on my jersey is free advertising and I get paid in that way by promoting her. The jersey is also comfortable and light weight as well.
I wear a ranger one and I do not get paid or benefit in anyway by wearing it at most tournaments. I wear it because I love ranger boats and I am proud to own one. I also have an older one that I thought about putting a bunch of patches on and wearing that. It just gets me in the competive mood. Plus I will never be a pro fisherman so at least I can look and feel like one once in awhile!
I don't think I will every purchase a jersey per say, but I am in the process of customizing a lightweight sweatshirt that will have one of my sponsors on it.
Being a part of the business gives me great joy to represent them as much as possible.
What does get under my skin is how the younger generation, in a lot of cases, feels that they cannot be successful without getting as many sponsors on their jersey as possible. I cannot tell you how many kids have contacted me asking to put NorthStar's logo on their jersey, and when I ask them how are you going to promote our company? and what tournaments are you going to fish? They don't have an answer.
My mentality has always been focus on fishing and the sponsors will come.
I have a couple of jerseys that I wear. I wear one for my local bass club when I fishing tournaments with them. Secondly, I am getting another jersey through Bassresource to wear at FLW events. I do this for a couple of reasons. I do not have sponsors and I feel like it's not a sponsorship, they are partnerships. I do not get paid, but I wear my jersey to support the products that I use and using smaller local based companies gives them exposure. This is my second year tournament fishing and in the event that I am successful and place fairly high, the possibility of attracting attention and partnerships are good.
Looking into getting a jersey this year... For no reason other than the comfort of the garment. Nothing crazy custom because I don't fish a whole lot of bass tournaments, but I still want to have a cool shirt when I'm out fishing. These guys said they would come up with some cool fake "flat bottom mafia" and "redneck" logos for me if I wanted. Anyone ever heard of them? www.atomicfishingjerseys.com
Having two jerseys made for Christmas. One for me and the other for my older brother. The logos I chose are from companies whose lure/equipment/etc. we like or because they were a great design that fit in with the type of fishing we do. Can't wait until they come in.
Not to be an arse but the companies that sponsor me require a written approval (and they supply the logo file) to have their name or logo placed on a jersey. They also have final say on the jersey design. Most manufacturers know this. Quality companies want to have control over who is parading around with their name plastered all over their jersey. I'm sure some are fine but I'm also sure there are some that most companies wouldn't want the perception they represent the brand. Wearing logos just because you use the product should be limited to the logo gear you can buy direct from the manufacturer. If you like them and want to support them buy their merchandise. That way the logo is correct and you are not making a "perceived" statement that you are a spokesman for the company.
Hello @Dan_in_Texas and Welcome to Bass Resource ~

I'm not the jersey wearing type, but I do have an Abu Garcia sweatshirt, tee shirt, and a couple hats. I've seen Abu Garcia and several other companies sell jerseys with their branding plastered all over it for sale to the average Joe. How is this any different?
I see and understand your point about representing a company in the most professional manner. By selling shirts, hats, decals to anyone is getting them free advertising, Who objects to that? Again I see what you're saying and one bad apple can spoil the bushel, so what's the difference between my Abu sweatshirt and hat and the weekend tourney angler with no sponsors but a custom made jersey with his favorite products on it? Do the companies really care?
The difference is when you load up a jersey with logos you look like you are sponsored but when you buy a company's branded product or the company's branded merchandise (yes even jerseys) you look like you support the company. By purchasing the company's branded product, the manufacturer can make sure the logo is correct and 2. Branded merchandise sold to the public is normally a single product garment. ABU for example on a Jersey manufactured by ABU and sold by ABU won't have Yamamoto, Gamakatsu, Strike King, etc., on it as well. I have no problem with the product branded and sold by the manufacturers. Buy it and wear it proudly!! It's when those products get lumped together in a single jersey that makes the difference. You might think you are doing a good thing for the manufacturer but when somebody comes up to you and asks about a technical question about a product or about the company since you are sporting them on your jersey and you can't answer the question, then you have made a negative impression. "Branding" is a tricky subject and you really don't want negative impressions. I have studied Yamamoto for example, I know the company and it's executives, I've been to the manufacturing plant, I know their entire product line and if I get asked a question I can't answer, I can ask someone who knows. I know some of the Pro's have complained about rampant advertising by low level anglers but I really don't agree with their point that it takes sponsorship deals away from them. I do agree with the manufacturers that they need to control who "represents" their brand. Not all press is good press.

If that is something you would like to wear go for it wear it proudly dont bother with what some tool says about what you spend your money on. Make sure SHIMANO is prominently placed.
Who cares what other people think. Rapala accepted my online application to join their field staff as a VIP member. I get discounts (up to 60% off in some cases) for all of rapala and their other brands (storm, terminator, vmc, sufix, etc.) for a much better price than what it would cost me in a retail store or tackle shop. In return, I have their decals on my boat and truck, and I try to wear either a hat or shirt/jersey with their logo in every tournament I fish. I feel like that is the least I could do as a way to stay thank you for accepting my application. Not only that, but I generally like their brands. They don't write me a check to wear their stuff, but I know why i do it. I feel like it's the least I could do. I could care less what other people think about my showing their brand.
I like Biospawn's soft plastics so much that I emailed them and asked them if they minded if I display their logo on a jersey. In return, they not only gave me permission to do so they also mailed me free decals to display on my boat. As a thank you I told them I will not only proudly display their brand, but I will also promote them on my social media as much as I can. They don't write me a check for doing it, but I feel like I should as a thank you for the free decals as they certainly didn't have to do that.
Don't get caught up in what other people think. Do what you feel is right and fish your way.
Hey its not like me to respond to posts like this....but first...my kid got one of the bass pro shops jerseys they sell in the catalog now. then he emailed a bunch of companies and requested patches. he and his mom took then to a seamstress and had them sewn on. He then surprised me with my birthday present. He wanted me to have a pro **** because the columbia pfg shirt i wear had no patches like the guys on tv. Think I dont wear that shirt? Or care who thinks I am a tool for wearing it? And besides...I play softball with friends wearing a red sox shirt. It does put you in the state of mind.
the real question is when will MLF or BASS or any of them start selling legit replica shirts?

Some of the pros already do if you want to cough up a couple hundred bucks for one.
Here's what I had made.

Nice! I dig that pattern!
The only way anyone will have there name on me is if they are paying me or giving me free tackle. I play a lot of golf and it always seems like the guy that shows up in a Ricky Fowler outfit and a Cart bag can't play a lick. The guy that shows up in wore out khaki shorts and a rough looking polo with a stand bag and rusted up clubs is the guy who can play the game. Everyone is to worried about looking cool instead of being good at there chosen sport.

I'm gonna go ahead and say I will back up how "cool" I may or may not look by dropping a 5 pounder on the deck. But when I do, I will tell my kid the shirt he made was why....

LOL.... I don't.. but thanks
I’ve got to chime in on this. I have four fishing jerseys and I were them a lot.but I don’t tournament fish except once a year.I do it because I like the products or they look good.I have 2 shimono my favorite jerseys but I don’t have any of their gear they just look good keep me cool and dry. I also dress in golf shirts but I’m 13 handicap for me it’s comfort. I would gladly pay for a replica of the MLF jerseys just like I do for football and I barley watch football anymore that’s just my 2cents though.

Probably not the best sentence, to critique someone else's grammar.
We are not all English majors.

We know what you meant. Fish on.
Fish on.
I helped start up my university’s fishing team after I had to leave the football team due to being continuously injured.
Our first “jerseys” were long sleeve Magellan button downs with our name and school logo ironed on. ???? We eventually got one with our team logo and name screen printed on, but what is out there today is head and shoulders above what we scraped together.
I don’t wear fishing jerseys but I do wear the long sleeve synthetic fishing shirts and a hooded version since I have rosacea and at an increased risk of skin cancer.
