read an article in my new bassMaster magazine yesterday and read that some pro anglers are now using the "BioSonix" unit. What this unit does, there is a speaker in the water that gives off sounds that distressed baitfish make which increases predatory instincts in bass. Anglers such as Kevin Van Dam and a fewother pros are starting to use them. I dont know exactly how new this is, this might be a pointless post but. I honestly think that is cheating. Fishing tournaments your supposed to go find the fish, the fish arent supposed to come to you ....of course you will still have to find fish to use the unit.
In the article it said that, there have been records of bass swimming up and hitting the boat because of the sound waves this thing gives off. I personally think this is cheating and it shouldnt be allowed in tournaments, i mean if the thnigs are really expensive its a joke. Anglers on a tight budget shouldnt have to worry about someone having one of theese, its already bad enough when your fishing against anglers with gps systems, ridiculously good sonars and other crazy gear?
What do you guys think? I think they have taken it too far, this aggervates me. > :( :-/
QuoteWhat do you guys think?
I think if it worked, people using it would be winning every tournament... and that's not the case. Even if it did work, I like fishing, not shooting fish in a barrel. If you caught countless fish everytime out, it would be working out, not fishing. ....lol
QuoteIn the article it said that, there have been records of bass swimming up and hitting the boat because of the sound waves this thing gives off.
That sounds like some marketing guy made it up... fish story? ...lol
Didn't hear about them this year did we? I don't think they allowed them on tour this year.
Its not cheating when everyone has access to get one. I don't think they should be allowed personally, but also don't have anything against them either.
matt
I doubt you will ever see anything that is manufactured and sold ever banned from a BASS tournament.
That is what the professional circuit is all about.......selling products.
The only thing you will find banned from pro tours is live bait.
Unless of course Mann's or Normark figure out a way to have them manufactured in China.
I'm not opposed to it at all, wish I could afford one.
If the unit is banned, what's next to be banned, the lure that claims to mimic baitfish sounds or movements or scents that claim to smell like bait?
Isn't that what every lure manufacturer claims?
Correct me if I'm mistaken, but I believe Kevin VanDam was using the Biosonix when he won his 3 tournaments in a row at the end of last season. I know he used it this year as well. He says he can definitely tell a difference with it. Personally, I wouldn't use one.
i dont really like the ideah that the fish are atracted to the sound and not how well you fishing that day, seems cheap :-/
I'm sure I've also heard KVD talk about using it in some of the tourneys. I've seen them in BPS catalog and they are EXPENSIVE! More than I can afford. Can't really say I'm against it though.
Doug
I know KVD is sponsored by Biosonix, Biosonix web site said 14 out of 105 boats on the Elite series used them this year, I'd like to know which ones so we can compare their success rates as to others who didn't have one.
Matt.
I know the word tournament is used in his original post, but shouldnt this be in general bassing or boat or tackle? i dont know, i wouldnt have known where to put it either. :-X
OKAY this is what I WANNA KNOW.
as far as i know the BioSonix unit is just a audio playback device with several underwater speakers, right?
what if you could record the same sound that the BioSonix uses, and hook your boombox, radio, etc.. up to some underwater speakers. whats the difference between the BioSonix and that?
i really hope someone can shed some light on this, ive been wondering about that idea for along time.
thanks
Brush
You woud be using an underwater speaker vs ordinary speakers. ie.....waterproof.
Matt.
mattfly, maybe my post was too a mess to read. sorry i do that alot when im talkin about an idea or something
As far as what you said, both the BioSonix and my idea would have underwater speakers.
my idea : Record baitfish sound onto cd. Hook cd up to any reciever and then to acouple underwater speakers. Maybe mounted to the trolling motor or something.

This is true. I spoke with Randy VanDam (Kevin's brother and owner of D & R Sportscenter) and he's claimed to have the same thing. Problem is though, the fish come after the noise, not his bait!

All true statements.

I couldn't agree more. I wish I had one!

Yes but those bass were White Bass not any species of Black bass...
Also you didn't state all the article said...If this Biosonix was that good for BASS anglers wouldn't all the other anglers get one? If everyone has one it levels the playing field. Also it said that it isn't automatic. You have to take out the right sound for the right situation. You can't just throw on any sound and the bass come running. Just like a lure. You gotta have the right color, type of bait, retrieve etc. etc. You can't just put anything on there throw it out and catch 20 fish in an hour. Also the thing can't be used for ever, only in short bursts. If you leave it on for to long you can spook the bass....then your really screwed. They weren't biting before. Now you put this "magic" tool on and make it worse! ;D
So anyway. I wouldn't get one because it is too exspensive. If that article is being truthful then Biosonix is another tool that you have to know how to use for it to be effective. Just like a new lure or presentation. It isn't automatic out of the box.

Good reply. I too agree that it's just another tool and has to be used in the right situation.
It always amazes me about what people can be sucked into believing!!!

I agree, but there's no rocket science involved in determining when to turn the thing on and off.
Man...I don't even use sonar (fish finders). Or a boat for that matter! Sure, they are tools that will, or should I say can, greatly increase your success. But whatever happened to the good old way of fishing? You know...just you, the fish, and maybe a boat. I guess technology will spoil anyone. I can't say I wouldn't use it if I had it. However, I think it would be more gratifying to do it on your own, with no electronics. But that's just me. Of course if there is money on the line, I'm taking every advantage I can get.
I agree with Matt Fly. If everyone has access to it, it's not cheating.
I don't remember the first "advanced" electronics. But when the first fish finder came out i'd imagine this type of reaction happened. Now look they are everywhere and they get better and better every day.
Quote. If this Biosonix was that good for BASS anglers wouldn't all the other anglers get one?
Not everyone can afford this thing.
I dont believe anyhting should ever be banned from the tournament trail, its just a bad upset they allowed it in the first place. To me this is such a shame.
My point is the succesful angler should not be determined by his budget and how many good electronics he has.
To me it seems like electronics are taking a lot of fun out of finding your bass, not the bass coming to you.
I mean think about it, how much skill can you possibly have if electronics are taking skill out of the picture.
I cannot see how anyone would think this is cheating. This is like saying anyone that use Lucky Craft lures or a good DF is cheating because they are expensive. Anyone can go out and buy a Biosonix. It is just a pice of equipment just like a rod or reel or a boat.

Have you ever watched Shark fishing? They use chum, chum lures fish to the boat then they throw a hunk of meat out and it eats it..same concept, just takes longer. Also this thing is not automatic, you still gotta be throwing the right bait. Just because the bass are there doesn't mean they will eat anything you throw at them. Its not a piece of magic, its a tool. The fish are coming to the sound not the lure or you. And like I said, you still have to apply the right sound the amount of time you play it etc etc for it to work. It stated that in the article. It can also make the fish turnoff or spook them if you don't use it properly. And this thing costs 699.99, i'm sure if it were as good as you make it out to be everyone on the tour would find a way to scrape up 700 buckaroos for this thing. Thats a lot of money but not that much.
I don't think it is cheating, it is just another high cost peice of equipment that is available to anyone who wants to pay for it.
I am one of the guys who is sucked in to belieivng this thing works. Hunters have successfully used calls to hunt many types of game, and I don't see how this could be any different. My concern is knowing how to use it properly. One thing it stated in one of the articels that I read, is that you can choose from several different sounds ie., sounds of different types of baitfish in distress, bass feeding in different modes. I would be concerned about putting the wrong sound on at any given time(like fishingrulz sd). They had done some limited studies(with loose controls imo) that showed where it helped the fish catching in some scenarios and made it worse in some scenarios and had little or no effect yet in another area. I believe there is a potential to help or hurt your fishing with this thing, kind of a catch 22. I think I will wait a few years to buy one and see if they can get the bugs worked out.
QuoteHunters have successfully used calls to hunt many types of game, and I don't see how this could be any different.
I guess it's hard to prove if the biosonix actually works... (I'm a total skeptic) it's not like hunting since you can't share the space.... you can't hide in a brushpile and blow a shad bleat or rattle in a bass. ...lol Besides, hunting calls are not replicating feed, they work the social or breeding aspects... although they do have a corn feeder call now! What has the world come to?!?!?!? ;D
And to those who say it's expensive, it cost less than many of the good GPS graphs... if it worked, every tournament pro and most weekend tourney anglers (and many rec anglers) would have them.
What if you could tweak the frequency and tune it to perhaps....Here fishy, fishy, get in the boat. With a sexy fish voice. You would have a switch to change from male to female. Hmm??
This thing and that one soldiers idea of mounting a FLIR unit to the boat. You are set.
Optional M2 mount ofcourse.
Nuts, just plain nuts.
Had a huge cigarette boat buzz me while fishing a bridge. From the moment you could begin to feel the vibration of that boat, the bait fish and predatory fish started going nuts. I managed to catch a few, but nothing spectatcular. To quote the article initially mentioned, "A Finger in a Fist". I am short a finger cause I dont have one of these YET!

You get the plane tickets and someone to put us up and I'LL buy the darn gadget, lol.
