Jerkbait For Smallies 2024

fishing user avatarfisherrw reply :

What's you fav jerkbait for smallies?

fishing user avatarScott F reply :

Lucky Craft Pointer. A lot of guys here like the bigger ones but I do extremely well in the spring up north when the water hits 50 degrees with a 78 or often a 65.

fishing user avatarCCfootballchamps69 reply :

There are a lot of jerbaits out there on the market. Some are relatively cheap while others are expensive. Dont' forget soft plastic jerk baits as well. My favorite have been rapala and strike king. You cant beat a good lucky craft pointer however. They catch more fish than any of the other jerkbaits on the market. For the price I would throw smithwick rogue jerkbaits I have had success with those.

fishing user avatarBluebasser86 reply :

Luck E Strike RC Stix in French Pearl or Lucky Craft Slender Pointer 97 MR in Gunmetal shad.

fishing user avatarCrestliner2008 reply :

Another vote for the Pointer series here.

fishing user avatarsmalljaw67 reply :

I use a few, it all depends on the fish but generally when the water temp is 43 to 45 degrees, I like the Pointer and the RC STX because the suspend really well which is very important in the lower water temps. 46 to 50 degrees I like both a Rattlin' Rogue and an X-Rap.

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

Most of the time it is think big or go home. Pointer 128, pointer 127 or pointer 100. I like big smithwicks & big rapala husky jerks. Also big rebels. Deep divers & shallow divers in any bait that makes both. That's not all of my favorites but does cover the majority.

. . . And if they don't hit a big one be sure to try a Pointer 78.

Will maybe I should. I have never bought or fished a pointer 78.

fishing user avatarJ Francho reply :

I don't actually like the action of the 78. It does better on walleye with a straight retrieve than smallies. That might be an effect of wherei throw them - primarily Oneida and some of the canals best me.

fishing user avatarsmallieking reply :

lucky craft pointer 100. great action and casts a mile. it also gets about a foot deeper than most other tradition jerkbaits.

my favorite largemouth and spotted bass jerkbait is the megabass vision 110 but last year i caught alot of brown dudes on it so its my go to jerkbait when im on a lake that has a mix of big smallies and largies

Dwight, what do you think of the Slender Pointer (action / casting)?

Roger

fishing user avatarDwight Hottle reply :

Roger I have one whole plano box filled with them. I just wished they made a 127 deep diver as well. Both the 128 & 127 fish about the same depth. The 128 has more of a shad shape with a deeper profile. The 127 is more of a smelt bait profile in my opinion. The 128's weigh 1 oz & the 127's weight 7/8 oz I believe. They both cast great because of the weight & overall size. The 128 has a louder rattle which you actually hear in shallow water as it resonates off an aluminum  boat hull. We get a lot of fish off the hang or dead stick rod with the 127's while drifting. It is a good casting bait with hard jerks or big swings.

Just in case you ever get the chance the 128 in black back with blue sides (auroa black) is a killer for pike.

fishing user avatarRoLo reply :

Thank you Dwight, that answers all my questions.
It definitely does resemble a smelt (she's going on my next order)

Nothing beats a good old Smithwick Rogue! I still have a bunch of them in perfect shape with a few of my own mods.

Megabass vision 110. All colors are great. No doubt the best jerkbait on the market.

fishing user avatarfisherrw reply :

Thanks for all the feed back guys I appreciate it!! I'm probably gonna pick up some lc pointers.

Which one? The KVD?
fishing user avatarRon Kruger reply :

KVD is a better size for smallmouths, but I use the big one a lot too. All Strike King baits are quality. They last and they run true.

Actually, my favorite winter bait for smallmouth these days is the Mini-King spinner bait, fished slowly and allowed to drop and run along the bottom.

Favorite summer bait for smallmouths is a Road Runner.

High quality, great colors, and they catch fish. I don't own any but I know they work!
fishing user avatarfisherrw reply :

Still though 25 is a little much.. If I lost that I would through a tantrum.

Ya I agree. Heard they have a problem with the bills breaking. I'm sticking with pointers for now at least.
fishing user avatarHogsticker reply :

You guys are missing out on so many great smallie slayers in this thread!

Spro McStick 95

Duo Realis 100,float and suspend

Ima Flit 100 - Everyone should own at least one

My home run hitter the 2nd half of 2014 was the Yo Zuri 3DB jerkbaits. When I went catching bronze backs on it I was hauling in some healthy rainbows and German Browns

Last one I had was a 110 magnum (nearly $30 a bait). The bill just fell off during the retrieve at Table Rock (clear water so I'm 100% sure it never hit a thing). Never touched anything on the cast or the retrieve, I just went to twitch it and it popped to the surface. I assumed I'd caught my front hook on the line, I wish that's all it was. I can't buy a $25 bait that mysteriously falls apart. If I smack a rock on a cast and break it, fine, I'll eat that one for bad cast, but falling apart doing what I'm supposed to do with it?

fishing user avatarfisherrw reply :

Yea I think I'll stick with pointers.

Take it back to the retailer for exchange or send it to Megabass. I have never had

an issue with the Ito Vision 110 or any brand other than Smithwick. Smithwick or the

retailer have replaced lures without any argument.

Academy, Luck E Strike, and Spro make cheaper alternatives you can try. I recommend the Academy H20's because they don';t need any tuning, adjustments, or hooks. For the price you can't beat them.

Wasn't in the mood to argue with the folks at BPS (didn't keep my receipt) and it wasn't worth mailing to Megabass and potentially dealing with the same issue repeatedly. I'm really satisfied with the LES and H2O jerkbaits that have a really similar profile as the 110's, I just need them to make a bigger version to match the 110 magnum.

I agree on both points. Had a 110 blow up on me once and it's not worth me shipping to mb so they can "look" at it and come up with their own conclusion. I will stick with the other brands

fishing user avatarPAGreg reply :

Lucky Craft pointer 78. Going to give the 100 a try this year.

fishing user avatarfisherrw reply :

Is that the deep diver version?

fishing user avatarAngry John reply :

Luck-e-strike DUO and lc pointers. If that does not get it done I go with a different bait

fishing user avatarBrian Brazier reply :

Spro Mcrip, Mcstick, X Raps, Shadow Rap, Megabass Vision 110 and Ito, I have never had a Megabass bill fall or break off, I have 12 or so, if one does I have delt with MB before, and they were top notch. I am having trouble finding a MB Vision 110 color for a clear lake that I fish allot, anyone have a suggestion? I was thinking a French Pearl, either the French Pearl Oblique or Sexy. There are allot of Rainbow Trout, some Kokanee, Sunfish, and Yellow Perch n the lake, and they I know they like yellow perch. Any assistance is appreciated.

fishing user avatarBrian Brazier reply :

Dont know how I forgot to add the jerkbait that has caught my biggest Smallies, Koppers Livetarget Smallmouth. Smallmouth are carnivorous fish, and when they spawn they create their own forage. I have caught my 2 biggest Smallies the one in my avatar a 4+lb, and a 3.5lb, during and post spawn, but it works year round.
