Ever wonder what rednecks do for fun? We snag gar.
This one went 51 inches, and 22 lbs. When I hooked him I thought I had a monster asian carp, but then he jumped clear out of the water and gave me the evil eye. The fight lasted a good 15 minutes. We left the net at home, so my buddy put on some gloves and grabbed him by the snout. I had to return the favor when he snagged a 21 pounder a few minutes later.
The Missouri record for pole and line is 27 pounds and change...does snagging count as pole and line?...either way, I'm pretty sure I know where bigger ones swim, and now is the time as they are FAT, full of carp and eggs.
So what's a redneck do with a gar after he catches it? He eats it of course. It's not crappie, but it aint all bad...
Actually, I tried a couple pieces and gave the rest to the dog.
THATS A MONSTER!!! I couldn't imagine catching anything that big. Nice job man
wow, I bet that was fun. lol.
whoa... i didn't expect to open this thread and see such a huge fish... gj... the fish is almost as tall as you... lol...
Awesome Gar, dude!!!!!!
Thats one awesome looking gar.
nice catch. What do you use to snag them? I have some places where I'd love to thin out the gar population.
Quotenice catch. What do you use to snag them? I have some places where I'd love to thin out the gar population.
Pretty basic setup.
Heavy gear (spinning or baitcasting)
A long rod for long casts
Braided line that won't stretch on the hookset
Mono leader that you can break off when you need to
2 x 11/0 treble hooks and a 1 oz weight at the bottom
Then just cast beyond the fish, reel in the slack and set the hook hard, then just keep repeating. You will break a good sweat. They are tough to land, we probably hooked 12 and landed 2.
Snagging is only legal here at certain times of the year. Other times try a nylon rope rig like this...or make your own.

I am surprised you can actually snag them. They have those tough ganoid scales that are like armor plating.
That's a nice looking gar. Much bigger than I usually catch or even see.
Nice fish Daniel, I tried it one, that I caught out of my ditch when we had a lot of rain, them thing are nasty, but the ones I had (tasted) where small, no more than 15 20 inches.
I was fishing with a friend in his lakes on the 100 acres behind his house, it could have been, even bigger than that one, he recently got a john boat and a hummin' bird, so some time we are gonna go gar hunting! And just curios what what did you did you catch it on, snag it on, or what ever?

I have another method for gar fishing. Alot less work too. Cut a piece of white braided rope about 4" long and whip tie ie to a 1/0 hook shank next to the eye. Laquer the wrap tie afterwards. Unravel and fray the rope. Cast on spinning gear. Reel it on or near surface of water. The frayed rope tangles in the gar's teeth and they can't throw the lure. You can cut off the hook to make it weedless, but bass and other fish may strike lure also and then you'll want that hook. Happy fishing. 8-)

anybody else think those look like mcdonalds chicken mcnuggets....
that thing is huge
That is nice! I remeber the Gar when I lived in Arkansas. Here we have carp that go over 20lbs to go catch, and lots of them.
You should try to actually fish for these, instead of snagging them. They are great fun using a tangle baits (described above) and a fly rod.

Surprised to see this old thread come back to life...but thanks for the comments.
We have fished for these in the past, in fact I actually referenced a nylon rope lure earlier in the thread.
On the day I got this one we were targeting Silver Carp, which you just about cannot catch without snagging or shooting with a bow.
DMB, ever see the episode of In-Fisherman when Stange catches this beast?

Holy carp THAT'S a gar! Looks like maybe an alligaor/longnose hybrid?
I'd love to hook into an alligator gar. I know they sometimes make it this far north, but I haven't been that lucky yet.
I love bass fishing, but I still get a kick out of catching rough fish.
Nope, straight up Alligator Gar. That was the "little" one they caught.

nice fish wish i could grab one

Only a couple of pieces? Did it not satisify your taste buds?
Must have been one heck of a fight. Nice!
Snagging is not sport.
We have these in Lake Wylie. My friend catches them with Minnows. They are fun to fight, just dont try to pull a 4 ft gar into your jon boat. I know a dude who just pulled it out and dropped it into his crowded boat.
I guess half the folks jumped out. LOL. From the description they gave me, I WISH I had some video of that.

It tasted like fish mixed with rubber bands.
Gator gar fishing is fun, if you can get bit. Ive caught a few of them on large dead baits. Use something like 1/2 of a 12" gizzard shad or some other large cut bait. You can fish on the bottom or use a slip float. You will also need a wire leader, they have nasty teeth and heavy bite pressure.
nice gar !
Nice gar 8-)
nice gar
I've never been gar fishing but I do love to see all the pictures! They are so interesting to me. How do they taste?
Hmmmm.... I would NOT want to be bit by those choppers!!! ;D ;D
nice fish
Dang, that is one heck of a gar. I haven't been able to get one on rod and reel, but slay them while bow fishing, still put up a great fight.
