Somewhere you just can't catch a bass. 2024

fishing user avatarBankBassing reply :

There is a perfect looking spot near a local marina.  A current break with some structure that stays shaded till late morning.  Bait fish everywhere.  I know there has to be a bass in there or nearby, and it's a great spot to fish, but never even a bite.

Is there somewhere that you just KNOW there are bass but you've never been able to land one?

fishing user avatarN Florida Mike reply :

There's a pond I know that's stocked, which is across the road from another, bigger pond that's also stocked.10 years ago or so ago they drained the bigger pond and put most of the fish in the smaller pond.( I was told this by the game warden that lives there on site.)

Anyway,if you didn't know better you would think there is no bass in it.My son and me caught a few one day.I had a fish break my line one day.Other than that, nothing.I put my boat in last winter  and fished very slowly around the whole thing without anything but one tap from a bream. Not a swirl,no sign of anything. But I believe there must be some huge, old fish in there.Live bait may be the best solution .

The water is fairly murky in both the ponds ,which is in contrast with most of the other lakes around here. The fishing in the bigger pond is always slow too,but you usually catch 2-3 in a few hours at least. These ponds are one of the few around that are actually managed by the state experts but the bass fishing there has always been probably the worse of any I fish. Its mysteriously slow. Its also the one place I fish that gives me the creeps.Im always looking over my shoulder there.

fishing user avatarTorn Thumb reply :

The lake 5 minutes from my house. I caught about 6-7 good smallies there last year after ice-out but that's about it. Otherwise maybe 10 or so rock bass since I was a little kid. I watched a kid pull out a 7 pounder maybe 10 years ago and a ton of trout come out just after stocking but I strike out there alot. 9 times out of 10 the most productive bank spots are taken. I'll give it more of a chance this fall.

Haven't found a place where bass live that I can't catch them yet.

fishing user avatarsoflabasser reply :

A person is not going to catch many bass if they spend more time fishing on the Internet than they do fishing on the water.

I doubt anyone here is choosing to be online rather than on the water if they have the choice.

My pool is  awfully difficult to catch a bass in. For some reason I keep throwing new lures in  hoping to get a bite.

Might also catch a "brown trout" in the sewer.

Heh...yeah. Gotta be careful fishing there.

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

When I was a kid, i used to walk to a creek and catch these little chubs we called "horny heads" because of the little bumps they had on the head. I branched out and found a nearby pond down in the woods where obviously, no one was watching. It was crystal clear and chock full of 4-6 lb (looking) bass. But they could see you from all angles and there was absolutely no way to not alert them to my presence. I went several times and managed only one strike on a spinnerbait and the fish spit it before I could set. If I were to go now, I'd probably catch a bucket of those chubs at the creek and take them to the pond for bait or I'd use a whole nightcrawler on a free line. I imagine bass are like squirrels and will forget you if you don't move for a few minutes. I just have a hard time fishing really slowly.

I had a pond as a kid that was smaller and spring fed. Used to irritate me when you walked up and watched fish take off. I literally found a big rock to hide behind as a kid and killed a bunch of huge crappie with a yellow Mepps casting over the rock.

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

It may not happen when I visit a new fishing spot for the first time, but sooner or later I am going to catch a bass out of that body of water.

I also visited a place in the mountains that had several ponds on the property with gin clear water that I'm sure see a lot of lures. What I did there was wait until sunset and cast from one end all the way to the other with finesse baits and caught a few. They simply wouldn't bite in the daytime. But the bluegill would attack anything I threw.

Big bait, big fish...

fishing user avatargeo g reply :

When things are really tough, slow way down and throw a 4" senko watermelon red, or a zoom trick worm.  Throw it with a 1/32 bullet weight so it slow falls through the entire water column, and  they get a good look at it..  Fish slow, just vibrate it and let it sit.  Then try wacky rig and let it sit.   If that doesn't work, move on to different waters.  These techniques will catch fish when nothing else works in waters all over the south.  Good luck, it can be a challenge at times.:idea2:
