does anyone fish after 2 a.m.? 2024

fishing user avatardday07 reply :

i was thinking of fishing this week on the full moon after 2 a.m. till about 7 a.m.has anyone tried this before and have you had much success? thanks!

fishing user avatarMarc David reply :

Yes, I have fished through the night with success. It's quite common, especially in areas that are extremely hot during the day, that people will prefer to night fish. My go to baits are a black jitterbug or large plastic worm when fishing in the dark.

fishing user avatarGrey Wolf reply :

My largest bass was caught between 4-5am on a red terminator spinner bait.

fishing user avatarDock Master reply :

It's VERY popular during the summer.  I have never done it though.

fishing user avatarRobE reply :

Provided I don't have to work (oops, bad word!) the next day, there's nothing I enjoy more during the Summer than an all-nighter. I get on the water about an hour before sunset and cruise over some of my fave holes checking on activity. By sunset, I've usually found where I want to start and will anchor there until dark. I'll throw a few non-disturbing baits (T-rigged worms, etc) just to get a feel of the bottom and see if there's any interest. Or I may not anchor and probe nearby brushpiles for Crappie until dark. Whatever I do, I'm quiet about it.

On Lake Norfork, I've found that the bite usually turns on about 10 pm and may last until 2 am under a big moon. If I'm not getting hit in that spot, I'll try a couple of others. If that fails, I'll pull out the Walleye gear and give that a go. If that fails, it's back to crappie on brushpiles.

I like to eat at about 2 unless I'm busy  8-) .

About 4 am, things usually pick up again until the Sun hits the water. This period can often be stretched by fishing west-facing bluffs that cast morning shadows.

On the rare occasion that I just CAN NOT leave, the Crappie keep me entertained until almost Noon except on the hottest of days.

I say, Go for it, dday!

fishing user avatarkms399 reply :

i usually try to be on the water around 3 and depending on the moon and weather it is clear skies or not we have had some great times.

fishing user avatarStasher1 reply :

I typically work out from midnight to about 2 am, so on the nights I just don't feel like working out I hit a little county pond with t-rigged 4" worms and small spinnerbaits. The mosquitos are awful and the chiggers are even worse, but the fishing is actually pretty good. Deep Woods Off can be your best friend on nights like that. ;)

fishing user avatarhoot3384 reply :

jitter bugs work wonders in the dark, i caught my biggest smallie during those times.

fishing user avatarRockNBass reply :

I've had some great night fishing during the spring in marinas, but have not had the chance to do the same in the summer.

fishing user avatarhoot3384 reply :

btw when I was night fishing I was on a dock, still landed my pb smallie though.

fishing user avatar-FisherGal- reply :

ha ha......if you consider yourself a fisherman and you do fish alot I dont know how you havent fished after 2am.....lol.

fishing user avatarDaniel My Brother reply :

I like late night fishing, but when the bite is slow it feels like time just stops. Anybody else notice this?

fishing user avatargrimlin reply :

I fish mostly parks and lakes with curfews. They are all closed from around 10pm-6am. :(

fishing user avatarCatt reply :

Moon rise to moon set ;)

Although most of our tournaments are over by 3:00am, most of our club tournaments from May until September are at night, the boat traffic on Smith Mountain lake can be vicious during the day and the bite is normally pretty good at night. We also do pretty good striper fishing at night as well. Several of the guys I know fish after 2:00am and claim to do well.

I loved Smith Mountain Lake, and the boat traffic was pretty bad during the day but nothing compared to Boone.

thanks for all the replies and will let you all know how it went.

I have had some of the best times fishing little ponds at 3 in the morning catching giant after giant.. One pond I fish at night is probably only about 100yrds long by 50yrds, and if you don't catch 50+ LM's in an hour or 2, your doing something wrong. Don't forget to bring your black spinnerbaits with a single colorado blade and your all black walking baits.

if your going to fish that late, fish a private/illegal pond. they are private for a reason, big bass. Also, being chased by security guards at 2am for bass fishing is pretty badass. Don't forget to bring your black spinnerbaits with a single colorado blade and your all black walking baits.

I always fish after 2:00 A.M.  Come to think of it, I always fish after 6:00 A.M.  :D

fishing user avatarCulln5 reply :

I do my fair share of night fishing here during the sumer.  With the higher water temps during the day and the lack of pressure at night, it gives me an opportunity to fish more aggressively.  Make sure you go prepared.  Leave the sunscreen at home and bring some bug spray, lights (flashlight, blacklight, etc).

fishing user avatarwhitwolf reply :

A buddy and myself fish many Summer nights usually from 9pm to 9am. Black or red shad 8" big dead ringers, crankbaits, beaver baits, and jigs.

To me this Is the best time to fish as the heat and boat traffic are bearable. The serenity and cooler tempatures are a real plus.

fishing user avatarlooking4structure reply :

I've fished after 2am many time.I have decent luck on dark colored buzzbait and big plastics.Make sure you bring your bug spray and some sort of lite so you can tie your knots.

Getting to the ramp at the crack of 9 AM to catch the mid-morning bite is after 2 AM.  ;)

fishing user avatarcentral_fl_fishin reply :

Night fishing under a full moon or around docks with lights is awesome.  The biggest bass I ever hooked up with was in the grass edge of a lake where the large lights on the dock were shining over, it was probably 2 - 3am.  Plus, the fish always seem bigger than they are it seems.  Maybe because it's harder to see.  But it is fun.

fishing user avatartimothy_spain reply :

Once it's completely dark ... they stop biting for me.  Though I did hit my personal best smallie at night on a jitterbug too.  But it wasn't past 2AM though
