New Cabelas 2024

fishing user avatar*Hootie reply :

Just visited our new Cabelas store, near Cincinnati. Gotta say I was disappointed. I guess maybe I was expecting to much, based on what I had heard about them. I still prefer BPS.

Hootie

fishing user avatarthe reel ess reply :

Same here in Fort Mill, SC (near Charlotte, NC). It was basically BPS Lite. But I have a friend working there who gave me his 20% discount at a pre-Grand Opening Sale. I still managed to spend $200.

fishing user avatardavecon reply :

BPS opened about a month ago in Brandon, Fl. That's only about 7 miles from my house and it's great. Finally have a decent selection close to home.

fishing user avatarHurricane reply :

I love the one that opened here in Buffalo.. Beats Dicks Sporting Goods..

fishing user avatarNotnatsSamoht reply :

Same in Waco, bps is an hour away, we have cabelas and gander mountain in town and the fishing department is small for both, academy has best fishing department here.

Very true. But we already had an Academy that beat the doors off Dick's. I'm not sure I need to ride 20 miles more up the interstate just to get a tiny bit better fishing selection at Cabela's. Now, if it was hunting, shooting, boating or camping, maybe Cabela's wins out over Academy. For fishing, Academy usually has me covered.

fishing user avatarJames Pondscum reply :

On the Cabelas it seems to mater what size store.  Have a large size cabelas about fifteen miles north has  a much more diverse selection then the BPS which is about fifteen miles south.   Depends on what your looking for.  Bps stores seem to be all large as cabelas have some lower square footage stores.  Are gandermoutain area store no longer carries fishing equipment and are local DSG,S are very week.  I don't even go to the Cabelas on the weekend as  their are too many people.

fishing user avatarSenko lover reply :

I honestly don't even like BP that much, Cabelas isn't that much better. TW fan here......not that I don't mind a trip to Bass Pro :D

fishing user avatardesmobob reply :

You guys are lucky... there isn't a BPS or Cabelas within about three hours of where I live; farther for Cabela's.  Thank God for the Internet and the USPS!  ;-)

Tight lines,

Bob

fishing user avatarkadas reply :

Hootie, I have visited several of the Cabela's stores around the country including their "home" store in Nebraska--never have been impressed with them--I always thought their prices were higher than BPS and I include Gander mountain in that thinking--nothing wrong with any of them--I just do not go to Cabela's or Gander Mountain anymore because they are higher priced if they have what you are looking for--we did get a Field and Stream store close to me and I am fairly impressed with their selection and prices so far--time will tell if it lasts--I did not go to the Grand opening of the Cabela's store you are talking about--kind of figured between the crowd and prices I did not miss much

fishing user avatarMIbassyaker reply :

We have a bunch of chain sporting goods stores in my area with "adequate", but not extraordinary fishing selections -- a smaller-sized cabelas, a gander, a couple of DSG, MC Sports, Dunham's; the Gander is probably has the most stuff of all of those, cabela's is decent for some things....however, they still can't beat the local independent tackle store that's been here since the 50's for most of what I'm looking for. I always try to check those guys first, and then if they don't have what I need, I'll stop at one of the chains provided it's on the way to something. I rarely find that the chains have it while the indie store doesn't. Otherwise, I'll do a TW order, or order direct from a company.

The two closest BPS to me are both 2 hours away. They are magnificent, but four hours of my life round-trip travel time plus gas is not worth it.

I'm with you on "Field and Stream". I have one 10 minutes from my house. It's now my go to store. Good prices, and really decent fishing dept

Hootie.

fishing user avatarbrown12687 reply :

For fishing, bass pro hands down.  For hunting, Cabelas.

fishing user avatarBass newb reply :

Hold up on the field and stream....awesome store but the prices are sky high on a good bit of stuff. $15 for same thing Dicks had for $12, and Walmart had for $7.

fishing user avatarJeff H reply :

I'm so glad to have a Cabela's close by!  Love the place!  I use the "ship to store" option when internet shopping to save a few bucks.

No BPS in my area and Gander is more expensive.  New Dick's nearby but it's worthless. I don't do Walmart.

Have a couple really good independents (Capra's and Thorne Bros.) close by that actually get most of my business.

fishing user avatarpapajoe222 reply :

I have both within easy driving distance and BPS is the better of the two for fishing gear. For an all around sporting goods store, Cabela's gets the nod from me. Gander Mtn. is the closest to me, but unless I go in for one of their sales, I don't visit it.

fishing user avatarjbmaine reply :

We have a Cabelas about an hour from us, in Scarborough ME. The way they have the fishing dept. is terrible. All the tackle seems to be by brand rather than type. One isle will have owner hooks, three isles over will be Gammy hooks. the same with worms, etc. If I want to compare creature baits, I don't want to walk thru multiple isles to do so. To me, it isn't worth the trip. I'll just order on line.

fishing user avatarbassr95 reply :

I pretty much only buy from TW. I love browsing their site, reading reviews, and taking however long I want to make a purchase. Selection is a huge plus as well

fishing user avatarBankbeater reply :

I have a BPS maybe 10 min away from my house. Cabelas and Dick's are both about 15 min away by the highway. Gander Mountain is about 45 min away. I prefer BPS for fishing supplies.

fishing user avatarTHE_Vue's reply :

Fleet Farm FTW where Im from

fishing user avatarJames Pondscum reply :

The  Cabelas Ohio stores are 80,000 sq feet my local Mi store is about 225;000 sq feet.  Almost three times the size.  Their is a difference.

fishing user avatarRob96 reply :

I like the store in Hamburg, PA. It's 250,000 square feet. Yes they could change the organization of the fishing department, but it is good. Been to the BPS in Harrisburg and wasn't impressed. It was more expensive than Cabela's and didn't have the selection either.

fishing user avatargarvin reply :

Went to the Cabela's in Buda, TX. It's huge. I dubbed it "Husband Day Care." Lots of things to keep the outdoor-minded occupied for a long time. Lots of pizzazz and eye-candy, but there is one flaw...

The prices are too high.

If I want a good deal, I go to Academy or I order from Tackle Warehouse.

I do have to give props to Cabela's Tournament ZX series rods, though. They're a great value when they're on sale for $69, and they're my favorite rods. I have three of them.

fishing user avatarpoisonokie reply :

There are at least 5 academy's, 4 dick's, and a bps in my town. Getting a cabela's on the 17th. I'm glad because they carry different tackle. I'm also a TW guy who doesn't mind a trip to BPS, but that parking lot is almost always full because it's one of the few free places to park in Bricktown and all the cheapskates fill it up without even setting foot in the store. Cabela's will be a smidge closer to me and won't have that problem.

fishing user avatarbuzzed bait reply :

i was really disappointed with the Cabela's that opened up near my house on the first couple/few trips i made there.  BUT i think they must have listened or got a little wiser because they seem to have expanded the bass section and limited the saltwater section which makes sense for this region.  i've since been back and scored some great deals on sales and clearanced lures/tackle.

fishing user avatarkcdinkerz reply :

Yeah it's handy to have a cabelas near by but for the prices I'd rather shop at tackle warehouse

Yep, those locals are excellent. I shop there or go online to TW.

Seems like I'll bypass that one, who am I kidding I'll still stop in :D

fishing user avatarSam reply :

We are getting a "Cabela's Light" in Richmond, Virginia in the near future.

It will not be a large Cabela's store but a scaled down version.

We have Bass Pro Shops, Green Top and Dick's and now Cabela's enters the Richmond market.

Throw in the other local tackle shops and you can find just about any "standard and high turnover" baits you want.

There are so many things the box stores cannot offer due to space limitations so we still have to look at Senko Lover's Tackle Warehouse and other on-line outlets.

It's worth a look. I still found plenty to spend my $$$ on.

fishing user avatarArobb2012 reply :

I haven't been to the Cincinnati cabela's yet but have heard from multiple people that it is disappointing. They are putting a store in Centerville, I hope it is decent since dsg I go to is a let down when looking for a specific lure or color.

fishing user avatarJoe. reply :

Always enjoy going to Cabela's, but I never, ever leave with anything. Prices are astronomical, you can save at least 10 bucks even on small stuff buy just going through Amazon, but you cannot beat going to a store and actually being able to see the products.

Field and Stream is nice but not quite worth the drive (at least, not regularly) because my local store was essentially just Dicks with a few more camo jackets, and it was very similar to Cabelas in that the clothing was all very high priced ($250 for a coat)

The BPS near me was underwhelming. Gander Mountains is nothing special, but it is nice to have all these options in case you're searching for something specific.
