Hey guys, I was thinking about this earlier today and figured I'd ask.
1) What do you drive?
2) What fishing gear do you always have in your car?
3) How do you organize/store it?
4) What else do you keep? Clothes, coolers, waders, etc.
Dare I say it, I feel like I've reached a point where I want to keep too much gear in my car on a day to day basis. So I'm just curious what I'm up against, haha.
‘05 Crew Cab Colorado with a topper
I keep one two-piece spinning reel under the backseat and a small Academy bag that holds 4 3600 boxes in the bed.
1. 2019 Ford F-150, 6’8” bed with a cap.
2. No fishing gear stays in the truck year round
3. I have a 4 rod rack that hangs from the ceiling of the cap. But there are only rods in it during fishing season.
I might, leave a single tackle box in the bed. I have a bed rug so the box doesn’t slide around.
4. A couple of spare hats and a rain jacket will stay on the back seat.
Leaving stuff in the truck is just asking for someone to break in and steal stuff. The rod rack isn’t visible from outside the truck.
2018 F-150
No gear ever is kept in it
I keep a back pack with everything I need and rod with a t-rig setup ready to go in the garage
Basic safety stuff - flashlight, jacket, first aid kit, and a couple of need to have tools
I drive a Dodge truck with a cap. I have a drawer system in the bed. My son and I each keep one rod and one 3600 box with basic lures and terminal tackle in one of the drawers.
1) Dodge Ram short bed no camper shell
2) no fishing gear stays in truck (someone will take it)
3) n/a
4) pipe wrench, hammer, hydraulic jack, jumper cables. Thieves never take stuff they might have to do work with
1. 2015 GMC crew cab with Retrax retractable/ lockable cover
2. (2) 3 piece travel rods in tubes (One spin, one baitcast) under back seat storage. Small box with basic lure selection.
3. Under seat storage unit inside truck, plastic tub in truck bed
4. In bed tub, floor jack, jumper cables, hand saw, machete. Rope
Under seat, first aid kit, gloves, ratchet straps, tow strap, tool bag, extra set clothes, pair boots/socks, orange vest, tire inflator
2014 GMC Crew Cab with a tonneau cover.
I can then load the following into the bed of the truck as I need it (I rarely keep it in the truck when I don't need it in fear someone may steal it):
-Flambeau Bazooka rod tube that can easily fit a dozen rods
-Two pistol cases that may have up to 10 casting reels and 5 spinning reels at any time.
-Bass mafia tackle bag (that thing is massive!)
-Portable Cabela's grill
-Bag of grilling stuff (tools, seasonings, trash bags, paper plates, plastic forks etc.)
-Up to three different coolers, one for day use and one to take drinks with me to a fishing sport and one for camping
-A box with various camping gear, inc. a portable burner and iron skillet that I can use instead of the grill sometimes
I started keeping flashlights and extra batteries in the glove box -- caught night fishing too many times without a flashlight.
I usually keep a raincoat under the backseat and depending on the time of the year, extra socks and shoes or sandals.
1. C5 Corvette
2. I found a bubblegum Stick-O in the hatch a couple weeks ago, so I guess I kept that in the car for a while.
3. All I keep in the car is some jumper cables and a tire pressure gauge.
Pickup truck. All I carry are coffee stains and dog drool. There's also an old tube TV in the bad I keep meaning to recycle. At this point, it's just weight for winter traction.
I have a 2016 Chevy 1500 club cab.
1. Plastic box with jack and lug nut wrench for my boat, wheel chucks, boat light adapter, and hitch slide with ball.
2. I have another small plastic box that has cleaner and wax to clean my boat when I get off of the water.
WHEN I FISH A TOIURNAMENT I TAKE:
1. When I fish a tournament I early or late in the season I put a duffle bag with heavy cloths and gloves, etc. I also put in a pair of chest waders, because you never know what the lake level may be like, or if the ramp has a courtesy dock. I’ve had to use them a few times to launch or load my boat.
2. I also have put together a box with bags of bait and bait colors I typically don’t use. I’ve gone to this box several times after pre-fishing with success.
3. I also take a box with extra fishing line and spooler
17' Outback.
I keep an insane about of stuff in my car, to the point where it's more or less a two-seater. I have a big old Cabala's tackle back in the back with some assorted TT in the small pocket and the main pocket full of 4-8 plano 3600 boxes at any given time. Next to it is a open top trunk organizer with all my first-aid/comfort items, a bunch of towels in various states of filth, a few assorted buffs/hats, also assorted filth, my raincoats, a pair of spare tennis shoes, and my water shoes. In between these two things I keep my rods, one folded beach towel under them and one on top. Then, I keep one of the rear seats folded down. On top of it is a thick entrance mat I keep wet/muddy/sandy shoes/clothing on for the drive home. In the rear seat footwells I keep a duffel bag with my waders/boots and on the other side a small cooler. In the summer the cooler is full of water bottles and in the winter it's water and a insulated vest and a softshell jacket. The non-folded rear seat is left empty to hold groceries/my work bag(s). Oh, I also have some basic tools, a machete, jumpers, and an old e-tool in the sparewheel well.
I have it all very organized but it is a constant struggle. My work schedule is very erratic as is my sleep schedule so I like to be able to roll out of bed and hit the road without having to think about packing.
18 Dodge Durango
I’m fortunate enough to have this as my unmarked unit for work. I’m also fortunate enough to have a whole lot of storage space in it. I’ve got a Zebco Dock demon with me at all times conveniently placed next to the rifle rack built into the rear of the car. There’s been times when I’ve gotten home late from a tournament and left 4-5 rods and reels in my car and just gone to work the next day without removing them. Where the 3rd row seats are supposed to be I’ve got 2 large storage compartments one of which contains a tackle bag with some terminal tackle and some of my favorite plastics. On days when we get to leave early, or even on days when I’ve had to actually work, I was able to grab a rod and reel and “pretend” to fish a pond or whatnot. All the while gathering valuable info that we’d be unable to get otherwise.
2020 Silverado LTZ
Scale, spare needle nose pliers, and a change of clothes in case I take a unplanned swim.
2003 Chevy Duramax Xtra cab 8' bed..I keep jumper cable, a tow strap, vice grips, and No fishing gear. Oh, I keep my golf clubs in there too..
When I do go fishing, I toss however many combos I want to take, and my back pack with all my lures, ect.
02 Yukon XL, only moves when I go fishing and it stays fully loaded down with gear so it's ready to go when I am.
1. 2020 Gladiator
2. St. Croix ML/XF Spinning Shimano
3. Kept in backpack
4. Basic winter gear & misc fishing gear
5. K.I.S.S.
2017 Camry which is my daily driver. I keep a spare tire, jumper cables, tools for changing the tire, rubber boots, telescopic lure retriever, and a rain suit in the trunk.
For fishing trips the tackle bag goes in the back seat, battery and trolling motor goes in the trunk, and rods lay across the front seat into the back.
2010 silverado xtra cab. In season I've got everything except my trolling motor battery in there; rods, reels, boxes/bags, lifevest, rainsuit, motor. Once I'm done I all comes out.
I have a dedicated fishing truck (98 Ford Explorer) and so I keep most of my fishing gear in the truck most of the time. The truck only comes out of the fishing shed when I go fishing. Number of years ago I got a BUNCH of stuff stolen out of my boat, which doesn't have lockable storage. My insurance agent told me that it all would have been covered had it been stolen out of my truck ( which is lockable )
When I go fishing, it takes 20 minutes or so to transfer gear from the truck to the boat, same for taking out and getting ready to leave. It is a compromise I'm willing to make.
Fishing wise I tend to keep my ML spinning rod, small tackle bag, and neoprene waders. On top of that I'll keep some old cold gear and assorted cold weather items.
'94 Ford Ranger. Telescopic rod and inexpensive reel, hooks, sinkers and a bag of worms.
2001 Silverado Extended Cab. I've removed the rear seat to give myself more interior cargo room. My old Avocet ML rig has a 2-piece rod. So I'm gonna store that in the back of the cab with my 'panfish' box - a 3600 with hooks, split-shots, bobbers and Mepps spinners. Short shoreline trips for sunnies or crappies will now be a snap.
2007 Dodge Durango. I primarily fish from kayak, don't have a garage, so I pretty much stay ready to go within minutes. My wife also fishes from kayak and her stuff is mostly in there year round, also. I sometimes rent jon boats and have a trolling motor and two batteries in there from around Easter to Thanksgiving, not to mention a portable fishfinder, anchor, boat seat and boat cushions. I don't leave my outboard in there year round, just load it and gas can when I'm going to rent on a lake that allows gas motors
Year round:
- One or two kayaks on top nearly year round.
- 12-17 rods suspended on vehicle rod straps
- 2 crates, yak seat, cart.....
- Duffel bag with 10 3600 boxes
- 2 paddles, 2 pfds, two fishfinders, numerous bags of plastics.....
- 2 pairs of water shoes, 2 pairs of muck boots
I needed to use the Durango for a trip over Christmas. Emptied and cleaned it or the first time in many, many years....found a Bluetooth earpiece that I lost over four years ago...lol

Hello my over-loaded vehicle brother.
My friends make fun of how much stuff I keep jammed in my car, until they need to borrow something that is.
F150 and I don't keep anything in it for fishing other than light weight rain gear (could be fro any situation though), extra packages of my plastics (mostly to give away though) and bolt cutters (mini and medium just in case).
